Bell Mountain is such a fun spot to visit, and the view from the top is absolutely unbeatable. The drive up can be a little nerve-racking -- the road is steep and winding -- but it definitely adds to the adventure. Once you reach the top, you can either climb the big rock or take the stairs, and both options are manageable for most visitors. While there isn't much else to do once you're up there, the stunning view alone makes it well worth the trip!

Clear views of the lake below.

Frankly, I didn't know about Bell Mountain having been Yelped. Our road trip to the mountains of Northern Georgia wouldn't be complete unless we went up the steep road to the top. A one lane going up or down made for a treacherous trip. The winding uphill battle with hairpin turns and narrow paved road was a challenge not only for the driver, but it put a strain on the vehicle as well. We finally reached the upper parking lot and saw we were not alone. Others have made their way up, and now it is our turn to marvel at the sights and take picture postcard fotos. Chatuge Lake below offered a vast Vista that is second to none. A clear and clean view for sure of Georgia and parts of North Carolina, but sadly, the sides of the rocky Bell Mountain outcropping of boulders and rocks have been tainted with all the colors of the paint department available at Home Depot. Graffiti to the maximum of anotherwise pretty Bell Mountain peak. We got back down safely in awe of the view but saddened by the human endeavor to leave a mark on everything.

Hiawassee, Georgia is a lake town of some renown among travelers from far and wide given the presence of Lake Chatuge that flows through and around the area and the various outdoor activities on offer in the mountains of North Georgia. Bell Mountain stands stark and tall looking down on the city and surrounding area. If you ask a local where to go, what to do and what to see, they'll tell you to visit this place.A narrow one lane road is your path by car, truck or motorcycle up the steep, no shoulder incline. For some, this trek is intimidating. The views say it all. You can see four states from the summit: GA, NC, SC, and TN. It's truly quite spectacular and worthy of a visit.

Don't miss this natural beauty! view is absolutely stunning and worth the trip--you can view Georgia , North Carolina, South Carolina and the mountains of Tennessee on a sunny day. Catch both majestic sunrise and sunset!

I gotta admit I thought Brasstown Bald would have a better view, but Bell Mountains absolutely kills it! Painting in the rocks were once permitted (unfortunately, not anymore) and it left a beautiful view that is pure art. You don't see this very often. Have in mind the road is very narrow, and twisty. It's almost scary to drive up there, so be careful. Once you get to the top of the mountain the 360 degree views of the village, and lake Chatuge are absolutely breathtaking. Parking, and entry is free, but everything is at your own risk.

I have been wanting to go and see Bell Mountain for years! It's the only mountain I know of in GA that is covered with graffiti art and I could just imagine all the cools pictures I could get. Not to mention, the 360 degree views that you can see from several pavilion decks! I went on a cloudy rainy day and it was still impressive, so I can't imagine how breathtaking it would be on a clear day! You will need a car with 4 wheel drive to get up to the parking area, because the road on the way up is windy, very narrow and paved. And it is so worth it, so be sure to add this place to your list to explore the next time you are in or near Hiawassee.

As some locals we met in previous places suggested, we decided to drive 36 minutes outside of Helen to visit Bell Mountain located in Hiawassee. There you can enjoy one of the best views of Georgia. Additionally, you can see four states from the top all together. Amazing, isn't it? Some tips: You definitely need a car in very good condition to visit this place. The road to get to the top of the mountain is narrow (only one car at a time) and there are 90 degree curves. After reaching the top there is a small space where you can park and continue climbing the rest of the mountain or you can take the risk of climbing the rest of the mountain in your car but it isn't safe. This place is completely free. Despite the fact that I got dizzy on the road and wanted to vomit. All those symptoms disappear once you reach the top and take in the wonderful view. It's heaven on earth!

I've seen views all over the world from Fiji, Brazil, Spain, Netherlands, Iceland and more. In the moment you're always thinking this is the greatest view I have ever seen. In the moment when I was looking at the view from the top of Bell Mountain I thought it was the greatest view I had ever seen. Driving up to the summit makes this opportunity to view this epic overlook easy for anyone. I highly recommend going here to snap some pictures around sunset but then putting your phone in your car and just taking in the moment at peace.

    Stacey F.

The views are amazing! You can drive right up to the site so if you have trouble hiking, no problem! Careful on the one lane road to get there!

Piano from the top! Sorry I couldn't keep my phone straight

Well, the drive to get here made this FL girl squeal a couple times (narrow roads! Insane inclined!), but it was well worth it! The view from the top of Bell Mountain was truly spectacular, especially with some storm clouds over the mountains to the north. Definitely a great place to watch the boats motor around the lake below and just relax. I'm also a huge fan of the graffiti, but am glad that not all mountain tops are like this ;) unique photo ops for sure! Boardwalks/stairs are well maintained and get you at even better views than just at the pavement. If you're in town, you gotta stop by!

An easy to get to, amazing place. Don't miss the spectacular views! Even on a stormy evening, it was absolutely beautiful.

I have a sad update this 3rd day of November, 2018! You can no longer spray paint on the rocks! As of my last review you could, but selfish human beings that decided to spray paint on the asphalt, wooden deck/steps and flagpole have ruined it for everyone! Still an amazing view with absolutely no hiking required. 2018/80 = = = = = = = = = = PREVIOUS REVIEW: It is hard for me to explain just how much I love this place, but I'll try! * I love it for the TERRIFYING drive up the mountainside, wondering around ever twisty bend if I'm going to encounter another vehicle that might be unpassable (and which of us will be the first to retreat). * I love it for the sign near the top that says that says: WARNING - STEEP GRADE. Vehicles travel beyond this point AT YOUR OWN RISK. There is a lower parking area right before the sign, which is 300 feet below the upper parking area. I must have sat there debating for 5 minutes whether I wanted to risk it! * I love it for the colorful graffiti that blankets the rocky mountain peak. Typically, defacing nature brings me to a deep rage, but here it almost feels majestic. I even plan to bring spray of my own when I return with my family. Painting on the rock is actually permitted, but painting on the wooden steps and platform structures is not. * I love it for not having a fee. You can tell this place is regular maintained by the well built stairs and observation deck system, as well as the freshly paved road. But there is no charge to visit, unlike nearby Brasstown Bald where the entry fee is $5 per person. * I love it for its history as a few men tried unsuccessfully to mine it for minerals, but scarred it for life. How locals would rather the beauty of the mountain remain a secret for fear others would come to do more damage by stripping its resources. * BUT MOST OF ALL, I love it for its incredible 360 degree views, especially of the town of Hiawassee and Lake Chatuge in the valley below. The view of the lake is even better than from the observation deck @ Brasstown Bald. Another bonus is there is a viewing platform at the parking level for handicap or elderly people who aren't very mobile, or you can climb about 110 steps to two other viewing platforms. FINAL THOUGHTS Weather conditions make each visit a new experience. Some will have clear views while others will have a sea of low-lying clouds that make distant mountains look like islands in an ocean of white foam. Whatever awaits you in terms of a view, Bell Mountain will not disappoint!!!

Probably my favorite mountain top in all of Georgia. Best views (minus the graffiti). PLEASE be respectful & DO NOT add more graffiti to such a beautiful natural landmark. Let's have a little more respect for Mother Nature! Quick & easy hike for people of all ages (kiddos & grandparents included!) with the most incredible scenery.

I came here to observe 4 states from the highest point in Georgia, but apparently the observation tower is in such bad shape that it is now closed to the public and your adventure will end after climbing a few flights of stairs ending at the base of the observation deck yeah there's a view from the lower level but in my opinion not worth the price of admission. Thankfully there's a shuttle van that takes you from the parking lot level to the top it runs about ever 10 minutes, our driver was very friendly and tried his best to entertain us during the short drive to the top but there's not much to say - the museum at the top is okay and takes about 2 minutes to tour it then time you walk the lower deck and wait for the shuttle back down - I purchased a refrigerator magnet for the RV from the gift shop and headed for the truck. It is located near the Chattahoochee Forest and Vogel Park and has spectacular views and vistas. It is a true gem and deserves its own review. It is a great little "get away" and a great place to go and re-acquaint yourself with nature, history and wonderful people. The town plays host to several festivals and community activities, (Friday night concerts) throughout the year. Although we were in town for the Mountain Heritage Festival, we wandered into town for breakfast and to see the historic courthouse which literally sits in the center of town where you can't miss it. A traffic circle directs you around the building. This town seems to be run by volunteers who love their town and its history. They were throughout the various venues and just full of useful information. We had such a nice visit, that we are considering returning to the fall festival when the weather is cooler and we are able to see the trees change color. If you come for a festival, you must have a meal downtown and take a look around. There is plenty of convenient public parking available. When you are traveling to Blairsville, you will encounter long winding roads that can appear to be a bit precarious. However just hang in there and you will be fine. These roads are very popular with cyclists, drivers of sport cars, and motorcyclists so you must be cautious and TAKE YOUR TIME. We actually were stuck behind a group of cyclists, so we simply put our hazard lights on and hunkered down while staying about two car lengths back. It is simply not safe to pass on these challenging roads. If you have ever ridden a bike on the street, you can appreciate how scary it must be to be on a winding mountain road and have an aggressive driver on your tail. Just be kind! The sorghum festival will be taking place during the first weekend in October, so make a plan!

The dam is 307 feet high and holds 67 billion gallons of water. Hiwassee Lake is about 22 miles. The dam took 1600 men four years to build before being completed in 1940. At the time it cost $24 million to build. The dam generates enough electricity for 28,000 homes. The views are breathtaking here so if you are in the area this remarkable piece of work.

Stonewall Creek Falls is located on the trail known as Stonewall Falls & White Twister Mountain…read moreBike Trail. It's an 11.5 mile trail used most often by mountain bikes (as the name would imply) and has multiple wet creek crossings. The parking area & trailhead are off Stonewall Creek Road, also known as Crooked Oak Road on one end and Carleton English Road on the other. Three names in less than 3 miles of road, but you would only know this if you are looking at Google Maps. [ DIRECTIONS ] The trailhead is approx. 1.3 miles from paved South Main Street in Tiger, GA. The road is gravel with no signage, but a small utility building with two power boxes surrounded by a chain link fence sits right on the corner. The road is a touch bumpy and is best for trucks, Jeeps, SUV's and vehicles with more clearance, but a car COULD make it through. [ THE TRAIL ] You'll know you've arrived when you reach a small forest service gate with a niche large enough for about 3 cars. There is also sufficient room for several more cars to park roadside. The Mountain Bike Trail has a 1492 foot elevation change and encompasses some of the roadway past the parking area. However, to get to the waterfall, go through the gate, cross the small creek and continue left downhill for about 1/2 mile. The waterfall will come into view near a large open camping area. [ THE FALLS ] The easiest waterfall to reach is the one at the camping area. It's approximately 20 feet tall. HOWEVER, there is another waterfalls upstream of the main falls, but it is difficult to reach. Scouting reports I have read say to use a steep side trail 100 yards or so further uptrail past the falls. You will see two faint trails and I've been told the first of the two is the better option, but be careful, BOTH are STEEP. I tried the second trail (didn't know the first trail was the better option at the time) and only made it halfway before turning back. It felt against my better judgement to try this alone with my tiny little dog. So I plan to come back on another day when I have another crazy adventurer with me for support (and possibly a 911 call). Just slightly upstream from the main falls is an easier path to Stonewall Creek. My thought is to try to wade through the river to the upper falls, which are far prettier according to some of the pics I've witnesses on hiking trail galleries: https://mtnimages.smugmug.com/Hiking-With-Mtnimages/Hike-to-Stonewall-Creek/i-bdsqddz/A TIP - If you hike upstream looking for the side trail to the upper falls and make it to a creek crossing, you've gone too far! There is also another waterfall downstream of the main falls, but requires some mountain goat skills and bushwacking, which I'm hoping to get into this summer as I want to trailblaze to more remote waterfalls. [ THINGS TO KNOW ] Hiking Distance: 1 miles (round trip to main falls) Difficulty: Easy & family friendly (main waterfall) Difficulty: Strenuous & dangerous (upper and lower falls) Creek Crossings: YES (1) small stream at the beginning Elevation Gain: n/a Waterfall Height: Approx 18-20 feet (main) Access to top of falls: NO Access to base of falls: YES Pool of water @ base of Falls: YES Sitting areas @ base: YES + camping area RESTROOMS: NO PARKING: YES (3+ cars) [ FINAL THOUGHTS ] I enjoy hiking very much! The beauty, serenity and adventure calls to me and the peace that comes from such adventures is simply unmatched. The only thing that disturbs my hiking serenity is when I can't reach my destination. I'm stubborn and bullheaded like that! The first waterfall was nice, but my mission was to see all three, or at the very least the main falls AND the upper falls.... so I left disappointed. Still, it was one of several waterfalls I toured today as I scouted new trails for my hiking groups 2020 expeditions. This is a great short hike to add to other longer hikes when looking to fill up a day. NOTE TO SELF: Be better prepared next time with trail map downloads and GPS trackers that work even offline to better navigate to falls that are off-trail. Also, bring a machete just in case some light bushwacking is required. 2020 / 9

However, you can drive to the top where there is parking. If you do that, you'll miss the Jackson County Confederate Memorial that is midway on the stairs. The Historical Jackson County Courthouse is a 1913 Classical Revival structure that towers on a hill above and at the end of Sylva's main street. It has served here until 1994 when the new Justice Center opened a couple of miles away. It sat unused for several years until it was refreshed and restored, reopening in 2011 as the Jackson County Public Library complex that includes the Jackson County Historical Association, the Genealogical Society, and the Arts Council. Two stories and constructed of painted brick, it has a monumental portico at the front with large classical columns and is topped with a three-stage cupola above the central block. If you've been to Marshall NC, it does look a lot like the Madison County Courthouse. [Review 531 of 2026 - 4626 in North Carolina - 25713 overall]

It's the West Ridge Falls Access Trail. The trailhead parking area is woefully small, so you may not get a parking spot if you arrive during a busy time. Another advantage of the walking trial is going by an old crashed car from Prohibition on the side of the hill. There's a photo in the visitor's center if you miss it. It's cool to see the beginning of the Appalachian trail behind the visitor's center. There's a nice photo spot with a stone arch. We didn't stay at the lodge but went there after our hike for the famous view. Unfortunately it was foggy that day. Still, it's a cool lodge with a large window in the lobby and seating outside to enjoy the glorious view. There's a kickass map of the Appalachian trail on the lobby wall.
