I had a great dinner on this April evening with my family. There was an initial long wait, but I understand that this wasn't the restaurant's fault and was glad to see this local business booming and busy serving the community. We ordered the macaroni and cheese and were surprised by the overwhelming queso sauce and lack of bacon. The hibiscus kiss was delicious, and I would recommend it. I also had a vodka soda that was strong and fizzy. The chicken fried steak was uniquely presented and served with perfectly blanched and al dente vegetables. We also ordered the cheddar burger and thought it was simple and straight forward would've liked to be offered condiments for the plain and dry burger. Stopped in on the way through to Big Bend - Tuesday 7:30 pm, July 25th. Vibe is mature but fun. The Phoenix Tree is really unique and the bar set up is kooool. Seated within 10 minutes. The drink menu is very thorough: lots of bourbons and beer and wine. Although the wines are CA and out of country brands. I'm more of a TX wine guy. Food came within 15 minutes. We were strolling along the San Angelo River Walk and decided it was time to eat. I looked up Yelp Reviews and this place stood out. When we walked in, there was a slight smoky aroma that reminded me of good BBQ. We were seated quickly and our waitress was prompt in getting us water and warm bread to dip in olive oil with herbs and crumbled Parmesan. We ordered house beers - The IPA and Mexican Lager. For an appetizer we had bacon wrapped quail bites filled with fresh Jalapeño peppers. There were a couple Sweet Potato Tops topped with crispy Red Tortilla Strips and slightly Sweet Sautéed Onions. The entire plate had a BBQ Sauce drizzle to compliment the heat and savoriness of the dish. I ordered the Catfish and fries - perfectly seasoned cornmeal and the fish was flaky and moist. It came with seasoned fries and a spicy relish sauce for the fish. I didn't even touch the ketchup. He had the 3 Texas Tacos plate with Beans and Rice He chose the beef, suggested by our waitress, and was very pleased. The beans were whole pinto beans and had some of the most savory, complex, and rich flavors either one of us had ever tasted. We were sat at a table during a busy day we only had to wait about 10 minutes. Second visit was this past weekend (Friday night) with my girlfriend and it was pretty busy but only a 15 minute wait. We found some spots at the bar so we opted out of the wait. As soon as we sat down we were asked what we wanted to drink and if we wanted appetizers or if we were ready to eat. We never had to wait on anything or flag down a bartender for a drink. I had the west Texas tacos and my girlfriend had the chicken fried chicken. We were both extremely happy and impressed with the food and the appetizer which was the skillet queso. We had a few drinks and our glasses were never empty and once we got the final bill it was extremely fair for the amount of food an alcohol we consumed. Tangy and smokey are the two adjectives I would use to describe the menu--the essence of Texas flavors imo. The meats are tender and soft while the barbecue sauce adds a bit of a sweet tang. Once paired with a few spices, the dish is elevated with a bit of a kick. The menu is quite extensive but I think a guaranteed good bite would be the lamb chops. It was so soft and tasted richly without it being too gamey. Perfectly tender and juicy. The limey poblano chili & Demi on the side was paired perfectly, adding a unique flavor. Tonight my friends got the margaritas since I don't drink and they said they were the best margaritas they had in a very long time. We came to San Angelo to avoid Hurricane Beryl on the Gulf Coast. We've seen the local sites and eaten at a few local restaurants. We got into Angry Cactus about 2:30, just in time for the lunch portions. The Chicken Fried steak was delicious and just the right size and the Skillet Nachos did not disappoint. I've had really great food & experiences here, however, the last trip was mediocre. The salmon dish I had was overdone, it was advertised as over a bed if sweet potato "hash" but they used tater tots. We've had the meatloaf dish previously& it was amazing. The last time, not so much, overdone & under-plated. The service was just okay, had a hard time getting the bartender to pay attention while on his phone, so that was an additional drag. Great food on an awesome outdoor patio, what more could you want? I came here with a friend on Saturday and we had a lovely lunch on their patio. I am sure it gets crowded in the evenings but we had it all to ourselves most of our meal. I ordered the catfish and chips because it sounded good. I was shocked how delicious it was being that West Texas is not known for good fried fish. The fish was breaded perfectly in a cornmeal mixture and fried just right. The fries that came with is were crispy and paired well with the sauce the provided. I paired my meal with their IPA beer. I am not sure if they brew it themselves or not but it was a solid IPA. The rest of the menu looked great with options to please anyone and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. read more

While it seems to be a popular place, what was frustrating was that we explained to the waiter from point A- my allergies including black pepper. Everything from the nachos to the fries were covered in black pepper. It was very frustrating as I could barely eat. While the waiter apologized after....it was just frustrating.
