We have been ordering from Golden Gate for many years and realized we never reviewed this little gem of a restaurant! The staff is always so polite when we order and the food never disappoints! It's a very small space so we always order for delivery or pick up. Our orders have covered sooooo many choices - seafood, ribs (the best in the area), duck, chicken, beef. I ordered shrimp & broccoli for $10.95 and only received 3 shrimp in my order. When I called to see if they made a mistake I was told they put 4 shrimp in there. They should call this rice & broccoli with a sampling of shrimp. I will never order from there again. I've ordered this dish from many Chinese restaurants I have never received less than 6 -8 shrimp. The restaurant owner seems vindictive. I placed an order on December 17, 2023, around 6:49 p.m., but the delivery person was extremely disrespectful. He avoided eye contact, didn't respond when I greeted him, and appeared angry or upset. I called the restaurant to express my concerns about the delivery person's attitude. It seems my complaint did not sit well with the owner. On January 25, 2024, I placed another order at around 3:05 p.m., but it was canceled because they claimed to be "too busy" to complete it. After calling them, they suddenly agreed to accommodate the same order for pickup. I agreed and received a call when the food was ready. I asked for it to be delivered, but the owner insisted I pick it up myself. I eventually agreed, but I couldn't find the restaurant--though maybe it's fortunate, as I'm not sure what they might have put in the food. I suspect the owner's decision to cancel the delivery and insist on pickup was an attempt to punish and embarrass me for complaining about the delivery person. read more

Lousy food! Avoid this "greasy spoon" at all costs! To call this "food" is quite a stretch, as it left my taste buds feeling very underwhelmed. Their lack of flavor and spice is is a disgrace, as they clearly care NOTHING about their customers! The fried rice was bland, greasy and tasted old. The beef with broccoli was woefully devoid of any taste. Their kung pao chicken was in a murky and slimy excuse for a sauce. Have they no shame? Would it kill them to use ginger or garlic? The food is usually pretty good and they give you fairly large portions for a reasonable price but my issue with them is that their ATTITUDE is EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL!!! They have a tendency to get really NASTY and RUDE when they're busy taking orders, and then they are SO CONDESCENDING to the customers. The old woman who answers the phone is SO RUDE and told my mother that she "doesn't need her business". Ask yourself, who says that to a customer who orders often?! This is totally unacceptable! Well, "we certainly DON'T NEED THEM", especially since we are PAYING them! Two stars is not what I would have given six months ago before the pandemic. The food is good and deserves 4 stars. I enjoy and recommend it. However, in the last 3 visits I have walked out after seeing no masks on the staff, including the person handling food and cash at the same time with no mask and gloves. It's a shame. Visited them 3 times, I pick up my orders, so I physically go there. First time, they had no heat, I froze while I waited, no one there and I had to make a seat, they had stuff on the tables, food was eh! Second visit, still cold, dirty tables with no one there, Ordered Crab sticks, basically Tofu, and it was the worst. Third visit, today, place is opened, chairs are blocking the counter, it is the Covid scare, so I get it, they want distance, no one asks if I need help, I then go to place my order, and I'm immediately ask to leave, put a sign in the front, close your doors. I know several people were not happy with this place and I don't know if the chef changed but I ordered delivery last night and I was very happy. Hot and sour soup was just that. Hot and sour! The veggies were cut nicely and the broth was not goopy or starchy. The beef and broccoli was very nice. Tender beef and the broccoli was still a bit crunchy. The sauce was just enough and flavorful. The shrimp lo mein was beautiful. Lots of shrimp and noodles were perfect. The general Zao's chicken was crispy with not too much sauce. The sauce coated the chicken wonderfully! I asked for extra spicy but for me it could have been spicer. The lady who took my order over the phone was polite, read me back my order and set expectations by telling me it was a little busy and that it would take up to an hour. Steer clear. More than once, I've ordered delivery from this restaurant and, more than once, this restaurant has failed to make ANY delivery at all or to give any indication of why that might be. I've had to chase down intermediaries to get my money back via Grubhub, and generally just think that your time and money are best spent at another establishment. Not sure about the other reviewers. I needed to let the people of Riverdale and Kingsbridge know the truth! Of course, there are many Chinese take-out places nearby. I've tried them all - and each, many, many times over the course of the last 10 years. I never realized this Golden Gate is the same restaurant that used to be on Johnson Ave. During the pandemic, they were among the first a Chinese restaurants to reopen, which is why I even tried them. I can't believe for so many years I was eating subpar Chinese food when this gem was at my fingertips!!! As a pescatarian, I can only speak of the vegetable and shrimp dishes. Their shrimp dumplings are DIVINE. Like, dim sum at Shun Lee or Chinatown but even better. Shocking. Their sesame tofu is the best I've ever had. Their sesame shrimp is hands down the best in Riverdale. It is so unassuming and evening unsightly just driving past it, and I really learned you can't judge a Chinese place by its cover. Shame on me. I've ordered 5 times in the last few weeks and Golden Gate will be my go-to Chinese place in Riverdale going forward. read more

HIDDEN GEM. I grew up going to their old location - probably once a week with my family - and I was devastated when I saw it had closed. I happened to drive by this current location a few weeks ago and hoped it was the same place, not just the same name. We ordered from them that night and when I went to pick up the food, I chatted with the guy, and found out that it's still the same family's business! We've ordered from them several times since and everything has been delicious every single time. So far we've had the shrimp and scallops in black bean sauce, wonton soup, beef with string beans, chicken lo mein, pork fried rice, spare ribs (OMG GET THEM)...and when I wouldn't take a free soda, the gentleman insisted I take some homemade almond cookies instead. Where to start . . spare ribs were small, old, so overcooked that one couldn't chew them, the egg roll was totally tasteless. the chicken mei fun had zero taste, the rice tasted like dishwater, the baby bok choy was watery and tasteless. But more than that was the response I got upon calling to have the order picked up and have the cost refunded to my credit card. Because i had requested no extra salt the man who dealt with me kept trying to put the burden of this lousy meal on me even though I said, several times, that the egg roll was already made so that had nothing to do with salt; the noodles could of had other spices like ginger, garlic, cilantro; the old, burnt ribs had nothing to do with salt; and watery bok choy has nothing to do with salt. And then he came to my home with the refund slip and to take back the atrocious food and started blaming me all over again. They used to be somewhat decent when they had a restaurant on Johnson Avenue. That's history now. Ever since they moved to 231st Street, the food and service went down the hill, BIG TIME. The texture, taste and appearance of the food would kill anyone's appetite. And good luck if you happen to call for delivery -- not only do you have to wait and wait for it, but they invariably get it wrong, so you end up with cold food that wasn't what you ordered in the firs place.
