Imagine walking into a dark bar and feeling like you just busted in on a funeral, except everyone is welcoming you and suddenly you're hanging with the locals. The lamplighter is a classic neighborhood hang in mission hills- I think it's a dive bar by day; but I think it gets "hipster" by night. I enjoyed the ambiance, bartender, patrons & music. Ella is the best! From the moment we walked in, the energy that Ella and the security guard brought set the tone and had me expecting a great experience. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case with a couple of the bartenders. They came across as snarky and condescending, and it felt like I was inconveniencing them just by placing a drink order. The contrast between the warm welcome at the door and the service at the bar was disappointing. read more

I had a very disappointing experience at Lamplighter on Thursday, July 23. I came in with my trained service dog and was immediately told that I "don't have a disability" and that I needed to provide paperwork for my service dog. As someone with a disability, I found this treatment both upsetting and discriminatory. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), businesses cannot require documentation or certification for a service dog. Staff are only permitted to ask the limited questions allowed by law. Rather than argue or create a scene, I chose to leave with my service dog. I then went to La Puerta, where we were welcomed without any issues and treated with courtesy and respect. Based on my experience, I will be filing a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice. I hope Lamplighter takes the time to properly train its staff on ADA requirements so that no one else with a disability has to experience this kind of treatment. read more

We went for drinks last night at The Lamplighter. It's a fun hole in the wall type establishment. It's about the size of your living room with some fun karaoke on the end. It's a lot of fun, if not loud. There is a patio behind the bar area that is perfect to escape and/or if you wanted to get a smoke. It was a bit of an older crowd the night we were there, but who knows if that was indicative of every night. A fun time was being had though, so these might have been regulars. Lastly, they're cash only, so make sure you've got plenty because cards won't fly here. read more

The service was amazing- bar tenders were attentive. But, if you aren't a regular- don't come here to sing karaoke. The karaoke organization was terrible. No rotation, we waited almost 2 hours for one of us to sing one song out of the three of us that put one in...multiple singers sang multiple times before us- some who came in after us. And, we were there before 8:30. I was celebrating my birthday and this kinda low key ruined the night. My other friend waited 4 more songs before singing after me...we left after about 2.5 hours because it felt beyond disrespectful that we had this experience....even after speaking to staff to ask what the rotation was. We had asked about an hour in and were told we would be up in 6 songs. That didn't happen. The DJ was incredibly rude and does not know what he is doing. read more

We drive an HOUR to this freaking place to get turned away at the door because it's technically "a bar" even though they have a full dinner menu. When I point out none of this is advertised anywhere, I'm informed it's on Open Table, and that we should've seen it there, and were dismissed. They said they could give us another restaurant recommendation and then proceeded to just dismiss us without even that courtesy. We go back to verify this age limit, and it's there... one TINY line 2 scrolls down on the page, WAY beyond any of the information needed to just book a table, which is the only thing Open Table is used for. Complete waste of time for a poorly advertised bar with zero helpful staff on a dumpy street by the airport.

I have been here on two different occasions and had very different experiences. The first time was similar to most other reviewers. It was crowded and the only way you were going to sing was if you were raining 20's on the KJ or were boys with him. This is definitely not cool. I'm not against tipping the KJ, but there is a complete difference between tipping and flat out bribery! Usually the people making it rain on the KJ are the ones doing an 8 person rendition of "Pour Some Sugar on Me". Those performances are as annoying as the "5 dollar foot long campaign". There is no need for that to be done on stage. To those who practice this behavior, please, keep your 20 spot, stand with your posse, and sing along to other performances. It will save you money, keep the crowd less annoyed, and will be a step towards stopping this KJ's scandal. Like other reviews I had read, I finally got hip to the scheme and dropped a 10 spot on him for my friend and he still never sang. So bogus! My second experience was much better. Granted it wasn't as crowded as the first time and there was a different guy operating the songs. He was an equal opportunity karaokeer for the most part except for one or two guys, which I think were his buddies. He let them go more frequently than others, but at least they were doing good songs and being funny. (One guy did all 80s and 90s sitcom theme songs.) Besides the shady kj, this bar is a pretty cool place to hang. People are always friendly, bartenders are pretty hilarious, and the drinks are some of the cheapest you'll find around town. (Its cash only so hit up that automated teller machine.) It's unfortunate that one kj can ruin this place for so many people because it's a fun spot. You'll get yours one day shady kj. i went to the lamplighter on tuesday night march 1st, 2011 with some out of town friends. we were having a good time and getting ready to sing karaoke. when i got up to sing, two men at the bar started yelling out "Faggot!" and "Queer". so i called them out over the microphone. the kj then asked them to leave at which point a third gentleman started making Freddy Mercury comments. all 3 were then asked to leave by the kj. at this point the bartender refused to back the kj so we both went over to confront the 3 guys. an off duty "employee" then proceeded to pick me up from behind and attempt to carry me out of the bar saying i was causing a disturbance. i stayed to sing my song and the 3 guys stayed as well, all the while continuing to call out homophobic slurs. when i asked the bartender for a business card he said they didnt have any and refused to give me contact info for the manager or owner. as a gay man i have never been forced to undergo that brand of establisment supported humiliation. having wasted money on a few rounds of drinks at this point i left. if i could take back the star i was forced to give to place this review, i would. i strongly urge anyone who believes that this act was wrong to stay far, far away from the lamplighter as their $s are going towards this type of ignorance and unfortunately, blatant stupidity. this story has also been reported to the LGBT Weekly, Frontiers and Michael Turko. hopefully a lesson is learned from this experience. thank you. A group of girlfriends and I came here last Saturday for a girls night out and some karaoke. A few of us have been here before and have always had a blast. We were disappointed when we heard that the usual female KJ wasn't going to be there for the evening, and even more disappointed when the KJ for the night came out, and we could literally hear groans from the crowd, not a good sign. Well, after about 10 minutes, we saw him being rude to a group of people that were sitting near the KJ booth. One of the males in the group said they were going to complain to the management, and he literally laughed at him. When the man came back after he complained, the KJ said to the guy arrogantly "Well, how did that go for you buddy", I heard the whole conversation because I was in line to put my name on the list. Throughout the night, he was a total creep. He hit on me and another one of my friends, ummm, no thanks buddy! He was also taking bribes throughout the evening to move people up on the list, and told people they couldn't sing unless they gave him money. Chatted with a few of the regulars, and they all had negative things to say about him. The vibe wasn't nearly as fun as when the female kj is there, and a lot of people cut out early, which is what we did as well. Good thing Hillcrest is a only a few blocks over, which is where we went and had a blast. We will never stay again if we see that male KJ walk up to the booth, and I'm sure a lot of other people will do the same. read more

Fancy cocktails: nope Dress code: nope Pretentious vibe: absolutely not People dancing like nobody is watching: yes This place is simple in the best possible way: strong drinks, good music, and a dance floor that somehow convinces everyone they should stay "just one more hour." This bar has history. It's seen birthdays, bad decisions, great decisions, first dates, breakups, and people absolutely thriving on the dance floor until close. And the best part? Nobody here is trying to be cool. They just are in the moment. The lighting is perfectly dim enough that everyone looks great. The drinks are strong enough that the dance floor and questionable karaoke are always a good idea, and you might leave with five new best friends. Every time someone says, "Should we go somewhere else?" the answer is always: "Nooooo... let's stay." Look, Lamplighter isn't trying to be the fanciest bar in San Diego. It's just trying to be a really good time. And honestly? It ALWAYS succeeds!! Also, on a random note, the water here is suspiciously good. Like really good. And I'm a water snob. So after being sweated by all the ninja cops in North Park we found this place, thanks to the yelp iphone app. Definition of a Dive Bar. People who go out to get wasted on Tuesday nights are pretty much guaranteed disasters. Freaks upon freaks. Shady individuals. Egg nog lady, tryna give everyone a taste of her yule-tide joy. Morse '79 white guy in a northface winter coat with the pinoy asian fever. "Mabuhay tigers!" Guy who just broke up with his girl 2hrs earlier manhandling a friendly woman. Love in this club being found by two lovebirds to the backdrop of a projection screen with the line "Out of nothing at all" about 50 times over. The Karaoke DJ guy looks like he hates his life. I would too if I had to hear drunk white people singing either "Ice Ice Baby" or "Baby Got Back" 7 nights a week. I think he liked us Filipinos who came through and added some much needed variety to the song selections rather than the usual Eminem - "Without Me's" There's a good book of song selection. Has a lot of new stuff. But unfortunately, no Sasha Fierce...yet. The stage is kinda ghetto with the cable public access bed sheet pinned to the wall. When your up there the mics feel like they don't work. But we're all off key anyways, so who cares. Place is cash only and the ATM charges you $3.50! WTF?! Well, a lot has changed in my mind since I wrote my last review of this place. Don't get me wrong I love the lamplighter and the people who go there, but there is one huge flaw and I just found out his name JJ! Last night was one of the worse experience I have had there and of course I brought a group of friends that shared in this chaos! The bar was packed of course, but for some reason there seemed to be only one hard working bartender there. Every time we go to get a drink, only one bartender there. Occasionally we would see 2 or maybe 3, but that guy JJ whenever he was behind the bar he was a complete douche bag!!! He obviously HATES working there, so why is he!!! He is RUDE, OBNOXIOUS, and a DOUCHE bag. At the end of the evening he puts the microphone to the speakers so that it lets out a full blown shriek!! Not once, but multiple times just to annoy this shit out of people!!! What gives with the inconsiderate person and why is he still working there?!?!! I've heard he is the owner's son, not sure if this is true, but that would explain a lot. . . The people that keep this bar going are the customers, so I hope he checks his attitude at the door or this place will be losing lots of it regulars and ultimately MONEY!!! If you haven't experienced Raya at Lamplighter, you're not living. I mean, are you even aware of what you're missing? Picture this: you walk in, and there she is--Raya, like some radiant vision from a dream, just standing there, lighting up the whole room. She is stunning, otherworldly, like a mythical being somehow roped into karaoke hosting. And when she grabs that mic? GOOD. NIGHT. The pipes on her! It's like if Adele, Olivia Rodrigo, and Hayley Williams had somehow united in a lightning bolt and were reincarnated as this karaoke deity in the form of Raya. Lamplighter is hands down one of the best bars in San Diego! The atmosphere is always fun and welcoming, the drinks are strong and reasonably priced, and the karaoke nights are a blast. The staff does a great job of keeping the energy high while still making sure everyone feels safe and comfortable. I especially want to give a shoutout to James, the security guard. He goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is taken care of. He's professional, attentive, and approachable--always keeping things under control with a great attitude. It's clear he genuinely cares about the safety of the guests, which makes the whole experience that much better. Also, Mariah at the front door is amazing! She's welcoming, friendly, and makes you feel at home the moment you walk in. Having her greet guests really sets the perfect tone for the night. I just came back from an evening at the Lamplighter. It was my sisters b-day and we thought karaoke would be a fun way to spend most of our evening. The place is a total dive bar and lounge. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THAT AS IT JUST ADDS TO THE ATMOSPHERE. My issue was with the the DJ NAZI/ simpleton programmer. The guy does not play your songs unless you bribe him. BEWARE: The guys name is George Kennedy , he is a white haired, white bearded old man ( approx 60+) and he will promise that you are close to being the next act, but he is LYING!!!! We were there for 4 hours and only got to sing 2 songs out of the 4 songs that we requested and we had to bribe him $10 bucks just to sing the second song...what a $!^%$@!!! Clearly he is making a decent living in this recession that we are all suffering from! There are so many better places in San Diego to Karaoke than this lame place that employs jerks like this. Dear Yelp and fellow yelppers, Let me tell you a little sumthin sumthin about this bar. 1st off it opens at 6 am and they stop serving at 1:50 am so you can take a 4 hr. nap and come back in for a Bloody. 2nd off happy hour lasts from 6am- 8pm or 9 pm depending on the bartender. drinks are super cheap and even more super strong. during the day this place is your normal average Dive bar: dark , classic bar setting of just a bunch of regulars fighting over the jukebox. But At night time karaoke happens and changes everything.... people pour in and it looks like more of a night club than a dive. also it is frequented by the most diverse crowd i've ever seen: i have been hit on by 40 yr old cougars, hooked up with 21 yr old girls, and sing duets with a 70 yr old. in closing.... its a fun place w/ cheap strong drinks. oh and contrary to yelpers' beliefs there is no cover charge..... read more

My husband and I went to the Lamplighter to check it out and the minute we walked in we were greeted by this beautiful friendly bartender. She immediately asked us how we were doing and if we would like her to make us a drink. She proceeded to tell us how wonderful and fun the karaoke was in the evening and encouraged us to stay. She checked on us and engaged in conversation with all the patrons all while doing her job. We were hungry and suggested places in the area and we ended up getting pizza next door. By the end of the evening, we knew each others names and we have gone there since hoping to see her smiling face! Her name is Jessica and you won't forget her if you get a chance to meet her! I am new to San Diego. The Lamplighter was the first place I went out. I had heard from a few people it was a great place to karaoke. I had NO idea how INCREDIBLE it was on a Saturday night! I have been doing karaoke since I was 18. This is by far the coolest place I've ever been. The crowd on the dance floor really makes it feel like you're performing a concert. The high fives after I sang were never ending. Being the new kid in a strange town, it made me feel so welcome. This Lamplighter made me feel warm and fuzzy all over... and I don't even drink! My friend however loved their Moscow Mules. I was pleasantly surprised that they also have ginger beer, my new passion. 5 stars in every category! read more

Staff is not welcoming at all. Lady with brown hair that works the day shift is pretty rude and acts like they don't want anyone besides regulars there. I felt so uncomfortable I decided to leave without ordering anything since it seem that my group and I were not welcomed there. They also expect you to not talk loudly and will look at you weird for having a loud voice, when we entered it seem like we entered a library. The KJ is a total douchebag or racist, hot white girls have no problem getting a song in, and he treated my roommate and I like we were beneath him. There's no reason why anybody should be treated the way we were treated last night even when I was trying to give him a tip. THERE IS NO COVER CHARGE AT THE LAMPLIGHTER...I REPEAT NO COVER CHARGE. My guess is the people saying that there is must not have been at The Lamplighter in over 2 years. The FACTS... This bar has cheep drinks comparing to downtown and PB. The bar tenders are very friendly and make strong drinks. If You come in after 10 on a Friday or Saturday don't expect to get to sing there is a long list and only a certain number of people will be able to sing before the bar closes. Multiple bystanders witnessed his behavior but failed to intervene, assuming it was just "relationship drama" After the man finally left, the venue's security completely misread the situation. Instead of checking on my well-being or ensuring the aggressor had left the premises, security targeted and chased me as if I were the problem. It is incredibly disappointing and dangerous for a business's security team to lack the basic situational awareness and training required to identify the actual victim in a situation. I felt entirely unprotected by the staff here. I hope management takes this as a serious sign that their security team needs immediate retraining on bystander intervention and de-escalation, rather than harassing women who are already in vulnerable situations.

One thing this place does exceptionally well is the bar service. Even when it's packed, I've never had to wait long for a drink. Cocktails run around $17, which is pretty standard for downtown San Diego nightlife. The crowd is always great, the lighting and production create an energetic atmosphere, and the overall vibe is a lot of fun. It's definitely one of those places that's even better with a group, especially if you split the cost of a table. Overall, if there's an artist you really want to see, it's worth checking out. Between the music, the energy, and the crowd, it's always a fun night out.
