We discovered Amp'd Up on Yelp. Normally, we go by friends recommendations, but we were impressed with his reviews & called Mike to schedule an appointment. He was very accessible to reach & we met him within a day or 2 of our call. We had a challenging project we wanted to achieve & Amp'd Up was the only electric contractor that was willing & trustworthy to take on the project. We have an 1860's home & wanted our 2nd floor to be wired for ceiling lights as there were none. Mike knew there would be some challenges (plaster ceilings, possible knob-in-tube wiring), but is skilled enough to know how deal with any obstacles. On the day of the job, Mike showed up to our appointment on time. He began working immediately & was able to answer all of our electrical questions & curiosities throughout the day. Mike works fast but is extremely clean & pays attention to the every detail. Within 1 day, 4 rooms were wired for lighting & 4 very intricate antique chandeliers were hung & working. Mike also suggested we get light dimmers & it was a great added touch. Overall, great, clean work & the job came under estimate. He left our home spotless! If you're in the northern NJ / tristate area and you need an electrician, Amp'd Up Electrical and specifically it's owner Mike are the best in the business. Mike is not only exceptionally skilled, he's quite creative. We had a few projects in our condo and with concrete walls and a number of building restrictions, Mike was able to come up with solutions to everything. Extremely poor customer service and now, it appears, faulty workmanship. Michael has a temper and is terrible when interacting with customers - he gets a little too "amp'd up". Communication with customers needs to be improved - he accused us of not being available at certain points during a service upgrade though he never communicated those expectations to us in advance - AND he needs to better understand professional conduct. His last call to my home resulted in him yelling at/about my children and my wife feeling unsafe in his presence. I'm now in the process of having to hire a new electrician to correct issues on prior work done by this company. He should be responsible for addressing these issues but we don't feel comfortable with him anywhere near our home/children. We have some wires that needed to be checked before we put in a drop ceiling, we had a basement light switch that needed replacement and also a wall unit air condition that is being replaced by a window. Mike texted me updates to confirm our appointment and another when he was on his way. He was punctual. He charges by the hour which was great because he is all business. Let me start with saying this is the first time I have ever written a review on Yelp and I felt compelled to do so because of the overwhelmingly positive and professional experience I had with Mike and his outstanding work at Amp'd Up Electrical. I discovered Amp'd Up Electrical online, after reading a number of positive reviews I decided to reach out to schedule an appointment. Mike was very easy to reach, exceptionally responsive and came out to see my project shortly thereafter. I live in a pre-1900's home so I was looking for lighting (NONE of my rooms had anything pre-existing) so more specifically i needed to install recessed lighting (8+ in total), some ceiling fans and a panel upgrade from 100 amp to 200 amp, so Mike had thought this was a 2 day job (got it done in 2 days too, talk about fast work without any lack of quality). After my initial meeting with Mike I knew he was the right direction for me (before even seeing how fair his estimates were) he provided really useful insight/feedback on the approach/design to my lighting project, which no other company came close to, his attention to my project's specific details and potential challenges was outstanding. The estimate which followed was extremely timely, very fair and easy to understand, Mike was available to walk-through it if needed and the process with him was great. After signing up there were no hidden surprises in Mike's work (that weren't a result of the house's nature, which there were none anyway). Mike was always on time (if not early), responsive to all communication throughout the project, super efficient, clean, professional, and truly has a great eye for detail. His work was FANTASTIC, literally exceeded every expectation I could have had (the quality of work was only further confirmed by our inspector who praised everything up and down). All the lighting came out amazing, you would think the house was built with it since day 1 by the quality of how everything was installed and how clean everything was left. The electrical panel upgrade was equally as impressive in all aspects (Mike even had to build a new frame to mount the panel to since my exterior basement wall is all stone). I'd give them 0 STARS if there were an option! Be AWARE! Mike needs to take a class on how to handle potential customers! Not only he wasn't able to handle a simple negotiation in a decent way, he sent us a Sales Tax Form ST-8 (Certificate of Exempt/Capital Improvement Form) to fill out for a totally overpriced receptacle replacement job that has nothing to do with the Capital Improvement! That form, if filled by us, would not only provide him with a double benefit (by taxing us), but it would potentially put us in a legally liable situation by misrepresenting the job! If you are contracting someone for just a repair job (of a bad receptacle replacement for example), no such from is necessary and you SHOULD BE paying taxes on the repair - labor and parts. However, if it is related to the capital improvement (something major that increases value of your property), you SHOULD NOT be paying the labor and parts taxes for the job done to your contractor - this is what this Tax Form ST-8 is designed for! Find and Read the Instructions to that form he is NOT providing you with! We are not there to help him to scam the system and put ourselves in a legally accountable situation! It is dishonest of you to say in your comments below that I asked you to do 1 hour job for half hour rate. This was quite the opposite! We were willing to pay you a full hour rate + for just 0.5 hour job until you started jacking up the price. You also left room for "additional costs" in your written estimate. Is that fair? And is replacing a receptacle (and possibly a cord, which is provided) 0.5 hour or 1 - 1.5 job? Anyone with a similar experience would tell you that this is less than 0.5 hour job! It would also be fair if you'd actually reply to my questions about rates and forms and explain that the ST-8 form was sent to us in error. I, in fact, asked you about the ST-8 form and tax implications in a message to which you NEVER replied. If I didn't research what that form was about, we would be held accountable for filling it out for you. I have our entire correspondence saved and would happily share the details with those who are interested to know more, like how much you wanted to charge for half an hour job, which we find totally outrageous for the area. And, given Yelp's limitations to directly reply to your comments, you thought that we would not find a way to publicly reply to your dishonest comments? Well, wrong, the truth always finds a way to get out! I am also happy to inform that we found a great and honest electrician in the area! He is charging less than your initial (which we thought was reasonable, until you jacked it up) quote for the same work.
