This restaurant has been our favourite for many years. We've been to this restaurant a few times since the new owners took over. We were there last night and the food still tastes great however the schnitzel which is what I order most often is less than half the size it use to be. Very disappointing. read more

Amadeus is a cozy large venue with a front seated area and in the back further seating and potentially more seating outside. I was here with a German colleague who thought the portions and flavor was accurate. The service was quick and the food came out in a reasonable time 20-25 min from ordering. I got the Pork Schnitzel with soup and added on the spatzle (more the size of a Knoepfle, or so I was told by the German Xp). It was a good portion size and the taste was great. Everything was moist or well covered with gravy. The front of the restaurant that we were seated was Mozart themed with classical music playing in the background. This is a great local staple and would be back again next time I am in the city for work. read more

The food here was exactly what you'd expect of a German restaurant. We had a combination of schnitzels and a sausage between the 3 of us and everyone was quite happy with the meal. The only negative I can say is the spätzle was kinda bland with little to no seasoning but that isn't unusual in itself. The waitress did an excellent job and even at the end when my daughter was asking her what certain knife/fork arrangements meant she knew them all :) When you first come in the place seems extremely tiny but there's a whole back section as well. Lots of Mozart around the room as you can expect from the name. They have some delicious German beers on tap and even one German craft I didn't expect to find in Canada. I have pictures of the beers but forgot to get food pictures this time around. If I end up back in Kingston I'd definitely go again. read more

First few days that patio dining are allowed to be open again now in Ontario after this latest Covid lock down things are still closing early. We had called the restaurant and were told there were spots and to come along. When we got there we found out they were supposed to be closing in 15 minutes. BUT they seated us and told us no problem the kitchen hasn't closed yet so we will take your order. Now this is a German family receipt based restaurant that had been recommended to us by locals. I'm sorry I can't remember or spell exactly what I had but everything was very good. I had one of the many schnitzels. Yummy side of sourkraught. My husband had the chicken cordon blu and throughly enjoyed it. The have a lovely hidden patio in a courtyard at the back of the restaurant. Thank you Amadeus for feeding us. read more

Came back here during a one week trip to Kingston for a graduation ceremony. Had fond memories of this place from 10 years ago when I did my undergrad, but it took 1.5 hours for the food to arrive at our table. I am hoping they improve in the future, because this place used to be (and likely still is) an institution. read more

While I was looking for places to eat in Kingston, I stumbled across Amadeus Cafe on Yelp. There aren't any German/Austrian places near me so I knew I had to stop by. There isn't a private parking lot here so you'll have to find parking on your own. We wound up parking across from the hospital in the structure there which was a short walk away. When we walked in there were open tables and the waitress let us choose our own seats. The cafe is decorated with different photos of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at varying ages and his musical accomplishments. There's a biergarten in the back hallway so it's deceptively large. It was still a reasonable lunch hour so I decided to order the Open Faced Smoked Salmon Sandwich. Big slices of smoked salmon came on top of a sliced rosti, garnished with red onion. The slices of salmon were very generous - they folded over so it wasn't like they only just covered the potato. It also came with a herbed sour cream and lemon for tasting. It was great that each bite you could appreciate a different aspect of the dish whether it was the brightness from the lemon or something a little more tangy with the sauce. One thing that surprised me was how refreshing the carrot slaw was. I'm really not a fan of vegetables but I could have eaten that salad every day. I wasn't sure if I'd be full but it was a good portion for lunch. I tried a bit of my boyfriend's Chicken Paprikasch as well. The chicken was tender and juicy and had a nice grill flavor. The paprika sauce was really interesting as well since it was the star of it. The spatzle was pretty addictive and I was kind of wishing I ordered something that had that as well. read more

I had the pleasure of visiting Amadeus during Oktoberfest. Their special menu included some inspired specials, such as the Munchen Schnitzel (a pork schnitzel stuffed with liverwurst and sauerkraut) and a schnapps-laced apple crumble. They had some beer specials too, but I generally stick to wine, and I didn't explore them. I ordered the Munchen Schnitzel, and my two dining companions ordered schnitzels as well. I wasn't sure what to expect from the schnitzel - the word "liverwurst" is so unappealing, and I had to remind myself that if the description had read "pate" instead, then I would have ordered it instantly. Anyway, it was a wonderful dish, like homestyle cooking, except that I'm never going to make a liverwurst and sauerkraut stuffed schitzel at home. I have visited Amadeus Cafe many times when passing through Kingston. The quality is consistent and the quantity is amazing! I added an extra star this time, because I finally noticed the intriguing vegeterian menu. Next time, I am definitely trying Tofu schnitzel! I am a huge fan of fried tofu. Amadeus is consistently, reliably good. In a city where it can be difficult to get a table without a reservation, Amadeus is generally not too crowded. Highly recommended if you are looking for a reliably tasty meal. read more

If we included service time in this review, this would be a 2. We waited over 40 minutes. We ordered the Jager schnitzel and the Zigeuner schnitzel. Each come with soup or salad. The soup was okay but super heavy. The salad was actually the best thing we had all night. The dressing was so yum and the potatoes were amazing! Get the salad, not the soup. The schnitzels were disappointing. Both were soggy, having sat in the sauce for too long. The pork was perfectly cooked though. The spatzle was delicious and the perfect texture but it was room temperature! The Jager mushroom sauce was delicious, but the Zigeuner sauce just tasted like ketchup instead of paprika. The portions are huge, and unless you're famished, you'll have leftovers for the next day. Overall, if we were to return, we might try the dinner for two platter. Everything wrong (soggy schnitzel, cold spatzle, long delays), could be tied to the large party that was there with us. read more

As out-of-towners, my husband and I were strolling along Princess Street, looking for a place to have dinner. We spotted Amadeus, and I meant to keep walking, since I assumed an Austrian/German restaurant wouldn't be vegetarian-friendly at all. But my husband stopped to look at the menu, and lo and behold, Amadeus offers tofu schnitzel! We sat down on the back patio, which was nice and peaceful, though I did have to shake seeds off my chair (and later my hair). I'm not drinking these days, but my husband got a refreshing grapefruit radler. I ordered the tofu zigeuner schnitzel, which has a red sauce with red bell peppers and onions, and my husband had the jager schnitzel (pork, since he's not a vegetarian). The schitznels come with your choice of soup or salad, and when I said I'd like the salad, our server gave me the heads up that the potato that normally comes with the salad is cooked in chicken broth. I wouldn't have thought to ask that, so I do appreciate that she pointed this out so I could ask for it to be omitted from my salad. The entree portions are huge. We were hungry, so we happily ate all of our salads and the complimentary bread, thinking we'd still be able to finish our main dishes, no problem. The tofu schnitzel itself is reasonable, two slices of breaded fried tofu, but with the spaetzle and carrots, I couldn't manage to clean my plate. Over on his side of the table, my husband also had to admit defeat. This was our last night in Kingston, so taking leftovers wasn't an option for us. Service was friendly, and again, I'm enormously grateful to our server for helping me avoid consuming chicken broth. While there are a few German places near where we live, none of them are as vegetarian-friendly as Amadeus, so I'm glad we tried this place when we were in Kingston. read more

One of Ktowns best kept patio secret! Great selection of German beer and one of the most amazing non alcoholic German wheat beers as well. Most non alcoholic beer is awful, but this was great. Although I also drink regular beer, the non alcoholic one was a great night out for my 16 yr old and I! For the food, if you aren't sure, get the shareable platter for two although it could probably feed 3-4 people! Nice friendly service. If you want patio, reserve. Excellent overall but a few things including the Inside decor that could use some updating. read more

The is the first place I've ever had a schnitzel, so I can't speak for its authenticy, but I enjoyed it regardless. Vegetables were also well seasoned and the soup was flavourful. Visited with a friend in April '17, largely based on Yelp reviews. The restaurant is narrow and not particularly attractively furnished, but "books and cover" eh? In short, the food is just fine. German cuisine isn't supposed to be spectacular, just filling and tasty. All boxes ticked there. The only real let down was the somewhat average service. There were only a couple of occupied tables, but it still took some minutes before we were seen to. Indeed, my "let's walk" clock had just started when our waitress approached. I went for the classic schnitzel mit kartoffolen and wasn't disappointed. Just not overwhelmed. Price was fine, but unless I get an uncontrollable urge to schnitzel in the future, I don't think I'll be paying a return visit any time soon. read more

Really excellent place for a nice simple straightforward meal. My wife had the mushroom soup with the chicken schnitzel and both were delicious. I had a really good Caesar salad (very nice slightly tart dressing, good sized croutons and real bacon bits) one of the best I've ever had. It could of had a bit of grated parmigiana to make it perfect. I tried the Schweitzer schnitzel (pork schnitzel covered with melted Swiss cheese) and absolutely loved the herbed potatoes! Large portions; I couldn't finish my salad and neither of us finished our schnitzel. Next time we'll order one salad and a schnitzel and split it. All washed down with an excellent Warsteiner pilsner. It was a lovely summer night so we sat outside on the patio. Nothing too fancy, but great tasting food and comfortable decor. read more

Goulash and sauerkraut anyone? This place is my all time favorite restaurant in Kingston for my German good craving. It's comfort food to me (because after all I am German :P ) I believe this is a family owned place but Im not to sure anymore since the last time I was there. I recommend the Goulash (which is like a beef stew over egg noodles). Delish! The restaurant is nice and warm home-y feel with table cloths. Staff is lovely and the food is really good if you ever want to try some dishes from back home. Incredible food professional service. My wife and I had dinner at Amadeus Cafe this evening and were blown away with some of the best German food we have had in a long time. My wife had the small portion of the chicken schnitzel with beef barley soup and I had the sole. The portions are very generous and the food came out hot. The sole was tender with a crispy breading which melted in your mouth. The potato pancakes are also crunch on the outside and a perfect consistency in the middle. This will be a restaurant that we will be returning to any time we are in Kingston. read more

I didn't have a clue what any of the food or beer offered would be like and the staff helped make great recommendations and were extremely friendly. We were the only people inside so it was like a private dining experience, although I would like to try their Biergarten (beer garden) sometime. Now, the best part for me was they had a full page in their menu dedicated to vegetarians. The tofu schnitzel was actually very good (I had the Schweizer one, which means Swiss in German). My wife and I are in town for vacation. I work for a German company, so German food is a favorite. The food here is very authentic. I would get the same Roast Pork in Heidelberg or Munich. Same for the Hungarian Goulash! We were very satisfied and stuffed. We went only for lunch, but the portions would fill anyone at any time. The secret is to not be influenced by the view of empty tables when you peer in the front window. The party is in the outside patio beer garden in the back out of sight. This is where a boisterous collection of locals celebrate the knock out menu spaetzels and snitzels. The servings are generous, the flavors perfect, and the pricing moderate, hence the gregarious crowd celebrating with a wide selection of German beers. Amadeus revived my faith in Canandian cuisine which seems to be suffering widely from small portions, poor quality and high prices. Would return to Amadeus at the drop of a hat. read more

Amadeus has both amazing food & beer! The schnitzel and sausage were tops, and as good as any I have had overseas. Also, the sauerkraut is excellent. There isn't a bad beer on offer, and when I was last there they even had a very good seasonal (Oktoberfest) beer on tap, just like you would expect to see in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. For us though, the best part is that there is something for everyone to eat. We have two very young children that both completely cleared their plates, and the oldest asked to come back ASAP - the youngest doesn't speak in sentences yet. Service is both friendly and efficient, and also made great suggestions for our kids. We are all looking forward to our next visit! read more

What a wonderful restaurant. We spend a day in kingston every year when we go on vacation to the cottage and I have been meaning, or should I say trying to convince the family, to go here for years. Well this was the year. We went to the back patio (biergarten) for our lunch which was roomy yet intimate. I had the rouladen, the wife had the Reuben sandwich and the crotch goblin had chicken schnitzel (disguised as chicken fingers). Great meal. Came with choice of soup or salad. Wonderful selection of German beers. My only regret was that I could not try more of the menu due to the large serving sizes. The dessert looked amazing but like I said, I had to tap out early. The food on the Queen's campus must be some of the worst of any university in the country. The restaurants around Queen's are equally terrible - bouillon powder covered fries at Stooley's, anyone? Took the family out for dinner. Having lived in Germany for 4 years, my expectations and standards were quite high.
