But, if you plan ahead you can totally pick up some food. They recently went through an update maybe 1-2 years ago. But, my brain calendar could totally be off. I don't know what I did yesterday. Joking. But, the updates are great. Clean and crisp. There is a good amount of seating as well. This station can and will get crowded so plan accordingly.

It's usually clean--even if it's often crowded--and there's overnight parking available if you need it (though I typically just get dropped off). On this particular trip, my mom dropped me off about 10 minutes before departure, and it was smooth sailing from there. The trains are consistently timely, which I really appreciate when I'm doing quick trips to places like D.C. or Baltimore. The staff is always pleasant enough--clear with directions, helping folks find the right boarding areas, and making announcements that actually help you stay on track (pun intended, LOL). It's convenient. It's cost-effective. It's reliable. And honestly, that's all I need when I'm on the move. Richmond to anywhere up the coast just makes sense from Staples Mill.

I had my e-ticket on my phone and only had to wait about 10-15 before boarding. I'm not sure if we were the first stop, but they told me exactly where to get on for coach and I had my choice of seats and there were empty seats all around me. I never had anyone next to me as people got off before my DC destination. The sign I posted states this station is moving this summer which only has a month left. Too bad. This station is convenient for my friend to get to from Hampton.

I never took it off and so I figured it could be the magnet holding it together must of opened. Because it was an overnight train, I knew Newport News station in VA would be the final stop. The morning of 2/8, I created an Amtrak lost item report and I called the station and was greeted by the polite staff who I gave the report case number and explained the lost item and where I was on the train. The staff member assured me that they have a procedure and would alert the team to search for the item when the train arrives or the last stop. I provided my cell number and it took to the evening of that same day for the staff member to call me back and let me know that the item was found and the next steps to pay for shipping it back. After everything, the watch arrived back to me on 2/13 with no issues. Just amazing service from the staff on the phone with me and being in contact with me during the whole process.

Train ride to DC was wonderful and so much better than driving…read more The Norfolk Amtrak station - not so good. We used the second train of the day to DC which departed at 8:59am. Nothing was open so, no way to get snacks beforehand and very little seating inside. It was my first time and I was shocked by the lack of parking, the gravel roads, no sidewalks or organized crosswalks, lack of parking and pull-off for cars doing drop-off and construction. The extremely small building and waiting area for the "station" was also a surprise. There is some serious work that needs to happen here... the station feels like an afterthought, with the smallest building and arrival/departure area I've ever seen at a station in a larger city like Norfolk. There is clearly some sidewalk work being done - but, having to drag your rolling bag through gravel and broken up streets past cars everywhere and people parked on the single sidewalk was not the best with a baby in a stroller and multiple rolling bags. Boarding was also a pain as they only opened two boarding doors for the entire train so hundreds of people and their bags and babies being loaded on was a huge traffic jam. I'm not sure why they do this... it made getting into the train a huge pain and long, long line. Not impressed with Norfolk Amtrak station area at all. Train was great. Station needs some work and infrastructure.

As in the photos, the station is nothing fancy, however it is clean, the staff is friendly country people and it has the basics. There is a small parking lot, a manned ticket window, a train arrival /departure screen, couple of vending machines, nice wall art, and they have a small waiting area. This station serves the local HBCU institution of Virginia State University. Also, it is a 10-15 minute car share ride to the Army Post Fort Gregg-Adams (formerly known as Fort Lee).

There were 2 passengers already there waiting, but there was no one working at the front desk. God forbid I had a question about anything. There were vending machines and restrooms - 1 of which I used and it was dirty & had gnats flying all around. I've been dropped off and picked up here 2x. They do not play and rush you on and off the train. So, don't be slow or you will get left. All in all, I will continue to use this station because it's close to my family, but I don't have high expectations and realize that I'm on my own when I come here. There's no security. No nothing. So, being aware of this, I will make sure I'm only catching it during the daytime.
