lowering my review to 1 star as I just saw my VSP was never refunded. This was back in October after I called 2X to have it refunded. I was told they would specifically refund it and it would take up to a month. read more

Alvernon Optical - Quick Google search - Optometrists Near Me - Tucson, Arizona

See all

The optometrist, a guy who's name I can not recall was the best ever. Very kind and uber competent. The gals up front were great as well. makes up for the very bad experience I had at Alvernon Optical on Sabino Canyon Rd about 4 years ago. I will always go back there from now on. read more

Well, after two years from my first review or which was a terrible one I thought things would change my wife and I got an exam excellent optometrist on Friday after a month of waiting for a phone call that the glasses were done since March 24 and we went April 24 to pick them up. Bottom line is the floor people have no customer service they are rude and really don't care. This is the second time it's happened and I don't know if they're just because of the first review this time because the first review was horrible as well just horrible. I would not recommend Alveron optical on Campbell. I did call Alon optical on fifth and Alvernon, which originally was my spot, but I chose them cause it was easier location. Miranda was very helpful. Listen to me and she will reach out to the manager at Campbell store, the rudeness of personnel does not sit well with me and my wife and this is the last time they got our business there can't say enough about the rudeness. They said we don't wanna hear about it. They could've give us an explanation of why it took a month to get glasses what they had told us two weeks at the end. They said they called but never left a voicemail and never reached out again. They just assumed one call. We did it all one call ever on optical on Campbell. Your personnel sucks. read more

Dr. Schulte is my eye doctor and is very informative and thorough in her exams. She performed eye test and explained everything that she was doing. I will always take my business to her. The staff is also very hands on and friendly and worked with me on eyeglass choices. Thank you Alvernon!!! read more

The doctor was amazing! I haven't had a prescription help me see that well ever and I've been wearing glasses since elementary school. The staff was friendly and everything was very professional. My only point off would be for lack of affordable options but wow definitely coming back! read more

They sell wonderful frames that other stores don't. But... I had a pair of glasses that needed new lenses because of a new Rx. I had to go there 6 times until I was finally able to get lenses that I could see with. I bought a new frame & so far I've had to go there 4 times, the 4th because I received an email saying the glasses were ready when they weren't. I still don't have the glasses. In both cases they had to re-do the lens even though I told them in advance what they needed to do. One time I had to wait for 50 minutes. Way overpriced for the poor service but if you want the frames... read more

Dr. Tetrault really saved my *ss. I was in town visiting my in-laws for Thanksgiving when I came down with a nasty case of conjunctivitis. He saw me without an appointment, over his lunch hour (!) and was kind enough to not only write me a prescription, but supply me with some extra contacts free of charge. Icing on the cake; I got a loving dressing down about my contact wearing habits. He immediately made me feel like a part of the family and rescued what could've otherwise been a botched holiday. Highly recommend him for all your vision needs! read more

Visited for a Contact Lens exam and was through the initial stages (Air Puff Test and focus test) very quickly and was attended to by Dr. Tetrault, who was very attentive and answered all of my questions about contact lenses (I have never worn them before). During this time, I was told that the office would receive trial lenses and we would determine what would be the best fit and I would undergo a tutorial to learn how to best wear them. I was then sent to another member of their office staff. Despite my indicating that I had never worn contacts before, I was repeatedly asked how large of a supply that I wanted, which showed me that either instructions weren't being read or the person assisting me didn't care. I paid my copay and left, being told I'd be given a call to schedule the tutorial and pickup. Flash forward about a week later (August 28th), when I received a text message indicating that my contacts were ready for pickup. However I had not received a call to set up my tutorial, so I reached out to the office. An extremely nice person picked up the phone and happily took a message but advised me that only one person at the office could do the tutorial for contacts and that I would get a call back. As of today, I haven't received a call back from the office. Understandably, they may be busy but if I don't receive a call back by Friday, I'll probably just go the YouTube route and take my chances. read more

I've been going to this location for glasses for years and they are always very friendly and give amazing customer service!

I was fitted for a new brand of contacts last week. Daily wear. After I left the office I've had scratching and redness so bad that I had to remove the right contact after an hour or two. I called to come in to see what's wrong as I can't see. The front office said, sorry booked for the next two days. I said.. I can't see. I said should I go to ER? She said.. I dunno.. do what you have to do. We are booked. I decided to put drops in and see if the pain and redness might go away. Hours later.... the office left a message saying an appointment opened up tomorrow and I should call back immediately as appointments fill quickly. They should have taking me in immediately. I'm going to make an appointment with a professional not Alvernon. By the by.. I been going to Alvernon for 15 years. Just the office and Dr's have changed. read more

Great optical one stop shopping. This place is the best place to get glasses. Ivan helped me with an adjustment. Great customer service.

I stopped in yesterday to have two pairs of glasses repaired (one paired simply needed adjusting, the other needed new nose pads). I didn't have to wait and the lady helping me - unfortunately, I didn't get her name - was very nice. I had never been to Alvernon Optical before but I was very pleased. I will go there to get my next glasses! read more

Just had an exam here. It was basically an exam to see what glasses I need, nothing relating to the health of my eyes except the standard glaucoma test. No dilation of my eyes. Had to ask for a macular check. I've only needed reading glasses since I had cataract surgery several years ago yet the doctor prescribed progressive lenses to use whenever I feel I need to see better. So now I need a real eye health exam. Total waste of my time. Won't go back. read more

be careful if you want Alvernon Optical to put lenses in your frames! I did that and they lost them. To their credit, they did pay for a replacement pair. read more

I went in for a routine eye exam. Covered 100% by insurance. The Optometrist that examined me coded it as an Opthalmic Medical exam and so insurance would not cover it. When I asked them to code it as a Routine Eye Exam, they refused. I would definitely go elsewhere! read more

I booked an appointment early (9:20 am) a couple of weeks back since I was looking to get my prescription for both glasses and contacts renewed. The doctor was pleasant and, having told the receptionist that I had to be at school at 10:00, was also super speedy. I even went a little early and they were able to get me started before the scheduled time. I was allowed to use my student insurance, and though the prices were not as low as I wanted (this is the insurance's fault though), they were still pretty reasonable. I would definitely use these guys again! And they are local to boot! And apparently they can make prescription dive masks and swim goggles. I don't know how useful this is in Tucson and I don't see how contact lenses wouldn't solve this problem, but hey, weirder things have happened. PS: To whoever posted the only existing photo for the Alvernon Optical so far: well done ;) read more

I recently broke my rimless glasses during a...er...passionate exploit after an amazing night with my GF and was left with few options for recourse. I contacted my primary optician to no avail. Luckily a quick google search and phone call brought me here. $8 and 15 minutes later my glasses went from utterly useless to better then new. They've EARNED my business from here on out. read more

THUMBS DOWN. Terrible staff, zero communication between them. Doctor cut my fitting appointment short because my fitting was taking too long. They forced an eye glasses ($600) when I still didn't have a prescription. The next visit (one week later) I brought the glasses back and they took it back to put in the correct prescription and then they lost my glasses and tried to say they have already given it back to me. After dealing with rude and unprofessional staff and three visits later I was finally recommend a special contact lens (what I originally went in for). Waited a whole month for the contacts just to get a call couple days before my appointment to hear them say they still have not even ordered my contacts and it will take another month for it to come in because they are a special kind. Totally a wast of copays and time. Don't recommend this place if you have a special eye condition. read more

I have been a patient here for over 10 years. I think Dr. Tetrault and his office manager, Tina are fabulous. But since this office got bought by whatever hellish corporation bought it, the service has gotten terrible. I called to make appt, got hung up on 4 times. Redirected to website, that had a notice that online appts were not working. Finally went to office. Was told my chart is missing and that they could not schedule appts (and had not been able to for 2 days) because the "system was down" . So my records are "missing", you cannot open a calendar and schedule and the new staff were useless, sarcastic and obviously did not care. I have referred people here for years, and even brought my Mom there. Very disappointing to see this happen to such a nice eye doctor. read more

had an eye exam bases on a recommendation. During the exam the doctor didn't seem to pay attention to what I had to say, he seemed more interested in talking about his guitar. I had good frames I had previously purchased and had them fill the prescription there, AND THEY BROKE THE FRAMES HAVING THE LENSES REPLACED. I WILL NEVER STEP INTO AN ALVERNON OPTICAL AGAIN IN ALL MY LIFE. read more

Came to what I thought would be an eye exam. They had me fill out paper work, do a contact lens test and that little air in the eye test. When it came to doing the exam that involved looking thru lenses to recite the letters on the wall part, I was refused service because i didn't know my prescription..... (isn't that why you go to an eye exam?) I was never given a better explanation as to why they needed my old prescription other than "that's how we do it here." When i set the appointment the day before I wasn't advised to bring any sort of documentation. From my own personal experience and other people I've asked about this interaction this is not standard procedure at ANY eye doctor. I find the "doctor" at Alvernon Optical to exhibit very poor customer service. I wanted to support a local business but I guess this isn't the one. read more

I've been to quite a few eye doctors over the years within a glasses store. After losing a long time favorite on the East side and struggling a few years to find one I liked, I found this one. I'll be back next year for my annual exam. read more

Clear as a bell!! Stopped here after having a difficult experience at Fashion Eye--they were half the price, very cool, easy to work with, twice as fast as turn around and eager to help. Wow--service. Go figure. I'm going back here to get my prescription filled next week. I had a great frame that I needed to make sunglasses from. They gave me options, showed me samples and helped me make a nice decision. I'm looking forward to my new glasses. Thanks!! read more

I made an appointment and drove to the location I was told about which was 40 miles from my house. When I got there I couldn't see where it was so I called them back and asked them to help me and they directed me to a completely different location another 10 miles away which meant that I was late because the representative had told me the wrong location. Then they told me they would work me in but when I got there the assistant told me that the doctor was very fussy and wouldn't tolerate someone being late even if it was their own fault which it was. They kept me there for over two hours telling me that they would work me in then at 4 o'clock they told me that if the next patient didn't show up they could work me in but if they did then they couldn't see me that day. I couldn't believe this and they would not even try to make this right. Then they tried to make me an appointment for the next day so it would be a total of 80 miles to get back there and based on the history who knows if they would've ever seen me that day either read more

I haven't received my glasses yet - I just went in for an exam and new frames today. But if they're right, and I am 99.9% sure they will be, I found the best eye doctor in the world in Dr. Tetrault. George, the manager, is also one of the very nicest people I've ever met. Like, really, really nice. To the point that I felt nervous speaking, lest I insult their delicate spirits. Dr. Tetrault was so patient and thorough - I feel like my last prescription was off, but not by much - so he went through some extra steps to determine how much my eyes have changed/how off the Rx was. Granted, it was only a little wrong, but now, if the glasses are perfect, I'll have better than 20/20. Frame selection a mite lacking but, I mean, how many eyeglass shapes are there? They do free adjustments and cleaning, like most optical shops I've been to, but they seem to do it with, um, glee? read more

I've gone to Dr. Tetrault for three years now for an annual exam. He is very kind and competent. I like him very much. This year, I decided to splurge on some frames I had seen in past years. The retail price for the frames and upgraded lenses was $1,247. I also had the lenses in my reading glasses updated in my old frames. The optician told me it could take two weeks because of COVID delays. Two and a half weeks later, late in the afternoon, I called and was told they were in. (Why couldn't they have called me?) I pick them up and only my reading glasses were ready. The same optician who sold me the new frames told me that she was off for the next two days, but as soon as she returned she would call me if they had come in, or she would find out where they were. Two days later, three weeks exactly after I bought the frames, no call. I then call and speak to Julie, the store manager. It's almost midday and she tells me she hadn't had a chance to deal with my order. I recounted how the optician had assured me she would call me the first thing that day--she didn't. Julie then proceeded to interrupt me and mansplain to me that I had to understand that they would deal with it whenever they would get around to it. I'm angry at this point and told Julie that the least they could do is call me first thing and let me know what was going on. Julie interrupts me again and in a condescending tone told me that they would follow up just as soon as they could. I then canceled the order. Julie interrupts AGAIN, and insists that they might arrive that day. I told her I didn't care, just cancel the order. She told me she would need my credit card number for the refund, but she didn't have time right then, would I call back. At this point, I'm thinking "Unbelievable!" I called back with the credit card number and ordered the same frames and lenses online (first time--but so easy) for $483. The shop is old and run-down and the selection of frames is meager at best. Needless to say, after the way I was treated, I won't be back. I'd rather spend $1,200 at a place that appreciates my business and will treat me with a modicum of respect. read more

I came to this location after a failed attempt to buy glasses at Family Vision Source. I decided to support local after doing some research. This location is rather small but I enjoyed the variety of glasses and sunglasses they had. Of course me being tired on a budget I was sequestered to a little wall display in the corner. It was $125 for frames and lenses. Sold! The gentleman helping me out, the only one on the sales floor, was very helpful. I tried on several pairs and he help me pick one. I can tell you it's rather hard to pick just one! He was very patient and I didn't feel like I was wasting his time or he was annoyed. I can't tell you how many salesmen I have talked to who get annoyed if you ask too many questions or take too long. It's a big pet peeve of mine. Anyway, I went on a Saturday and it was rather quiet. The girl at the counter was very nice and check out was easy. I got my glasses within a week, which made me very happy! They told me if I ever need my glasses adjusted, just to come in and it would be free. When I went back for my glasses, I met with a different woman. She helped fit my glasses and was very nice. Overall, a good experience all around. read more

Been a patient of Dr. Tetrault since 2004. He's compassionate, thorough, and professional. The long term staff are efficient & pleasant, especially the staff members who do the fittings. Good selection of frames. Lots of front door parking. Located in shopping center on corner of Campbell and Glenn. Their only flaw --as with all other Tucson eyeglass stores-- is the lack of contemporary frame styles found on the major online eye frame sellers. However, if you buy online, for a reasonable price they will make sure the Rx is correct & the fit is good. I like this place & the people. Every time I've made an appointment, they are ready for me. But if you need a quick frame adjustment, advice, or just want to browse, they will accommodate you. read more

I give Alvernon Optical 2 stars because of Dr. David Tetrualt. He does a great job checking my eyes. As for the optical part of getting glasses well that is another story. I had cataract surgery and prescription is way different now and I had to wait until my eyes healed before getting the glasses. I went in had the exam by Dr. Tetrualt and yeah my prescription is way way different. Because I now have Medicare I am able to get the 1st pair of glasses at a discounted price after cataract surgery. I looked around and found a pair I liked. I was told by the optician that because I was getting one of the cheapest pair of frames they would cost me nothing. I would still have to pay 20% for the lenses because they are progressives. I was told $56.00. I was then told that the office manager was out of town who knew all the codes and things for Medicare so the order for my new glasses would maybe not get put in until then. So, I let Thursday, Friday and most of Monday go by. I called to check to see if they had been able to get the order in. I really wanted to get my new prescription because I was getting headaches everyday due to the lenses being so wrong. I was told that the optician had worked on that day but he had already left (3:00pm). I called the next day around 11:00 am. I got the optician and he said he should have called me because he needed some more information to be able to get the order through with Medicare. I was told he would call me later that afternoon. I let him that I was a little disappointed that this is taking this long since I really needed my new prescription. I reminded him that by the next day it will have been a week and nothing has been done. I had gone to the place that I normally get my glasses after the exam on the Thurs. last week. It is a discount place and my progressive sunglasses and frames cost only $199.00. They only deal with making the glasses. I highly recommend Lessco. I told him I will probably get that prescription before they even get this order in. I decide the next day (one week now) to see if I might get better service that way. This time I got the office manager who was back. She told me that she had tried to call me twice and she got that my voice mail was not set up. Go thing I went in. She then told me that the optician was wrong about the price. It was now going to be $71.15. Plus she then asked me for the same information that the optician got from me just the day before. I really didn't mind that the price was a little different because it is still a better price being that I get Medicare to pay for a lot of it. She then proceeded to tell me that with covid it is taking about 2 weeks to get the glasses and she suggested it might take 3 weeks. She said that is the norm right now for any place. I let know that she was very wrong because sure enough at 10:00 this morning Lessco called and my sunglasses are ready to be picked up. So sorry for the long story but this is just very disappointing. This is why I have been using Lessco for over 20 years now. These place that sell glasses (frames) that are way over priced (check out review by Terry R. 10-27-2020 where he paid $1247.00) it outrageous. I will continue to go see Dr. Tetrault but I will never by my glasses from there again. Not even when I have the cataract removed from my other eye. Medicare covers that pair of glasses too. read more

I have been a happy patient of Dr. Tetrault since I was a kid - he is probably one of the nicest and most professional doctors I've ever been treated by! He's patient, unassuming, polite, and obviously genuinely cares about the service his patients receive. One interesting thing about him is that he actually used to be an intensive care nurse - so he comes from a very specialized medical background, and he noticeably internalizes any potential eye-related medical concerns his patients may have. I greatly appreciate the wonderful care I've received from him over the years, and will continue to be Dr. Tetrault's patient for many years to come! In addition to the great care from Dr. Tetrault, the office staff at the particular location are wonderful. I've read some of the negative reviews, and am frankly quite shocked - I don't think those people picked the correct location or something!! The staff are always very helpful and patient. This is by far the best location within Alvernon Optical. read more

I love this place! After years of going to a mall chain eye place (not knowing any better) I discovered Alvernon Opticals right around the corner. They take my insurance, the waits are short and the prices tons cheaper than the mall place. And best of all two years in a row going and my glasses are perfect. At the mall place I always had to go back because the prescription wasn't right. The dr. here really knows his stuff. And they take insurance for the exam! read more

I haven't lived in Tucson for well over 12 years (live in NYC) however, I come down quite frequently to visit with family. Despite not living here, I still come here for my eye exams! It's been three months since my initial eye exam and I still don't have a good prescription from this clinic on Campbell Ave. I came for an updated prescription because I just moved to Tucson and was a little overdue for a new pair of glasses. I get a new pair every year and a half, sometimes my Rx changes sometimes it doesn't. I chose this convenient location without a personal recommendation because I have rarely had problems getting a good prescription. I've worn glasses all my life. I told the doctor that I work full time online and that I play music and was interested in a dedicated pair of glasses for that, like my reading glasses. He told me before I start spending money, if my regular distance glasses work, to stick to that. Fine. He did a very basic exam with a computer, no dilation, the whole thing lasted maybe half a hour. Unusual considering my prescription is very strong but again, I wasn't overly worried. A month later when I picked up my glasses and tried them on in the clinic they felt "off" but I thought I just needed time to adjust. When I got home I could not read my computer screen, I could not focus, I was seeing double. Neither the distance or the reading glasses were good. I got an appointment to discuss this and they had me see the doctor again. The doctor said my Rx was different today than when I first came in and didn't know why. He said I would not be able to read my computer screen with my distance glasses, why would I think that? I reminded him that that was his advice despite me telling him that my work was full time online. He apologized profusely and reexamined my eyes, this time measuring three distances. When I picked up new my glasses again, I could not focus my eyes. One lens had the updated prescription, the other did not. Now I'm starting to have real doubts about this clinic and their lab. And I had to wait again. Yesterday I picked up my new distance glasses and my dedicated computer/piano glasses and while they seemed fine in the clinic I am still having a terrible time focusing at home and at work. Part of it might be that the fit needs to be adjusted so they sit better on my face -- they're pressing on my temples and nose bridge and seem higher/lower on one side. But I have a feeling there is something else "off" about the prescription or the measurements on the lenses themselves. I will go see them again next week to adjust the fit -- which should tell you that they didn't do that either when I picked them up. They just handed them to me and did not ask any questions or examine how they fit on me. I didn't think about that either because I was too worried trying to see if I'd be able to read with them, I asked them for a reading card to help me gauge the new prescription. I said I thought they were improved and thought they would work. They said nothing else to me, the tech just sat on the chair like a lump and that was that. I saw myself out. I've had my new glasses home for two days now and I cannot tolerate them. It's too hard to focus on the computer, even watching TV, there's never a time I'm not thinking about them or trying to adjust them and clean them to stop feeling like my eyeballs are going round in circles. I paid around $900 -- not an issue for me because I have a serious prescription and I know that costs $$$. But for all my trouble, apart from the first day when the staff was quite friendly, I have had to convince them that the Rx was off, that my eyes can't focus, that something was wrong, and their response every time has been that I don't know how glasses work. Insulting and exhausting. I'm writing this now because I don't have faith in their work or their lab. I am bracing myself to ask for my money back. In the time that I've been writing this review I've had to take off my glasses several times and now I'm wearing my old prescription -- which could use an update, however, it is balanced and does not pull my eyes in different directions. In all of my years of getting new glasses I've never had to adjust for more than a few hours to a new prescription. I don't think I will get through a whole work day with these new glasses, they are too stressful on my vision and I worry that they are damaging my eyes. For these reasons I do not recommend this clinic for anyone who has a serious prescription requiring high index lenses. I am always so grateful that my vision can be corrected at all and having to advocate for myself to this incredulous doctor (if your reading pair works why do you want new ones? you didn't say this before...) after enduring his curt unapologetic staff brought me to tears. It's not unreasonable to expect a good prescription that is not painful to adjust to. I don't know what will happen next week when I go back but irrespective of that outcome, this is the worst experience I've ever had with an optometrist and staff. A supremely disappointing experience and waste of time. ZERO stars. read more

Bring a book or make sure your phone is charged , because no matter what you need you'll end up waiting .

I spent approximately $550 for 2 frames and prescription lenses. That doesn't reflect a 30% discount that I received because I am a member of AARP. I found 2 of the staff, acting as if I was imposing on them when I asked questions or requested something. I wil NEVER go back there again. read more

Went to get an eye exam and new prescriptions for contacts and glasses. I was seen quickly, and I received a complete eye exam together with an extended meeting with the optician, who was very professional and friendly, and very complete in his explanations and recommendations. Not the cheapest service or glasses/lenses, but I am glad to pay a little more, knowing their service is top-notch. read more
