As an avid reptile and pet enthusiast and owner of exotic reptiles I love to visit any pet store when I have the chance coming out of state where I live we're not allowed to have venomous animals so coming to Texas was very fun and exciting unfortunately this was worst experience I've ever had in a pet store across every state I've ever been to nothing to do with the employees as I didn't even interact with them just walked around, looking at cages with horrible husbandry chameleons with no misting system every lizard and snake with a dry bowl that you can tell they just let get dry and then refill again never scrubbed or cleaned there's ,dead animals in cages all of their snakes are just in totes stacked on top of each other with no heat gradient or places to go to or away from a heat source one of the mammals was giving birth and when they went in there to check on it, they found another dead one in a different cage and exclaimed it loud enough for everybody to hear that there's a dead one in here very sad to see the conditions of this place, and the animals with lost lives read more

Very disappointing experience. This was our first pet as a family, and we came in expecting help and kindness. Staff seemed irritated by our presence. We purchased a tank and filter, and the filter stopped working after only 3 days. We also bought food our pet wouldn't eat. I was told to bring it back, but when I did, I was told they couldn't accept it. If that's the policy, that's fine--but customers shouldn't be told one thing and then denied later. read more

I had an algae bloom in my fish tank. I went there because it was close in the neighborhood to get an allergy eating fish. The Potamus was about seven dollars. A spiny nose allergy eater was 20 bucks. Me and my boy friend accidentally went to the back and there was a 30-40 feeder mice crammed into a 10 gallon tank eating eating each other there were probably 3-5 body's that were already eaten they were also very skinny. I understand there feeder mice or seemed like they were but this is disgusting all the reptiles are in tanks wayyy to small and they have beta fish a vase not even the size of my hand. Oh and the rabbits are also in cages probably big enough for a tiny baby hamster every single cage is filled with feces.and the place smells so bad it made me and my boyfriend physically sick. read more

My daughter bought a Pink Toed Tarantula, and we have no experience with any type of spider. The health and behavior of her tarantula quickly declined and my daughter was heartbroken. We rushed her tarantula back to this store late one night and they were so kind to calm us down and personally call the boss, Trey. He explained that she was likely dehydrated and that we really need to make sure that its humid in her enclosure, that a bowl of water is not enough. We did, and she immediately perked back up! He saved her tarantulas life, and we are forever thankful. We also figured out that she absolutely will not eat any crickets from other pet stores...only the ones from this store! I called the shop and asked if they had a Guyana Boa in stock, they did and gave me the price. She was nice enough to send me some pictures via text. I made arrangements to drive down from Dallas the next day and purchase the boa. We drove down and everyone there was super friendly and made us feel very welcome. We ended up also getting a Blood python from them and all the necessities for their tanks. They were all very reasonably priced and had a selection of everything we needed. I really like this store and I have been going here to buy my pet needs for years! The owners are passionate about animals and it shows. When I ask questions, I feel like I am actually getting good service and answers whereas at the most other pet stores, it's all about making the sale. First and last time going into this store. I ask for a particular pet supply and the guy behind the counter rolled his eyes and gave me a general direction to look, not helpful at all!!! Too many items placed in front of the Entrance/Exit where staff and customers congregate. Had to ask twice to be able to exit the store. Once politely and again not so politely. Then the "helpful" guys at the counter remarked I should say excuse me. Maybe he didn't hear me the first time because It was hard to hear over the kids playing and running in the store! I literally walked into this store, asked for help finding something, found the item myself and walked back to the counter. Easily one of the most disgusting pet stores that I have ever been in. They keep their bones (shoulder, thigh, chicken feet, etc.) in a rack of buckets near the front door. While the variety of bones was appreciated... I almost hurled when I saw the number of bugs and creepy crawlies that were eating their way through the marrow and dried flesh still attached to the bones. I am choosing to remove my previous review that I posted approximately 3 days ago. I have been advised by more than one person, two of them very close friends that I trust, that I am opening myself up for a libel lawsuit with my prior review. I believe it's a pretty sad state of affairs when you are taken into a court of law and asked to pay ridiculous amounts of money just because you wrote your opinion of a place of business on a computer site that is designed for people gathering to write their opinions on places of businesses. (yes- I know that sentence is way too long- I really don't care) It's not as though I said the mother's owner dresses him funny or anything of that nature-- and no- the owner is a fine dresser. That was just a silly example for Yelp's sake. I'm concerned about the animals and in my opinion it smells very bad and is consistently dirty. There is also a huge overcrowding problem in the cages in the guinea pig, hamster, mice, and the other smaller creatures kept in the glass walled in room with (in my opinion) inadequate ventilation and lack of fresh air. I wish the owner no harm- I have very, very strong personal opinions as to how animals should be cared for, especially in a pet store setting. The owner and I do not see eye to eye on this. It is for this reason that , personally, I myself, choose to go elsewhere for my pet store purchases. Animal Ark had a huge selection of many different items for many kinds of pets. They are a little overpriced, but for the convenience of location --- I would be happy to pay the extra money. If only.... and this is a huge IF ONLY... the animals were better cared for, and the store kept cleaner with a few air purifiers - everyone would be healthier and happier--- and I bet sales would go up dramatically. Would love to come back here. I have been here several times! Most of the times coming here has been a very pleasant experience. Until today. We brought in some friends and their child to meet some different animals as they are looking to get another animal. I'm the kind of person that will hold anything and I asked to hold a reptile and the rude employee there that has worked at Petco before with bright blue hair asked the lady helping me to watch the register as she had to get fish for another employee. Very kindly the girl helping me said I can but I'm helping a guest. As the employee with the blue hair walked away she spoke out loud in front of her customers "I know she's not going to buy anything." Right after that we all left because of the disrespect given. If people want to hold something because it sparks their interest and they would like to learn more about an animal, the employees should be professional enough and courteous to make sure they are educating their customers. For her knowledge I was in there to purchase an animal and she needs to learn how to be respectful. This store has lost business and profit because of the disrespect given today. Hope this problem gets nipped. Until then I will take my business elsewhere. read more

My family in total has gotten four cats and a Guinea pig from this store. They are very helpful and really love the animals at this store.

This place is dirty and stinky and one time one of their mice ran right in front of me on the floor! But with that being said it is a pet store and they are very knowledgeable and friendly every time we go in there. They have recently added saltwater fish to their stock and hopefully they will start carrying more variety's soon because they are one of the only places around with saltwater tanks! read more

Very disappointed in the reviews people are giving on such a wonderful place. We come here weekly for crickets for our frog and there are never fleas or roaches, and it smells like a typical pet store not bath and body works. The owner as well as the employees are all very knowledgeable and if they aren't sure about what you are asking they will find another employee who is working to help you. They have a great selection of dog and cat food. I was surprised to see they carried Victor-dog food that is made locally and from meat-you won't find this at petsmart. I adopted a gorgeous adult pit bull in the parking lot and stopped in here to buy her dog food, a bed and some treats. This place is absolutely filthy. The dog crate bed my husband grabbed had fleas on it! The dog bones were crawling with roaches. There were roaches and fleas everywhere. We did end up buying the dog food because Petco did not carry it and we didn't want to change her food abruptly. The employee that was there was definitely kind and very helpful but I was very disturbed at the number of small animals crammed into that tiny space and could not ignore the smell and filth everywhere around me. I did try to give animal arc a few other chances but I just can't buy my dog's food from an infested shop. I would literally walk through the front door and the first thing I would see was roaches crawling on the dog treats. I see that there are positive reviews on this place but I can't imagine how people can ignore the filth. First we were told that they had two female kittens for us ready to go after a few rounds of shots. Showed up to pick them up and they said "oh just kidding, they're both males" I feel like that's something you might note in your documents about the cats. They were instead being treated for a communal stomach bug that they all got. It would be another three days for them to go. So we asked if we could swap the cats we paid for, for two adoptable females. When she checked the two females we wanted they was ready to get them out when someone else said "oh no, I didn't do any cat paper work because I wanted to get out of here, it'll be another 3 or 5 days because I don't work until next week" Too many ups and downs and people not having their shit together or caring about their work for this place to be okay with me. I'm scared for the other adoptable animals there, if someone goes through the same things my family and I went through (ending in the refund of our payment) and no one gets adopted or they don't have all the shots they say they do, or the paperwork is messed up. Just a very poorly run facility. Either new management needs to step in or all the animals should be sent elsewhere. Somewhere with a better system. read more

I have been going to Animal Ark for about 5 years now for food for my animals. Thought they were a pretty good store until last week I called them and asked if they had any large rats and the girl on the phone said yes she has 5 or 6 live large rats. So I asked her if she had 3 females and she said yes, so I drove all the way there which is a 35 minute drive for me to get them and I asked the guy there to get me 3 female large rats and 1 male and he told me we don't do that here. We're not going to go through them and sex them, are you kidding me? First of all they only had six to begin with and I already knew 3 of them were females. So then I went to the guy who runs the place, Kevin and told him that his employee would not sale me 3 females and 1 male large rats and he said yea we won't do that, we don't set people up for breeding! That really mad me angry. As much as I go to this place to buy food and supplies and they won't sell me large rats now? So then he said oh all the females are going to a breeding project but you can buy the male from us, I said no thanks and I won't be back here. They just lost a customer of 5 years over something stupid. So from now on I will stick to Pets A Plenty in Hockley. I have been buying from Eric who is the owner for about 8 years now and they are the best. Little bit further drive but we'll worth it. Love that store. The best reptile store around here! read more

I bought a snake from Animal Ark on November 5th 2019. On my way home the snake got out in my car. The retailer had failed to tie the bag tightly. I went back over there immediately and we searched for the snake for an hour. He told me I had to wait it out and to keep him posted. I did that and I told him my main concern was the snake dying in my car. I was worried about the cold weather. He said it wouldn't die and that it would come out eventually. Well needles to say it died in my car. The snake didn't even survive 2 weeks. I called to try and get my money back and the owner of the company had the gall to say I let the snake out on purpose. I was absolutely flabbergasted. I think the owner forgot to take his psyche meds that day. What person in there right mind would let a snake loose in their car. The owner is obviously off his rocker or he just doesn't want to take responsibility for what was a total incompetent act on their part. Who forgets to tie a knot in a snake bag. It was my first snake. I was excited. I never once thought to check the bag. I trusted him. That was a big mistake on my part. I'm putting this review out there just to let people be aware if you buy a snake from there make sure the bag is tied tightly because if it's a ball python it will get out if there's even a slight little whole they can get through. It's better to just put it in a critter tote if you have one. Honestly I don't know why anyone would ever want to do business with an owner who runs his company this way. This guy doesn't know me.
