Firstly atmosphere is pretty good very nice general feelings about atmosphere, (gave one star for that) Smell: a lot of people in the reviews seem to say it's smells musty. When I went there was no bad smell at all (it actually had no smell). (Added another star for that) General food was okay nothing special but one thing that was not the best was the ribs and corn (the ribs were cold and not warm or ANYTHING, it seemed that it was microwaved as well as the corn and french fries, I also had the chicken pattie it smelled as if it was bought breaded and not made from scratch it also was microwaved. ( did not add stars for that) Food seemed overpriced for what it was. The staff was really nice actually no problems with staff at all. The waitresses even asked if I needed anything extra (which they should in general) added a star for that. If you want to eat some where where you are really hungry I don't recommend due to it being overpriced and not made well. read more

We arrived about 45-50 minutes before closing on a Saturday night over the Canada Day weekend. Despite the late hour, we were very well taken care of. The hostess and our server were both great, and the live country music was played at the perfect volume--we really appreciate being able to have a conversation without shouting across the table! We had planned to order the English pudding, but it was already sold out. In the end, we didn't regret it--we went with the baked Brie and the spinach dip instead, and both were absolutely delicious! If we could give this review less than one star we would! The fried chicken was just a chicken cutlet patty like you would get on a very cheap chicken burger. Ribs were fatty and cold. They tasted like they were just boiled and then some sauce sparingly applied to them. Fries were cold. Potatoes were watery. Fish was undercooked. We ate here a couple of years ago and the food was fantastic then. Not now!!!!! read more

Nice place to stop with friendly staff. Atmosphere is great and it's a nice cozy place to stop and sit down. Food tastes good but portions were small especially compared to the price. The meat pie was more of a stew as they were out of some ingredients and only contained a few pieces of meat. Will be back to try again based on atmosphere but was disappointed this trip. read more

Pooh and I came here for lunch after a long walk around the lake front of Gananoque. We both had the 1000 Islands stout and fish and chips. The stout was deep, dark and delicious. The fish had a light batter with plenty of Haddock inside. The tartar sauce was homemade as were the fries. Stopped by while drivine down the 401. The food was very delicious and just the right sized portions to fill us up for the drive home. The prices were on the high side, but it's post pandemic and we're seeing most restaurants raise prices, reduce portions, or redu e quality. I prefer they do the former rather than the latter. The ambiance is really charming, only their choice of music does not match the pub. What we heard was more fitting for an elevator or a mall. Would come back! read more

In Gananoque for the weekend, decided to try out this pub. Don't. It's cramped, incredibly loud with the live music (but the music WAS good, old decor, crowded and mismanaged and smells perpetually of fish. We had the steak, which was a mistake. The potatoes were cold. To the touch. The steaks were both ordered medium rare. Mine was rare, my partners was well done. They were tough, bordering on uneatable. The staff was great, very scattered. The owner, I think, was all over, very micro-managing and handsy with his exclusively female staff. Fresh off a weekend in Montreal, we stopped in Gananoque to refuel. The (cute) girl at the pump named The Old English Pub, and bangers and mash, what a solid suggestion. An oil painting of Winston Churchill over a fireplace greeted us as we entered this truly authentic English pub, replete with burgundy wallpaper and lamppost light fixtures. But let's talk fare. I ordered the liver, bacon and onions and was blown away. The lightly-breaded liver was cooked perfectly, served with mash, roast vegetables and a pile of crispy bacon. We also ordered a pot pie with a delicious crust and shepherds pie. We almost surrendered from the huge portions; it was a wonder our driver didn't fall asleep at the wheel after lunch -- the rest of us sure did. Obligatory Title Pun: Accept no PUBstitutes! Menu Readability: Laminated two-pager with oldstyle text and nuptual headings. And specials on a sandwich board outside. Need to mention: Lots of great beer on tap: Stella, Hoegarden, Hobgoblin, Flying Monkey, etc. Also, this place was packed at lunchtime on a holiday Monday. Impressive! The location: We went to this place in September, while staying at a B&B nearby. Up front: I used to work in a pub in Mayfair, London and I love the atmosphere of the traditional English pub which can be considered a British institution - it's one of a kind. The interior resembles that of an old English pub, with cosy booths wood paneling, a portrait of the man of the century, Sir Winston Churchill and American sports on cable and live music on some evenings. So the best of both worlds, right? All that would have been reason enough for my girlfriend and me to check this place out. Fortunately, the food is also very, very good! -- The menu: Features a broad range of traditional English pub food, from starters and nibbles to Fish and Chips and Burgers. The also had a couple of locally brewed beers on tab, which I had to order a pint of, of course. -- The service: The staff in this place is helpful, swift and kind. We spent two days in Gananoque and had dinner here twice. We are fuzzy with our food so you can tell, we really liked it here. Our waitress remembered us on the second evening, rushed to us, greeted us, cleared a table and even though the place was considerably full, she found time for some small talk, which is always great. -- The burger: Oh yeah! My bacon burger was spot on. It had regular and Canadian bacon on it and the patty was very juicy. The fries were very good as well but I found them not salty enough. However that might even be a bonus as you then can spice them to your own likening. I also helped myself to some vinegar of course which is a must if you like your fries (or chips) the ol' British way. My girlfriend is a vegetarian so they offer to swap any meat patty with a vegetarian one, much to her surprise. On the downside, they will charge you $2 extra. But hey, offering this kind of service is considerate, you gotta give them credit for that. The desert: Uh uuuhm. We chose the Apple Pecan Crumble with vanilla ice for dessert (on both evenings), and boy this thing just melts in your mouth. Very delicious, and overall highly recommended. read more

We stopped by for lunch during a brief visit to Gananoque and are happy we did. The restaurant's name is all you need to know: It's a smallish, dark, English-like pub offering a nice sampling of English and American dishes. We delighted in the crunchy, fresh fish 'n chips and a full American chicken sandwich, all very tasty. We particularly liked their beers; we weren't certain what to order, and our waitress came up with some smart regional suggestions, which proved outstanding. The service here was excellent, and, as mentioned, the staff seem to know their beers, always a big asset to a pub. We'd recommend a visit. read more

I've ate there, drank there and even worked there a while back. I love the atmosphere. Very authentic feeling pub. Almost like it was transplanted here from England with the owner. Maybe Darrin kept it in his back pocket on way over, who knows? The chef Chris Giogovaz (sp?) Is amazing and I've seen him at work. He's on point and can make your mouth water with a simple description. (Wait till you taste his food. And the current staff are fast, friendly and they know their stuff. Don't take it from me tho, stop in and say hi. I did yesterday. And for those that may say I'm biased have never worked in the industry. I haven't worked there in over a year and I was canned. Still love the place. That right there is the part of the review that tells you what's what. I still got love for em. I hate to knock two stars off my last review of this place. Especially because the food is really good. But we had an experience that made us not want to come back. Our waitress seemed to not care about us at all. After she brought our food, she left without asking if there's anything else we needed. (ketchup for fries, water or something) We could see her chatting away at the back of the restaurant, seemingly oblivious to the people she was supposed to be serving. Not noticing us attempting to wave her over. After a point, we just gave up. What makes it worse is that there were only two or three other tables, and there was another waitress who was properly making her rounds. It began as comical, but just became frustrating. 30 minutes had gone by, and we'd finished our meals (except our fries, still without ketchup, and our drinks still lacking a refill). She eventually came over to get our finished plates. Seriously, NO CHECKING IN FROM BRINGING THE MEALS TO TAKING THE MEALS AWAY. So frustrating. read more

First off, they are open today (Monday), yelp says they're closed. Secondly, when researching I found a menu online boasting 11 items all under $11. No such luck, a list of over a dozen different burgers (more than half the menu) the cheapest one was $21 ! ! I usually never get fish'n chips outside of a fish'n chip shop, but at $17 it was the cheapest thing on the menu and I'm not here on vacation, just working so that's what I ordered. It was okay, but it didn't taste like halibut maybe it was maybe it wasn't. Yeah, yeah covid an all but not one draft on tap that I recognized out of a short list of five. Was in the area on a Saturday evening a couple of weeks ago and stopped in based on the good reviews on Yelp and an experience a few years back. Walked in found a seat near the window. And waited, and waited. No server. Got up and found a menu myself. And waited and waited. No server showed up. The couple beside us had been given a menu but the server never returned to take their order. Both groups decided to leave. The couple beside us went to Moroni's across the street. We got in our car and carried on to Brockville. Now that summer is over perhaps their staff returned to school? Who knows, but the Old English Pub was a disappointing waste of time. read more

On our way back from Montreal after a jam-packed New Year's Ever, my parents and I were looking for a place to grab some good food, beer and be able to watch the World Juniors game. We didn't need a 40 ft. TV - just a small screen, ideally in colour (so we could tell the Red and White Canada apart from the White and Red Swiss). I Blackberry Yelp'd, and got this pub as a suggestion. What a wonderful choice it turned out to be. We arrived at around 5:15pm or so, just as business was starting to pick up. Two servers and one hostess handled all front-house duties with aplomb, politeness, humour and relative efficiency despite the fact they were balancing some 24+ tables. It was incredible. The food was incredible. I had the Steak and Ale Pie with caesar salad, and both were great. The caesar was especially worthy of mention. I prefer a more lemony dressing, and this had it. It was light and fresh, while still being creamy. A challenging combination. My mom had the liver and onions with mash and roasted vegetables and declared it to be perfectly cooked with great flavour. The prices were reasonable - bordering on 'cheap' - not belying the quality of the food. The decor was nice and English, and still felt brand new. Once this pub has a chance for some natural distressing of the furniture and gets that 'lived-in' pub feel, it'll be perfect. Great experience, great service, great food, great price... Best creme brûlée ever! My boyfriend and I came here expecting ok food, but with the limited choices here we decided to go. I was presently surprised by the polite and friendly staff. The food was amazing as well. My boyfriend had the English pub burger and I had the bangers and mash and finished of with the creme brûlée of the day which was a lemon cello And my boyfriend had the chocolate raspberry cheese cake which he wouldn't even give me a bight of, lol. All in all it was an amazing experience and I would recommend it to anyone! read more

Dog friendly, and a beautiful place to go sit and have a drink outside, but the staff was rather rude. We were asked to move from the back courtyard to the front when it closed, which is fine, but then they let almost all of the other groups stay. If there hadn't been any tables open in the front, since we had a dog with us we would have had to leave our unfinished drinks. There were some other issues as well, but not particularly willing to go back when I visit Albany again. read more

Looks like a typical English pub. The service was slow but friendly. Had soup of the day, potato and leek, it was great. The lamb sliders were very tasty. For main courses we are a burger, chicken club, and trout. All were very good. And for dessert tried the apple crumble and the toffee pudding. Both excellent.
