Honestly great food, super convenient if staying on hotel circle by Kings Inn and you think Crust is your only option. Decent full service bar, and though it can be quiet some nights it has a good atmosphere. The Enchiladas Suizas, are delicious and for gauge i'm a fan of Cafe Guadalajara's enchiladas. This place puts them to shame. Highly encourage it any night you want a reasonable priced meal for some delicious beans and rice. We ended up eating here mostly out of convenience since it's located inside the hotel. We were exhausted and traveling with a fussy toddler, so it felt like the easiest option. Unfortunately, the experience was really disappointing. I ordered the fish tacos and specifically chose grilled fish over beer-battered. What came out was nothing like grilled fish--it was warm, slimy, pale, completely unseasoned, and definitely not grilled. I've lived in Southern California my whole life and have had (and made) plenty of fish tacos, so I know what to expect. This wasn't it. When we brought it to their attention, instead of apologizing, they argued that the fish was grilled and claimed they "lightly batter" their grilled fish and that it's supposed to be served that way. That makes no sense--and if that's truly how they prepare it, it absolutely needs to be clearly stated on the menu. Calling that "grilled fish" is misleading. The situation became even more frustrating when it came to the refund. They went back and forth about whether to refund the full order or just the tacos, and asked us to bring back the leftover food so the cooks could see it. It felt like we had to prove our experience rather than just be taken at our word. To make matters worse, we started feeling sick a couple of hours after eating. The rice was okay, the beans were edible but not good, and the quesadilla was average (it did come with guacamole and sour cream). In the end, we did get a refund for the tacos, but the overall experience--from the food quality to how the situation was handled--left a really bad impression. If this is their version of "grilled fish," I'd be hesitant to order anything else. read more

Mexican food in the Kings Inn San Diego. What can you say about it. I ordered the chile relleno plater. Good tasting. Would like a little more cheese in or on top. Rice and beans were good. Not dry or too wet. The star of the meal was warm. Beans and rice were hotter than the Chile relleno. Service was fast, even with other couples and one large group when I was there. The waiter was kind enough to correct me on my order as to which plater I wanted because there were two types of Chile relleno platers. Ambiance was pleasant and not loud. Enough to enjoy music and my meal. Pros: The dish was good. Nice atmosphere to enjoy your meal and the company you are with. Cons: Wish my Chile relleno was just as temperature hot like my rice and beans. Would I go back: If you been following me. I also like to try other things on the menu. So, this one is an maybe. This place was a hidden gem for Mexican food! At first, I wondered if the reviews were accurate but they definitely were. It wasn't too crowded and we were able to get situated quickly. Our server was a true gentlemen and did a great job getting us drinks and recommending entrees. The margaritas were so good and their salsa was not spicy but still had flavor. They do tell you they charge 2.95 for a refill of chips and salsa, but we did not need it. We had the fish burrito, chicken fajitas, chicken wings and chicken enchilada dinner. All entrees were delicious and tasted authentic. Also, my husband wanted Chili Colorado but changed his mind and the server brought out a sample of it which was not only a kind gesture but it was so good! Food was terrible. The tortillas were so thick that they were like shoe leather. The chips were stale and the salsa had a very strange taste. The chicken was very dry and had absolutely no flavor. We gave this restaurant a second try and we were very disappointed. I don't know how this restaurant stays in business. Food is the worst of any restaurant we've eaten at in 67 years. Very poor quality. The service was good but there was only one other family in the entire restaurant. The ambiance was old and gloomy. The restaurant could use a facelift. For what it is, The Amigo Spot gets 5 stars. What is The Amigo Spot? It is an old-school Mexican restaurant located in the super cool, mid-century King's Inn hotel in Hotel Circle. You turn left inside the neat old hotel lobby and you enter The Amigo Spot. Decor is fun! It's like stepping back in time. Ask for a booth. They are a little more dimly lit, which makes the experience even better. My Enchiladas Suizas was incredible. They make the best green sauce and the cheese they use is perfect. If I were going to get another margarita here, I'd ask that it be made with fresh lime instead of a mix. But everything else we had was in-sane. The chips and salsa are addictive as hell. The Amigo Spot is located in the pristine mid-century King's Inn in Mission Valley. The building has not been renovated or "refreshed", so it is as if you are back in 1958, which is wonderful. No fake "vintage" here. I like the banquettes for two in the bar when you enter the dining room at The Amigo Spot. The house Margarita is good and only $8.00. The menu is still on a COVID-19 streamline version, so there is a limited selection. We hear they are "working on a new menu", but when will it be revealed? For now, the Pollo "en crema" is acceptable, and the corn tortillas offered with the meal are better than expected. Service by the bartender, Amado [who will take care of you if you sit in the bar area] is exceptionally kind, and he is fun to speak with. He also makes a good after dinner Café Mexicano, with Tequila and Kahlua, topped with whipped cream and served in a clear glass mug with a handle. After dinner, be sure to take a stroll through the King's Inn gardens to the kidney shaped pool surrounded by palms. It is located in a courtyard in the center of the hotel. It has a perfectly mid-century vibe. When I visited this evening, there was a lone swimmer rippling through the waters and the sky was a rosy pink from the sunset. The service was horrible - we get there and ask to be seated outside - the server looked and us horrified and said the only clean table they had left was too far away - it was literally like 20 steps! We said we would wait and he seemed unhappy that he needed to clean an empty table. There were 4 of us. We then ordered 2 appetizers (the taquitos with guacamole on the side and quesadilla) they did not put guac on the side. We ordered a soda , 3 mixed drinks and a beer. They brought us 4 mixed drinks and did not even card my stepson (he is of age - barely - but they didn't know that). He came back like 5 minutes later and we told him the extra drink wasn't ours and he said oh it belongs to another table and was going to just give it to them without remaking it. Food was standard. Drinks were ehh. We got the bill and they didn't give us the hotel guest discount. The other server fixed that and brought us a new bill. I paid it and left. It wasn't until after that I realized they charged us $12 for a drink that - 1. We didn't even order and 2. They took back because we didn't order it. Our bill for 2 apps, 1 beer, 1 soda and 3 mixed drinks we ordered plus 1 we didn't order or keep including tip was $81.99. The discount for being a guest at hotel was $2.54. Despite the convenience of being onsite at the hotel, we will not be going back to this place. read more

We're staying at King's Inn and ate here our first night, just in time for Taco Tuesday! $4 tacos and they are generous with the meat and the tacos were filling. I loved the red and green sauce and the grilled pepper that came with my tacos. I ordered the pollo and carne asada, the asada was my favorite. The entire staff was very attentive and accommodating and I loved how the restaurant was decorated. Another plus is 20% off the bill if you are staying at the hotel. Delicious! Husband ordered the macho burrito with Pollo Asada (grilled chicken). It was a wet style burrito smothered in sauce and cheese with a generous amount of guac and sour cream to the side. He loved it. He's a fan of Pollo Asada. He had to take a third of it home in a box because it was so much food. We are locals and live close by. (I've lived here for over 40 years). My son ordered the chicken chimichanga. No complaints there! It had shredded chicken breast. It looked like it contained a good amount of meat. I had read a review where the guest didn't like the shredded chicken, so the manager responded that they could have requested grilled chicken. But when I attempted to do that, the waiter told me it was not an option. It didn't really matter in the end because my son ate every last bite! We asked for the guac on the side for him, and the restaurant got it right. Speaking of guacamole, theirs has a TON of flavor. I thought it was mildly spicy, in fact. Lastly, I ordered the Carne Asada burrito. This Carne Asada burrito is not a typical casual San Diego style carne asada burrito. That would be one with thin chopped strips of beef mixed with guacamole (in my experience). However, this carne asada burrito had delicious, tender grilled beef bursting with grilled beef flavor. I repeat, this was higher quality than a typical taco shop. (I also love typical taco shop food, but this was more restaurant style). There were also some beans in the burrito--so I would say this is what locals would call a "mixed" burrito. Also atypical of a carne asada burrito, the scrumptious guacamole was on the side. The service was excellent. The waiter and other staff were very attentive, answered all of my questions, and all of our orders were correct. They also offer contactless payment via a QR code on the receipt. So you can use Apple Pay. The decor was festive and fun. I thought it was all on-point for being so close to Old Town. We were pleased to stay at the King's Inn and discover the Amigo Spot mexican restaurant. Visiting over the weekend from Santa Barbara, we ate at the Amigo Spot our first evening. I had the Macho Burrito,chile verde, and was HUGE and delicious. Spouse had a cheese enchilada plate. Also very good. We have some good mexican restaurants in Santa Barbara, but Amigo Spot is as good as the best in SB. Service was great, atmosphere nice, parking easy. All good. read more

I have been a regular at the Amigo Spot for close to 10 years. We stopped by on Tuesday for Taco Tuesday and us, along with our friends had a great time. The street tacos are some of the best in San Diego. They do Al Pastor, Carne Asada, Suadero, Pollo, just to name a few. After tacos we had some Fried Ice Cream. We enjoyed our entrees and thought they were flavorful. The portions are large and our bellies were plenty full when we were finished. The only thing we would not buy again is the chips & salsa. We were staying at the Kings Inn (hotel where Amigo is located) for an undetermined amount of time. We came to Amigo multiple times to enjoy their delicious fajitas!! We ordered for 2 and still had leftovers. Then, we ordered for 2 and split between 3; that portion was just right! Wish I could give them FIVE stars, but I have to admit: the fact they weren't able to warm up our fajitas leftovers that we purchased at THEIR restaurant and were staying at THEIR hotel for multiple nights made me upset. Really, you can't warm up food purchased there for your own guests? The manager then suggested I rent a microwave from the lobby for the night. Good to know. That was exactly what we did since we were beat from working all day and had zero energy to do anything after that. Come, eat and drink well, but don't ask them to warm up your leftovers (lol). Was in San Diego for a family trip staying at the Double Tree. We were able to walk right over. Super convenient. Split the California Burrito with rice and beans and Carne Asasa Fries with the wife. This food is the real deal. It's a super low key spot with tons of parking and great food. The service was great. The staff were super attentive to my kids.
