By virtue of its location alone, we usually end up seeing movies at Oak Tree Cinemas. But if I had my way, I'd never, ever go to that theater again.
What's that expression? I think President Bush said it best, "Fool me once, shame on --- shame on you. Fool me --- you can't get fooled again." Yeah, something like that, except we were fooled at Oak Tree a whopping three times, and there's that other expression, third time's a charm? Not so much.
See, there was that time when we were in the middle of watching "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," laughing our asses off, when at the pivotal point in the movie, when Steve Carell was about to ask out the eBay chick, the screen went black and the lights came on. What the ... ? We turned around and saw the technician in the booth, scrambling to fix the movie. A good 20 minutes passed before theater management came in and said the movie was broken. They did, however, give us passes to come back, which we used to watch the same movie. But still. Annoying.
Then there was that other time when we went to see "Walk the Line." I think I captured the experience best in a commentary I wrote for another review site, entitled "Why Going to the Movies Sucks So Bad," which can be found here:

The gist of it is that we were subjected to sitting next to a dirty, stinking drunkard who kept interrupting the movie, that even when nearby moviegoers complained, theater management did nothing but ask him to remove his backpack and plastic water bottle filled with alcohol from out of the center aisle. Sitting in close proximity to this buffoon completely marred my experience, which will now forever be associated with Joaquin Phoenix. And that makes me sad.
Thirdly, we went there to see "Lady in the Water" with the lovely Jasmine M. We're both huge M. Night Shyamalan fans, so needless to say, we were really excited to see his new movie. Except that we didn't end up seeing all of that one, either! Again, with the black screen and lights coming on. This time, though, the entire theater had to be evacuated. Once outside, theater management gave no explanation other than a partial power failure. Even though the lights were all on and there were cops inside. Suspect! Again, we got passes to come back, which we didn't end up using to see the end of the movie, because truly, it sucked and I couldn't care less about what happened in the end. Perhaps the theater was doing us a favor that time.
Three issues at the same theater in less than a year is problematic, especially when we've never had a problem at any other local theater. I wish I could say we'll never be back, but parking is free and they're part of the AMC family, which means $5-before-noon movies on weekends, so I think they've got a hold on us. Damn them! read more
