If I could give zero stars I would. I went last year for a regular exam and cleaning. They were telling me crazy things like I needed "the bone under my tongue removed." and "Oh my husband's office is next door and he can do that for you." They also proceeded to tell me that I need about $2K of work (cavities, crowns.). Although having been a patient for a while, I knew in my bones that I was being scammed and they were lying to me. I went to a new dentist today (1 year later) who said I NEED NO WORK except a deep cleaning. While I waited in the waiting room, I also overheard calls of other patients leaving and an adult who was super angry that they did $3.5K worth of work on her 17 year old child without getting her permission. The writing is on the wall. This office will do anything to get money out of you for unnecessary work. read more

I visited this dentist for a cleaning. She informed me that I need a "deep cleaning" and the additional cost would be something like $350 . I agreed. When I go to checkout, the front desk lady informs me my bill for the day is actually $475 because the dentist had to do something additional, unbeknownst to me. I said I would not pay the $475 . The dentist got involved, and said I only owe $350 because that was the cost that was discussed with me. I paid the $350 . I am to go back for a follow-up visit a month later. When I call to confirm my follow-up visit, the front desk lady informs me I actually have a $200 outstanding balance from my last visit. I replied "Really ? I paid my outstanding balance while I was in the office." I asked her to produce documentation for my last visit and said I would need to see the total of what they are charging me and what my insurance covered. She condescendingly called me "Sweetie" and got quite aggressive with me over the phone. I ended up hanging up on her because she wouldn't let me finish what I was saying and kept interrupting me. This dentist office is aggressive and money-hungry. They took advantage of me and have been hounding me for extra money ever since. Beware. read more

The two stars are for my dental hygienist. I would give her more but I want my review to reflect upon the dentist. Dr. Eggleston's bedside manner was uncaring at best. She was even sitting at the front desk when I left and didn't say a word. I only switched dentists because my insurance changed. Dr. Eggleston has been my dentist for a few years now, and I recommend her to all of my friends (who have had similar experiences with her). First off, let me say this: Sometimes there is a bit of a wait for Dr. E. She takes as much time as necessary with every patient. If this is a concern for you, schedule your appointment for first of the day or first after lunch. I've also never had any problems with billing or insurance, but I've cleared everything before my visits, which is always a good idea. If you have concerns about this, her office staff will help you determine how much your visit will cost. Now here's why she's my dentist: 1. When was the last time a DENTIST cleaned your teeth? Not since I was in grade school have I seen a dentist in person for more than a few minutes at a time. It seems they pop in, poke around for a minute, tell you to floss more, then charge you four bazillion dollars. Not Dr. E. She conducts the cleaning and the exam herself. I think this probably gives her a better idea of what's going on with your teeth than one of the McDentists who shuttle in and out of the exam room like rock stars. 2. She always tells you exactly what's going on, and her assistants are all very friendly and helpful. 3. She is also very gentle and I've never had a problem with pain. The friends I've sent her direction also have had this experience. Some with severe phobias have had a calm, stress-free visit. 4. She also appreciates natural alternatives and less invasive solutions. She uses the composite fillings instead of amalgam, for example. Once, when we had originally scheduled a root canal, she changed it to a crown in the middle of the procedure. She discovered that my root was in good shape, and the root canal would have been unnecessary. Even though she would have made more money from doing the other procedure, she chose the health of my teeth over commerce. Hooray! They're moving offices now (as of 2/15/11), so check with their office if you're a new patient. Just schedule a cleaning and see if she's a good fit for you. read more

My family and I have been patients of Dr. Eggleston for 12 years and have received excellent care and service. Dr. Eggleston has a wonderful bedside manner and has a gentle touch. She cares about pain management and does a great job with anesthesia. Her cosmetic work is fabulous! I've had crowns, veneers and implants that all look great! Her front office gives us clear estimates as to what our insurance covers and what our out of pocket will be. She genuinely cares about oral health, and general health that may affect your oral health. I highly recommend this practice. read more

I've been seeing Dr. A. Eggleston for about 6 years now. I find her staff to be very friendly and sincere. Her hygienist is wonderful! She always has good advice for me on teeth maintenance and encourages me to stay on top of flossing since I'm having a lot of dental problems. I also like Dr. Eggleston because she doesn't admonish me for getting cavities and is always honest with me about treatment plan options. I believe she has a genuine interest in my dental health. Even though I now work a considerable distance from her office, I'm making that long drive because I get service that is terrific to expect. read more

I have been using Dr. Eggleston for almost a year. During this time I have found the dental care provided to be adequate. However, the office has missed appointments (yes, I confirmed with them the day before...only to arrive and be told they don't have me in the books...), and gotten the billing wrong on my account for 6 months and running. The invoiced me, I paid the invoice...they sent a receipt, and then they invoiced me again with a late fee. Honestly, it is far more trouble than it is worth to go to this dentist. I will be looking for a new dentist in Austin and have been disappointed with the service at this office. read more

I would never come back here again. I am still scarred from the trauma they gave me. I find it funny that the clinic emailed me for a review because it's been over 2 years since I left them. I have also not been to a dentist again because of what they did to me. All I wanted was my teeth cleaned. Dr Egg (female) said I was fine but Dr egg (male) mentioned that my teeth were pushing together and it needed to be pulled. I told them my history with dentist and how I had been scarred in the past and I was nervous about going under. They said a shot numbing is better and I wouldn't be put under. They did the medicine and came to test. The lady grabbed a clamp type thing and grasped my tooth and squeezed. I started crying because I could feel my took being crushed. She jokes that the medicine isn't hitting yet and gave me another dose. At this point my face is numb and the assistant tries again on the same tooth. I can literally feel her cracking my tooth and I'm sobbing because it's so scary. They tell me the tears are from the numbing medicine. I still argue that I can feel it and they just continued to pull and I could hear and feel every crack and pull until the tooth got ripped out and I gushed blood. I left feeling completely demolished and just traumatized. It's been almost 2 years and I still can't go to a dentist. I am utterly convinced there is not anyone for me. Maybe this is just my experience but I thought this clinic was rude and not very empathetic to my concerns. And I have to admit my child through college dentist gave me trauma too but dr. Egglestons clinic just nailed the coffin for me never trusting another dentist again. This is why I floss and brush religiously cus I never want to go to a dentist again. read more

I was a patient of this dentist for over almost 2 years; mainly because of the location of the office. I'm no expert, but the equipment looked like the same stuff my childhood dentist used 25 years ago. Cleanings seemed excessively painful for mediocre results. Appointments appear meaningless as I routinely waited over 30 minutes past my appointment time. They tried to X ray me every time I went in, which brings me to the story of what was the final straw: I waited and waited as usual. They wanted to X ray me, I said we just did X rays, no thank you, please proceed with the cleaning. A month later I get a bill for a cleaning, an exam, and X rays. My insurance paid for the X rays (which never happened) but denied my claim for everything else because it was my 3rd visit in the calendar year. I did not realize this...I had a reminder card sent to me to come in. I realized later that they were sending me reminder cards every 3 or 4 months! I went in to discuss the bill...I told them I would pay the bill, please don't send me to collections, but can we figure something out for the future? I was told, "don't worry...let me talk to the Doctor to see what we can do, but don't worry we wont send you to collections, I'll call you back this afternoon but we can more than likely take care of this the next time you come in." I never got a call back, and 10-14 days later I received a letter from a collection agency. I went in to ask them what happened. The lady who said not to worry that she would call me back said, "sometimes I get busy and forget to do things"...Nice. And sometimes you bill for things you never did too...My insurance company was very thankful when I alerted them of the fraudulent billing. Then the dentist informed me it was up to me to know how my insurance works and that I needed to pay my bill. Yes, this is true. It is ultimately my responsibility. But every dentist Ive ever been to has always at least let me know where I stood with my coverage. The Dr/Patient relationship should be just that, a mutually beneficial relationship, and I realize now I was nothing more than another "billable item" to this office. The bottom line is this: they try to do things to you that you don't need, you will always wait, the quality of work is average at best, and it is up to you to make sure they bill you, and your insurance, correctly. Because, "...sometimes you get busy and forget to do things..." Do yourself a favor and go to another dentist. read more

I heart her. She has the best "chair"-side manner. The best dentist I've ever had. I would recommend her in a heartbeat.

The impetus behind choosing this dentist was threefold: (1) the office is less than one block from my office; (2) it's on my dental plan; and (3) I was able to schedule an appointment for the following week. These are pretty compelling reasons off the bat, and so I was willing to submit to Dr. Eggleston even with a less-than-fabulous experience there. However, the experience turned out to be significantly better than at prior dentists for a number of reasons. First, everyone was extremely nice, yet didn't try to ask me about my life plans while they had a mirror and buzzing instruments down my throat. I appreciate that. I can't tell you how many times I've inadvertently promised to run off with the circus while in the dentist's chair: "So Leah, are you planning to perform with elephants after law school?" "ehg, ah erg [spit] hesas." "Wow, promise me you'll get me some free tickets!" Second, I got the impression that they actually knew what they were doing (always important, but not always present). Back in the backward Midwest, where I'm from, the dental hygienist is the one that cleans all the plaque off your teeth, whereas here, the dentist actually does it. Also, I have never been subjected to so many x-rays in one sitting in my life. That makes me feel like they are reviewing my tooth decay more thoroughly. Third, there's no bloody, painful plaque picking (woohoo). They have this new-fangled machine that does it without pain (though with a high-pitched squeal). Now, I can't quite give it five stars for a couple of reasons. First, It looks a tad sketchy from the outside, which is desirable in a bar and a taco stand, but not in a dentist. Inside was just fine. Second, Dr. Eggleston could have been a touch more communicative about my teeth, although I didn't have anything wrong with mine, so maybe there was nothing to communicate about. Third, I was not offered any movies to watch while my teeth were being cleaned. Maybe that's setting the bar high, but I once enjoyed most of Terminal while getting some fillings North Carolina, and my expectations have been raised ever since. Fourth, there was an unintroduced dental student hovering in the background, which was slightly unsettling. Finally, I was not admonished to floss more often. Not that I would, but it's comforting to know someone cares. At any rate, all the rest of the dentists on my plan were horribly reviewed, so Dr. Eggleston is a good choice. read more

I want to be clear that I have no reason not to think Dr. Eggleston is honorable. I like her; I think she does good work. I have always found her staff to be first-rate and she treats them with dignity. Five of my teeth had been pulled before I learned that Dr. Eggleston's husband makes his living as an oral surgeon, including implants for people whose teeth aren't all in their mouths anymore. If I had known that in advance, I would have seen someone for a 2nd opinion before any teeth were pulled. I think that is ordinary prudence. read more

Had a horrible experience at my last dentist and was in need of a good amount of corrective dental work. I found Dr. Eggleston through my insurance, and she was conveniently located and had less awful reviews than some of my other options. Pros: There is a decent amount of parking, both in the lot and on the street, which is nice for such a central location. I really liked my hygienist. She was friendly but not awkwardly chatty, and super nice when I was honest about having some anxiety. Dr. Eggleston did an amazing job on my 2 crowns, both cosmetically and pain wise. She seems genuinely committed to doing good work and making sure her patient is reasonably comfortable and satisfied with the result. Cons: They use an old school x-ray and it takes approximately forever to get a complete set. I'm assuming the oral surgeon next door is her husband, also a Dr. Eggleston, and she was pretty insistent that I should have my wisdom teeth removed. She cited all the potential problems they cause, and I explained mine came in 10 years ago and have never caused any. Previous (non surgeon) dentists told me it wasn't necessary and I'm not especially interested in surgery unless it is. I suspect the recommendation came from a business perspective as opposed to any real concern about my health. ***They screwed up my billing twice, and over charged me HUNDREDS of dollars for my procedures.***I brought in my insurance statements to correct the issue the first time, thinking it an honest mistake. They said they had the wrong fee schedule. But I was super frustrated and disappointed when it happened the second time. (Same thing, hundreds overcharged, I had to point out the error.) I was happy with Dr. Eggleston, but am very hesitant to go back not being able to trust their prices. My advice would be to keep a close eye on your insurance statements and compare every one to your bill from her office. read more

While it seems strange to "love" going to the dentist, my experience really was worth a 5-star rating. I've been a patient of Dr Eggleston's since her office was near the capitol, and with the new space on W 5th it feels like the atmosphere matches the quality of service that you receive. My hygienist is always friendly, explains what she's doing every step of the way, and checks in on comfort regularly. Dr Eggleston always takes her time, checking even the tiniest "sticky" spots, and I feel confident that my pearly whites are in good hands here. read more

I would never recommend. I went in for one appointment. They saw me for 5 minutes before recommending me to a dental surgeon. They incorrectly told me that my insurance provider was in network and have been hounding me to pay the balance ever since. Short Review: THE BEST !!! Long Review: I arrived in Austin one year ago and needed one new crown, one new filling, and a couple of old crowns and fillings replaced. I know! Too much time away from the dental office!!! I was referred to Dr. Althea Eggleston by my new primary care physician, and I am so happy that I was. From beginning to end, and without exception, every associate in Dr. Eggleston's office was highly professional, personable, and most important, well trained and accomplished in their particular field and service. This does not come by way of accident. This starts at the top by example, good management practices, and a strong value system. And that is exactly what Dr. Eggleston delivers. During the work I had done, the Lab had sent one crown that, frankly, I was OK with, but Dr. Eggleston did not want to use because she did not like the color match compared to my other teeth. This was a back molar that no one would ever see. But it was not acceptable to her. So she sent it back. A week later, the second crown came in, and that too was not acceptable to her. One week later again, the third crown came in and it was a perfect match! Understand -- each time this required her to set new appointments, go through all the preparatory procedures, use the appropriate instruments and medications to prepare me for the fit, fit the crown, and only then evaluate it for acceptance. And after doing all of that, she was willing to go through it again and yet again to make sure I had a color match that was acceptable to her...not just to me. AND - there were no additional costs charged for the repeat visits, which means that she absorbed those costs! This reflects the superior standards and integrity by which she conducts her profession. During my first visit, she noticed a small blood clot just under the surface of my lower lip. I told her it had been with me for years and posed no risk of a broader health problem. But she asked if I would like to have it looked at by her husband, Dr. Todd Eggleston, an oral surgeon who operated in the same building. I said sure! Even though this was not covered by my insurance, Dr. Todd Eggleston worked with me and in another appointment removed it at a very reasonable personal cost, and did a GREAT JOB making me look perfect! Overall, I am ecstatic that I found Dr. Althea Eggleston, and I would highly recommend that if you are looking for an excellent, caring dentist, with One Stop Shopping for all of your dental, cosmetic, and oral surgery needs, you RUN to her office and give her a shot.
