I miss castle wandering in Europe, this just reminded me that we have beautiful castles in our own country. Enjoyed our day wandering the outside of Bacon's castle, this was a quick rest stop for us. We didn't have time for the tour. The castle and grounds were beautiful and clean. The bathrooms were clean, I browsed the gift shop for some goodies. Since being back in the US I have really enjoyed learning my history thru out each state. Hopefully oneday I will get back the Jamestown area for more. I heard the guides are wonderful.

Wealthy merchant and planter Arthur Allen built a Jacobean style home in 1665. The architecture and story of an early rebellion by frontier fighters highlighted my two visits to Surry County to tour the castle. Known as the oldest surviving brick home in North America it is only one of three surviving Jacobean "Great Houses" West of the Atlantic. Saying Allen's home is rare is an understatement. The volunteers that have conducted my tours have been knowledgeable about the home and family. Bacon's Castle has nothing to do with a meat, or even a resident that ever resided at the 17th Century estate. The name is derived from Nathaniel Bacon whose followers led a revolt and fortified the house and vast property in 1676. Bacon's group held the home for a reported three months as a fort before the band of fighters were squashed by the Royal Governor, Sir William Berkeley. Although possible Bacon was at the home during this period there is no evidence he ever resided there. The uprising at the property was known as Bacon's Rebellion and its present day name was first applied in the Virginia Gazette in the Capital City of Williamsburg 1769. The 19th Century history of the house brought a two story Greek Revival wing, a change in the entry way from the center block and Diamond Pane casement windows replaced for double hung. The changes were left intact in its present day. Visitors can view the scars left from the original pedimented surround of the entry. Preservation Virginia Antiquities was able to acquire the unique holding and surrounding property in 1974. It took nine years to rehabilitate and complete research of the residence and families who lived in it. Guided tours began in 1983 and continue to run March - December. A cellphone tour is also available when the property is closed. A museum store is on site in the newer wing of the home. Last I toured the formal gardens they were rough. Significant work has been done by the Garden Club of Virginia to restore their 17th Century beauty. During that last visit my son and I assisted with a dig that would have been outside the 18th Century kitchen. A few pottery items were recovered that day. Bacon's Castle offers something for everyone in the family. The architecture of the home, family story of Arthur Allen and the siege on the house by Bacon's rebels make this a must tour. I recommend warmer climate days in order to take in the outbuilding slave quarters. The gardens would be best viewed in Spring and Summer.

Original kitchen in cellar - dates to 1600's.

Megan gave us an entertaining tour. She recounted fascinating history and answered a lot of questions. It was incredible to stand in this very old structure. Virginia Preservation has been working on the restoration for over 50 years. The artifacts they've unearthed is providing a lot of clues about local history.

Also the rebels from Bacon's Rebellion took shelter in this home, I think without permission from the homeowner.

She has seen weddings, receptions, birthdays, proms, quenceneras, baby showers, bridal showers, engagement announcements, rehearsals, bridal shows, retirement parties, dinner parties, public and private Teas, Holiday parties, business meetings, celebrations of life, fund raising events and even political rallies. The house was originally built in 1770 by William Walthall and passed down to his daughters, Polly and Susannah (our purported ghost), then sold to a Doctor Anderson who extended the front of the house in the 1830s. Later, he sold it to a Doctor Friend who resided there when she would serve as a civil war hospital. Sold again, yet to another doctor, Dr. Thomas Cheatham, the house grew again to form a “T” shaped structure. After his death, the home would fall into severe disrepair only to be restored in the 1930s and named Wrexham. The Hague family lived there and maintained what became a “mansion” in the 1960s when it was added to once again. The new addition begged for an upgraded name, which is the now, Wrexham Hall. Sold to Judge Gates in the 1970s, he would sell it and have it moved to its current location. The last addition was made by the Brennan family, an event room that would serve many for years to come. Now owned by Greg and Carol Marion. She is still an event space as well as a Bed and Breakfast. Come Enjoy

I believe this place is fairly new, because I so remember something else being in this spot some years ago. However, I could be wrong, but let's focus on present day... I was invited to a 50th birthday celebration here last Saturday. I had a general idea of where the place was located since I am sorta familiar with the area being a native and all. But we arrived close to 7pm and everything was all set up. My friend advised us to arrive at 6:45pm because it was a surprise party for her husband... so we popped in and everything was in tact. Even the workers were on their post awaiting to great the guest and provide service. I especially loved seeing this! I don't know about you, but I have been places where people are still setting up or put the early arrival guest in a waiting area until the main area is set. Well not at 757 events, they were on point!! I can be long winded when writing reviews, but I like to give yall an experience and feel how I felt when I visited. Especially, since this is the first review... This place is really all the rage!! Not too big of a event space, but just the right size to entertain a group of 100 maybe more. But a few tables were set up along with a few cocktail tables... a club lounge vibe it gave. I believe the owner decorate the spot, so my friend gave a vision and it came to life last Saturday night. Another big plus... the owner catered the event. The buffet set up is away from the party people... I loved this!!! I didn't have to worry about smelling like food or even the venue smelling like food! The bar set up... another big plus!! I believe the bartender was set up through the owner and he was on point too. Even though he was a one man show, he kept the drinks flowing... no complaints, all smiles!! Now the parking lot is rather small. I did not notice if more parking was behind the building. But if you arrive early enough no worries here, as we did. Overall, this place is gorgeous and far as I can see ran properly and with love! You can tell whoever is behind this, loves what they do. I highly recommend you look into this venue space for your party needs big or small. Take care and enjoy life :)

She is such a joy to work with. For someone like me that worries about every little detail, I felt comfortable leaving it all to her. She is professional, kind and makes sure you are at ease during the entire process. I told her exactly what my vision was and she went ABOVE AND BEYOND. The staff that was there on the day of my event were also very friendly and professional. We loved the bartender. Most importantly, the food was delicious. Not one complaint was given. You will not be disappointed if you book with 757 events. They handle it ALL, food, decorations, liquor, DJ if needed. My husband had the best surprise party ever. I will book here time and time again. Thank you, Karen, and your wonderful staff!

Buyer Beware - I GOT RIPPED OFF BY THESE PEOPLE!…read more I booked an event with Ft. Eustis Club for November 2024. The first rip off was, the contract details they sent me gave a price for 4 hour booking windows. When I made the reservations I was verbally told it was only 3 hours. Second, all the while I was working with the Manager (her name is Azeb) I never, not once, mentioned anything about a 'cash bar' - what I wanted, and all I EVER mentioned was an OPEN BAR for our gests. Azeb also said that I would need to put $400 up front and the total cost of all drinks would be subtracted from that $400. It wasn't until I arrived along with all 50 of my guests that I Azeb informed me that the $400 deposit was for the bar SET UP and BREAK DOWN fee only. Ok, it does NOT cost $400 to setup and break down a bar for 50 people so that's the second RIP OFF! Third, rather than standing there arguing with Azeb over the phone while my guests were seating themselves, Azeb suggested that to get around the having my guest pay for each drink I could give the bar tender my credit card and he would tally up the drinks at the end. So during the course of the party (3 hours) there were maybe 15 of the 50 guest drinking adult beverages. The bar tender hands me the bar tab at the end of the event and it totaled a whopping $488! Are you freakin' serious? 15 people can't possibly drink $488 worth of alcohol in 3 hours. I called Azeb first thing that Monday morning to discuss this with her and all she did was argue about how wrong I was. She didn't believe a thing I had to say and she would NOT lift a single finger to even look into the bar tab situation nor would she return my call as she promised. So at the end of the day I ended up paying a total of $888 for a 3 hour bar. If I had known all this before hand, I would've ask my guest to BYOB. I would HIGHLY recommend you save yourself the headaches of dealing with Azeb and the Ft. Eustis Club. Book someplace else!
