Polenta tots
Eman S.

Eh I don't mean to be harsh, but I don't get the hype. The service was awesome and they accomodated a half and half pizza with my friend and I basically the same pizza but meat on one side and one without. The chefs were so careful to leave an extra perimeter so that the juices wouldnt seep from the meat onto my side. But the pizza we got was limp within 5-10 minutes of receiving it. The polenta tots were intriguing and nice. Also we were walk ins on a random weekday and I was shocked that they made us sit at the bar and tried to seat us directly stacked up next to someone else sitting there. I did not and left a seat between me and the other person and the bartender didn't try to force me to sit there. My friend and I did end up having deep conversations with a random person dining alone who was seated next to my friend at the bar we were forced to sit at, eavesdropping and interrupting our conversation randomly throughout the meal. There was seating available, as most of the restaraunt at the moment was free.

My wife has been anxiously awaiting the arrival of Angie's. She kept taking about their pop up and was happy to see they made the brick and mortar jump. When I first looked they were 4+ stars, now they have dropped to 3.7 stars. At first I was surprised after my experience, but after thinking about it I get it. Parking sucks, but they do have valet (I hate valet). At least the restaurant wasn't cheap and made you pay for the valet. That intersection already had difficulty parking with Loro. Get reservations, right now it's difficult to walk in unless you get there before 4:50 and wait in line for their 5pm open. The ambience is nice. I like the retro look. The staff is attentive and nice. What we ordered: the fried olives, risotto balls, leak tortellini, and the market pizza. Everything was delicious. Apart from the pizza, everything was either over priced or under proportioned (except for the pizza because I'm sad to say an artisan pizza that size is $20-28 these days). We drank waters and before tip the bill was $73.60. Will we be back? Yes, we live walking distance and the food was great. Will we come back often? Not likely unless the pricing gets inline with the proportions.

Margherita Pizza

Neapolitan and New York styles pizza and pasta. Ordered: - Potenta Tots - Leek Tortelloni - yummy. - Margherita Pizza - I felt like this one definitely leaned a little bit more towards Neapolitan than NY. It was a little bit lighter on the sauce if you like that style. - Market Pizza - wished there was a little bit more corn flavor. For certain bites it felt like the salumi piccante overpowered the corn. - Blueberry & Cream Tiramisu - It was good. I tasted mainly the lychee and blueberry the jasmine tea was pretty light.

I expected more. This is a brand new pizza spot with a cocktail bar upstairs that is nice to chill at while you wait. The location is great, and prices here are a reflection of the area and the $$ that has been put into this place. The parking sucks. They do have valet, not sure how much though. The ambiance is cool, old retro vibe with some background music. There is a bar as well in the restaurant. It is better if you get a reservation if not, you will wait a lil. We waited about 45 min. Location and business appearance are great. Now for the service and food. The service was good. They are attentive, especially since it's new. The pizza is not what I expected. I'd skip the appetizers. The crispy potatoes are an easy pass. The fried olive, it's an olive made into a meatball with ground beef around it, fried. That wasn't great, so appetizers I'd say skip them. Now the pasta, Riccota Gnocchi, for $26, I wouldn't pay it always, but it for sure was the better food I tried. The pizza was ok. We got the Picante. It was ok. It's not crispy if you expect that. It's ok though. It's a new place I wanted to try in the area, but I wouldn't come here for pizza. I might try another one eventually and update. I'd recommend Ducky's Pizza Tavern or Southern Yankee Crafthouse, but I highly recommend Angie's if you like trying new places. It's right across from Loro. Total was $80 no drinks just food .

Food wasn't great, pizza crust was good but the toppings were just okay. Did not like the appetizer or the pasta and was very over priced. Sat at the bar and the bartender was super nice and quick. The vibe is good for a date night but I would go somewhere where the food is better like Rosie Cannonball

Loved this pizza! We sat at the bar and our bartender was awesome. It has an old school diner feel. Would definitely go again!

Fantastic Gnocchi Dish !!!

I finally got a chance to get here this past Tuesday night. I ordered the Margherita Pizza and Ragu Gnocchi. Both were really delicious, made with great care and very flavorful. The food tasted like it could belong in a really good private cafe up North like NY, etc. The pizza crust was charred very nicely with a slightly crispy, chewy texture like toasty pita bread. It was a Neapolitan style, which a lot of Margherita pizzas are. Very good and even in NYC, good Margherita pizza that stands out is certainly harder to attain than a good NY slice there. The sauce had a zing to it, tomatoey, salted right and not too sweet or too sour. The cheese was very good quality and had a thick, milky vibe to it almost like buffalo mozzarella or something. The gnocchi entree was pasta perfection. The gnocchi were clearly made in house like the pizza in its own way. Each piece was very soft and had a subtle, but noticeably good taste to them. A bit buttery n sweet in a way. The ground sausage gravy was rich, savory, a little spicy, oily, a bit creamy and so well-seasoned. It also paired so well with the gnocchi too. Similar to Bolognese. The best gnocchi dish I ever had personally and highly recommended for anyone up North visiting town looking for some great Italian food. The service from everyone I came across walking in at the door, servers, lady who brought my drink, guys working behind the bar counter near the pizza oven were all so welcoming, hospitable, friendly and helpful for any questions. Valet guys were very welcoming and polite as well. I will be back when I can to try their pesto pizza, pasta options and a dessert if I have room next time.

We've been curious about this Heights spot for a while and finally popped in! Without reservations, we were sent to the upstairs bar to wait for a table - and it was a vibe. Moody lighting, dark wood, and a speakeasy-like charm set the tone, and the drink menu, with its illustrated cocktails, was a fun surprise. Just as one drink arrived, our table was ready, but Texas liquor laws wouldn't let us bring it downstairs. Oh, Texas... No biggie--my boyfriend paid, and we headed to our seats. Downstairs felt casual yet fun, like "Diner x Fancy Fun." We ordered wine and, on a fellow diner's recommendation, tried the carrots and margherita pizza --both were fantastic! The attentive bar service and easy conversation made the experience even better. A highlight was meeting Chef Angelo, who told us about their custom-made pizza oven. Even better, the chef personally wanted to take care of the upstairs drink tab and said he'd make it right--such a thoughtful and refreshing gesture. We love that this place is in the neighborhood, and we'll definitely be back for more, upstairs and downstairs!

SO excited about the opening of this restaurant. Was checking their instagram daily and was able to get on the waitlist for dinner on their second night of service. We had drinks upstairs at Bar Angie while waiting for a table. The restaurant has great vibes and the service was really exceptional. For dinner we ordered a bunch of things to share. We didn't really enjoy the carrots or the crudo (which was presented more like a ceviche) but we LOVED the crostino. For our mains we ordered the agnolotti, bucatini, piccante pizza and fresca pizza. The agnolotti was good but the bucatini, piccante and fresca pizzas were dynamite. The bucatini was perfectly al dente and sauce was light and fresh. Pizzas were chewy and crisp and I must seriously recommend that you order the homemade dill ranch for dipping. Very excited to come back and try everything else on the menu! P.S. The desserts were VERY good as well.

The pizza was amazing! I sat at the bar and had a wonderful bartener and great ambiance!

Piccante pizza

Ambiance is good, it's well decorated and is definitely an aesthetic. The service my first time was great and they coursed our meal well and were attentive. The second time I went, they brought out our dinner before the appetizer. Not a big deal, and maybe I shouldn't have ordered everything at once but it was just kinda odd. The gnocchi is definitely better than the pizza. The pizza is good and is definitely some of the better pizza I've had in the city, I think it's just missing a little umph. I'm not sure if I'll be back on my own whim, there's other spots I enjoy more. Or maybe my expectations were too high because of everything I've seen online and the publicity it's gotten. It's definitely worth going and checking out! I feel like everyone has different preferences on pizza, who knows, maybe it's what you prefer!

Outdoor entrance

Deazia our waitress had amazing hospitality and made our dinner extra special. We got the crispy potatoes for starters and the best crunch ever and seasoning was really good. We shared the margherita and piccante pizza. Delicious!! My favorite dish was the ricotta gnocchi really creamy and has a delicious spice to it.

Bar Buena was a surprise find after we participated in a cooking class at Sur La Table across the…read morestreet. After the byob cooking experience, we figured "why not!?" So we walked on over to this little speakeasy and were immediately greeted by the bouncer. On a Thursday night, it was quite crowded, but were able to find the last remaining seats at the bar. We were seated at the left end of the bar, which was nice because we had our own little "nook" away from the rest of the bar. Adjacent to us was the server station - the one server tending to the tables, Marilyn, frequently came by and we immediately befriended her. She gave us excellent recommendations and provided her opinion on several drinks. Robin was the bartender who took care of us throughout the night. She was super friendly from the moment we sat down and gave us stellar recommendations on food and drinks. She was happy to tweak a couple of their seasonal drinks to our liking, and even offered to mix other drinks that weren't on the menu. Fantastic service from Robin throughout the night. I started out with Tommy's Margarita - this was just their take on a classic margarita, nothing super special. I then ordered the Oaxacan Old Fashioned - think of an old fashioned made with tequila and mezcal in lieu of bourbon. I was a bit cautious about this one since I am not a fan of mezcal, however the smoky flavor was not very apparent in this one, which was a huge plus! I also got the Ardilla - very unique drink made with mexican corn whiskey, cocoa nibs, sherry, and a milk punch. I award this drink for most unique I've had in a while, definitely give it a try if you're up for something new. To finish, I had the Cariña - their take on an espresso martini made with reposado tequila. I really liked this espresso martini - it was a great way to finish out the night and I left feeling inspired to make my espresso martinis at home using tequila now! With the little room we had left in our stomachs, we tried the Pato Tinga Memela, which was duck leg (no bone) with beans and onions and cilantro atop a memela. I haven't had memela specifically per se, but consider me a fan. It is basically a mini "cake" of masa that is pan fried to a slight crispiness. An Oaxacan speciality, where else can I find these in Houston!? We also tried the Guacamole y Tostadas. The guacamole was unique in the sense that it was Oaxacan style, so contains pepitas, pickled onions, and queso fresco. The tostadas were super crispy and reminded me of how they serve guacamole in Mexico (rather than with chips/totopos). Fun fact is that this bar is owned by Goode Company. Next door to this is Goode Co. Cantina, so it's nice that they created an adjoining restaurant + speakeasy concept within the same strip. At one point in our visit, Levi Goode was standing next to us. We didn't know until after he left and Marilyn informed us, that that was THE man. Just doing a casual check-in of his bar. We really had a good experience at Bar Buena and look forward to returning. The food menu has quite a few offerings I wanted to try had I not come from a cooking class. We were also told that the seasonal drink menu was set to change shortly after our visit, so I look forward to trying these drinks!

Our server, Camille, took our order and then would disappear for 30+ minutes at a time. At one point, when we asked where she had been, she simply said she was "walking around." Her overall approach to serving us felt extremely nonchalant and inattentive. The atmosphere also made us feel as though the level of attention you receive depends on how much you're spending--particularly whether you're purchasing bottles. The servers seemed more focused on creating a bottle-service experience than providing attentive restaurant service. It gave the evening a very transactional, "pay for attention" feeling rather than genuine hospitality. What really sealed the experience for us happened after we had already paid our bill. A host approached our table and essentially said, "Can you leave now? We need to seat someone right now." There was no gracious transition, no "thank you for dining with us," and no polite explanation--just an abrupt request to leave. For a restaurant with such a beautiful ambiance and good food, the service and hospitality were incredibly disappointing. Guests should feel welcomed and valued from the moment they sit down until the moment they leave, regardless of whether they're ordering bottles.

Even this time the GPS took us to an entrance that had us going the wrong way down a one-way, but we eventually figured it out I will say that the parking isn't all that great, but we were able to find a spot. If the parking lot is full you should be able to find street parking nearby Kanpai Club is a sister location to Handos. They share a kitchen and you can walk through an inside door access either. You can find the same cocktails and bites from Handos on the Kanpai menu, but there's also additional drinks and bites The bar feels like a Japanese Izakaya. It's a narrow space resembling a Japanese outdoor bar. It's intimately lit and well decorated. We did have to wait for two spots to open up, but that didn't take too long The bartenders were friendly, professional, and efficient. We went on a Friday night (fairly late), and they had two dedicated bartenders The cocktails were fun and were beautifully crafted. Most were served in novelty glassware. You can order classic cocktails, but both Kanpai and Hando offer a variety of signature cocktails. Most having some sort of Japanese or Asian fusion. They have beer, wine, and extensive sake list, as well as green tea and other nonalcoholic options The cocktails were tasty. The only one I was iffy on was their Espresso martini. It was poured from a machine and I guess there were having issues with it. The presentation was phenomenal. There was a roasted marshmallow garnish. The drink itself was far too Smokey in flavor than I like, or at least in terms of my espresso martinis The Yuzu Kosho fries were incredible. The flavors really hit the spot. The Okinawa Potato salad was both questionable to looks and and to eat lol. This purple mound of potato's had an interesting taste, look, and consistency. It wasn't bad, just... interesting and new Some tips: If you can't find this spot from the street, look for Handos. It's part of this restaurant Ask the bartender about the happy hour menu. And most nights they're open until 12am, but on Fridays and Saturdays they are open until 2am If you order food online (technically from Hando's) you can get 10% off using code: HANDO10. This is part of their "Hando and Chill" special Cheers!!
