I love that Anise offers at least a few non-Americanized options on their menu along with the Americanized standbys. I tried the Chongquing spicy chicken. It gets a lot of credit for being available in Riverdale, but it's not at the level of what's on offer in Queens or the Sichuan restaurants I've been to in midtown/midtown west/upper west side areas. Also, this and the spicy shredded beef were ever so slightly burnt. This wasn't breath of the wok, it was past that into singed and bitter territory. Would I get either of those dishes again? Yeah, because I don't have a choice based on geography, but the burned flavor was disappointing. Hopefully it won't be burned the next time. The steamed dumplings were solid. Nothing to write home about, but solid. The American Chinese dishes were what you'd expect. I wish there was a section of the menu that made it clear which food is made the way it was originally intended and which offerings are Americanized. The twice cooked pork, while having a little kick, wasn't what I was expecting (no leeks, minimal green chilis, no fermented black beans, covered in brown sauce, much milder). I like that I can order both from the same restaurant, but since moving out of Queens, I'm still really missing non-Americanized Chinese food. I'll be back, though. My husband and I decided to give Anise another try. We hadn't eaten there in a while. Our server, Tony was so friendly and genuine. He was knowledgeable and made some suggestions. We had a tasty lunch and we returned again on Saturday evening, 12/20. This time Jay was taking our order and made great recommendations. Jay was extremely endearing, friendly and personable. Mary had a little lamb...with scallions and onions. It was the best Asian lamb dish she'd ever had. The veggies were perfectly cooked Al dente and the dish was not drowning or swimming in sauce, letting the delicious flavor shine. The new chef at this popular Riverdale establishment under new management knows what he's doing! And the staff are all very welcoming and accommodating. My friend loved her Spring rolls, steamed chicken dumplings and edamame. I just saw some earlier negative reviews that probably predated the overhauling of this eatery. We are delighted to find this place with very fine and varied Chinese food in our neighborhood. About ten days ago, we ordered take-out: wonton and hot and sour soup; Chinatown tofu, and a beef dish called Love in the Sky. The food came quickly, was hot, brightly-colored, and very flavorful. We went to Anise tonight to eat in: a quiet, friendly place, with fine congenial service from our waitperson AXEL. The food was tasty, unpretentious, flavorful; the vegetables were fresh and crisp. My wife's tofu with vegetables was delicious, and I enjoyed my double sauteed sliced pork and had leftovers to take home. This isn't a trendy place. "Asian (con)fusion" is not the order of the day. But the very substantial menu has Hunan, Szechuan, Cantonese, and "healthy" cuisine, something for everyone. You will notice, if you scroll down, that there are a few carping reviews, but they have so much more to do with complaints about delivery than anything else. There was so much wrong with my order here and I can say I will not be returning. And that says a lot as I rarely write places off without giving them at least two tries. The service. The woman who took my order seemed as though I was bothering her. Very unfriendly. But also, I've noticed this must be cultural because I have never gotten happy and pleasant ordering from any Chinese/Asian inspired places. So I let that roll off. The food. First off it was expensive. $70 for 2 orders of shrimp in garlic sauce, boneless spare ribs, and dumplings. I asked for extra bbq sauce on the ribs. If what I got was extra, the normal must be literally a drop. The white rice was hard. The shrimp in garlic sauce was bland and there were so many random vegetables in this dish I don't even know what some where. Ie this green stuff (looked like cooked seaweed or purple cabbage) and these white items (not water chestnuts or bamboo shoots) in the pictures. It was random. I ate there a few days ago. It was just around the cutoff time for the lunch special. I ordered a dish with beansprouts, which was on the regular menu. After a while the waiter returned and said they did not have beansprouts, so I ordered snow peas. Why didn't he tell me earlier so I could have changed it for a lunch special? When I was finished I asked that the rest of my meal be wrapped up to go. I motioned to my dish and to the bowl of rice. When I got home, no rice. Been a steady patron for a couple of years but the establishment has been declining this year. Last month I purchased a lunch special with fried rice and to my surprise, the rice was spoiled. When I called the restaurant, they apologized and asked me to bring it in. When I did later after my shift, the reaction was simply a nonchalant matter and gave me a replacement. I'd been searching for a great Chinese spot for quite some time and this place delivered! Literally and figuratively! Often I've found myself picking through chicken trimmings and breading to be disappointed... not the case here! The sesame chicken had huge pieces of tender and juicy chicken perfectly battered. I never really write reviews anymore and I typically am pretty laid back if something isn't "perfect" but this was disgusting. That is not cold sesame noodles. Though we live in the neighborhood, we haven't been to this restaurant since before CoVid. Bad choice. We were quickly seated but sensed the waitress was angry for some reason. Within moments of being seated, she came to take our order and again seemed upset we weren't ready to order. We placed out order and the food came quickly. My wife's order was wrong but she didn't want to complain. The General Tso's Chicken I ordered came with cold broccoli. Before we were finished the waitress tried to remove our plates. Ate it and immediately got drowsy 15min after finishing the food... cool didn't think much of it took a nap, keep in mind this was the only meal I ate for lunch and basically my dinner since it was a lot of food. Last week, we received a shiny new menu from Anise. It came in the mail and was not left in our lobby or scattered around our hallways. I admired their effort and the menu looked pretty intriguing. We thought about take-out, but instead visited the establishment for an immersive experience. Upon arriving, we immediately noticed a nearly empty dining room (and this was prime-time). Someone came to seat us, which is when we noticed the shabby condition of the dining chairs. Our menus stuck to the table. Clearly, the only money they've spent on the place in quite some time was on their menu mailing. Our server looked harried and wasn't able to communicate well with us. The other people working there just scowled at us (and each other). Our food arrived - everything we ordered (appetizers, entrees, etc.) all at once. We were never offered chop sticks (which we routinely use). Forget about chili paste or any other condiments that would have been suitable. The food was meh, at best. No flavor. And the moo shu pancakes were actually store-bought tortillas, right out of the bag. I'm glad we went. Now we know to never patronize them again. It's a shame, because the critical mass to support a good quality Chinese restaurant is certainly present in Riverdale. read more

Updating to say that they've renovated the whole interior! The place looks so great now, chic clean and spacious. We love their food and come here often how did we not know they have an awesome lunch special??? The lunch special comes with a smaller portion of whatever you usually order, soup with fried noodles, and an egg roll. It feels like so much food and for less money. Also try their new specials menu. So far we've had the pork dumplings (pictured) which were so good. And the sliced chicken vinaigrette which was really good TO ME lol I loved it because it's different. It comes cold and spicy with slices of cucumber. Visited Anise for the first time last-night after having their takeout a few weeks ago. The restaurant has a casual and comfortable feel and everyone was very polite. I visited on a Saturday night and it was perfect, a few other tables but not crowded at all. There are crunchy noodles on the table for you to enjoy during your meal. We ordered wonton soup and egg rolls for an appetizer. Their wonton soup is one of my favorites from the area and I would recommend. For dinner we ordered the chicken and broccoli and sesame chicken. I love their chicken and broccoli because the chicken seems high quality and isn't chewy like some of the other places. When we couldn't finish all the food, our waiter wrapped up the leftovers and even gave us some extra rice to go along with it. Our waiter was very polite and always made sure we had a full glass of water and all the staff seemed very friendly. Food at Anise alternates between OK and awful, and I hit it on an awful day. For lunch I ordered a simple kung po chicken dish. For some reason it was covered in a thick, sweet, brown tar-sauce. I guess I should be grateful that there wasn't very much chicken in it. I don't know what came over me but instead of sending it back I ate it and my tummy feels bad for doing it.
