Chez Piggy was my first dinner for my birthday trip in Kingston. Many businesses in Kingston are downtown by the water. Super busy place in the summer, and there was a graduation going on downtown, so there was no street parking. Luckily, there was a parking garage nearby. At this point, I didn't know my way around well at all yet, but it was an easy walk from the parking garage and lots of people around, so area is definitely safe, although there are a lot of homeless downtown, which is shameful in Canada. They are, of course, not bothering anyone, but it was very sad to see. The location was cute. One walks through this little stone enclosure to get to the restaurant. It is not right on the street, adding to its charm. I didn't realize how much history and old-world charm Kingston offers, which was really nice. Chez Piggy was the same. The building is gorgeous. I did see that they offered an outdoor dining space too, which is not for me, especially during the heat-dome weather my birthday trip was serving up. This was a Thursday night, and I had no idea downtown would be as busy as it was, so I didn't even consider reservations would be necessary. The restaurant was packed, and I was asked if I had a reservation, but being a solo diner on all of my trips, it has NEVER been a problem being fit in somewhere, although I never appreciate being offered the bar right away anywhere because for an 50 something woman with RA, that option is often uncomfortable. They made a slight fuss about 'fitting me in,' but there was a small, two-seat table available, so I didn't understand the inconvenience to them? This place had a bad case of what I always refer to as "solo diner syndrome." One is treated with less care than others because they are dining alone. This happens to me with a small percentage of the dining experiences I have on trips...my biggest pet peeve. I don't order cheap and I tip well to make up for the missing person. The food here was very good. I was able to get gluten-free bread before the meal, which almost never happens, but there was a $5 surcharge (I got it as many other restaurants this trip with NO extra charge) and it was cold, which was hugely disappointing. It was dark brown and just okay...nice to have but not fantastic. My server did show up right away and took my order. My server was Karl. I ordered a Da Rico Nico drink... delicious but VERY small (don't the drinks get smaller and more expensive these days?) and $19. I also got the scallop dish. It had corn as a base with popcorn around the edge. It seemed like an odd ingredient choice but really worked. The dish was really good...however... Karl never came back and asked me if all was good. Never asked if I wanted another drink. In fact, he came back as I was getting ready to take my last bite and started picking up the plate before I fully confirmed I was done, but I was like...whatever. He didn't have much care about my service in my opinion. I felt very disappointed as that was the first dinner of my trip. He brought the bill right away, and I wanted to pay with my debit, but needed to transfer $ over from my savings to chequing account. He not only gave me the bill but shoved the debit machine in my face. I felt pressured and just paid with my credit card instead of taking my time to transfer the $ over. That dinner made me feel insignificant and pushed out, very rushed. Although the food was amazing because of the way they treat solo diners, I would not eat there again. But for parties of more than one, the decor and building are gorgeous and the food is very good, but if I'm paying $100 with tip to eat solo, the service should be equally as good as the food. If you want great scallops and fantastic service, Aqua Terra blows this place out of the water.

Cocktail (R&R) and complimentary bread

Beautiful rustic decor and loved the closed in patio area! Felt very European :) We had a couple cocktails that were well done. I ordered their Black, White, Green Scallops (5/5) and I LOVED the scallops, they were cooked perfectly and a nice size. The asparagus, micro greens, and black rice complimented the flavours well and the broth was to die for. Definitely soaked it all up with the complimentary house bread that's baked fresh every morning! My friend liked her Trout Thai Salad too, it was plentiful for the price!

Creamy Mushroom Gnocchi ($23)

I've been here for dinner quite a long time ago, remembered it was pretty decent (don't remember enough to review) so stopped by for lunch recently. Got the Creamy Mushroom Gnocchi ($23) as nothing else on the lunch menu really looked that appealing. It was decent honestly. I typically don't like pastas that overdo it with cheese, and gnocchi definitely falls under that category since its stuffed, but this was definitely one of the better gnocchi's I've tried. They put some root vegetable chips in there too which was surprisingly a nice touch. Overall pretty solid. I'd come back to Chez Piggy, but probably only for dinner since their lunch selection doesn't appeal to me as much.

Vietnamese spring rolls

Drove through Kingston on my way back to Toronto and decided to stop here for a late lunch. We were sat on the patio with our dog (glad they could accommodate the dog!). It was a large patio, comfortable, good ambience. I ordered the mussels, while my partner ordered the Korean fried chicken sandwich and Vietnamese spring rolls to share. I enjoyed the mussels, nothing too special but satisfying nonetheless. My partner said the chicken was underwhelming and that the bun was quite dry. The fries were not bad though! Surprisingly, the Vietnamese spring rolls were our favourite. It felt kind of out of place on the menu but it was actually quite delicious. Overall, a pretty good experience for some solid, comfort food with good ambience and service.

Lunch was excellent & great service. Beautiful patio. Reasonably priced - under $150 for 5 adults.

They have absolutely 100% scrumptious bread! And baked goodies. I love their dinner buns. They are made in this pull-a-part style and absolutely delicious to accompany soup, or toasted with butter, or, Pb&J, or cheese. Almost anything really, you can't go wrong. I was in Kingston recently and really wanted those dinner buns, unfortunately they didn't have them. Not on Sunday, not on Monday. I settled for their mini olive and rosemary dinner rolls. They were good too. Service here is pretty on point. There was a question I had asked the lady behind the counter and she came out from behind the counter to help answer any questions I had and serve me. She was really awesome! They have a catering menu, a cafe for brunch, they have fresh breads available and they do specialty cakes. They are totally the real deal. AND they sell Neal Brothers' cheese puffs. Havent been able to find these bad boys anywhere. They discontinued them in grocery retailers and health food stores don't seem to carry them. I'm in Toronto and havent been able to find them for a couple of years. They are a pretty penny, yet worth it for the sheer pleasure. Their store front is spacious and inviting. Certainly the place to be, everyone seemed to be walking in when I went. It is very well known. They can for sure accomodate a large amount of people. I would most definitely revisit when Im in the city next.

Ok, COVID doesn't help, as this is happening more frequently these days!!) Needing to recharge and regroup to figure out where we are going and make it to the hardware store, we were hungry and needed better sustenance than is usually provided in a coffee shop. After looking around a bit, we ended up on Kingston's Princess street, and chose to try this place out. First of all, it's deceiving from the outside: it looks way smaller than it really is, like a bakery outlet with a reasonable variety of baked goods on offer. However, there's a back portion where customers can eat in the store. Being that we're still getting used to the "new normal", we weren't ready to dine in, and wanted a seat outside. **Note: to get a seat on the patio, you actually have to go outside to find the hostess and request a table. It was a Sunday afternoon, and they were doing a booming business! But the wait was not long. We had a hard time choosing from the menu; there are a LOT of options! I was expecting a beautiful bakery selection but it was more sandwiches and other unusual, eclectic meals. We eventually chose a burger for hubby, and a shrimp sandwich for me, with a regular coffee for him and Café au lait for me. The Café was great, and even came with a wafer cookie. The wait was not long for our meals. OK, to be honest, I was not expecting to have my sinuses cleared out while I ate, but the food was so spicy to me, also with an after bite, that I was blowing my nose throughout the meal! Not a good look during COVID (sad face!) Worse, I picked up the great big sandwich to take a bite and a shrimp rolled off the top and fell to the ground! Very sad! These shrimps were lightly breaded and quite tasty! No wonder they gave me a fork and knife! Note to self: use cutlery! Here's the great part: one of the servers, went over and above, beyond the call of duty, and got me another shrimp!! It was so prettily laid out on a lettuce leaf, and quite hot - so fresh! Kudos for that!! I will have to bear this experience in mind for next time we visit Kingston, when we are looking for somewhere different to eat.

Through multiple vists, I've had the chance to try many of their menu items, including the fried chicken sandwich, duck poutine, fried chicken pieces, mac and cheese, and eggplant dip. The duck poutine was my personal favourite, but all the dishes are flavoured excellently and will certainly leave you satisfied. That being said, the brunch is on an entirely other level. Whatever you do, make sure you get their home fries. They're insanely crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They're the perfect encapsulation of what potatoes should taste like. Make it the side to your eggs benedict (my go-to order here), and you'll fuel yourself well for the day ahead. The brunch here rivals Toast and Jam for best in the city. Oh and be sure to end your brunch with the French Toast. This is a spot that every Kingstonian has to cross off their list, and every visitor needs to try if they can.
