I'm a gardener plain and simple. I love going to La Costa Nursery because one can wander around and look at all the plants and stuff that they have. It is a gardeners dream. The people who work there and the owners are super nice and helpful. I've had a couple of plants die and they were quick to replace them, no questions asked. I had a fantastic experience at Anderson's La Costa nursery! When I first went there everyone was super friendly and helpful. Jenna was super patient and took her time helping me select the right plants for our yard. She really listened to what I wanted and was thoughtful in selecting plants. There were several plants that I wanted that were not readily available at that time and I worked with Steven to get them ordered. He was very helpful and knowledgeable and made sure I could get the plants that I was looking for! He was very communicative throughout the process as well. Manny also assisted with this project and he was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about plants! He was a very hard worker and did an amazing job! He took his time answering all of my questions and made sure I understood how to take care of the plants too. This is an amazing nursery! I decided to take out my front lawn, so I came in looking for different plant ideas and needing some guidance. The staff at this nursery are so great. Marc Smith, one of the owners, could not have been more helpful. He spent at least an hour with me, putting different grouping of plants together, so I could see how different color schemes worked and how to best create the exact look I wanted. He was so knowledgeable, I even had him come out to my house to draw up a landscape design. He came up with different plant ideas that I would have never thought about and also picked out a really cool tree that brought the whole design together. He kept the cost down for me, so I didn't need to break the bank. All their staff was super friendly and helpful every time I walked in. I would 100% recommend this nursery to anyone having to redo their landscape or even if you just wanted a couple cool plant ideas for your yard. Great experience!!! read more

Anderson's La Costa Nursery just completed the plants for our small condo in Leucadia. Randee was the designer and the finished work exceeded our expectations. She guided and challenged us and we are thrilled with how it looks. Our condo has three different sized decks. With her help we chose beautiful blue pots. She guided us to large plants that have made a difference in the look and feel of the space. What is so fantastic is that the plants have made the decks appear to have more volume, provided a level of privacy, and made the inside of the condo connect beautifully. We love this nursery. They have a large selection of unique plants. We love just walking around this quaint nursery of gorgeous flowers. They have a cool koi pond and we were able to feed the fish. Everyone who works there has been helpful and even packed up our car for us. We will be back for more plants. It's a bit pricey, but worth it. read more

The quality of the plants seems great, but I've had better service at other places. The young woman walked me back through the greenhouse to find the tomato plants, so things started off great. Then the young man was happy to stand in the shade and recommend the best varieties of berry bushes to choose and what type of fertilizer to use. When I asked for help in selecting the plants, he gave me a cart and pointed me to where I could find them. When I checked out with my cart of berry plants, flat of heirloom tomato plants and the big houseplant I had selected ... over $180 in total ... there were 3 young people standing in the shade at the checkout stand. No one offered to help me get my plants safely across the parking lot and into the car. I'm a female senior citizen, and although I am fit enough to walk back to the car and pull a cart, it would have been nice to have some help navigating the rough gravel parking lot (some of the plants fell over) and lifting the plants into the car. Meanwhile, I saw one of the employees helping a man and his wife load their purchases into their car. What's up with that? read more

The owners and employees are super helpful and friendly, and they have a nice selection of plants. It is an enjoyable place to visit and purchase. The plants are probably a little more expensive than the big box stores or help yourself nurseries, but they select really nice specimens, and they provide a lot more than you get at the other places. They can help you plan a garden. They are able to help with finding the right plant for specific situations and needs. They can deliver and even plant for you. There are fees for those things, but they have the capability. I did have some plants delivered and one large tree planted by the nursery, and I thought the fees were reasonable. The extra helpfulness, knowledge, and quality of plants are huge pluses, and it really helps in streamlining the process and getting your yard looking good quickly. read more

I've shopped at every nursery in town, from independent local nurseries to Home Depot, and time and time again I realize how much I like Andersons. The selection is great, the staff is nice and helpful, and I always find something unique and interesting there. It's true - Home Depot might have some of the more common plants at a lower price, but that's not always true. The last time I was at Home Depot, I saw loads of $30 baskets - similar ones at Andersons were $20, including some huge, gorgeous fuschia baskets. For the few bucks you might save at other stores, this one makes up with interesting and healthy plants. I've also had nice luck ordering a few specialty plants through them. This place is amazing! I went with my 2 and 1 year old to pick out plants for our Father's Day gardening project. Marc the owner met me almost immediately, and he personally walked me through the grounds showing me how best to set up my above ground produce garden. This nursery is tucked away right off the coast, but when you are there, you feel like you are in some kind of forest wilderness. It's beautiful. I was looking for where to buy trees in the coastal area, either boxed or 15 gallon. Anderson's not only had a good selection, but the staff was very knowledgeable. A nice gentleman spent a lot of time with me to talk about the selection. He showed me photos of mature trees in a great tree book. I ended up buying a boxed Bottle Tree and arranged for their staff to deliver and plant it for me. Anderson's La Costa is my new "go to" nursery. read more

Having visited (and purchased from) Anderson's LaCosta Nursery, I have only the best things to say about this place! The plants are thoughtfully arranged, the selection is huge, and the staff was friendly, knowledgeable, helpful folks, ready to assist in any way they can. My original thoughts about the nursery, before my first visit, was that it would probably be very pricey. I happily found this not to be true. The plants were reasonably priced for the quality, in my opinion. All in all, a delightful place to spend a few hours during these beautiful California days we are having. read more

This place is a master gardener's dream as well as a beginner's academy of knowledge. The folks there are extremely helpful, very knowledgeable - on everything from shade plants to succulents. The plant selection at this place for all growing conditions is a one stop shop. They will also search out growing grounds for your special orders if they don't have what you are looking for in stock. I have never been disappointed there. . The only thing that is missing there (maybe in the secret garden or by the "decor" shed) is a coffee bar/ cart/garden to assist customers while they review their need of plants for their garden design.. I also especially like the on-line newsletter. , It is not only warm and personal with the report of the latest "wanderings" of the owners but also give very helpful reviews of their current stock on hand as well as garden tips for the month. A suggestion for the future might be to run a profile on the staff once in a while in the newsletter. Some of been there quite a while and have tremendous background, training, talent and interest! Rudest sales person ever. I asked if they had tomato plants she literally walked past me and told me to go to the secret garden I have never been there before (not going back) So I found the secret garden I found avocados, pomegranates, mango, apples and bananas but no tomatoes so I left the "secret garden" went to the front to hopefully find a more helpful sales person but oh no there she was eating a sandwich, She said did you find the tomatoes I said I found the secret garden but no tomatoes She said well I have no idea how you missed them we have so many ... Then she says well I am in a big hurry but I can walk back there with you if I must.... you really could nit find them? I told her I was done and went to Armstrong where a very nice person showed me where the tomatoes were. Apparently they do not want new customers read more

This review is for the design service in particular. While browsing the nursery one day, a salesperson informed me of the design service they offer, including telling me that it was only $250 and "worst case you get $125 of it as a credit for plants". So I decided to go for it. What I got for $250 was a cartoon doodle with no placement instructions, soil amendment instructions, or planter bed cutout shapes/sizes that you would expect with a "professional" design. Even the staff member I worked with seemed to agree it was an amateur product. Fine, whatever, that is what I get for $250, so I just wrote it off and figured at least I could get some plants and feel a bit better about it right? Nope, when I came back the owner politely informed me that the $125 credit was only if you signed on for purchase and install of the ENTIRE design, which in my case was over $10K worth of plants. AND you must do it within 30 days of the design. Does anyone really pay these prices for the plants? I'm not talking in comparison to Home Depot either, the prices here are at least 2-3x what a high quality wholesaler in town would charge for the same quality plants. Upon further complaint the owner, again politely, passed the buck saying that he had already paid the designer her fee and she had since moved to a new job, so any credit he'd give me would be at a loss to him. I understand his concern, but as a business owner that is called being accountable for your business and products right? So I guess they consider the design service not part of the nursery, so buyer beware. Aside from the astronomical prices and poor design service product, the staff are actually very friendly and knowledgeable, so I really want to give a second star for the staff but just can't bring myself to do it after my poor experience. read more

I've shopped at Anderson's more than a handful of times. Although their selection is usually of a nice quality, there's not always the quantity I need. The ladies who work there are helpful and I'd much rather support a small local business than putting my $$ in the hands of the big box store nurseries anyday! read more

I've been frequenting Andersons for the last 6 years and have always been promptly helped by a friendly and knowledgeable staff gardener that is sincerely vested in my plant needs. Over the years I've gone to them for help with my vegetable garden, my indoor plants, a few outdoor trees, consulted with them on bug issues, plant foods, etc. and have always been very pleased with their selection and advice. My most recent experience was specific to two matching indoor plants that we've had in our home for about 5 years. Recently one of them was looking unhealthy so I called Andersons and described the situation to Steven. After a while he suggested that I send him photos of the two plants so that he could delve into the problem more thoroughly. We had a number of email exchanges - all of which were prompt and productive and within weeks I'm now back to two healthy plants. I feel that Andersons is one of those special places that represents what our great community is about - helpful, friendly people looking out for each other and enjoying the place we live.
