What a fun place as long as you don't mind waiting in line. We got lucky on a Wed night after an early dinner at Pacifica, we stopped by and there was no line. The service here is excellent. They give you a sample of all the flavors and it was so fun to try everything. I opted for a large cup, half pistachio and half white chocolate swirl. It was a bit sweeter than I expected but it was excellent still.
An's holds the title of the top gelato spot in America for a reason! This location specifically in Del Mar is a hat themed shop with a lot of random and quirky hat decor. Wifey and I finally got to try the new sorbet flavors they have: the Ngob (Mango) and the McAllen (Strawberry Grapefruit). I really enjoyed both of these flavors and they were so refreshing for the summer!
Finally went to one of An's Hatmakers locations in SD! I heard and read about them and they are such a hype and it's hard for me to check them out since I don't live locally. We were in the area and walked down to An's after a late lunch/early dinner. The staff were super friendly and each of them repeat the same lengthy descriptive menu of the day for everyone with genuine enthusiasm. Kudos for all of them! I forgot what I got now since it was at least a month ago that we went there but I just know we were so satisfied! My suggestion is to go with the staff's suggestion! lol
Well shoooot I might like Gelato now. Definitely the best Gelato I've had. The line wasnt too crazy when we got there (get ~45min before sunset then walk to the park cause after its looooong) and one scooper was moving it along fast while still doing the tour which was appreciated. Downside is the Gelato places around me aren't this good so still deferring to ice cream. Shout out to the random person on the bus that randomly found us approachable to start talking about all his fav food places and recommended this place (along with some others that held up). Ill call him the 101 foodie. Also they dont make hats from what I saw but they do have ones you can try on while in line once inside.
This place is super super cute and is by the same people as An's Dry Cleaning and An's Electronics! I absolutely love that they have their flavor tour which is where they give you a sample of every flavor they have. They also have very unique flavors and change it up every few weeks. My favorite flavor they had was when they had their Matcha collab with Paru Tea, and I believe they still bring the matcha flavor back sometimes! They definitely get really busy on the weekends (1-2 hour wait) so I recommend going on a weekday where I only had to wait 10 minutes! The pricing is a little pricy, but not too bad, especially for the quality and service they provide! I also definitely recommend going to their other stores too as they are all different themes. Free 1 hour parking garage!
Spent an amazing weekend in Del Mar. The scenery, the people, the seafood made for a true getaway. After dinner we naturally started to think about something sweet to cap off the night. Found An's nearby, but when we walked over there was a line down the street, so we decided to come back the next day. We came back the next day after lunch and there was nobody in line! The setup here is different than other ice cream / gelato shops. Here they have a limited selection of flavors that they change every few weeks, and it's customary for them to give you a taste and explanation of each one before ordering, similar to a wine tasting. After the tasting they ask you to choose 2 flavors. I don't remember the flavor names, but they're named after iconic hats. I had a flavor that had mango and passion fruit mixed with a flavor that tasted straight out of a See's candy box. Wife had a super dark chocolate with matcha. All I can say are the boldness of flavors they achieve here can only be done thru using the highest of quality ingredients. Truly remarkable their flavors. They are extremely indulgent without being too rich, hard to explain but each bite was so addictive. We can't wait to return to Del Mar and bring the whole family (and dogs) next time, and An's will be a must visit on that trip. True 5 star, must try spot. (Sorry about the messy half eaten pics...)
Cute themed ice cream place! Unique flavors and high quality ice cream. Line was long but to be expected! They give lots of samples and are super friendly :)
One of my favorite Gelato shops in SD! Although it's a sister location to An's Dry Cleaning, the line is a lot shorter, especially if you go right when it opens. I love how the staff does flavor tours, where you get to sample and hear about each flavor before you order. I got a large double scoop of the leather (chocolate chip cookie) and visor (pistachio) and loved how nutty visor was. I would recommend pairing nutty visor with cypress if you're interested in a dark dubai chocolate note. This shop is close to the beach, but there is a paid garage attached to the plaza. If you are willing to walk, there is street parking in the vicinity.
The lore of these An's gelato spots is so cool - love that they really pay homage to the previous business and that it's embedded in the store name, decor, and flavor names. Their gelato is truly the best I've had in my life - dare I say, I enjoyed this more than the gelato I had in Italy. The ceremonial strawberry matcha flavor was DIVINE if you're a matcha lover. Such strong pure matcha flavor, just the right amount of sweetness and creaminess. The strawberry jam is homemade. The strawberry sorbet was strawberry galore - 6 lbs strawberries per batch. I love that they let every customer do the flavour tour. It does crank up the line times but it's worth it. Also, it's only a long line if you catch them at a busy time like weekends or after work. This place was so good we came back 3 times on our 1 week trip here. Not to mention, the staff is SO nice!
My co-residents and I knew that we had to stop by one of An's ice cream shops before leaving SD and I am so glad we did because this was the best gelato I've ever had. The experience was overall just so fun too because we were literally able to sample every flavor before ordering and they were all so good that it was hard to decide. The workers were so sweet and chatty and overall just added to the positive experience! There's a few tables inside and I absolutely LOVED their decorations!! There were so many hats all around and it was such a cute concept. For the gelato, I decided to get a small with the flavors Leather and Cypress. The Leather was a brown butter flavor with chocolate chips and I was so impressed. It was soo rich and so addicting that I bought a pint of it to bring home, even though I lived a 2 hour drive away. The Cypress was a super rich chocolate flavor which I also loved! The slight bitterness was a great contrast to the sweetness of the Leather. I was so addicted and would definitely recommend this place!
Love this place. Always a great experience. The teenagers working there are always so well mannered and do a great job with their tour sample. I got the power supply (coffee, dulce leche, cinnamon) and leather ( brown butter chocolate chip cookies). Small size is more than enough ice cream for me. So delicious!
What to say about this place that hasn't already been said... the ice cream is so amazing and the joy of trying all the flavors is always so fun. This place is always worth coming back because they have so many flavors and all of them have their own unique texture and profile. They make ice cream an art here. The parking situation isn't so good but the structure it's located in offers free parking for up to an hour. Pro tip to skip the line get a pint and enjoy it down by the water or up the stairs to the left of the storefront for an ocean view!!!!!
We really enjoyed our visit to An's Hatmakers while we were in the area. First off, we went on a weekday so there weren't any lines. The staff who took us on our "flavor tour" was very energetic, friendly, and knowledgeable of the menu. We ended up selecting their Mixmaster (vanilla, cinnamon, salted butter) and Leather (brown butter, cookies) flavors. We love a good sweet/salty moment so these flavors were right up our alley. We found parking in the paid garage behind the shop, and we'd definitely return for some tasty gelato!
Ambiance - cute decor of hats but it's an ice cream shop with hat names. They change the menu periodically. Service - fast and friendly Food - got the pumpkin cheese..so good with chunks of pumpkin seeds and not too sweet. It's all gluten free and they give a big quantity read more

Came here on a Friday evening and it was busy!! Absolutely loved the theming inside the store- so many hats and fun antique hat store vibes. I forget the actual names of the flavors I got (all hat themed too, so cute), but one flavor had brown butter and chocolate chip cookie bits and the other was their rendition of tiramisu. I enjoyed the tiramisu flavor more, the brown butter ice cream was so buttery that it left a slightly unpleasant oily residue in my mouth. But the gelato was really good and creamy, not too sweet at all! Staff were super friendly, and props to them because they handle a busy line for hours and provide samples with so much patience! LOL Parking was super easy, there's a lot right under the building where An's is located, and it was free for the first 90 minutes or something! Would love to come back and try the other flavors... read more

Summary: great flavors, free parking, fast and professional service! We came here because we live closer to here than AN's Dry Cleaning in North Park. Parking was easy, as there was an underground lot in the same block. First hour is free. We took the flavor tour to try all the flavors before deciding on coppola, bandana, and top hat. Cotton doodle was also really good. Service was extremely fast but we never felt rushed. Gelato was extra creamy. Flavors were unique and balanced. Servings were generous. My favorite of the day was bandana for its butter crumbles. Limited seating inside and outside, but why not take your ice cream for a stroll along the nice beach-town area? read more

Siu - thank you so much
Love they do not have the same flavors everyday. Here is what to expect. You get to sample all the flavors before buying (pro tip, check the freezer if they don't have your flavor on the line). After sampling you pick your flavor and size. If you want an extra treat grab one of their amazing baked goods as well. This location is in the middle of two famous restaurants so enjoy a great dinner, amazing sunset and end the night with the best ice cream money can buy! read more

Thank you so much, Brad. We really appreciate it
We went with a group of 7 people. We got a bunch of different flavors but I was interested in the Matcha Pistachio combo aka Sashiko. I was so excited but there were too many salted nuts in the ice cream (not really gelato consistency), no taste of matcha and it was way too salty. My 8 yr old foodie rated it a 1.5. Maybe the other flavors were better. Avoid the matcha pistachio combo. My older kid said his Velour (salted caramel) was good. His cousin also had high regards for the milk tea honey toast flavor. At least the shop is cute and I appreciate the staff asking if anyone had allergies before giving out samples. read more

In one word- awesome! The line was out the door but it moved fairly swiftly and inside this is a super cute, unique place! Cute little booths, hats and sewing machines mark the theme. But then we got to the service and gelato- omg! Sondra thank you! She was friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and offered us each of the flavors with a little info about what makes it special- made our decision easy (but also hard because everything is so good)! Collectively three of us tried the leather, clay and pistachio flavors. Leather was the family favorite but I have to say their pistachio is the best I've ever had including in several places in Italy! This place is now on my list for my birthday treat in a few months. read more

Awesome is what we are striving for. Thanks for coming in Supriya!
It was my first time there and they offer a tour of their flavors where you get to try every flavor. I thought that was a really nice offering as most places only let you try two flavors. They do switch up their flavors every month. I thought the gelato was good but not necessarily the best I have ever had but definitely a solid choice in San Diego They have several tables both inside and outside to eat read more

Hands down best gelato I've ever had - when I asked if I could sample flavors, they told me they could walk me through the entire menu and allow our group to sample every flavor, despite us sampling every flavor the line moved quickly - the gelato was sooo good - the pistachio flavor was incredibly nutty with chunks of pistachio; the clay ice cream had chunks of brownie notes that were so good!!! Stumbled into the cutest ice cream shop while I was in the area. The staff was so sweet and gave us a "tour" of all the different flavors they had to offer. The experience was so novel and all their flavors were all SO delicious it was so hard to choose! We enjoyed the strawhat (mango and passionfruit), argyle (their take on a neopolitan), hemp (ferrero roche-like chocolate hazlenut praline), and leather (brown butter with chocolate chip cookies). There is both lot and street parking. Would highly recommend this spot for a yummy sweet treat and the perfect beach view! read more

Service was very friendly and helpful. I tried each flavor before deciding on visor (pistachio) and leather ( brown butter with chocolate chip cookies) in a waffle cone. Make sure to get a waffle cone. It was fresh and sweet but not overly so and crunchy but not brittle. It was perfect. The shop was nice and bright and clean. read more

Loving leather right now, too! Thanks for the review, Courtney.
We popped in an hour before closing and the line is always out the door until closing - definitely understood why after we tried their ice cream. We had leather (butter and chocolate chip cookies), clay (Nutella and brownie), strawberry sorbet, and pistachio. All flavors were intricate and delicious! They do have the option of a gluten free cone. There are 2 tables inside and some outside seatings as well. Makes sense that they're rated #1 in the US, will definitely come back when in the area. read more

There's a slight smoke to the smell of ice cream that hits your face when you enter this establishment. I've had plenty of ice creams and gelatos, but this place definitely tops what that list is. You can't help but notice the boldness in the flavors and may even consider a flavor you think you didn't like. Truly quality in every bite. If you don't like lines, mobile order your pints. But if you want the full experience, wait in line and go on the flavor tour. read more

I went here with friends after they won the vote and I got visor and leather. They still offer the flavor tour and the person helping us explained each flavor to us. The line was really long so we were sited about 30 min but otherwise our experience was great. I do wish they had their cypress flavor in rotation which has always been my favorite but maybe next time. read more

It's such a nice hole in a wall. The ice cream is amazing. I haven't been to all I've cream places in USA so I won't know if it indeed the best ice cream. Had the roasted pistachio. Very nice flavor balance. Good ratio if ice cream to pistachio. It's really gogo didn't have time to take photos before I swallowed that whole thing down lol. Pecan tart is amazing. It's shortbread based with some salted caramel pecan topping oh la la! read more

Very cute little ice cream store in Del Mar! Not a lot of seating available inside, but there were a few places to sit and stand outside. It's also located very close to the beach so you could always take your ice cream to the beach and eat it while taking in the views! There wasn't a huge variety of flavors, but the ones we did try were very delicious. I assume they switch the flavors out seasonally and I liked how there were both fruity sorbet and more decadent ice cream options so I didn't mind the smaller selection at all!! We ordered: Straw Hat- mango and passion fruit sorbet flavor Tweed- tres leches The straw hat ice cream was a nice, refreshing, tropical sorbet, perfect for the hot day while the tres leches was creamy and smooth without being overwhelmingly sweet! I especially enjoyed the little cake pieces in the ice cream. Although it was pretty busy, we were able to get our ice cream quickly, without feeling like we were being rushed. It is a little expensive, with a small being $6.25 and large being $7.25 (as of August 2024) but it is Del Mar so I get it. I wanna visit again to try some of the other flavors! read more

Food: 5/5 Service and Setting: 5/5 Value: 3/5 An's Hatmakers is located on the street level of the Del Mar Plaza. Loving their sister location, An's Dry Cleaning, I came here for a similar experience and easier parking. Parking looks deceptively difficult, but there is a dedicated parking lot for the plaza. Going inside, the interior is homey and full of rich warm woody tones. Retro yet modern without being nauseatingly Pinterest-inspired, the shop was aesthetic and comfy. The person helping us was very nice and allowed us to try all of the flavors of gelato before we made our selection. Service, vibes, and food were all immaculate. Fascinator: 5/5 An all strawberry sorbet, the Fascinator was rich and velvety without any dairy. Each bite felt like you were eating the sweetest and freshest strawberry with a slight tart note in the back as you would expect with fresh fruit. A little bit too sweet for my taste, it is great to pair with a more subdued flavor. Deeply decadent while being refreshing. Sashiko: 5/5 Named after a Japanese stitching technique, Sashiko marries green tea and pistachio to create another delicious combination. Again, dairy free, Sashiko is a very smart combination. The pistachios cover the bitter grassy notes that green tea tends to have while amplifying the smoother and roasted flavors that pair well in gelato form. The pistachios also give the gelato a slightly grainy texture, sort of like almond flour in macarons but I enjoyed the textural contrast. Not at all icy and not too sweet at all. Surprisingly sophisticated while being easy to enjoy, Sashiko is a banger. read more

What a cute place. Everything from interior decor to service to sweet treat was spectacular. Carissa took us through each flavor with samples, explaining what went into all of them. Here were a couple favorites: Mint-lime sorbet - not on the menu, but we still got to try it. Not too sweet. Very pleasant and refreshing taste. I could tell they actually used the herb in this, and it was one of my favorite flavors for sure. Clay - nutella/brownie is what the menu said. Not overwhelmingly sweet with cacao bits folded into it. I think this would go well with their strawberry sorbet! Fluff - honey/blueberry jam flavor. Fruit part didn't taste artificial, which is why I ended up liking An's so much. This flavor is slightly sweeter than the others, but I assume it's because it has honey. Really nice gelato. Some seating both inside and out. Great place for a date or treat after stroll by the beach. Good location too, as it's surrounded by shopping and restaurants. What a beautiful experience! Will be back. read more
