The flavors of their food has been consistently spot on and fresh, the service prompt and friendly, The decor is welcoming, clean, and calming. It was refreshing to discover they offer non-alcoholic cocktails as an option. Their recent collaboration with Chef Karla and her popular smash burgers for the evening menu was a smart move. Chef Karla has built a reputation in Kankakee at various venues, most recently at the now closed 8 One Five. My favorite sandwich is the Arch Enemy with its familiar but upscaled flavors of a popular fast food staple. She consistently comes up with off menu specialty sandwiches. If you aren't sure what to put on your burger order it "the Chef's way" and prepare to be satisfied

The service was very kind and prompt, and it was clear that the staff cared about our whole experience. Came here while visiting my sister, and she claimed this is their favorite local spot for both breakfast AND lunch/dinner! It certainly did not disappoint. They had about 5 specialty coffee drinks on the menu (all holiday themed). We got two (one peppermint and one gingerbread), and they were presented beautifully. For food we got a few breakfast sandwiches, European pancakes, a banana peanut butter toast, and some sides of bacon. All of it was VERY good and nearly all of it (including their bread) was scratch made. My favorite item was their croissant sandwich... if the croissants were homemade this place would easily have been a 5. All accounted for, I cannot wait to return for dinner. Thank you!

But my goodness, this might be one of the most unsanitary restaurants that I have been to. I often stop here to try and get some work done while I make the trek from Chicago to Central IL, but I'm having second thoughts about re-visiting. Let's get some of the tame stuff out of the way. The food here, average and over priced. Last visit I had their half sandwich and soup. The sandwich that I ordered honestly wasn't too bad, it had chicken and avocado and some peppers inside. It was warm and the flavors balanced well. My soup was the French onion soup, which was bland and lukewarm. It came with a side of bread which was cold and hard, so eating it was no easy feat, even while dipping it in the soup. The biggest price catastrophe went to the mango smoothie. Sure, the smoothie was decent, but $7 for half of what a Smoothie King offers is painful. The horrors of this Panera were in the bathroom. I went to wash my hands when I arrived, and there was a ring of mold growing on the handles of the sink. It wasn't just a small ring, it was growing upwards, meaning that it hadn't been addressed for quite some time. It was quite honestly as bad as I had ever seen it. I always say that a restaurant's bathroom is a big indicator to the general practice of the everything else, and I shutter to think what else goes on behind the scenes. I even had to use the bathroom at the end of my meal and just left instead of using that bathroom again. Visitors beware!

In the years since its demise, the building has housed several restaurants. Perhaps the most notorious replacement was Piggies(or something like that name). The owner in the 1980's painted the building pink as an act of defiance against the village. Later, the owner took it one step further and set fire to the building to gather Insurance proceeds. He was convicted of arson in local circuit court. Well, as I said, a few months ago, I decided to try the new restaurant occupying this classic downtown space on Broadway. I was relatively optimistic as I entered the restaurant with a friend. We selected a booth with an excellent view of the then operating dry cleaner across the street. I chose as my meal a basic breakfast staple: French toast... So, nothing fancy, like Eggs Benedict. When my French toast arrived, at first, I thought the waitress had brought the plate to the wrong table, because I did not really recognize the food on my plate as French toast. Well, when questioned, the waitress admitted that the plate she brought to my table was in fact the order I had placed. So, I settled in and began to eat the food on my plate. It resembled in some ways French toast, I suppose. But, in critical ways, related to texture and taste what I tried to eat was not French toast. Rather, it was somebody's idea of a concoction that built upon the concept of French toast. Perhaps that was a good artistic idea, but it did not satisfy my need for French toast. I have not been back.
