BRING CASH! The gate attendant is awful.
After driving over 2.5 hours from our home in GA with my High School Exchange student from Spain, the last thing I expected was to be made to feel like we had to leave at the entrance for not bringing cash!
We were a bit surprised to be waiting in line at the little gate house around noon today for people to pay to enter in their vehicles. It became clear why there was a line though. What an uncomfortable, rude and awful attitude the gate attendant had.
When I tried to hand him my credit card, he stared at me.
I said that there were two of us as the sign stated $3.00 per person 16 and up. He asked if I was kidding him. I was confused by his statement and asked why. He said that they certainly do not take credit cards. I said, Ok is there somewhere that I could pay with credit as all I had was a dollar or so in coins. I had no idea there was a Cash only policy. I looked all around the sign laden gate house and saw no indication that it was Cash only either. He told me he was sure that there were other places that I could use my credit card. I was stunned. I thought he must be joking. I asked him again if there was a place to pay by credit card, a form to fill out, anything as we just drove over 2 hours. He asked me if I would like a 'crying towel'. There was clearly a long line of cars behind us and could not believe that this gentleman was talking to us like this. I thought that this is part of the National Parks system? I felt like he wanted us to leave, to pull around the gate house and actually drive back down and leave without entering the .5 mile walk to the falls. I said again that we drove over 2 hours. He said that he also drove from Miami to me. I actually live in GA and my accent is clearly from NY. It was extremely uncomfortable. I looked at my host student and could see she was also visibly upset by this exchange. I said surely there is a way to pay to get into the park, and asked how again. He stared at me and I felt very uncomfortable. It was very upsetting. Finally he asked me how many people were in the car. I said 2. As he handed me two entry stickers, he told me to go to the gift shop and ask for either Anna or Doug and give them my credit card. This gentleman knew all along that we could have paid by credit card at the gift shop but instead insulted us, made us feel like we had to leave, almost had my host daughter in tears, etc. We did tell Anna and Doug in the gift shop about the exchange. At first they said, he must be having a bad day. Then said, well imagine that other people may not come and pay in the gift shop. When I said that this was all over $6, at a National Park for a woman and a teen that live in the state and came to see a waterfall...then they apologized to us. My host daughter couldn't believe what happened and that I kept being respectful and nice. Of course I did, I felt that this man at the gate had the power, which clearly got to his head, to make us turn around.
Let me say that the falls were lovely. But, unfortunately, I would never return there myself. Make sure you bring cash with you when you go. read more
