I am a photographer and my previous doctor created a custom prescription to help me work and Dr. Wang stepped in and made it his own and improved on what I had. I brought my own frames to Modern Eyes Optometry to have blue light filtering and anti-reflective lenses installed -- not because I had vision issues, but as a preventive measure to reduce eye strain from long hours at the computer. Within just a few weeks of using their lenses, I began experiencing intense migraines and constant eye fatigue -- symptoms I had never experienced before. The moment I stopped wearing the glasses, the problems vanished. When I contacted the clinic to report this, their response was dismissive: "Our lenses have no issues." Instead of showing any concern or accountability, they told me to pay for an eye exam to "check my prescription" -- which makes absolutely no sense, since these were non-prescription preventive lenses. The problem isn't my eyes. The problem is what they sold me. It's not just disappointing -- it's infuriating. They deflect blame, offer no support, and immediately try to charge more money instead of solving the issue. This isn't healthcare -- it's a sales machine hiding behind a medical license. Their priority isn't patient well-being, it's profit. They are a perfect example of what's gone wrong in today's medical field: the patient is no longer a person -- just a revenue stream. Very friendly and helpful staff. Always seemed pretty busy when I was there which seemed like a good sign. They still managed to be very efficient with seeing everyone. Have not been to the eye doctor in a long time, but I was happy with the testing and check up I had done. I picked up some glasses and they were ready slightly ahead of schedule. Had my first visit today at Modern Eyes with Dr Wang and I'm so very pleased I found them. The whole staff was very friendly and accommodating from the moment I walked in. There is even a cute chalkboard at the entrance welcoming each patient for the day. The front desk staff made sure I completely understood our insurance showed me several different options. Dr Wang was very nice. He helped me find a good contact lens solution to my problem of needing distance and reading. He was very sensitive to my history or migraines as well. I called before scheduling my yearly contact exam and was told my insurance covers the entire fee. I was seen on January 30th. After finishing, I was then charged a $50 "contact lenses fitting fee". I have worn contacts for 12 years and I have never been charged that at any other office in addition to my insurance covering the entire exam fee. I picked up the amount of lenses my insurance covered and was told I owed $0. I ordered glasses on 3/20/19 somewhere else and paid for my glasses. Today I called the office to get a copy of my prescription, and was told I owe them $120 for my contacts and they will not release my prescription until I pay them. Basically, they waited to submit my claim to my insurance for TWO MONTHS and then blamed it on me as if I knew I already used my benefits when I ordered glasses TWO MONTHS LATER. I assumed they did their job and charged my insurance at the time I picked up the lenses, especially since I paid out of pocket for my glasses as well. They have a nice office and friendly staff, but the pricing and billing is shady. read more

Dr. Wong is excellent! I've seen several optometrist over the years and he's by far the most thorough and accurate. He's also very honest and told me that I didn't need new glasses for a minor change in my prescription! wow! He explains things well and takes time to explain things to you. I want to alert people to my experience at Modern Eye Optometry in Carlsbad. I was fitted for glasses and told that my insurance covered all but $321. I picked my glasses and was walking out the door whenI was asked back and told that I owed another $192 as my insurance didn't pay for certain features. If I had known from my first visit that my glasses would cost over $500 instead of the original quote of $321, I might have considered going elsewhere to get them. So be certain that the quote you get at fitting is the TOTAL that you will have to pay. read more

First visits for both family members were great a year ago. This year, AWFUL experience. I booked a "contact fitting" appointment for my daughter and specifically on two occasions mentioned our nanny would be bringing her. I wanted to make sure if any decision were needed, they knew she was empowered to make them or would call me if needed. During her appointment, there were questions and she said she could call, but the Dr. said he is short staff and couldn't help her get fitted anyway. I needed to get my eye exam done before the end of the year and I saw that Modern Eyes was a local option for an Optometrist that was covered under UHC Vision so I decided to give Modern Eyes a try. I absolutely loved this place, they have cute frames to choose from and the staff is amazing. It was a quick visit, under an hour, and the staff did a great job of explaining all my options and assisting me in getting the best available for what was covered by my insurance. I had a lot of issues with my insurance though (at the fault of the insurance company of course) and Natalie kept in touch with me the entire way and was wonderful! She was even able to help me get my glasses done quicker than expected. I always appreciate a place that has an amazing staff, and Modern Eyes provides just that! Our family has been seeing Dr. Wang for years but today I experienced next-level service. At some point in the late afternoon my vision became blurry and I realized I had a blown left pupil. To say I was terrified would be an understatement. Dr. Wang saw me immediately even though it was almost closing time and he had to pick up his child from school. After a thorough exam he recommended I go to the ER and he was concerned enough that he even offered to drive me HIMSELF. What health provider would do that?? I went to the ER and all is well as it turned out to be a drug interaction. But his kind and professional demeanor not to mention his exam went a long way to reassure me that nothing physically was wrong with the eye, that it was either neurological, pharmacological, or stress. Dr. Wang and his staff always go above and beyond but today, they wasted zero time getting me in and helping me feel whole again. I cannot recommend Modern Eyes Optometry enough. Once you are at the practice, they welcome you and take care of you right away. I'm sure they accept a wide range of insurance policies- I've had Blue Cross and Aetna in the past, both accepted. I had broken a small piece off of my glasses. I called in to see how much they would charge to fix them. They asked me to email a picture and quickly emailed me back saying they would fix them for free. As soon as I walked in I was met with smiles and an eagerness to help. One lady took my glasses in the back while the other asked about my day. A few minutes later, they handed my glasses back as good as new. Conclusion: go to Europtics in Encinitas for efficiency and no lack of communication. The very first time I had visited this optometry office I was very happy and impressed with the customer service and information that was provided. I went home that day and recommended this place to a couple of my friends and mother. Some time went by and I hadn't heard back from this place regarding the status of a product I ordered so I called. Then I called again on a separate occasion and then on my last interaction I went in and asked for a status again and was told I would get a call back on Monday. I had heard that 1-2 times before over the phone. Essentially, I think it's not right to tell the client that they will be contacted on said day, several times without actually doing it because it is misleading. It was a waste of my time. From the start I was told my glasses (just the frame to test them) would arrive in one week but it was about one month and I hadn't gotten my call back ever. I went to europtics and they even gave me the exact frame I asked for at this place PLUS with prescription in 9 days. read more

I really like this doctor' s personality and manner however the front office staff is unorganized. Billed me for copepays and additional costs I've never paid at other eye doctors and been in the same contacts for ten years. They billed me the day of service. I ordered contacts with my insurance allowance then went to go pick them up a month later and they told me I owed another $60. Then once the girl admitted the other front office staff member made a mistake they were still not willing to credit any amount. It's a bummer because my husband and son were going to make and appointment there and now they just lost 3 customers. For a new practice you take responsibility when a staff member makes a mistake. I paid $102 dollars for three months of contacts and the exam and then they billed my insurance over $300 and made scribbled, hand written convoluted breakdown of the invoice on a piece of paper that made no sense. I paid just to put an end to it after they said they would send it to collections if I didn't pay it. WOW. What a joke! I have Delta Dental PPO, which has always covered the majority of these costs and my plan hasn't changed. read more

Every time that I call they put me on hold for long periods of time and seem rather bothered that I am trying to call to schedule an appointment. I have been wearing glasses for a long time so I've been to numerous optometry places over the years. Modern Eyes is THE best. Other places just rush you through and fit you for glasses/ contacts without taking care of your eyes. Some don't even properly fit you for glasses. Dr. Wong is fantastic- he takes time to examine your eyes and ensure that everything is operating as it should and appearing as it should (within the eye). April and the other staff members are excellent as well. They bend over backwards to help you and make sure you get the most out of your insurance coverage. They have taken excellent care of my entire family and have the cutest frames also! I don't live in No County anymore, but I happily travel up the 5 for this place. Alhough almost all the staff are professional and friendly, the Optometrist was not up for a challenge with refitting my hard contact lenses. He seemed to be inexperienced with near-sighted/far-sighted fittings and just didnt want to complete what he had started. In addition, they take an unacceptable drawn out time to receive the lenses and any glasses that were ordered....With computer orders and clients willing to pay for over-night delivery, why do glasses and lenses take two weeks????..And then when you get a call to come in for your contact lense fitting, there are no appointments for another two weeks.
