I had my haircut about 1 week before my wedding and I was looking for a quick touch up. I came…read moreacross Hair by Tin Thi on Yelp. I was a bit worried because Asian male hair can often be tricky to cut and mess ups show up big time if there are mistakes. I decided to give him a try and I'm so glad I did. My hair looked amazing and I actually had a bunch of compliments the week leading up to my wedding. I barely needed any hair product. He also gave me a bunch of tips on how to style my hair. Overall, worth the cost. Def a premium haircut for a very fair price.

They all gave nice haircuts, but none of them understood my hair. I have naturally wavy Asian hair, thick, textured, and not the kind you can cut like fine hair. They'd flatten the heck out of my hair and cut it. My hair would look good for one day and then never look the same again. Then I found Tin after seeing a few photos of Asian girls who got their hair cut by him, and I am SO glad I did. He genuinely understands my hair type. He doesn't just give a standard cut--he tweaks the shape, layers, and texture so it works for my hair and for my everyday styling. For the first time since moving, my hair looks great the next day... and the next! He listens, gives thoughtful opinions without being pushy, and never tries to sell you products. He's easygoing, easy to talk to, and makes the whole appointment feel relaxed and enjoyable. If you have Asian hair or thicker, wavy hair, go see Tin. He gets it. And I couldn't be happier with the results.

I would like to thank Magnolia salon for its availability (I was able to book a same day…read moreappointment, unheard of in Marin!) and the incredibly lovely staff: a very special thank you to Susan. I arrived with an absolute emergency of a mess, a cut off all your hair, how did I get here, MESS. Major chemical/product damage, it was not viable. I was fully resigned to a short bob for a complete restart, but she was able to use her skill to come up with what she called a "custom haircut" and that's exactly what it was. Where the texture was once straw/sandpaper, is now silk. I cannot recommend Susan enough! If she can make sunshine come out of THIS experience, I can only imagine what she is capable of working with other clients. It was very kind of all the ladies in the salon to come and give their recommendations as well, I really felt like everyone came together and saved what they could of my hair! It feels amazing today and I am so incredibly grateful. Thank you Susan, you are a gem and I will recommend you to all those who are looking for an exceptional hair artist. I'll see you next time!!

There are so many great shops, cafés, and places to wander before or after an appointment. Pros: Online Booking - Super easy and convenient. Salon Atmosphere - Clean, modern, stylish, and welcoming. Haircut Skill - Very good! I was happy with my haircut. Con: Stylist Tone - The only reason I'm not giving five stars is my experience with Susan's communication style. While talking with a coworker, she used the word "retarded" to describe a TV show episode she didn't like. I understand she wasn't directing it at a person and had no way of knowing that I have a child with disabilities, but it's a word that's difficult for me to hear. Others may feel differently, and I'm not suggesting there was any ill intent. It simply left me feeling that we weren't the right fit. There were also a few comments that came across as dismissive or condescending, though I don't think that was the intention. For example, when discussing the condition of my hair, the delivery felt more like a scolding than guidance. As the saying goes, it's not always what you say, but how you say it. Overall, I found her communication style sharper and more pompous than I personally prefer, and I tend to gravitate toward a warmer, more down-to-earth vibe. To be clear, this is not a criticism of Susan's technical skills. She gave me a great haircut, and I genuinely love the result. For me, it was simply a matter of communication style and personal fit. Overall, I would absolutely return to the salon but with a different stylist and recommend it because the con is very much a personal preference thing, nothing related to the skill or salon environment itself.

I've been coming here since their earlier location, and the consistency has been remarkable. Coming from a European background, I've found it surprisingly difficult to find a truly reliable hair salon in the U.S. I kept my hair long for years -- partly out of caution -- until one of Cooper Alley's apprentices approached me during May Madness event in San Rafael. I took a chance, and it reset my relationship with hair salons entirely. I trust stylists again. In fact, I now tend to measure other salons by whether they carry the same product lines Cooper Alley does -- the best in the world. Rick Cooper, the founder, is an artist in the truest sense. His influence extends far beyond this salon; through his training, there are now dozens of trusted salons across Marin and the Bay Area -- a quiet but significant legacy. Ally, a co-founder, has an exceptional eye for color. Alyona, a newer co-owner originally from Odessa, Ukraine, brings clarity, conviction, and range to everything she touches. Miriam adds a refined European sensibility, and the next generation -- including Holland and Cathy -- carry the craft forward with confidence and care. Cooper Alley isn't just a salon. It's a gold standard.
