Their alterations are terrible & super off - I had to go back a couple of times because they did not stick to the original measurements. So yeah, you pay a lot of money for custom suit that doesn't even fit well. Their old stylist basically created the whole suit for me - I only picked the suit color. Turns out a few days before my wedding, I found out that their inside linings basically made my whole suit and pants see through! Yes, you can see the boxer and everything... When I asked online customer service to do alterations, they said no because it passed the 30 days warranty. So if you want to pay a lot of money for ill-fitted & see-through suits, do pay them a visit! read more

If you like getting f*cked over, this is the place for you. Otherwise, avoid this place. There are plenty of other GOOD local options for made-to-measure men's clothing in this price range. Or if you're adventurous and want to give them a try anyway, then start with a small order, like I did. I first placed an order for one (1) shirt, and it took three tries--over about one (1) YEAR--before I had a somewhat reasonable fitting m2m shirt. I then placed a slightly larger order for three (3) shirts, with further adjustments over my prior order--so that these three (3) shirts would fit properly (ha!). Instead, hilarity ensued over many, many iterations of reworks. Luckily the four (4) total shirts that I ordered--and have since donated to charity--didn't cost too much. Had I placed a larger order, I would have been more upset. Instead, I got a lesson that if you don't want this company to bend you over and have their way with you, it's best to not give them money in the first place--or start with small orders so you know into what mess you're getting. Long story short: don't buy from these shysters, but if you really have an itch to get f*cked over, start with purchasing one (1) made-to-measure shirt--so you know what kind of cheap merchandise and hellish customer service you'll get AFTER they get your payment. read more

UPDATE: Alton Lane has changed their shirts and in my opinion, hear new shirts are a poor version of their previous superior product. Few things: 1. Cuffs & Collars are now he same material as the shirt and are no longer stiff. This both feels and looks cheaper than previous shirts. 2. Just like their suits, the shirts are now made from a template and are not fully custom but rather semi-custom. Needless to say, I am now lookin for a new place to buy shirts. Too bad, Alton Lane used to have great products but with their new ways of making semi-custom suits & shirts based on a template, they have lost me as a customer. read more

Pretty disappointing overall. My experience at Alton Lane started really strong when I purchase a couple suits and sports coats. Recently however, there has been high staff turnover and customer service has fallen by the wayside. Specifically, the salespeople failed to return my phone call and emails after several attempts to purchase new items. And, because they have changed their manufacturing process, there are increased wait times for products. In summary, while the products may be fine, the overall customer service is lacking and not reminiscent of a true "bespoke" experience. read more

I visited Alton Lane in June of 2015 with three friends. Everyone purchased a suit - at least one guy purchased multiple suits. As of 10/23/15, two people have received their suits; one was in such bad shape it had to be taken to another tailor to fix. A friend and I are still waiting on our suits; more accurately, I am waiting on a suit that fits. They initially had me come in (2nd visit to showroom) to try on a suit that was so small, the jacket couldn't be buttoned and the trousers didn't reach my ankle. They promised me they would correct the issues and invited me to return for a second fitting (third trip to showroom). I agreed and returned some weeks later for a second fitting which was only marginally better. I asked that someone call me to see if the suit could be further altered or if a new suit would be required. After waiting for over four months for my suit, I asked that we find resolution with either a refund or a new suit by today, 10/23. No one called me back, requiring me to reach out to the main office earlier this week who assured me they would take immediate corrective action. They too failed to follow up and failed to return the subsequent calls I made. I finally got Carter on the phone today who told me they would only consider giving me a new suit but would not honor my request for a refund. His supervisor was unavailable, but he promised someone would call me back. My track record with returned calls from Alton Lane does not leave me feeling confident this will happen. Moreover, a new suit would require me to go back to the D.C. showroom for another fitting (4th visit) to the same group of people who have been unable to measure me for a suit on my three previous visit. It also entails an approximate six week lead time for the garment and at least one additional trip for another fitting. In short, DO NOT GIVE ALTON LANE YOUR BUSINESS. They are incompetent, poorly managed and refuse to provide basic customer service. At this price point, the customer care they provide is simply unacceptable. You would be better off literally going anywhere else; I've had better off the rack fits from bargain brands. Don't waste your time or your money with this second tier brand pretending to offer a nice product. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would. Alton Lane has been nothing but a consistent disappointment. Like many other reviewers here, they have serious difficulty following through on their promise of providing a custom suit that fits. Even though I am by far not the most difficult person to fit into a garment, I would have been better served by an off-the-rack suit and a skilled tailor. The crux of the issue is that the company continues to hire SALES PEOPLE not tailors/fit experts. The training they receive is not from a master tailor or someone who truly understands the anatomy of a suit, save for what you can glean from a GQ article. This leads to massive incompetence in terms of getting the fit right in the first place, and additionally fixing any mistakes once the garments come in (and they WILL come in needing some sort of alteration). Frankly, inexcusable. Secondly, the company is remarkably disinterested in ensuring each customer is satisfied with their purchase. I recognize there are supply chain management limitations, but waiting over three months for a custom suit is unacceptable. This could also have been avoided by getting it right the first time. In addition to the issues listed above, Alton Lane fails miserably in their customization options. The suit fabric, lining, and interior piping can all be selected off of cards, which is fairly standard for this new breed of ecommerce-based made-to-measure companies. HOWEVER, this is where the customization options end. The boutonniere holes are not cut, there is no option for specific pockets (welt, patch, besom...), and other fairly common customization options. There is an up-charged option for a half-lining; it is beyond disingenuous to charge a customer to use less material (a butterfly lining is no more labor intensive for the tailor). The final breaking point is that if (after months of broken promises and sub-par solutions) you are still dissatisfied with the service and garments, there is no refund or recourse. None. You are simply stuck with an expensive mistake. In sum, the price, lack of truly custom options, and poor customer service makes Alton Lane a bottom-barrel option for men seeking formal clothing. I would recommend Nordstrom Rack before I would suggest that a colleague give these borderline crooks money. I wish I had never darkened their already-too-dark showroom and reconsidered my suiting options. read more

Easily the worst experience I've had with any retailer, let alone one that claims to produce high-end clothing. Where do I begin...I ordered a pair of pants online and went into the store to get my measurements. That portion was great. The person I dealt with was nice and he took my measurements for pants and shirt so I would be able to order online in the future. Eight weeks later and I had not receive my pants. I called Alton Lane and the person I spoke with told me that the order was just sitting there and nothing had been done. EIGHT WEEKS!! and nobody at the company felt it might be a good idea to contact either the store I went to or me personally. Prior to my phone call and discovery of this egregious error on there part I also ordered some shirts. I received the first shirt in the mail and it was not done the measurement they took. Needless to say I have no faith the second shirt I ordered will fit me properly. I contacted their customer service department again. I called three times and left two voice mails because nobody ever is available to answer the phone. I finally received an email from a customer service rep. I demanded a refund and they refuse. Their response was for me to go in for a second measurement which is a burden on me because I have to make an appointment to get into the store. And a $120 credit. That might seem good except I have no faith they can make or produce anything that fits. Not to mention that $120 isn't really enough to buy one pair of pants or two shirts so using it will require more money out of my pocket. Oh, and it will take another two months to fix my shirts. So, if you are keeping score, that will be four months and no pants and no shirts. Do your self a favor and buy your clothes off the rack at any store and take them to your local tailor to have them properly fitted. 2-star review because the suit was poorly made, did not fit upon arrival, still did not fit after alterations, and because the customer service and communication before and after was poor. You'd do better going with off the rack, or finding a tailor that does not outsource the cut and sew to Asia. Spent $1,555 for a custom suit with Dormeuil fabric. Took about 6 weeks to come in, a week to schedule alterations, 10 days for alterations. After 8 weeks, I still don't have a suit I can wear. Good thing I didn't need it for a special occasion, because I would have been fuccccc....d. They blamed the employee who initially measured me, offered to remake the jacket in 3 weeks. And for my trouble ( the 5 week delay and hours wasted)? A $375 credit toward the retail cost of future purchases; so basically they offered to give up some of their future profit (or about 2 shirts) if I want to go through another lousy experience. Not exactly Nordstrom eh? Their communication process is also excruciating; they say they will call, but they don't. It's hard to reach a real person because they route calls through NYC. So why not 1-star? Because they did do 2 things right - they offered me a full refund and they personally dropped off the suit to my house to apologize for the delays after the first round of alterations. I appreciated the effort. I also thought the guys working there were nice enough...nothing personal. I am in the market for a few more suits and was hoping to find a tailor I loved to consolidate my business with. I have previously bought Jack Victor, Armani, and Theory off the rack ($800, $2,200 and $950) and they all were a better experience and better value. I also had a custom suit made at SuitSupply, and another from a tailor in Hong Kong. Although the suit wasn't as nice as AL (I selected a different fabric), the service was 20x better. The idea of AL is great, but they are having trouble executing; feels more like someone's MBA project than a real company. If you go to Saks, or Bergdorf and stay away from fused jackets, think you'll be happier. Just remember, the most expensive suit you own is the one you never wear. read more

I am currently on the fence with Alton Lane. I went to Alton Lane for my wedding suit. I figured that if I was going to own a custom made suit, now is the time. The fitting was fun, friendly and interesting. I thought the manager was informative and helpful. The issue has been with contacting them. I would have given 5 stars if they were easy to get in touch with. I received an email saying that my suit had arrived and that I would be contacted. It took two weeks for us to communicate when I could get in the office. I wrote 3 emails and called twice before I was given a time. The suit needed a few alterations. No biggie right? Well I am getting married in less than two weeks and was promised that I would hear back from them about my alterations. Not a peep from them. The real problem is that in order to reach the DC office you have to call NYC and speak to someone there. They are nice but they have to call DC to find out the situation. It just seems a bit unnecessary. I would love to give them an excellent 5 out of 5 but after my first visit, it seems like they don't care as much about my experience. Just a quick review here. We have a 10-person wedding party (I thought it was 7, but forgot about the ushers, so 10!). Decent appointment, nice guy, but no give at all on waiving the $150/suit rush fee, even if we're about to spend a little over $10k at the place when you count my tux. Guy didn't even offer to check with a manager, etc. So unfortunately a lot of money turned around and walked to Suit Supply. Doesn't make great business sense to me but hey, what do I know? The folks working there are very knowledgeable and helpful. In particular, Gregory has been very responsive and provided good guidance. I visited the Alton Lane showroom when it first opened, and was at first a bit skeptical. Now, I won't buy a shirt or suit from anywhere else. For a 30-yr old guy like me who pays attention to what he wears without going too overboard, Alton Lane provides the perfect mix of stylishness and value. Every guy reaches that point when he just needs to grow up and stop settling for department store suits and the places where their dad took them to get their first suit (we all have that Brooks Brothers suit we no longer wear). But, there are limited alternatives. Alton Lane fills that gap of providing amazing suits and shirts (both in terms of quality and fit) and providing an amazing experience. And, I get compliments from a variety of people (from active duty Sergeants to girls at happy hour). I like the fact that my suits have those little custom elements like my monogram, working buttons, and interior fabric colors that I chose. And, I like the contrasting fabric options for my shirts and how the shirts actually fit around my mid-section now. I'm a 6'3" guy with an athletic build but even slim fit shirts from other places don't fit how a shirt should fit. My one piece of advice is to make sure you take the time to talk through how you want your shirt to fit. I didn't do this my first time and ended up with a shirt that was a little off. That was fixed, and now my shirts come out perfect every time. One thing I admire about Alton Lane is that you get to develop a relationship with them. Other stores are revolving doors for salespeople or are pushing custom stuff that is so expensive that you only go in once every year or two. I visit Alton Lane every few months, and each time I get something, they get to know me better and I get to continue building out my closet in a very personalized way. The showroom manager listens to me, provides great advice, and will go the extra mile to make sure I'm a happy customer. The bourbon is a nice touch as well. Also, I'll add that of the shirts I have, my favorites are the nicer black label shirts (no surprise). I have a simple white oxford black label shirt with custom stitching and it's awesome - never seen another one like it. read more

No idea what's going on. Did they forget to put in my order and are now scrambling to figure out what to do? Did they go out of business? Are my clothes just sitting there? Do they not care? It's excellent. The spread is pretty plush. The decor is fantastic - the building is right in Dupont Circle, and the room is appointed with old woods, a bar, fine furniture, bright windows and great pieces of fashion. I really can't complement the service enough. Mackenzie was very helpful and honest about style. It may have been incidental, but the one on one approach was really nice - nothing felt rushed. She made me feel very comfortable. The suit has arrived and fits perfectly with no alterations. It's exactly what I wanted and I've already received many compliments on it. a few more thoughts: - The body scanner was pretty neat! - The shop itself feels exclusive - above Starbucks looking over Dupont, the location is perfect. I'm three floors up, standing on a bearskin rug, sipping a scotch neat and having my measurements taken. - The prices feel just about right for tailored suits. I can imagine paying nearly as much elsewhere for a suit of ambiguous quality, and having to run all over town to buy and get tailored. This was a really seamless experience, no pun intended. - If I was a guy going to get married, you bet your bottom dollar I'd rather go there, hang in the room for a few hours with the boys and a bottle of scotch and have everyone get measured, instead of renting a tux for half of what it'd cost to just own it outright. I think the experience and clothes are worthy of a five-star rating, but for Alton Lane's own edification, here are some suggestions: I'd say they could do better in terms of their design for web and paper materials. The photography feels a little stock. It's an exceptional experience; their presentation on the web and their paper could be excellent as well. I guess what I'm saying is that people's perception of the long-haired, stubbled, beautiful European man carrying an umbrella and heading up the marble steps has maybe been spoiled. I'm afraid people would associate it with on-the-rack brands, see the difference in price, and assume the difference in quality is negligible. Perhaps there is a way to maintain some of the touchstones people associate with men's fashion, while separating Alton from the pack. Another minor thing is that the place is slightly difficult to find. I like that there's no sign, but I had to call to be sure where I was going. read more

When I first heard that Alton Lane served scotch during their sessions I was sold! I stopped in after reading a review, and was very pleasantly surprised with the attention to detail of the showroom. Nick was the most helpful, and he showed me swatches that I really liked and I ordered two shirts. It took a few weeks, but when they came in one of them fit perfectly, and one needed some work. A few weeks later it was ready. I was really happy with the level of detail in the craftsmanship: thick collars and thicker cuffs, mother of pearl buttons, and great fabric. I will defiantly be back to order more! read more

I've had made-to-measure suits/shirts from other places and Alton Lane has given me the best all around experience. Some places overbook appointments and are strategic about having classic fabric/colors at a "premium" cost. Alton Lane does it right. Of course things won't always come out perfect, you need a fitting to get it right. With the problems I've had, they never skip a beat in getting it right. The customer service experience is what keeps me coming back. The price point is pretty good for a suit if you consider how well they take care of you. I'll pay more for service. I have ended the relationships at all my prior suit makers. Having a drink while doing business here helps too. read more

I created the most beautiful pair of pants ever and I am looking forward to creating many more pieces. Don't let the Yelp reviewers distract you from this gem. With the price of the items at Alton Lane it is good to have healthy skepticism. Thoughts such as: "Am I really getting high quality?" "Is this too much money for clothes?" "Aren't there better cheaper alternatives" are typical consumer thoughts. However, Jacob and the staff at Alton Lane are not your typical boutique. While they serve whiskey, have posters of Uncle Sam and dark wood throughout boutique the usual pretentiousness or retail intimidation is absent. Every decision I made was my decision. The best part about the experience is the education that comes along with an appointment. You will understand why certain fabrics are more expensive, why it takes longer for shipping, why it is important to have your slope taken. You will be making an informed decision and not one based on sales goals read more

I waited until the end of the process (receiving the credit for 120% of alterations) until I made this review. I was very very impressed with Alton Lane. My suit fit almost perfectly right out of the box (I stand a little weird apparently so one pant leg length has to be shorter than the other). This was what I was most worried about as I'd heard others had sleeves that were completely different. However, this was not my experience at all. The suit itself is great quality, so when combined with the great fit you have the highest confidence wearing this suit. I went to the showroom and Summer helped me pick my fabric and lining and took more measurements after the scanning. She was great! (The 1 hour appointment went fast..only enough time for one garment) I just sent them my tailoring receipt and they have already updated the account. Throughout the process, the customer service was very helpful and timely. And the suit arrived in 4 weeks even though it was my first order! If you are hesitating to buy from Alton Lane because of things you have heard (or that one website that unfavorably compares Alton Lane with Indochino and rambles about lacking a proper boutonniere hole) then don't any longer. Everything worked out and I am beyond pleased. I will certainly be going back to get suits (and blazers and shirts and pants) that fit absolutely perfectly and are extremely high quality. read more

I have now purchased three suits from Alton Lane and am very pleased. I'm a big guy with broad shoulders and a gut and rarely find reasonably priced suits that fit terribly too well with non-major alterations. It took about an hour to pick out the fabric, have a whiskey, the other details (you even pick the color of stitching on the inside), and the measurements. Eight weeks later (they told me when I ordered that it was busy and would take eight weeks) the suit arrived in the mail. It was nice, but needed some alterations to both the jacket and pants to be perfect. I used one of their recommended tailors, who I had never been to before, but the results were a perfect fitting suit with pretty reasonably high quality fabric, all for around $800 (you can get cheaper fabrics for less than $600). It was my most expensive suit, but it fits like a glove and looks so much nicer than my other suits. The only downside was that the alterations cost about $125, and instead of getting that money refunded, you get a credit for your next order (I think the credit is 120% of your cost). Because I loved the suit and had a sizable credit, in January I went back and ended up buying two more suits from their cheapest line, which is just under $600. When they came in I was a little disappointed - instead of being perfect like the first suit was post-alterations, they were just like the first suit was pre-alterations. I emailed them expressing my displeasure (after your first order come in, you get it altered and they record the changes, everything after that is supposed to fit very well right out of the box). They profusely apologized, made an appointment at the tailor, and went to the appointment so they could see the problems. Ten days later, they told me the suits were ready and asked me I come in to try them. They were perfect and I wasn't charged for any alterations. I feel strange giving a place that I had problems with five starts, but they went out of their way to make things right and the end result is two more perfectly fitting suits for which I got to pick every detail. Most of my other suits are from Jos A Bank, Macy's, or Nordstrom's, ranging in cost from $150 to $900, and the three I have from Alton Lane are hands down my favorites. Highly recommend. read more

Ron Ecton, the newly hired showroom director at Alton Lane, has done some great work closing the gap between concept and delivery for this company. I walked out of Alton Lane on Friday with a well-tailored, high-quality product. The staff took the time to tailor my suit to my exact specifications- they did an excellent job. While it took the company some time to work out its growing pains their dedication to customer service, personal attention and quality control has provided an excellent client relationship. 3.5 stars. Overall, really good experience. Keep in mind I've never been to a bespoke tailor so I don't have much to compare against. The best part of the experience was the fitting. The fitting room is situated in Dupont Circle in a relatively nondescript building. When you walk in its like entering Ralph Lauren's living room: mahogany, leather, stainless steel, and a freaking awesome FULL bar. Lined throughout the show rooms are racks of Alton Lane's exquisite clothing. They'll start you off with a drink, I chose scotch neat and my fiancée had a glass of champagne. Next choose the elements of your suit: style, fabric, color, lining, thread color, collar contrast color...the choices are almost endless. Don't let yourself get hung up on the tiny details like I did but have fun with it and don't be afraid to go with bold lining, etc. think Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Next you'll have your measurements taken with traditional tape. That measurement is supplemented with their digital body scanner. Be prepared to strip to your skivvies. I bought a white shirt and a killer suit for my wedding. It was delivered to my home 6 weeks after the fitting and looked solid. I had to have the pants shortened and a button on the shirt adjusted but everything else was perfect. Submit receipts for alterations and they'll refund 120% of the cost. All told my alterations cost $22, not bad. If you have $700, or more, to drop on a good suit and shirt then Alton Lane is an excellent experience and a pretty good product. read more

Just awful. Stay away. First appointment (for all the usual reasons: decent reviews, price point, nifty website, etc.) and it was jaw-droppingly bad. Weekend midday, place was empty (fine). The "showroom manager" Alex (title from his biz card) was cold and disinterested (why?). Not particularly bright, either. For instance, when I brought up pick stitching, he was stumped; I had to literally point out to him that EVERY jacket on EVERY mannequin in the place had pick stitching. No "oops" or acknowledgement, just a shrug. None of the highly-touted fancy-schmancy "3D Precision" computer body-scanning, either (that's been broken for awhile, he says). Vague responses regarding policies and delivery timeframe as well. He just gave me the heebie-jeebies. Exited as graciously as I could. Alex Keith - useless, at least for me. I'd venture a guess that this was atypical. But, holy crap, based on my experience, don't waste your time. read more

This is my first real yelp review and I'm so disappointed that it is a negative one. I was referred by a friend, and encouraged to visit Alton Lane to try my first bespoke piece of clothing.... The first visit went well, I was treated with respect and it seemed as though the staff really cared and wanted to give me the best experience possible which was very refreshing since I went far out of my way to visit.... The second visit was horrendous.... absolutely painful. After my long drive, I get to Alton Lane and again it starts well, I'm offered a drink and shown to the dressing room where my clothing is waiting. I'm so excited and can't wait or believe I'm about to put on my very first shirt made just for me.... This is when it all comes crashing down... THE SHIRT IS PINK.... I ordered a plain white shirt and when I notify the staff, their first reaction is to argue that the shirt is more purple than pink. Which shouldn't matter, pink or purple is still not white. Afterwards the staff completely forgets their manners, I never receive my drink, my girlfriend, whos this is her first time being there is left awkwardly while the staff is on their laptops checking to see how they could have messed up so badly. Then after they realize that they wrote down the incorrect cloth number due to similar looking examples, they then proceed to negotiate for me to pay for this shirt which is NOT what I ordered and had no desire to wear and has my initials on the cuff. At this point in order to not further embarrass my girlfriend I accept their discounted offer and they put in a new order for the shirt I had originally bought and again proceed to argue with me now about the cuffs.... As if Alton lane could have sold a pink/purple shirt made for me with my Initials to anyone else, now the staff was arguing that they got the cuffs correct and are just ordering the white version of the shirt I just paid for even though the type of cuffs made absolutely no price difference... So overall the shirt would've been great if the color was accurate to what I had ordered, but after a long drive going out of my way immediately after work, I went to Alton Lane expecting to have a great experience but was treated with disrespect and neglect. While I still recommend getting bespoke clothing, Alton Lane may not be your best option. read more

Don't do it. Do NOT do it. You will be very disappointed and you will have spent a fortune on something that you're not happy wearing. And they won't honor their commitment to make it right. Don't do it. I have never written a Yelp review before. In fact, I signed up for Yelp expressly for the purpose of posting this review and saving others a boatload of disappointment and angst. Don't do it. There are many other places that can make your custom clothing in Washington. I have no problem spending what it takes for exceptional clothing. I do have a problem spending quite a lot of money for something that is literally unwearable. Don't make this mistake. When we buy a product, especially an expensive one (like a single shirt for $297), we expect it to be right. Those of us who are proud of our attire and select it carefully especially want it to be right. This place does not do it right and, more importantly, won't do the right thing to make it right. When they committed to refund my money - but then didn't when I returned the shirt - I had to save others from this "all hype" place. After receiving an ad from Alton Lane in the mail, I decided to give them a try. I went online and booked an appointment, and immediately received an email confirmation. I was looking forward to seeing what they had to offer, or so I thought. I drove all the way over to Dupont Circle, found parking, walked several blocks to the store, and arrived right on time. The store is apparently located on the third floor of a building with a locked door and a call box that, at least in theory, should allow customers to enter the building and access the store. I used the call box to dial Alton Lane, but there was no answer. I tried again. And again. And again. Then I went on my phone and found their phone number and tried calling that way. No answer. I tried the call box again -- nothing. Let me tell how incredibly frustrating it was to be standing out there in the cold, unable to get into the store after I had booked that appointment time and they had confirmed the appointment in writing. What a unbelievable act of disrespect towards a would-be first time customer. Apparently, Alton Lane couldn't care less about wasting my time and they are perfectly willing to literally leave a customer out in the cold. Anyway, I'll never go back there and I encourage everyone reading this to avoid them, and their overpriced clothes, as well. We all deserve better. read more

After my initial review, Colin from Alton Lane responded by saying he would love the opportunity to make this up to me. I decided to send him the message below, and he hasn't responded since. Colin, I have seen that you wrote this for every bad review of Alton Lane. "If we could try to make this up to you, we would love the opportunity to turn your opinion of us around!" Is this a generic statement or something you genuinely stand for? Maybe somebody from Alton Lane can explain why my first shirt took 11 weeks. I would also like to know why I was fitted twice and both of my shirts were more than an inch too long on the sleeves. I also had a slight collar roll which I didn't notice on my first shirt, so now, I have two shirts with collar rolls. Isn't the photo imaging device supposed to take care of posture nuances? I purchased a custom suit from Alton Lane. The staff were very polite and the sales room is gorgeous. When the suit arrived, the coat needed substantial additional alterations, which were done quickly and at no expense to me. 9 months after I took delivery of the suit, the pants shred at the top of the right leg just above the inner thigh. I contacted Alton Lane, and the best they were willing to offer was 50% off a new pair, which would be $237.50. Just 9 months earlier, that suit cost me $1,500. This was the second most expensive suit (I've purchased 15 custom suits over the past four years) I have ever purchased. I've only had one other custom suit where I had this problem, and that suit was $449 (compared to the $1,500 price tag on the Alton Lane suit). The suit maker of the $449 suit immediately replaced the pants at no cost. Alton Lane puts on a professional, elegant face. But they disappoint on the customer service level. This product is absolutely not worth the money. There are a lot of other, less expensive options for custom suits in DC. Pursue those. read more

Do not spend money here. I bought a suit in March. It's been over three months and it's basically a mediocre fit that I would rather wear as a back up than a daily work outfit. The machine is supposed to supply a custom fit. You will receive a suit that requires multiple attempts to fix by a tailor. Do not let a human be replaced by a TSA body scanner. Please, if you're looking for a suit, just go to Nordstrom and have them take care of you. Better yet, go to Suit Supply, J Crew, or any other store that doesn't expect you walk out the door with an ill fitting suit. Honestly, I've had enough even spending another moment talking to anyone with this company. I'm being told my situation is "really rare." If that's the case, why are you doing nothing to fix it besides telling me to keep going back to the showroom? Why would I want to go to the middle man when I can go straight to a tailor? read more

Overpriced, marginal quality, absolute worst customer service I've ever had the misfortune of suffering.

While the Alton Lane showroom provides a decent first impression, the service and quality of the garments after leaving tells a more accurate story. I went to Alton Lane to purchase a custom suit. While the company advertises themselves as completely custom, the are more accurately made-to-measure. It is exceedingly difficult to get them to accommodate style choices beyond the basics (button color, single/double vent..), or there is an exorbitant charge. For instance, I was interested in a deconstructed blazer. I was told that this would be an additional $150. I wonder how they get away with charging people more money to do less work. The math just does not add up. The in-store service was normal for a custom shop. I selected my fabrics with some assistance from the manager, who was borderline pushy in his pitch. He conveniently forgot to mention the price for the garments, which varies from fabric to fabric. Alton Lane does sell fabrics from a few of the well renowned mills in Europe, but as I came to find out later, the production factories fail to match that quality. Getting measured was a bit of a chore, as there seemed to be a disconnect between the tailored fit I was in search of and the fit the manager intended to put me in. For reference, I am a taller and thinner guy, and am tired of wearing blousy dress shirts with sleeves that are too short. The "Alton Lane Way" is to put you into some pre-sized garments and make changes to a template based on those. If you do not fit into one of their sample garment, you may be out of luck as the salesmen do not seem to have any alternative way to accurately measure. The garments take "4-6 weeks" to make, which is industry standard. What is not standard is that I only received half of my suit. The store called me in to try on what I thought was a full suit but turned out to only be the pants. The trousers fit alright, but were not mind-blowingly exceptional, and in the less-than-seven times that I have worn them I've noticed some disappointing quality issues (keep in mind I have not altered or dry cleaned these pants yet). You also pay for the whole order up front, and upon further inquiry the company does not offer refunds, instead claiming to "work with you to get the perfect garment." If the local tailor cannot salvage the garment, you wait another 4-6 weeks to try again. I do not have the patience for this type of business model. What seems like a good idea at first glance turns out to be a half-baked plan. If all goes well, you walk away with a decent fit at an ok price, but there are far too many moving parts to produce an unimpressive garment to reasonably expect that you will have a good experience. My recommendation is to find a more established business with a more tested and refined process. Caveat Emptor. read more

So, this is somewhat of a hard review for me to write. I am going to give the staff three stars, but the overall company and experience zero stars. I'll start with the staff first. For the most part, they were friendly and helpful. I met with Ben in August for my initial suit fitting and he was initially friendly and helpful. When my suit arrived about 6 weeks later, and fit horribly, he was dismissive of my feedback and ended up being a no show when I came in to get refitted. Everyone else with the company has done a much better job trying to resolve my issues. On to the suit. As I mentioned, my fitting was in August. Some of the measurements were by hand, but most came from a virtual suit fitting machine. Based on how poorly the jacket fit when it arrived, I think Alton Lane would be better served by spending their money on a couple of expert fitters. My usual jacket size is a 45 but it arrived in a 37. I was unable to get my arms through the sleeves. At least the pants just needed a little tweaking to fit properly. When I came in for the corrections KC quickly realized I would need a new jacket, the current one was not recoverable. He retook my measurements and promised to expedite the order. It took another 8 weeks for the jacket. I would not call this expedited. Actually, I had to contact the company to send me the jacket because it had been so long. This second jacket arrived, and while the material is of great quality, the fit was still a problem. The sleeves were too short, one actually being at least a half inch shorter than the other, and the jacket length was off. At least it fit well through the shoulders... I had to go back in for another adjustment on January 16th. While I was told that people usually have one arm longer than the other, that does not explain why my jacket fit poorly. That difference would have been accounted for in the measurement, even though my arms are almost identical in length, and I would not have noticed the adjustment. It is now February 2nd and I am still waiting on my jacket. That makes it almost six months for a suit that, to date, has not fit. This has been a very frustrating experience. For what I paid, I could have gotten at least two suits from Nordstroms, Banana Republic, or Suit Supply five months ago. I really wanted to support a small and local company but I cannot justify going back. read more

Best suites in DC. Great atmosphere, selection and service. The showroom is exactly what you would want in a tailor. Scheduling an appointment and have such personalized service gives this a different feel than going to an "off the rack" store. I wasn't expecting to buy a suit on the spot, just wanted to see what the shop was like and whether I'd find anything interesting for an upcoming wedding. Jacob was happy to show me some different options and a beautiful blue sharkskin suit on display caught my eye. I decided it would be perfect. He helped with suggestions on the customization options, a perfect set of shoes to purchase separately, a shirt, tie, pocket square - everything. After about 45 minutes of measurements and discussion, I had ordered a suit with a substantial discount due to my customer reference and the upcoming labor day sale. When the suit was ready, I asked them to ship it to the Richmond location, as it was closer to my location and was easier to pick up. I was concerned that more alterations would be necessary, but none were - the suit was perfect when I put it on the first time. Small details have made me very happy with the purchase. The shirt's left wrist cuff, for example, has a slightly larger opening than the right one, because I wear my watch on my left wrist. The pants are perfectly contoured to match my legs with a perfect break. The fabric is beautiful. I am changing my initial review after a follow-up to my first order. The issues I experienced with the first suit were addressed very satisfactorily by the Alton Lane team, and the second and third suits were great when they arrived. The experience has been a little rocky, but ultimately good. .... After five suits now, I still have a few concerns: - Orders sometimes take way longer than expected - Suit construction is not perfectly consistent, though this is mitigated by their willingness to refit until it's right - Lighting in the DC showroom is terrible. There are no shades/covers on the bulbs, making the light extremely specular. This means that when you're looking at a swatch in the evening, it's either bathed in darkness or blinding direct light, making it very difficult to gauge the true color (which is extremely important when you're about to commit to a suit). Seriously AL, get some diffuse lighting. read more

I am a DC resident and had been traipsing up to NYC to visit Alton Lane's showroom there, so I was very excited that Alton Lane opened a showroom in Dupont Circle. First, the physical space is awesome. It's two floors above the Starbucks in that triangular building right on the Circle, and it's a unique space, beautifully decorated and appointed. It feels like a very comfortable men's club: leather chairs, flat screen TVs, a nice bar area, etc. The service is great. As a prior customer, I didn't need to get my measurements taken in the computerized measuring machine on my most recent visit, but I've done so in Manhattan and the experience is very cool. They take your measurements in the machine and then do some hand measurements to get the perfect fit. On this trip, I was looking for a suit and some business casual pants. Mackenzie in the showroom walked me through all the fabric, fit, and customization options, including colorful linings, lapel styling, monogramming, etc. About five weeks later, I received a suit that fits great and a pair of pants I would would wear to work every day if I could. I now own three suits, three shirts, a blazer, and a pair of pants from Alton Lane and each product I receive is better than the one before. I have been very happy with every product I've ordered from them, and their spectacular new Dupont showroom is worth the trip. read more

I just received my first suit from Alton Lane, and I only have good things to say. I usually buy my shirts and suits from bespoke tailors, most recently from a guy from hong kong who makes bi-annual trips to new york. He was pretty good, but Alton lane is better. This is for a few reasons: Better selection. You get some great, up-to-date color and fabric options at Alton lane, and there are different prices depending on what you choose. But the big differentiator for me is the willingness of Alton lane to add nice finishing touches like custom lining and stitching. Hong kong tailors will do these things, but you have to ask them, they don't have a good selection of options, and you don't know how they'll come back. Better service. Mackenzie is very knowledgable about different styles, and not afraid to help you choose between two different options. Unrushed, classy experience. The show room is nice, with leather chairs and you can have a bourbon while you try on clothes. Great product. The suit fit perfectly, and was exactly what I expected. This is what I was expecting, since mackenzie took so many measurements plus they have the body scanner. Good prices. I don't know why anyone would buy balloon shirts from brooks brothers when they could get custom shirts from Alton lane for a better price. read more
