Big. Long. Sigh…read more This review PAINS me because I had such high expectations and wasn't prepared for what I received. Although all hopes aren't lost for this location, it's going to take a little while before I give them another chance. I follow a quite large figure in the food reviewing community and he visited the Pappas Seafood Center. This location has been here for about a year. I didn't rush to go, but as soon as I saw this person's very highly rated review with delicious photos to match, I knew what I was going to eat for dinner. I had a taste for seafood and when I saw the seafood eggrolls on the reviewer's page, they looked so fresh and crispy. Not overtly so. But they looked good. So, that's what I decided to get, along with a side of hush puppies. To note: this is not a sit down restaurant. It's a carry-out and I believe a distribution center. It's a rather large building, so I'm assuming that they make and ship crab cakes and other items, while also accommodating walk-in customers. I called my order in. The person said it would be 20 minutes. I arrived a bit early, so I waited in my car for a bit. There's no where to sit inside, so if you walked to this place, you'd just have to stand somewhere. Anyhoo, after twenty minutes, I walked in. The place looked clean and well lit. They have an attractive glass case that displayed cold items like salads and doubled eggs. The young lady at the counter told me it would be a few more minutes before my order was done. She was nice, so no complaints with customer service. My order soon came out and I headed home. As I drove home, I was super excited because the food honestly smelled good through the stapled paper bag! Keep in mind that I live 5 minutes from this place. When I sat down to eat, I took the contents out the bag. The first thing I took out was the hush puppies. They were in a cup, no big deal, BUT THEY WEREN'T HOT! Like, at all. Even further, some were quite raw on the inside. The batter was honestly good! I ended up eating just the crispy outer layers. I was intensely disappointed in those. Then...the egg rolls. When I opened the container, I saw two halved VERY browned eggrolls. They almost seemed as if they were pan fried as opposed to deep fried (some sides were burnt while other sides were normal). They came with two sauces, one was a mustard sauce, the other a sweet vinegary sauce. Neither was super amazing, but the mustard one was the better of the two. The stuffing inside consisted of a crab mixture and shrimp. It unfortunately did not taste fresh. More like something that was made a few days beforehand. Maybe it was because it was overcooked? The green onion was overpowering and the whole thing tasted like a sweet, burnt eggroll. I really tried to finish it. I ended up eating the filling, and discarded the roll wrapper, along with the raw batter from the hush puppies (pictures included). I spent about $21 dollars for this meal. I waited a few days before writing this review to make sure it wasn't based off of raw emotion alone, but a fair assessment of quality and value, which this meal lacked both. Pappas really does have great crab cakes and sides (look for my the Taylor Avenue review). Maybe it was an off day, but one off day can put off a customer for a good long while.

As a result, all the meat would pull out with each bite. And being over cooked it was too chewey. It was like trying to eat a piece of leather. You need to do better. Maybe we'll give you another chance, but maybe not. We work too hard for our money to be met with food that no one in the family enjoys or likes to eat. I threw half of my sandwich away.

There are three sauces to choose from, or you can have them mix them. I went for a mix of all three, but kinda wish that I had passed on the cajun seasoning. I didn't really like that. Neither did Jeremy. And then you pick your spice level. I got medium, but it wasn't spicy at all. I'm fine with that. I didn't get a side dish, but others got cole slaw and gumbo - both got the thumbs up. I feel like a failure because I couldn't finish my meal. I actually left behind two snow crab legs. My belly was just too full. SO many shrimps!! Jeremy was the only one who got a second serving. I left the restaurant incredibly satisfied, with melted butter up to my elbows, and crab in my hair. We had so much fun. We were allowed to take or dessert home. I introduced my cat to cheesecake, and I think he discovered his new favorite food. I would recommend.

Located on a strip with other surrounding stores it had plenty of parking. It's BYOB since they don't have the bar set up so fountain drinks on hand to order. I got an order of the oysters for an appetizer I asked where they were from and got they were from a place called local.... They were totally fresh but didn't have any taste pretty much like water. We ordered our boils I got snow crab, crawfish and head on shrimp which were fine with all the sauces mixed and hot but the meal had really no heat or real seasoning at all. The boils had minimal sauce that barely coated the bottom of the bag. Tee was great didn't come when we had a mouthful of seafood so I was grateful. I'm sure the karaoke is everything they've got a cute little stage and sound system set up so I might come back for that. No frills, just good food. The young ladies working the counter are always really nice too. I was introduced to Richard's during covid and they quickly became one of my favorites for a good fish sandwich. I typically go with the small Icedock Sandwich meal because the original size with 2 pieces of fish is huge, but great for the price. American cheese, tartar sauce, a well seasoned piece of fried fish, and a soft roll... I'm sold! And the piping hot fries are some of the best. As a french fanatic, I know. I recently tried their Half & Half soup (half crab soup, half cream of crab) and it was delicious. Good chunks of tender crab meat and that creamy, tomatoe soup base blend was quite tasty. Although I'm partial to Richard's fish sandwich, I'm going to give some other menu items a try next time, because I'm sure it will be well worth it.

The collard greens were fresh and you could tell they were slow simmered because the savory and smoky flavor was cooked into the greens. The macaroni and cheese was creamy and cheesy with hints of sharp cheddar. I'd never had snakehead fish, but it won't be my last time! The fish was fried golden, crispy, seasoned and meaty...I can imagine it makes an awesome fish sandwich! The pieces were big enough for my 2 teenaged daughters and myself to eat and have some leftover. The jumbo fried shrimp were also crispy but not over cooked!! They were seasoned and came with a tasty lil sauce. The wings were not too big nor were they too small. They were party wings, but they were crispy and did well the next day being reheated. They offer flavored wings (I think a bourbon bbq and Hennessy), but I wanted a plain fried wing and they were just as delicious as everything else. As odd as it may sound, the potato salad took the show for me! A wise woman once told me that if the potato salad is good, then it's highly likely that all of the food is good...the potato salad had the flavor, creaminess, texture, perfectly sized potato cubes blended with the other ingredients. Potato salad is one of my favorite dishes that I am just learning to make decently. Most restaurants buy their potato salad and you can tell! Not here, I think they have someone's grandmother back there with some cast iron pots and that old school tupperware that was extra thick!! In addition to going about 25 mins out my way while my food sat there, my ride home was about another 20-25 mins...my food was still fresh and did well being reheated when I went back for 2nds and the next day. My daughter who is a cake fanatic said it was a good cake and enjoyed it. The owner and his son have a great thing going on here. Very rarely do I get to have an experience where the food is organically good, I don't have to add seasoning and they are consistent! The prices aren't bad at all and the food is fresh and of quality. In addition to it all, the customer service, helpfulness and appreciation made me want to scream from the rooftops how awesome they are. I posted a video of my food and several people I know made a visit, they all had nothing but good things to share and can't wait to go back. That makes me happy because my credibility means a lot to me if/when I make recommendations. It mean't so much to me that I came out of Yelp reviewer retirement just to give this small family owned business their props.
