I'm a big fan of the doc and his team! They have been phenomenal each and every time my wife and I have visited. We go regularly (~6 months) for cleanings and checkups, and their staff helped us complete a short set of MTMs and recast nightguards. They have a modern day scheduling system (with email and/or text reminders if you're a fan of that), and we have been pleasantly surprised with no surprises! They've taken extra precautions during COVID-19, with temperature checks, mask wearing, and short questionnaires to ensure everyone is safe. Every visit has been personable, friendly, and efficient. We've never had to endure long lines or excessive bureaucracy that you might get at a significantly larger (or poorly run) dentist practice. If you're in the Austin area, I'd highly recommend giving them a shot at your business. read more

I've visited Dr. McFarlane and his team for over 5 years and have been very pleased with the care and attention I receive. Lisa (my dental hygienist) does an incredible job keeping my mouth clean & healthy, and Dr. McFarlane has been very helpful with more serious issues. For example, I recently had an orthodontic emergency of sorts when my lower retainer wire broke; I called Dr. McFarlane's office at 9 am and they made arrangements to see me that day (!) at noon. I had a new, improved retainer in place by the time I left. Great service and care; I recommend. read more

I had been trying to submit a claim to get reimbursement for my dental cleaning in May '22. First, I was told "I had to" do x-rays for that visit. Should have taken notice of this red flag. I've been going to this practice for over 10 years and I alternate care with a periodontist. So, there is an ongoing struggle for that xray $$. I had struggled getting my new dental insurance company to accept my claim, they now rejected the claim requiring the dentist's signature. I had already paid for his services and I knew his signature would mean he would get the reimbursement. No problem, I would be returning for minor work. Now, Marizol, is refusing to allow Dr. McFarlane to add his signature because she says she owns the business, and I cannot leave a message for Dr McFarlane. Something is wrong with this person. I have been an office manager for a medical practice for 13 years and the above scenario would simply be insane in a medical practice. I can only imagine what the internist would think if I were telling her patients that I now owned the business and refused to pass a message from a patient. It is a sad state of affairs at McFarlane Dental. read more

I live in Houston, I had a dental emergency on 01/11/2020 while in Austin for my birthday. They got me in immediately and made me feel brand new again. Everyone in the office was so nice and explained the procedure, charges and follow up. If I'm ever in the Austin area, I would definitely visit this dentist again. read more

Visited for cleaning on 4/5/18. Dental service was quite good, but the receptionist named Terry was extremely rude with a condescending attitude. I tried to give her the benefit of doubt (maybe I took it the wrong way, maybe she's having a bad day, maybe that's her personality) but in the end, I could not justify her rudeness. Needless to say, I won't be returning. There are many dental offices that offer a good dental service AND good customer service. read more

VERY late on reviewing but I just thought of my really positive experience at McFarlane today and realized I had not left them a review yet! I came here last year during my school's final exams week because I had chipped my tooth in half. They took me in the day after I called and even stayed past closing to put a crown in. They're all so kind and dedicated and the receptionist was really sweet too! So cool that they even had the machine that makes the porcelain crowns! Dr. McFarlane is pretty nice. You can obviously tell that he knows what he's doing. I didn't get to interact with him much, but he seems like a nice guy. Lisa was my hygienist, and she was Absolutely fantastic. She had great bedside manner, supportive, informative, and caring. A true professional! The only reason I would give this place 4 stars is because the front desk was everything the dentist and hygienist was not. The lady at the front desk was rude and definitely gave a bad impression of the place. I was waiting for my appointment when a lady came in who needed cleaning, but requested for no x-rays. The lady at the front desk basically berated her and made a big deal on how nothing can get done without it. In fact the patient said that she was undergoing chemo, so she wanted to opt out of the irradiation. That interaction alone almost made me just walk out of the office. The front desk is so rude, I'm surprised people even come here. Thank goodness the actual dental staff is on point. I Would recommend Dr. McFarlane and definitely Lisa, but just in case, don't be scared away by the brusque front desk. read more

Let me preface this by saying I have always had a deep rooted fear of the dentist. From the time I was a kid, going to the dentist was always a frightening and uncomfortable experience. As an adult, I neglected keeping up with the routine cleanings and examinations until finally, the toothache from a cavity and jaw pain from erupting wisdom teeth lead me to the dentist once again. I first made the mistake of going to Castle Dental. Castle probed and poked me, showed me terrible pictures of extreme cases of gum disease and then gave me a treatment plan totaling $6000 with little explanation of services recommended. After that experience and wanting to seek a second opinion, I was lead to Dr McFarlane upon high recommendations of a coworker. Dr McFarlane is a great dentist. Suddenly going to the dentist was not as awful as I once remembered and actually pleasant. His entire office staff, receptionist, hygienist and dental assistant are always super friendly and helpful. I find Dr McFarlane to be very friendly, professional and above all, honest. After my experience with Castle, Dr McFarlane took the time to review my xrays and measurements and reassured me that the list of recommended services from Castle were not all necessary and not completely accurate. He took the time and explained the different types of cleanings and services and explained to me what was urgent and what services I could work in later. Dr McFarlane pulled out all 4 of my wisdom teeth and I can honestly say it wasn't that bad. Who knew wisdom teeth removal could be so easy? Thanks to Dr McFarlane, I experienced no pain, no need for pain meds and I was back to normal 5 days after surgery. The good thing about Dr McFarlane is he is a young guy who is obviously very enthusiastic about what he does and educating his patients on good dental health. I no longer put off going to the dentist and I would highly recommend Dr McFarlane to anyone. A+++ read more

I had a bit of trouble filling out paperwork at home so I thought to get to appointment early to do that, but receptionist seems a bit mad/ rude but everyone else with smiles an very nice people I felt welcomed an happy they went over everything with me an gave me my plan and what we were going to do! I went in for a cleaning appointment for the first time today. I had a very positive experience all around. They took my insurance info as soon as I walked in and I immediately went into the hygienist, Lisa's office. She was so professional and kind. At the end, Dr. McFarlane did an examination and gave some great feedback. He's also very personable and friendly which made the experience even more positive. While on a cruise I experienced a very painful tooth ache which was treated by the amazing team of Dr.'s on the cruise ship but didn't resolve the problem. After a week of pain and too many doses of Tylenol and Advil I returned to Austin only to find my regular dentist was on vacation. My partner uses Dr. McFarlane and made an appointment for me. Dr. McFarlane's office has plenty of parking, Teri (Gosh, I hope that's how she spells her name) was amazing and handled all of my insurance paperwork for me, and I was seen quickly. The man is amazing! He identified some issues and offered several treatment options. He's funny and made the experience so much more pleasant with his humor. Dr. McFarlane will be my dentist from now on. Great location, easy parking, takes insurance, and very professional. I have been telling anyone that will listen how great this dentist is! read more

Going to the dentist has always been one of those I-hate-it-but-I-kinda-have-to type o' things. It was never enjoyable and I always wished it away. Fortunately, when we moved to Austin and I could no longer afford to keep procrastinatng, my sister-in-law recommended her friend, Dr. McFarlane. I'm glad she did because I don't think I've ever had a more pleasant experience with a dentist my entire life. He genuinely cares! He takes the time to explain what he's doing, why he has to do it, and is just an overall personable, nice guy. I also can't forget his office staff, who are all friendly as well. Now this doesn't mean that I'll be visiting the dentist when I don't have to, but when I do, it's going to be SO MUCH better! read more

I was referred to Dr. McFarlane by one of his dental hygienists whom I know - and am SO glad I went. I was diagnosed with 3 cavities (I brush, I swear) by a dentist I had googled, but was pregnant at the time, so they couldn't do anything at the time. By the time I was able to get them filled, I had (luckily) found Dr. McFarlane. Well, guess what - I didn't have 3 cavities, I only had 2. I realize just how important it is to go to a dentist who has his/her own clinic - b/c he actually cares about patients, rather than just making a buck. (Dr. McF and I even went over the area where this supposed third cavity was... and there was a little something - but it was NOT a cavity.) He and his staff have great bedside manners, make you feel comfortable, and also have all great technology. My husband and I both go to him, as will our kiddo... once he has teeth. :) read more

Dr. McFarlane and also Lisa the hygienist are amazing professionals. I have been seeing them for most of my life, even before Dr. McFarlane came into the office, and I can say without a doubt they are courteous and professionals. The few times I have seen other Dentists and Hygienists when I lived in cities other than Austin I realize how hard it is to find good care for your teeth. I see them twice a year and sometimes again for another procedure if necessary but I don't worry about getting ripped off or having something bad happen to me while in their care. They are patient and kind in answering any of my questions and I usually have several. Finding good health care professionals that you can continue to see for years (decades) without issue is challenging but they make it very easy. Shout out to Terry behind the receptionist desk who is also awesome. Give these guys a shot because you will continue to have positive results for years to come. read more

I have conflicted feelings about this dental office. Dr. McFarlane is a great dentist, though I didn't always feel like he was taking my (insert whatever I was in the office for--cleaning, filling, etc) seriously due to his holding conversations with other people in the office while he was working in my mouth. Ordering office supplies, talking about another patient, etc. Dr. Mobley is a star and she is what kept me coming back to finish my dental treatments. What I can't get past, however, is the reception staff's incompetency, bad attitudes, and over charging me multiple times. I can't trust that I won't be over charged again or that I haven't been over charged other times in the past that I didn't catch. If you decide to go to this office, proceed with caution. Double check every claim with what you paid to the office (they have you pay outright then send the claim to your insurance...). Overall, would not recommend. read more

I've found Dr. McFarlane and his staff to be excellent. They are all very considerate,and always explain what needs to be done, are meticulous in the services they provide. Dr. McFarlane doesn't mind taking a wait and see attitude when it is warranted. Dr. McFarlane took over Hal Moore's practice when Dr. Moore retired. I was a little apprehensive at first since Dr. McFarlane is so young - but it didn't take long for me to realize what an excellent dentist he is. He's a keeper! read more

Dr. McFarlane is amazing!!! I have seen dentists in Europe and in the US, from really bad ones to really good ones, and Dr. McFarlane is hands down THE BEST DENTIST I HAVE EVER HAD! A friend suggested him to me and I am so grateful for that. Dr. McFarlane is so very kind and patient! He is knowledgeable, up-to-date on all things in dentistry and simply the Leonardo Da Vinci of teeth! Not only does he fix the things that need fixing, he also does an amazing job fixing teeth and making sure that they look good esthetically which is very important to me. He recently replaced a crown that was not sitting right and was starting to cause issues and I was quite terrified to go get it done (my last painful and long crown replacement process with another dentist is still engraved in my memory, and not in a good way!), and he completed the entire process within 3 hrs and I experienced absolutely no pain! NO PAIN! I am so relieved! I have been seeing Dr. McFarlane for a few years now and will continue for as long as possible. He may never move lol. Dr. McFarlane and his staff are incredible. They took me in at very short notice realizing the TMJ pain I was having. He is highly skilled, patient, and takes time to thoroughly explain what is wrong. The office is very well run, professional, and efficient. The staff is very welcoming and friendly. He is an outstanding dentist and gracious human being. I have been to him several times now. Every visit exceeded my expectations, both in dental care and follow up. Dr MacFarlane is a great dentist! He has always been very knowledgeable and helpful to me, giving me recommendations on dental and orthodontic related care. His hygienists are very conscientious about making sure the teeth are properly cleaned, and his fillings when needed, are not painful. Dr. McFarlane is an amazing dentist. He goes above and beyond any dentist I've had in the past. I have some complicating medical issues, and he has been the only dentist to show any interest in how my dental cleanings trigger flair ups. After talking with him, he spoke to my doctor and together they worked out a plan. I've also had a horrible experience in the past with fillings that caused extreme pain. He was very sensitive to this issue, and again worked hard to make sure it was as easy and painless as possible. I'm new to Austin and just picked a dentist from ZocDoc with good reviews, a time I could get in that worked with my schedule, and in a location that worked well for me. I was thoroughly impressed with every bit of this appointment. Tammy at the front desk was super friendly and helpful from the first phone call to confirm till the second I left. Prema, the dental hygienist was super knowledgeable, spent lots of careful time with me, and actually showed an interest in me as a person as well. I actually signed up for Yelp just so I could review my experience with this dentist. It was, without a doubt, the WORST experience I have ever had in a dental office. Though his office staff is kind and accommodating, they are they only thing good about Dr. McFarlane's practice. I made an appointment with him after four days of the worst tooth pain I have ever had. I had just started a new job, and my insurance had not kicked in yet, so I explained I would be paying cash for the visit. After walking in the (completely un-private "room") and looking at my x-ray, he leaned me back to prepare to start work on me, with no explanation of what was going on, no introduction, nothing. I asked him what he was doing, he said, numbing you up, we're going to clean this out. I then asked him to wait, to please explain what I needed. He proceeded to tell me (again without telling me what the problem was) that if I didn't get "this" taken care of, I would end up in the ER. His words exactly "I want to keep you from dying." Terrified at this point, I said, look, I just started a new job, I have no insurance yet, what will this cost? He said, well root canals are certainly not free. I said, so that's what I need? A root canal? Great. Good to know. The cost without insurance is in the thousands, he explained. Finally I said I would have to wait, he said he would give me antibiotics in the meantime. I said will that help with the pain, he said not for a couple of days. I then asked if there was anything he could give me to help with the pain. He said no. "People often come in here looking for narcotics. I have no way of knowing if you are a drug seeker." Drug seeker?! That makes zero sense. How would I FAKE a tooth that needs a root canal? In the end, I left with antibiotics, still in the worst tooth pain imaginable, and a mad as can be. The next day I saw a different dentist (Rose Dental) who was fantastic, helped me immensely, explained in detail what would need to be done, and didn't make me feel as if I was either going to die or that I was a drug addict.
