When I moved to North County after 40 years in Palo Alto, I had a lot of work to do in finding new vendors for critical things. Find doctors and dentists. Locate urgent care facilities and hospitals. Figure out which grocery store was going to be my go-to. Find restaurants and car washes. You know the drill. I wear very complex eyeglasses. They have every kind of correction possible. Warby Parker won't even attempt them. A well-known chain of supposedly "discount" eyeglasses never succeeded in making them correctly, even after several attempts. Back in Palo Alto, I had stuck with the one optician I had found who was able to make my glasses well enough to please my doctors and me. There may have been others up there who could do it, but I didn't want to spend my life experimenting. I stuck with what worked. So when I developed an urgent need for a new pair of glasses, I thought about driving the 500 miles back to Palo Alto to have Robert make them for me, but I thought "No, North County is a very civilized place. There will be at least one optician here who can make your glasses right. You just have to find them." The first three places I tried did not measure up. Either bad customer service or bad workmanship. I use the glasses they made for me as emergency spares--one in my suitcase when I travel, another in the glove compartment of my car. But on the fourth try, I found Andrews Optical. They got it right. I decided to splurge and have them make me some sunglasses. Check. Then my wife, seeing my happiness with Andrews, had two pairs made, and is delighted with both of them. She cares much more about fashion than I do, and she is thrilled at the quality and diversity of the frames they have available. I like frames that don't break and don't fall of my nose. She likes frames that are beautiful. My wife will be having cataract surgery in a couple of months. She will of course need new glasses after that. Just wanted to give Andrews optical a huge shout out. The people here were so kind to my today. I had gone to a glasses repair shop down the street and the man was cold and told me he couldn't help me at all. By chance I stumbled on this spot while walking back to my car. My mother, who is in the hospital, had broken the arm of her glasses and needed a fix until she could get new ones. Andrews stepped up immediately and helped me get these babies fixed right away. I wear both contacts and glasses. I used my insurance benefits for my contacts since I wear them every day; but also wanted an updated pair of glasses that had a better style. While I really like my opthalmologist, his office doesn't have a great supply of frames, so when I heard about Andrews, I thought I'd check them out. When you walk in, you almost become claustrophobic because the shop is WALL to WALL frames. I'm not talking last year's going out of season frames, but current frames that are in colors and styles that are almost overwhelming. Thankfully, Diane and her team know how to help you make that critical decision; but with their prices (and coupons found in the Community Guide), hey why not get more than one pair? I made my selection, thanks to the help of Sandra, and chose a great Tory Burch pair that really complemented my face, coloring and style! Great selection of glasses and outstanding customer service. Bought a new pair of prescription Maui Jim sunglasses and had new prescription lenses placed in my old ray ban frames and old Maui Jim's. First set of lenses with a new prescription made me dizzy and nauseous. Got the prescription fixed and had Andrews Optical make a new set of sunglasses and regular glasses. Second set was perfect. When I first purchased my glasses the optician did not measure correctly and I have progressive bifocals. So I have to tip my head up to see right in front of me. The owner refused to send them back and have them redone even though I know these people get one redo for free. The frames they sold me began flaking almost immediately.Then when the screw broke the owner was so cold and unhelpful I will never go back to this place. read more

Don't go to Andrews Optical, terrible service. I had a problem with an expensive pair of Persol's that I bought from them and was told that they would replace them. They admitted they were defective and told me it would not be a problem. I followed up 3 times and they kept stringing me along, telling me they had to submit something to the manufacturer. This is after I had spent no less than $3,000 on glasses with them, 3 pairs of Persol's, two pairs of Maui Jim's and another pair for my wife. Each pair required prescriptions so they were on average over $500 per pair and that's being conservative. Furthermore, my perscriptoin Maui Jim's are a little over a year old and the lenses are becoming cloudy, I'll have to replace them on my own dime. The last time I went in to enquire about exchanging my Perso's they were rude and acted like I was a nuisance. Sure, they are charming on first glance, that's what suckered me in, but once they have your money all bes are off! read more

Between my wife and I we have had 3 pairs of glasses made at Andrews, two of them had to be redone, and I now find that even after that, they are not accurate to the prescription. I have one pair of prescription glasses that I had 2 optometrists tell me didn't match my prescription, although that prescription was what the glasses were made as. When I went back to Andrews they claimed it was perfect. I since went to two other places that tested the glasses and everyone except Andrews is in agreement that one of the lenses is a step off. I also had a pair of reading glasses made at Andrews, and another pair at some online place. I had both of those tested by someone else, and the online pair matched the prescription they were supposed to be, the pair made by Andrews had one lens a step off. My wife gave up on her pair after Andrews was treating here like everything wrong with the glasses was her fault. Like other people hear said, they have an excellent section, but the lab work is just awful. And they don't stand behind their work. read more

Please dont go here. I tried to support the small business in my community but they ended up ripping me off. The lady sold me a pair of gunnar glasses but i couldnt adjust to the slight magnification. I went back to return them but she insist on getting me a pair without magnification. I figured, "wow, she's really going through the trouble of getting me what i want. i like this place!" When i got there for my new pair, she lied to me by telling these pairs are so much more expensive than my original and that she's doing me a favor by not charging me the difference. Diane is great. I've been going to her for years, and been though I moved to the Bay area (where there are plenty of optical boutiques), I make special trips to see her when I come back to SD. She is friendly and knowledgable, has a great in-store selection, and can special order nearly everything. She makes an effort to get things done quickly and perfectly. My aunt drives down from LA when she needs new glasses, and Diane spends as much time as needed making sure she ends up with frames that flatter her face and accommodate her thick prescription.
