Today, I brought in a box that was already packed and had the shipping label ready. I just needed to close one small section and asked if I could use their tape gun for a few seconds. I was going to do it myself. Apparently, the tape gun is for authorized personnel only. Instead, I was told I'd have to pay a service fee--or buy a $10 roll of packing tape. I understand charging for packing services. What I don't understand is refusing to let a customer use a tape gun for a few seconds to finish their own box, then turning a trivial request into a $10 sale. That's certainly one way to redefine customer service. After 15 years of consistently disappointing experiences, I think I've finally learned my lesson. There are plenty of shipping locations that understand that helping customers is actually part of the job. I'll be using one of them from now on.
