Before I made my excursion to the wonderful city of Philadelphia, I knew that I wanted to visit a Spanish restaurant. I was craving a good ol' paella, and I happened to stumble upon Amada. I saw the paella in the shareable section on the menu, and I knew this was where I wanted to eat. I made a reservation for a Sunday evening at 8 PM with two other friends, and I was ready to satisfy my desires.
First and foremost, I was racing to my reservation as I had just finished a trip from New York. I was unsure if I was going to be on time for my reservation, and on top of that, my two friends missed their subway so they were going to be even later. I arrived to Amada at 8:15, expecting to see angry faces, but I was met with nothing but a welcoming presence. The hostess not only greeted me with a smile, but she even noticed my bags and offered to check them in for me and gave me a seat at the bar. Even though my tastebuds hadn't met a single ounce of food, I was already having a wonderful experience.
The interior of Amada is also excellent. The mood is instantly set when you walk into the restaurant as you walk around a dimly lit environment. The candles allow for a romantic/fancy vibe (whichever you prefer), and I would totally recommend anyone trying to impress a significant other to come here based on the ambiance alone.
When we ordered food, we made sure to mention that my friend had a nut allergy. As soon as we mentioned that fact, our server was hyper-attentive, making sure to mention if something was even in close proximity to a nut.
We started our evening with some basic charcuterie and tapas. Our first round of food consisted of the aged manchego, croquetas (which had nuts but we ordered anyways), pulpo, and calamar. The aged manchego was an excellent start to the evening, as the cheese was very fine and got my taste buds stirring from the get go. The croquetas were very interesting, as the sauce was slightly tangy/sour. I would've liked for the sauce to be a little more consistent and liquidy as opposed to having nuts in it, as the croquetas themselves were already crunchy. The pulpo and calamar were both delicious, and provided a chewy texture that the remaining dishes did not have. All in all, these all added to a great start to my dining experience, but I will say that it was a little expensive.
We then finished our night with the lobster paella, which was a specialty. The paella was spectacular, absolutely meeting my expectations. The saltiness of the rice was not too overbearing, and the seafood was incredibly fresh. I did have two complaints about the paella, however. The first complaint was that it was a little too liquidy for me. I personally like a slightly more dry paella (or at least a paella that isn't saucy), but this paella definitely had more liquid. The lobster was also very small, which I understand given the size of the pan, but I would've appreciated a bigger serving.
All in all, I still had a near-impeccable evening. The whole experience was pretty expensive, totaling to around 60 dollars per person. But because the service was so excellent and my Spanish cravings were satiated, I am still very happy to give Amada 5 stars. I'll certainly be recommending it to my friends. read more
