What a fun place as long as you don't mind waiting in line. We got lucky on a Wed night after an early dinner at Pacifica, we stopped by and there was no line. The service here is excellent. They give you a sample of all the flavors and it was so fun to try everything. I opted for a large cup, half pistachio and half white chocolate swirl. It was a bit sweeter than I expected but it was excellent still.
An's holds the title of the top gelato spot in America for a reason! This location specifically in Del Mar is a hat themed shop with a lot of random and quirky hat decor. Wifey and I finally got to try the new sorbet flavors they have: the Ngob (Mango) and the McAllen (Strawberry Grapefruit). I really enjoyed both of these flavors and they were so refreshing for the summer!
Finally went to one of An's Hatmakers locations in SD! I heard and read about them and they are such a hype and it's hard for me to check them out since I don't live locally. We were in the area and walked down to An's after a late lunch/early dinner. The staff were super friendly and each of them repeat the same lengthy descriptive menu of the day for everyone with genuine enthusiasm. Kudos for all of them! I forgot what I got now since it was at least a month ago that we went there but I just know we were so satisfied! My suggestion is to go with the staff's suggestion! lol
Well shoooot I might like Gelato now. Definitely the best Gelato I've had. The line wasnt too crazy when we got there (get ~45min before sunset then walk to the park cause after its looooong) and one scooper was moving it along fast while still doing the tour which was appreciated. Downside is the Gelato places around me aren't this good so still deferring to ice cream. Shout out to the random person on the bus that randomly found us approachable to start talking about all his fav food places and recommended this place (along with some others that held up). Ill call him the 101 foodie. Also they dont make hats from what I saw but they do have ones you can try on while in line once inside.
This place is super super cute and is by the same people as An's Dry Cleaning and An's Electronics! I absolutely love that they have their flavor tour which is where they give you a sample of every flavor they have. They also have very unique flavors and change it up every few weeks. My favorite flavor they had was when they had their Matcha collab with Paru Tea, and I believe they still bring the matcha flavor back sometimes! They definitely get really busy on the weekends (1-2 hour wait) so I recommend going on a weekday where I only had to wait 10 minutes! The pricing is a little pricy, but not too bad, especially for the quality and service they provide! I also definitely recommend going to their other stores too as they are all different themes. Free 1 hour parking garage!
Spent an amazing weekend in Del Mar. The scenery, the people, the seafood made for a true getaway. After dinner we naturally started to think about something sweet to cap off the night. Found An's nearby, but when we walked over there was a line down the street, so we decided to come back the next day. We came back the next day after lunch and there was nobody in line! The setup here is different than other ice cream / gelato shops. Here they have a limited selection of flavors that they change every few weeks, and it's customary for them to give you a taste and explanation of each one before ordering, similar to a wine tasting. After the tasting they ask you to choose 2 flavors. I don't remember the flavor names, but they're named after iconic hats. I had a flavor that had mango and passion fruit mixed with a flavor that tasted straight out of a See's candy box. Wife had a super dark chocolate with matcha. All I can say are the boldness of flavors they achieve here can only be done thru using the highest of quality ingredients. Truly remarkable their flavors. They are extremely indulgent without being too rich, hard to explain but each bite was so addictive. We can't wait to return to Del Mar and bring the whole family (and dogs) next time, and An's will be a must visit on that trip. True 5 star, must try spot. (Sorry about the messy half eaten pics...)

One of my favorite Gelato shops in SD! Although it's a sister location to An's Dry Cleaning, the line is a lot shorter, especially if you go right when it opens. I love how the staff does flavor tours, where you get to sample and hear about each flavor before you order. I got a large double scoop of the leather (chocolate chip cookie) and visor (pistachio) and loved how nutty visor was. I would recommend pairing nutty visor with cypress if you're interested in a dark dubai chocolate note. This shop is close to the beach, but there is a paid garage attached to the plaza. If you are willing to walk, there is street parking in the vicinity.
The lore of these An's gelato spots is so cool - love that they really pay homage to the previous business and that it's embedded in the store name, decor, and flavor names. Their gelato is truly the best I've had in my life - dare I say, I enjoyed this more than the gelato I had in Italy. The ceremonial strawberry matcha flavor was DIVINE if you're a matcha lover. Such strong pure matcha flavor, just the right amount of sweetness and creaminess. The strawberry jam is homemade. The strawberry sorbet was strawberry galore - 6 lbs strawberries per batch. I love that they let every customer do the flavour tour. It does crank up the line times but it's worth it. Also, it's only a long line if you catch them at a busy time like weekends or after work. This place was so good we came back 3 times on our 1 week trip here. Not to mention, the staff is SO nice!
My co-residents and I knew that we had to stop by one of An's ice cream shops before leaving SD and I am so glad we did because this was the best gelato I've ever had. The experience was overall just so fun too because we were literally able to sample every flavor before ordering and they were all so good that it was hard to decide. The workers were so sweet and chatty and overall just added to the positive experience! There's a few tables inside and I absolutely LOVED their decorations!! There were so many hats all around and it was such a cute concept. For the gelato, I decided to get a small with the flavors Leather and Cypress. The Leather was a brown butter flavor with chocolate chips and I was so impressed. It was soo rich and so addicting that I bought a pint of it to bring home, even though I lived a 2 hour drive away. The Cypress was a super rich chocolate flavor which I also loved! The slight bitterness was a great contrast to the sweetness of the Leather. I was so addicted and would definitely recommend this place!
Love this place. Always a great experience. The teenagers working there are always so well mannered and do a great job with their tour sample. I got the power supply (coffee, dulce leche, cinnamon) and leather ( brown butter chocolate chip cookies). Small size is more than enough ice cream for me. So delicious!
What to say about this place that hasn't already been said... the ice cream is so amazing and the joy of trying all the flavors is always so fun. This place is always worth coming back because they have so many flavors and all of them have their own unique texture and profile. They make ice cream an art here. The parking situation isn't so good but the structure it's located in offers free parking for up to an hour. Pro tip to skip the line get a pint and enjoy it down by the water or up the stairs to the left of the storefront for an ocean view!!!!!
We really enjoyed our visit to An's Hatmakers while we were in the area. First off, we went on a weekday so there weren't any lines. The staff who took us on our "flavor tour" was very energetic, friendly, and knowledgeable of the menu. We ended up selecting their Mixmaster (vanilla, cinnamon, salted butter) and Leather (brown butter, cookies) flavors. We love a good sweet/salty moment so these flavors were right up our alley. We found parking in the paid garage behind the shop, and we'd definitely return for some tasty gelato!
An iconic San Diego gelato shop that was ranked #2 best in America, and it definitely lives up to its name. To start, parking was super convenient in the parking structure, with the first 60 minutes being free. When we first entered the shop, there was quaint antique-like decor to fit the hat theme, and both indoor and outdoor seating. The girl helping us was friendly and super thorough, letting us do a taste test of all the flavors before making a decision. All the flavors were delicious, but we settled on a small palate cleanser (lime and yes, this is an unofficial flavor haha) + straw hat (mango & passion fruit), and a small leather (brown butter & chocolate chip cookie) + visor (roasted pistachio). Overall, fantastic service and delicious gelato! I do have to note that a small cup is quite tiny and $6.25+tax, but nonetheless, worth the price for the experience. I haven't been to the original An's Dry Cleaning, but this location seems to have a better parking situation and probably offers the same quality. An's is one of the best ice cream shops that I have eva been to. It was knock yo hats off(lolz) good. We cam here on a Sunday afternoon and it was bustling. Parking was not fun to find at all but the parking garage has a one hour free limit . Inside the store it was quite hot which was not expected for an ice cream shop. It was really clean and well decorated and there was a lot of hat-themed decor. The service was great and I really enjoyed the concept of the flavor tour, where they let you try each of the different flavors. It does not make it awkward to ask to try any of the flavors. Overall, I would recommend greatly that you go and try this ice-cream store. Unbeknownst to me at the time of eating, it was ranked number 1 ice cream shop in the United States read more

SUPER CUTE SHOP, the interior is super cute and themed around a hatmaker shop. The flavors are changed based on seasons, weeks, and even holidays, and there's even flavors named based on different types of hats! The flavors are all super rich and amazing every time. read more

if i could give this place 10 stars, i would. every time i make a trip down to sd, i always get an's hatmakers. they let you taste every single flavor, even if you are with a party of 5. they'll take the time to do it. my favorite is the palette cleanser with the mint and lime flavor!!! i love how diverse they are with their flavors and how authentic it tastes. they have cute decor like the iconic mirror. it's right next to del mar beach so you can grab your gelato and eat it by the beach read more

Been to Del Mar a couple of times and never dropped by until yesterday. We waited in line for maybe 30 minutes and when we got to the front, we did the flavor tour. They give you the opp to try all prior to deciding. But, if you want to buy to go, you can just go inside and get a pint from the fridge. Anyways, it was sooo good! We got the party hat with pistachio and the cotton. Can't believe we've been missing out. Highly rec if you're in town - nice treat to get if you're headed for the sunset! read more

An's offers inventive, rotating flavors of gelato, and their Hatmakers location is conveniently located in the Del Mar Plaza. I love that this location also maintains a theme (similar to their OG North Park spot), and that they do the flavor tours as well! On this visit, I loved the following flavors: -Visor: roasted pistachio -Clay: Nutella brownie -Leather: brown butter and chocolate chip cookies This location also offers caramel pecan bars and freshly baked cookies, but I've yet to try them as they've been out each time I'm there. They are so sweet here. The girl right away was like, would you like our taster treat? She goes thru each flavor and with these silver spoons proceeds to give you every single flavor on a spoon. I think there is like 6. Some were better than others but none were bad. Beret was my favorite. A very small cup is a lot, I guess Gelato is expensive or you should only have a few bites? Not sure but pricey. Very smooth and flavor packed. It's called the hat shop which I don't get. They do have a few hats on the side wall on a shelf. But it seems more focus is on the Gelato? Maybe they needed to make it retail for rental purposes?? Anyways, they are next door to Tamarindo but they serve Gelato. If you love Gelato, pop in after dinner. read more

This is the cutest gelato store! I came here with my family and was greeted by kind workers who let us sample whatever we desired. The flavors were unique and the gelato flavors were yummy. My favorite was the passionfruit mango one. I got the small size and it was plenty to share. The portions are very generous! read more

Stopped by An's Hatmakers back in February since I wanted to try their Lunar New Year flavors. As always, they start you off with a flavor tour where you get to sample everything plus a palate cleanser before deciding what to order. It's a great experience if you don't know what you want, but it can slow things down since everyone takes their time tasting. Luckily, the staff is always super friendly, and the wait is worth it. When we went, there was only one person ahead of us, so we got through pretty fast. They tend to have some exotic flavors mixed in with their regular ones so and can be very hit or miss depending on personal preference. The flavors they had when we were there were: Leaf Hat Tasted a lot like chanh muối the Vietnamese salted lemon drink, but not quite the same. It was refreshing, but not really my thing--I'd rather just have the drink itself. Still cool to try. Straw Hat Super refreshing and full of flavor. The mango stood out more than the passion fruit and since it's vegan, the texture was a little different, being a little rougher and icier but still great. Not the most unique, but definitely tasty. Pho The wildest flavor on the menu and was much better than I was expecting. It didn't taste like a bowl of pho, but the herbs were spot on--it's exactly what you'd expect if you made a sweet, creamy version of pho. I wouldn't order it myself, but would recommend trying it if you ever get the chance. Phin My second favorite. It had a bold Vietnamese coffee flavor, which I loved. Not as sweet as a typical vietnamese coffee, which I definitly think worked out great for them. If you love coffee, this one's a must. Visor Easily my favorite thats also because I'm heavily biased toward pistachios. Super nutty with little roasted pistachio bits that made it extra creamy and chewy. Hands down the best thing on the menu for me. Velour Tasted like salted caramel, but leaned more on the caramel side. The salt wasn't too strong, which worked well for ice cream. Solid choice if you like caramel. Top Hat A very nutty and chocolatey gelato with a much stronger almond flavor than I was expecting and supposedly nutella mixed in even though I couldn't really taste it. I normally go for the most chocolately option the menu since I love chocolate but this more milk than dark chocolate. Overall, all of An's locations are always a great spot for gelato but this location is typically a lot less busy than their Dry Cleaner one. You can check their flavors online at each location before going and would recommend you stop by if you get the chance. read more

Went here for a friends last night in San Diego and it was a perfect treat. I appreciated being able to sample things and the scoops were a good size for me personally. The flavors are all really unique but they have more straightforward ones as well. The location is lovely and we caught a great sunset right outside. I would say this is more fancy ice cream so be prepared for that if you are bringing kids- no bubblegum or rocky road here. It's high quality though and definitely decadent. First time here. Wasn't too busy when we arrived. There are a few tables outside + a few inside. Limited flavors at a time, but I'm sure they rotate a variety. The service was quick and good. The interior décor was also cute. Gelato was good overall. Their espresso and cold brew was tasty. The mango passion fruit sorbet was OK- typical flavor, but did not taste artificial though, which was good. Same goes for the strawberry sorbet. Overall, quality was good. They also have different sizes (cups) vs party hat (cone). There is street parking or parking in the garage behind the plaza, which the 1st hour is free. An's Hatmakers is hands down my favorite gelato place. Its backstory, concept, and execution makes this place so special to me. Backstory: An's Hatmakers used to be a hat shop and when the hat shop closed, the owners of An's named the store "An's Hatmakers" in honor of the previous shop. The chain does this with all their locations as well. Everytime I'm in San Diego, I have to make a pit stop at An's! What makes An's special is their flavor tours. Feel free to ask for one if the workers didn't bring it up already! The workers are always so sweet, patient, and descriptive with their tours. The tour within itself makes the experience here feel so curated and fun! Every few weeks, they switch out some flavors and it's a hit everytime. My all-time favorite flavor is a mix of fascinator (strawberry sorbet) and the pallet cleanser they offer. I love mint and fruity flavors so this is such a good mix for me. Parking: There's street parking right in front of the store but also underground parking as well. read more

Big fan of An's Dry Cleaning so was surprised to see a Hatmaker version over in Del Mar! Food: Walked in and the girl helping us mentioned the free flavor tour where you can sample every flavor they have so we immediately opted in for that. Love the range of flavors they have and seems like they'll switch up some flavors regularly depending on holidays/seasons. Ended up choosing a small of the Calico split with the Witch's Hat to go with the fall vibes. Definitely will be back! Service: Shoutout to the worker who helped our group. She was nice and patient with all of us and she mentioned the flavor tour so she gets points for that. Ambiance: Small shop with only a couple of tables but good vibes inside and they're located in a great area to eat your ice cream outside too. This seasons flavors is fire! I wasn't a fan of their summer menu, but this one is less decadent and more full of flavor! Tips off to the creators. First time at this location and it wasn't too busy. The staff was attentive. The place was clean and well maintained. Thanks for a fantastic first experience at this location. I recommend the Hounds tooth for a chocolate peanut butter twist! The service was excellent. They offered to allow a tasting of all their flavors, and it sounds like they do this regularly. This is great for someone who is indecisive. Our favorite was the staff favorite, the cookies & cream. The salted caramel was slightly burnt, but honestly, it just reaffirms that they make it themselves. So in my mind, not a negative.
