The biggest disappointment this year was that the summer outdoor terrace was closed. I came here on a Sunday to see James Hype after he performed at Into the Horizon. Cover was just under $50, which felt a bit high considering there's no general seating unless you reserve a table, and the DJ wasn't actually the headlining performance at the festival. One thing this place does exceptionally well is the bar service. Even when it's packed, I've never had to wait long for a drink. Cocktails run around $17, which is pretty standard for downtown San Diego nightlife. The crowd is always great, the lighting and production create an energetic atmosphere, and the overall vibe is a lot of fun. It's definitely one of those places that's even better with a group, especially if you split the cost of a table. Overall, if there's an artist you really want to see, it's worth checking out. First time in the down town san diego area and was here to see dj r3hab The club itself was nice and spacious with 3 floors and great vibes. The sound system absolutely will pound your ears so definitely be prepared to have your ears ringing for some days. But the lights, music, dj line up, and etc were amazing. NOVA SD We've come here for years but our favorites times are getting booths. It's nice to not feel crowded and actually have room to dance. They have multiple levels. And the top floor is the rooftop where it's a different DJ with a different vibe so if you want fresh air, go to the rooftop. Pro tip: always get with a VIP host to find which dates and prices, if you're looking to splurge on a booth. And make sure you get the booth you request. Even on the cheapest of nights when we spend a date night here, it's always over $1500. We spent my birthday here and it was well over $2k so even though they say the booth price and drinks, you end up spending a lot more. The VIP servers were so accommodating! When we first checked into the booth, I ran back to the entrance to get my other friend and they brought the Marquee with my name and sparklers. Haha awkward without the birthday girl (me) in the booth so after talking to them, they came back later. I would suggest that the servers make sure to tell the guests "stay in the booth since we'll be back with your marquee" since I'm sure I'm not the only one. Also, we usually always have someone in our booth at all times while there's drinks there but we noticed the booth next to us was a group of guys and when they left the booth, someone in the crowd stole their bottles. It was pretty messed up so if you get a booth, watch your drinks. Overall, this is a fun place to go with the best DJs! And you wouldn't know it but I'm completely sober in these photos. The hostess were all really sweet and made sure we had other juices for me to have. Well I really wanted to experience this venue I called to see what accommodations they could provide for someone who has mobility issues and can't stand for long periods. Only option is to pay $850 for a table.... Well I don't drink and not looking to pay $850 for Timmy Trumpet. My group & I came to Nova SD for Sullivan King and overall, everything was absolutely perfect. The drinks were pretty good and the interior was great. It was much bigger than expected. The bouncers were kind as well as the bartenders inside. They even had a little patio upstairs if you needed a smoke break or a breather from all the loud music. I'm not very big on clubbing but I would most definitely come back to Nova after that wonderful experience. read more

I experienced Nova SD last night, DJ Hugel was headlining. Door security was efficient, they weren't rude or anything like other places. Every time I came to the bar I was quickly attended. The Bartenders were friendly and churned out drinks with lightning speed. I appreciated being able to enjoy the nightclub more than waiting in a bar line. I had a really disappointing experience at NOVA San Diego because of the way the manager and staff treated us. The employees were already being rude and dismissive, so we asked if we could speak with a manager to address the situation. A female manager came over, but instead of trying to help or listen, she was extremely rude and unprofessional. While we were in the middle of explaining what happened, she literally walked away from us mid-conversation. No attempt to resolve the issue, no apology, nothing. It was incredibly disrespectful. If you're going to manage a venue, especially a busy nightlife spot, basic customer service and professionalism should be expected. Unfortunately, that was completely lacking here. Very disappointing experience overall. The rude service and the way the manager handled the situation left a really bad impression. I hope management looks into how guests are being treated because this was not acceptable. read more

My husband and I went to Nova to see Deadmau5, one of our favorite old school DJs, perform on NYE. Though I had never been to Nova, I had spent many weekend nights back at this venue when it had been the old beloved Stingaree or the more recent Omnia. We arrived around 10 PM, following a dinner nearby. There was no line to get in. I was a bit surprised to find that not only was my bag searched and I was wanded by a metal detector, but was also patted down. The bouncers confiscated my husband's eye drops (he has issues with his contacts), saying the the eyedrops could be drugs. I know it's good to be safe, but these exaggerated antics make me wonder what is wrong with this place. When we walked in, the show hadn't really started yet. The dance floor was empty at that time. We decided to head to the rooftop to get some air and a drink, sit down and relax. The best things about the club were that the rooftop had a lot of seating, as no one had purchased the tables up there, the bar service was fast, and the restrooms were clean with polite attendants. When it was after 11 PM, we headed down to check out the show. The floor was full... and I mean so full you couldn't get onto the floor. If you were there, you couldn't move to dance, nor move on or off the floor to get drinks. We stood back by the wall, in one of the only areas where you could actually see the performance without security telling us we couldn't stand there. Since the floor is completely surrounded by bottle service tables, the rest of the crowd has nowhere to stand other than to fill the walkways. This did not make for a fun night of dancing at all. Another huge disappointment is that the club did absolutely nothing at midnight. I mean, this was NYE! There was no balloon drop, no streamers, no fire, no nothing. It was just basically a crowded club night as usual. We got tired of standing in our corner, so we retired back to the rooftop to watch the performance from the screen and listen to the music piped through speakers. It was kind of a bummer that the only comfortable way to listen to the music was to remove ourselves from the stage area. Late in the night, closer to 1 AM, we went back inside to the balcony where we could mostly see the show and actually dance a bit, but that was after many other patrons had already left. The website states that there is a dress code, but many people wore sneakers and some were in sweats, or even pajamas. It is nice to have a place that hosts some great EDM artists, but it defeats the purpose if there is no space to dance, or breath, or a way to get to and from the bar. I will definitely continue to look to other venues to see my favorite artists. read more

They have a second floor with a good view down to the stage and then they also have a rooftop where they play music and you can hang out. I'll start with the good: -paramedics on site walking around -decent bathroom lines / # of stalls -short bar lines (usually no wait) -bar staff was friendly could be better: if the only areas people who do not have a table can stand at is the center of the floor and the top floor center than stop overselling the show, it's ridiculous you have absolutely zero view upstairs in the center and SO MANY people stand there it's crazy. We luckily found a spot in the back by the stair entrance at the bottom and the garbage can that we could stand at and security didn't boot us away. Thank you! They were actually pretty chill about it because we weren't being drunk messes just trying to vibe without being trampled on. A bottle of water was $7.50 before tax. It can get pretty crowded on the floor, depending on who is performing, so you may need to get there a little early if you want a closer spot. Sometimes it's PACKED, where you're not able to move. The drinks are expensive ($20+). They have three stories: floor 1 = dance floor, floor 2 = balcony, floor 3 = outdoor patio. It's not too loud, but if you have sensitive ears, bring earplugs. Both gender bathrooms on each floor. For less popular artists, you can get on the guest list for free. read more

A friend had a drink in the line, he told us we needed to through it away, (understandable) but told her to go all the way back down the line of people. I was celebrating my birthday with a friend back in August since our bdays are only one day apart. We were hopping around downtown and got hooked up to see Kascade!! While we were at the bar, someone asked if we wanted access to bottle service and we were led to the back of the stage! The venue is cool and music is really loud. This review is for the Time Machine event which plays 90s/2000s music. My husband and I had a great experience on 3/22. There was plenty of seating for us old timers who need to be off our feet and just want to relax. The 3 stories, fun ambiance, and chill crowd is exactly what we were looking for, plus it was free with RSVP. The only cons we observed were: They had a strange dress code for a themed night. Guys weren't allowed to wear sleeveless shirts, or jerseys. There were guys wearing these items but in a themed (90s) way so I thought they should let them slide. The flier for the themed event had the Backsteet Boys on it yet the DJ didn't play any 90s/2000s boy bands or Britney/Christina. Overall had a blast and hope they bring it back. read more

Staff was friendly but it was difficult to get onto the dance floor before the headliner came on; security handled it well. They didn't blow confetti which was disappointing but maybe there was other reasons for that. Food was good and drinks weren't too much. I'd go back! As opposed to a classic night club, NovaSD offered a more EDM centric, rave-like experience within a physical club. Tickets were very expensive, averaging $95 after taxes and fees. Downtown parking was impossible so we opted for an Uber instead. Entrance security was friendly and check-in went quickly, with all of entering within 2 minutes. We were pat down and our digitally sent tickets let us in. The main floor was nicely air conditioned with overhead fans. Personally we enjoyed the open top floor since it was less crowded and hot from the night breeze. There was a poorly lit backdrop for photos but the lighting made everyone look horrible. The bartenders up there were excellent and fast. We got six drinks almost immediately at $20 each. Obviously not worth the price but at least they were solidly made. Some staff members went around in lingerie and sparklers but the energy was low. The risqué appeal didn't quite match the headliner so it seemed out of place. The speakers were at a decent volume, loud enough for everyone to hear but not blaring. The dance floor was packed and we could barely move so expect head popping and fist bumps as opposed to wide dance moves. The screen was clear regardless of angle and confetti was dropped occasionally throughout of the night. We were immediately kicked out after the last song and this time, the security were more forceful with pushing everyone through the exit. While NovaSD offered a fun alternative to clubbing, it was too expensive to return regularly. Unless I was dying to see main artist, I wouldn't attend given the lack of value. read more

My husband and I went to see Will Sparks, it was our second time going to Nova. The first time we went for Morten and it was soo packed, barely any room to stand on the dance floor. This time it was awesome, plenty of room, they have a lot of ceiling fans to keep you cool. The staff were all very nice, we didn't have any issues. $7 for a 12oz can of Modelo is expensive but to be expected at a nightclub. We didn't get any food, but I posted a picture of the menu. I like Nova because although they have a dress code, the vibe isn't dressy. I wore jeans and tennis shoes, LOVE being comfortable at the club.
