Ghee Podi Onion Dosa
Alex M.

Sampled and enjoyed samosa chaat, fried paneer, and one of the many dosas served by this new casual Indian spot. Visited on one of the coldest days of the year and the small dining room was warm and cozy, soccer on one screen and Bollywood movie on another. The restaurant is actually 2 under one roof, the other a cheesesteak place, so carnivores can join you as you eat your vegetarian dishes. Looking forward to returning and trying other items. They have a thali that looked good for $16.

Mysore Masala Dosa (with Potato) and Paneer Dosa

Came here with three friends and wow -- I haven't had South Indian food since I was a kid, but this tasted just like home cooking. Everything was delicious! My favorites were the pani puri, the aloo paratha, and the dosa with potatoes inside -- so crispy and perfect. The potatoes were flavorful and slightly spicy --a perfect complement to the light and crispy dosa. I also loved how part of the kitchen is open so you can actually see the chef making your plates. It's super clean. It's really convenient being inside the Bites Food Court too. I tried some of my friend's mango smoothie from the smoothie spot (so good!) and grabbed Charley's Cheesesteaks on the way out to bring lunch home for my husband -- he approved! Definitely coming back.

Flight of Uttapam (Plain) with Sambar & Chutney

In the former Woodlands space, this place keeps the excellent dosas alive! Strong, hot masala chai and pillowy soft uttapatam rounded out a fantastic meal made by Francis and served by friendly Velma.

Oh, boy... I am one happy lady... because I just discovered a South Indian vegetarian food counter (with a dining area) right downstairs from my tailor in Langley Park (next door to Takoma Park, Maryland). It's called Ananda Bites (Ananda meaning "bliss"), and bliss is exactly what I'm feeling right now: I haven't seen dishes like Ghee Podi Idli and Panir Pakora (pictured) since I was traveling through India in 1985!! There's an 8-item Chaat menu; the pillowy steamed rice rounds called Idli; the savory semolina pancakes called Uttapam; the thin, crispy lentil crepes called Dosa; plus Rotis, Parathas, Samosas, and a whole menu of wonderful Indian beverages including Masala Coffee and Rosewater drink. Based on how delicious my Idli & Sambar were today, I can't wait to work my way through the entire menu! The space is shared by Charley's Cheesesteaks (which seems to be run by Central Americans), but Ananda's food is cooked in a separate vegetarian kitchen, in back of where the meat dishes are cooked. Order at the counter and take your food home, or dine in the cafe space while taking in a Bollywood film. Independent restaurants, like indie bands, are a labor of love, and require our support in order to survive... so I hope you'll give Ananda a try. (Just a caveat: The strip mall that it's located in does sometimes have day laborers hanging out in front of the shops... but so far, no one has bothered me).

Paneer dosa, Mysore masala dosa

We ordered mysore and paneer dosa, both were freshly made and great tasting. The chef stopped by to take feedback and genuinely cared, which was great to see ! The place seems to be new, we will strongly recommend everyone to try and support a small business !

Waitstaff was professional and helpful. We first ordered drinks, then starters. We ordered entrées after drinks and starters arrived for good pacing. Several of us shared a Skyfall Cabernet Sauvignon. It was smooth and fruity. We shared pimento cheese dip with veggies and bread triangles, bread basket, burrata and spiced cauliflower. All were excellent, Star was the burrata, so creamy and had pesto with it. My entree was a prosciutto sandwich with fig spread. The sandwich was on ciabatta bread. It held the sweet fig spread, savory prosciutto and soft Brie . Very filling and yummy, and came with crisp fries. Everyone loved their food. Some had dessert and coffee afterwards which was also top notch.

The standout of the day for me was the old fashioned, made with plum bitters. One of the best old fashioneds I've ever had. The servers were all very friendly and quick. We will definitely come back the next time we're in town, and definitely recommend this to others.

The ambiance is great - the interior decor is kind of upscale restaurant mixed with a rustic-Italian vibe, while somehow still feeling casual. The outdoor seating is great too with space heaters and ample seating. Service was kind of spotty, but it was also very busy at the time. The entrees and drinks were where it shined for me. Everything was really tasty with a unique blend of flavors. Dishes tended to be in the upper $20+ range, so I wouldn't classify things as cheap, but it felt worth the price for what I was getting. They also have a Happy Hour menu and special menus that seem to rotate (there was a 3-course tasting menu at the time I was there). Very cool spot and will likely be back again.

We were going to an outside event, but because the rain and cold we decided to go ahead and try this spot out. And it did not disappoint at all! We did not have a reservation so when we walked in it was packed we were a little worried. But nope we were able to get a table because someone who made reservations didn't come so we were able to slide right on in. We started out with a couple of drinks I believe it was a 1123 punch. It was alright but the drinks I got later made up for that drink not hitting. My boo he ordered the waygu egg rolls and they were fire ok! We also ordered the fried chicken fried deviled and they were so good. Never thought I would like fried deviled eggs. For our entree he ordered the jerk chicken meal and I got the crab risotto, scallops, and spicy broccolini. When I tell you my scallops were so tender and the risotto was so damn cheesy! Lord have mercy! Now to the drinks...so we tried a Hennessy drink can't remember the name was STRONG then my last drink was a nice fruity drink which hit as well. The inside of the restaurant is very much given upscale date night and nice vibes and the DJ was playing those tracks! The only reason I didn't give them 5-stars is the price. They automatically add 20% gratuity and the prices for the food were a little high. But other than those I would love to come back and maybe just sit at the bar during the week day just to see how the vibes are during the week versus the weekend vibes. And how could I forget the complimentary champagne...not a full glass though...lol

It was awesome to see the diversity of the diaspora from the African continent (East and West Africa) the Caribbean/Latin America, and America all in one safe space enjoying themselves without the performative and obnoxiousness from others I would give them that. The Billy Holliday mural and the interior design has a nice sleek, New American vibe. My problem is the service, the cost, and the food although solid, I cooked a brunch the following day myself not to brag (scrambled eggs and cheese, friend potatoes with diced green peppers and onions) that was masterful in comparison to the gingerbread style big ole French toast and fancy "scrambled eggs and cheese" this spot has. The service charge was ridiculous as my mom's bill was 70 plus bucks for just the seafood shrimp and grits which was nice, a very sweet pre-diabetic lemonade, and bread pudding that was like bougie Georgetown prices with the dominant culture. I paid 40 dollars (Hairstylist from Baby Boy!) for French toast, scrambled eggs with cheese and lemonade. The food is nice and all but nothing to die for. We came for the vibe, culture, and atmosphere also, but we do prefer the chains of Dennys and I-hop if I am not doing the cooking which is most of the time. The server would dirty mack and take a while flirting with women at the bar and playing around with staff, and I had to give a clinical gaze with my glasses and hand signal for him to return. We did ask up front about service charge and gratuity included from the beginning but they have a very Southern slow pace here that I agree with others and I am a very patient man and notice that. It can take a while to get your checks, get change, just other tasks that you would think would be handled more efficiently. The place attracts the social media crowd, with professional pictures, the glitz, the glamor the Hollywood red carpet of the DMV, but the structural integrity of the pricing, service, and experience needs to step its game up in the worst way. We certainly see this place being a bit turned up and precarious in later hours. The closest parking that is reliable enough is the Safeway garage so it is not the most convenient, where as at least Matchbox has the Wayne and Colesville garages to park at and then enter. It was nice to support the Black owned establishment but it is a 1 and done spot. Majic 102.3 put in the hype a couple of years ago, but I found the truth, no thanks, it is a performative culture that still has that ole Georgia Ave. street culture.

Manifest Bread not only has a neat variety of menu options but, the ambiance!!! It's a cool interior, clean bathrooms, and AMAZING STAFF! I've come twice for breakfast and once for their jambon beurre sandwich. My first breakfast included: - sweet potato bialy: interesting-in-a-good way grouping of ingredients and the crust was crisp - biscuit with butter & jam: biscuit was flaky, crisp, and yet doughy; the right amount of butter, and jam provided tartiness/refreshing bite - olive oil cake: no complaints! My second breakfast included: - biscuit with butter & jam: a must have! - basque cheesecake: I have to be in the mood for cheesecake and I'd aay it was "light and airy" but may not be the best judge here - cardamom bun: last 2 times I came here, the cardamom bun was coated in a thick white frosting, but this time, it was different, so i HAD to go for it and for a fan of cardamom, this was superbub! ABUNDANT amountof cardamom and right amount of moistness! I would have ordered a bialy again but new I was going to have a big lunch so will get it next time. The jambon beurre sandwich was not what I had expected as it was more...flavourful and salty than I would have preferred as I like a plain butter and ham on a baguette sandwich...however, you can taste the quality of the meats used. UPDATE: Went back for breakfast and this time got the mulled apple cider and: - onion poppyseed bialy: I did not need creamcheese with this and it was fine, but if you eat the crust with butter and the apple butter - yum. Crust was on the tough-chew side, but flavor profile was good. Now that I've had it again, will stick to the biscuit. - morning bun: very flaky, crisp, snd the sugar just got all over and me being a messy eater, I felt like I got the sugar all over me and sticky, too. The gingerbread with meyer lemon glaze has a very deep ginger flavor that's quite memorable. Not as keen about the breads.
