We stopped here for some drinks and apps during a work conference. We were trying to work with a reservation one of us has made but we arrived a little earlier and tried to let the hostess know that we were the same group. She was on the phone with the other member of our party and we told her that we were the same group. She was incredibly rude and said something to the effect of "let me deal with this first before I lose my mind". It really put a sour taste in our mouths. Especially because we were trying to help and make it easier for her. Then we got a table and there were plenty of tables, so it was not clear why she was so worked up. We ordered margs as well as queso and salsa. The margs were good and our server was okay. The queso was kind of weird. Very thick and a strange flavor. The salsa was good. Overall we looked at the menu and agreed it wasn't for us, plus the hostess' attitude, so we left after that. Bit of a bummer. read more

We saw tableside guac on the menu and immediately said YES. We got some margaritas to start - mine the spicy mango marg with tajin rim and my husband got just the regular margarita. Tableside guac of course for our app and someone came to our table to mix it all up for us. We shared the birria tacos (comes with 3) and added a side of rice and beans. Came here for a quick lunch and would like to say my partner and I from LA and San Diego so honestly we weren't expecting much when it came to Mexican in banff, but we were proven wrong! It was super delicious and honestly exceeded our expectations. The wait staff was so friendly in helping us decide what to get and service was super quick! I think we waited maybe 10 minutes haha. Their happy hour drinks had a decent selection; I got a margarita, and my boyfriend stuck with a classic Modelo. I really did not like this place. The service was fantastic but the food was not good. We got the queso fundido as an app and it was bad. It has no flavor and was expensive. I ordered a shrimp taco and a birria taco. The birria was not good, tasted like nothing. But the shrimp taco had some promise. Also had the rice and beans - STAY AWAY. We were craving Mexican food while visiting Banff and that's how our story with Anejo started. Thankfully didn't have to wait for a table and were able to snag a nice U shaped booth. Our server greeted us immediately and was super kind, friendly, and elevated our experience. She gave us some helpful tips for the menu and also some perspective on Banff as a local. To start, we ordered the tortilla soup. Let it be known, it was the best tortilla soup I have ever had; so good, so spicy, so tasty. First I'll throw out that our whole party is from Southern California and knows what Mexican food should taste like, how it should be prepared, etc. This restaurant will prepare you a killer traditional Oaxacan style meal with a little bit of spice. Start with the table side guacamole and make sure you add the jalapeños. Then grab yourself some coconut shrimp apps, followed by any of the tacos or the camarones plate. Bright and busy Mexican place right on Banff Avenue in Banff. Seating is comfortable and tables are not too close together. Menu has traditional Mexican tacos, among many other delicious dishes. Something for everyone on the menu. Our tacos were served hot and delicious and we enjoyed the salsa tasting for an appetizer which was also excellent. Drinks menu is impressive with lots of tequila choices as well as beers, wines and cocktails. Good non alcohol drinks too. Service is friendly and attentive. "Authentic" Mexican food in name only, and in the repetitive harping of its (granted, friendly) servers. If you have *any* standards for Mexican food, do not waste your money here. The tequila menu is extensive but expensive, and my double marg tasted like juice. My companion ordered one of each taco and found the meat alright, but the tacos were utterly lacking of any sauce. The fish taco was literally fried fish, onion, and some cilantro. What? I had the vegetarian tacos, some with friend cauliflower and some with mushroom. While the mushroom was seasoned well, there was not a drop of authenticity in either taco and frankly the flavors were lacking. This restaurant seems to think Mexican food can be distilled into a corn taco shell, some onion, and spicy mayo (??). The ambiance of the restaurant is warm and welcoming, but also dark and very loud, which I found a little overwhelming. The decor wasn't sinfully inaccurate, but felt as though the owner had gone to a United States Dollar Store on Dia de los Metros and just bought anything that gave "Mexican vibes." Also, brightly painted deer skulls, because why not? Ultimately, a deeply disappointing experience that felt entirely catered by people who had never stepped foot in Mexico, let alone a Mexican restaurant, who seemed to think spicy and well-spiced mean the same. I can imagine how tourists who also haven't visited Central America may enjoy this place (and its aesthetic taco presentation) but as someone with taste for true Mexican food, I regret stepping through the door. read more

This is an EXCELLENT Mexican restaurant. We ordered tableside guacamole and tableside salsa. If you specify you're gluten free, they will bring gluten free chips to the table. Both the guacamole and salsa were very fresh. Please note this is not going to be a typical salsa and it's very chunky. We all ordered the quesabirria tacos on corn tortillas (gluten free). I ordered mine without cheese to be dairy free. The consume dipping juice was AMAZZZINNG. I literally could've drank it. It was so flavorful and delicious. My husband ordered the rice as a side but I didn't care for it. They have an awesome menu and SO MANY gluten free options. Our friend who isn't gluten free also loved it. Bad experience. We came with two families with little kids. We asked for patio table and they said it wasn't available, we sat inside and felt music was too loud for 2 years old kids. Patio table got opened then, few seconds ago and there were no one waiting, we requested to be seated at the patio table. They said they weren't enough servers, but soon after another family came and they took them right to the table. This was unfair and isn't acceptable especially with families who come with kids, I would rather expect a better hospitality than being tough and less flexible. We walked out as kids weren't comfortable with loud music! I wouldn't recommend for people coming with families! No kids menu! read more

It was colder relative to the dining rooms. What's the best happy hour in Banff? "Anejo!" Let me start by just saying we visited this gem three times during our week in Banff. We stumbled upon this spot per the recommendation of a local shop owner. The drink selection was fantastic. There were 10-12 different flavors of margaritas with some seasonal options. We tried about half of them and they were all great. Highly recommend the guava. The tacos and nachos also didn't disappoint but the margaritas were the highlight! And the prices were unbeatable. My favorite server Luke was super friendly; he gave us recommendations for other spots in Banff. The mix of booth seating with fun art and sculptures was eclectic done perfectly.
