As much as I like Dr. Buckingham as a person, I cannot recommend him as a dentist. I have mixed emotions about writing and editing my review. I gave Dr. Buckingham five stars because his dental clinic was spotless, and the staff members were very friendly. Unfortunately, I have to change my review to 1 star, and here is why: My first appointment was on February 8, just before my bachelorette and wedding trip to Mexico City. Dr. Buckingham worked on three of my molars, but unfortunately, they were a little too tall, preventing me from chewing on that side during my trip. I had to return for three more appointments to rectify this issue. However, I still cannot chew meat on that side of my mouth, indicating an unresolved problem. On March 7, I returned to Buckingham Dental, and he adjusted the right side again and worked on the left side of my mouth. This time it was 3 molars. I was in a lot of pain after he worked on it and removed my silver fillings. I could not chew on that side of my mouth. I went to see him again, and he adjusted the bite because the molars were too tall. I could not still chew on that side, and the pain was getting worse. I went to see him again on March 21, and he adjusted the bite because they were still too tall. That procedure was excruciating. Still, I could not chew on that side, and the pain was worse. Finally, on March 28, I went to see him and explained again that when I drank something cold or hot but mostly hot, there was a pain shooting in my brain. I could not deal with the pain anymore. He finally did an X-ray and saw that one of the fillings he had put back on March 7 had not glued to the molar. He removed the filling and put in a new one. I was still in pain, but I could at least chew on that side. I went to see him again on April 11, and I told him about my pain. He adjusted the molar to know if it was too tall. That did not work. He asked me to come back on April 18 to modify it. I lost my trust in his ability to fix my molars since he had had many changes and could not do it. I decided to go to another doctor who listened to me and did a test to see if I had nerve damage. The test was positive, and she sent me for a root canal. Today, I went to get a root canal after being in horrible pain for more than a month. After the root canal, my new dentist will put in a crown and fix the right side of my mouth because I still cannot break the meat when I eat. My new dentist also mentioned that I will probably need another root canal in the future for another one of the molars that Dr. Buckingham worked on. I feel bad for saying this because Dr. Buckingham is very nice, but based on my experience with him, I cannot recommend him as a dentist. I pray that your experience is better than mine. read more

I have been to MANY dentists (unfortunately) because I have all the dental problems and have moved a bunch. That's to say that I have a large "sample size" when I review a dentist. I can say the Dr. Buckingham and the whole crew at Buckingham Dental are top-notch. He's great about explaining options while also providing recommendations. He's clear about what he's doing and why, always making sure you are in the know about your dental health. He also has a real knack for explaining things in a way that is easy to understand. I can't say I enjoy going to see Dr. Buckingham because, well, it's hard to say you enjoy dental work. If you are reading this review.. RUN!!!! I came in for a broken bridge, he left my tooth decaying and part of a temp on that he plopped a temp bridge on. It took another dentist 8 hour of work to clean up this mess. The receptionist yelled at me to SIGN SIGN SIGN, I dont even know what I signed. Ohhh and let me mention that he not only dead bugs everywhere and roaches when I went to the bathroom. He will be reported to ADA and health dept. Dr. Buckingham and his staff are excellent. Allyssa (sp?) typically performs my x-rays and cleaning; she is top notch. Dr. Buckingham always follows up with a visit and weighs in. I had a partial crown last year from Dr. Buckingham and by my evaluation it was handled expertly and is still holding up well. The quality of the work done appears to be excellent. Dr. Buckingham and his staff bring calm to the situation and are expertly knowledgeable and professional during minor and more major work like this. It is also worth mention that Dr. Buckingham was interviewed and featured on KUT and Nightline(?) for an insurance run-around when he had a bicycle accident a few years back. Given I switched to him from my previous dentist following billing issues, and given the smoke and mirrors of medical billing in general, this experience has lead me to believe that I am in good hands from the billing aspect as well. So far that has checked out after every visit. If you are after professionalism paired with a personable and calming experience, Dr. Buckingham and his staff have held up in my 2+ years of going there after a dentist switch. It's taken me almost three years to write this because I was pretty nervous about sharing my experience. He gave me local anesthetic on both sides of my mouth, was drilling into my tooth, then realized his tools weren't small enough. Still charged me for the meds. I was so flustered I paid and left. He had to take out my retainer, so the next day I went back to get my retainer to have another dentist put it back in. He threw it away. I paid another dentist to remold my retainer. Again, I was totally beside myself I wasn't thinking and didn't think to ask for this doctor's office to pay. The worst part of the entire experience was that he asked questions that were too personal during my visit and then preceded to call me after business hours on my personal cellphone multiple times. My now husband can vouch for this. I booked him in the first place because of his outstanding reviews and because of my emergency situation. I hope this was a one time thing for this office, but again, it's taken me a long time to put my experience out there. Hopefully it will help someone else. read more

My experience with Buckingham Dental has been great so far. I hadn't been to a dentist in a few years, so I knew my teeth wouldn't be in perfect shape. They spotted some developing concerns with my gum line and directed me to try some lifestyle changes. I took their advice, and now my gums are way healthier! On top of that, they've been very accommodating. I had to reschedule one visit on very short notice, and they handled it cordially and professionally. Their staff are friendly, and Dr. Buckingham is great. He's a straight shooter; he'll give you his advice in a direct, straightforward way. That might've surprised a few other reviewers on here, but personally, that's the kind of medical treatment I prefer. Oh, and if you're concerned about dental treatment during the pandemic, I should note that they've implemented some really smart, simple methods to reduce patient to patient contact. I feel similarly to Faith's review on here. The one star is for Dr. Buckingham's good chair-side manner and for his friendly and polite staff, which seems to be a major theme in his good reviews. The negative four stars are how I feel about his work and his integrity. I had two fillings done (both of which I am kicking myself for as they were "preventative" and I felt pressured into getting them). He almost filled the wrong two teeth! I had to tell him what teeth he was doing. Huge red flag! One of the fillings was giving me major pain so I went back in and he adjusted my bite. When I sat in the chair he looked in my mouth and immediately said "Oh, I can see right away it's high." If it was so obvious, why didn't he fix it last week when he filled the tooth? The correction didn't stop the pain so I came in yet again and mentioned that my bite actually felt low and that I was having problems flossing in between that tooth. Lo and behold, there was something "lodged" in between my teeth that he had to SAW out. Yes, the tool is called a saw and that is what it feels like. It was not a pleasant experience but I was still willing to forgive and hopefully forget my tooth pain. HOWEVER, he tried to charge me for the visit and x-rays because according to him there was no problem with his work, he had just magnanimously helped me dislodge a piece of food that had gotten stuck! So basically, it was my fault - because of course, it was highly likely that on the exact same day he did my filling, I coincidentally got a piece of food wedged super tightly in between my teeth and it hardened immediately and stuck there so firmly that it had to be SAWED off. Right. To this day, over one month later, I am still dealing with bite problems on this tooth - but with an amazing, wonderful and awesome NEW dentist. I have no faith in Dr. Buckingham's skill as a dentist and more than that, question his integrity as a person. I would never go back to someone who shames you into thinking that their mistakes are YOUR fault. P.S. On my first visit he did sell me on putting up a yelp review to get in a drawing for Austin City Limits tickets, which might explain the profusion of 5 star reviews here. read more

I thought I owed it to the next person to at least give a summary of my experiences here, since I found the overwhelming positive reviews to be profoundly misleading. Nowadays many people can be paid off with discounts or free items to write reviews which makes everything difficult. The work I got done: 6-7 fillings, 2 temporary crowns and 2 crowns. I have been a patient for over a year. For the crowns, I had to come back a few times to get my crowns done for a variety of reasons. As a university student it makes it difficult to keep coming back. REASON 1 I had to come back: Before he could put in the permanent crowns, he fitted me with temporary ones which inevitably fell out and were far too high. He had his dental assistant do major work on my teeth that he was responsible for. He also seemed to be "training" her to do work like this. They were so high in the end that I felt nerve pain when I would bite on things. I had to come back a second time just to have the temporary crowns adjusted for height. REASON 2 I had to come back: After the height adjustments, something went wrong and the lab broke the copy of my teeth they needed to form the permanent crown and I ended up coming back a third time. REASON 3 & 4: Throughout other visits to the office, I needed the crowns adjusted for height, despite spending maybe 30 minutes with him initially trying to figure out at what height they should be. He seemed very unsure of himself. At the end, he told me that the crowns were at perfect height, practically flawless. On a later visit to fill some cavities, he had to make major readjustments to the height of the crown again. At this point, I had been suffering with headaches from my bite being completely off. REASON 5: The crown continuously got food stuck under it since the beginning. The reason for this has been explained differently 3 separate times. The first time he told me it was because there was a gap underneath it and that would mean having to replace the crown completely. The second time (after the tooth next to it got a cavity--due to the fact that food was getting stuck there) he told me it was the tooth next to it that was the culprit and that he would fill it up the right way to prevent that. The third time he told me that it was just the natural curvature of my teeth and nothing could be done about the food getting stuck there. The crown with the food getting stuck under it has been miserable for me. Aside from the constant swelling of my gums, can you imagine the misery of having to use a water pick to shoot out huge chicken or meat chunks from below the crown? For the fillings, I was worried after the first filling he did because the height was off for that one. Regardless, I was so taken aback by the reviews, that I thought that I must actually be overreacting. He told me that the filling just felt off because it was numb and that things would be okay. Since I am busy with my schooling, I didn't really have time to keep going back and forth to his office for him to fix my teeth which by chance he could either get right or wrong. I felt the filling was still high, but I didn't come back because there was no visible pain associated with biting. It just felt off. In the last round of fillings I did there, I spent 3 hours at his office. It was a complete nightmare. Every time he filled a tooth, the wedge he inserted would break and he needed a new one. He had to pull one of the lodged and broken wedges out of my teeth with much force. He even suggested that it could have even remained in there, seeing how well lodged in it was, despite it's being broken. There was one tooth in particular he couldn't even figure out. It was the dental hygienist who eventually came up with an idea on how it could be filled. He traumatized the tooth with trial and error wedges, trying out 3 different types of wedges in the same tooth, before in the end, reverting back to the original wedge. After the last round of fillings I did, I got a very painful sensation when flossing between two teeth he filled. At first there was some kind of sharp edge sticking out of one of the teeth. When I flossed it, it hurt like the worst nerve pain ever and some of that crud was taken out. Even days after that, the pain was still there with flossing. I searched the whole of the internet trying to figure out why. After going back to his office, he fixed an uneven spot between two of the teeth that I told him didn't hurt. He numbed me for this. He took an X-ray and told me that the tooth looks fine, and to just wait it out. Numbed for no reason. The pain persisted even after that. I have been suffering with headaches for months after seeing this dentist. The only positive thing I can say about my experience here is that Dr. Buckingham has a nice personality and is very social and bubbly. However, that isn't enough for a dentist. I hope this review is helpful to someone out there. I tried to be as objective as possible. read more

My dentist is the best! Dr. B. is amazing at what he does and is thorough in his assessment. I've now had 5 appointments with him. I've had 2 cleanings, fillings, and a consultation for Invisalign. Even in his busy dental practice, Dr. B. is not above answering his own phone from time to time. New to Austin, without a regular dentist, and having a cosmetic emergency, I plowed into Dr. Buckingham's office stressed and critically evaluating his set-up and expertise (because, "cosmetic emergency"). Dr. Buckingham is a young but wonderfully skilled dentist who was patient and kind throughout my visit! The office itself is brand new. I've been to quite a few offices where you lean back in the chair (with its cracked plastic covering on the headrest), staring up at peeling ceiling paint and trying to slant your eyes towards the tiny TV in the corner. Not at Dr. Buckingham's! The office just opened in February, everything is shiny and sparkling clean, and the TV adjusts to face down directly over your head. IDEAL. Also, he has Netflix. Mic drop. (we bonded over Parks and Rec) The one thing to note is that, while Dr. Buckingham is extremely competent and a cheerful, fun person to be around, he is new enough to be very "by the books" as far as his procedures. Honestly, it threw me off a little to begin with. But, now that I'm thinking about it, do you really want a dentist who's a rule breaker?? Nope. My childhood dentist was also my best friend's mom, so I'm super snotty about dentists. Some things I LOVE about Buckingham Dental: -I can book my appointments online -I'm always seen immediately -Everyone is professional and friendly -The doctor is trustworthy, never trying to up-sell or fix something that doesn't need fixing -The office is immaculate (and not in the way of that Madonna album of yore) -They always praise my fastidious upkeep, but I also know for a fact that they don't get all preachy (Madonna again!) if you aren't a pristine brusher Some things I LIKE about Buckingham Dental: -Brad Buckingham just sounds so posh. With my busy schedule I appreciated the little wait time. For those that might have to wait, there is a comfy waiting area with free coffee and wifi. Nothing shy of the BEST dental experience ever! Dr. B's office is super clean, comfortable, and hi-tech! He is kind enough to not only have TVs in the exam areas, but he has a Netflix account hooked up for viewing pleasure. Oh, and most importantly, Dr. B is awesome. He clearly explains every process thoroughly and in a way us non-dentists understand. It doesn't stop there, the rest of the staff (Daisy and Adriana (sp?)) are the best! While Dr. B might be busy making all the smiles of ATX perfect, the gals will take great care of you! Just left Buckingham Dental and was very impressed with this fledgling dental practice. The equipment is brand new and state-of-the-art. My 3 yr old loved getting to watch Curious George during her dental exam...it was a great distraction for her and allowed Dr. Buckingham to do his job without having to having to fight her. BTW, he and his staff are very personable and easy to talk to... answering all my concerns and even explaining my insurance coverage options (offers through my employer of course). Great visit! Was looking to get a teeth cleaning because it has been a couple years since my last one. I wasn't currently on my employers dental plan at the time so Brad gave me his $99 discount for a non-insurance exam, X-Rays, and teeth cleaning. Office was brand new with state of the art equipment. I watched a Netflix documentary while he did the cleaning and made the visit enjoyable. The entire staff was super friendly and professional. I initially came to see Dr. Buckingham out of convenience because his office is relatively close to my house and most of the reviews on here are 5 star. I did not have a good experience with this dentist. The first two cleanings were fine and were done by his staff. I went to him to get all four wisdom teeth pulled out. He was able to pull out 3 in a very short period of time but struggled so much with the fourth that he ended up referring me to a different dentist to finish the job because his wrist was hurting "because he was having to work so hard on my tooth". I understand someone hurting, but what bothered me was his comment and the way he made it. I was willing to forget about that situation as again, his office is close to my house, so I went for my cleaning the next year. This time I had different insurance so I made sure to call ahead of time and ensure that he was in my network. I was told that he was. When I get to the office, it was clear that he was understaffed because he was doing the cleanings himself and dealing with multiple patients at once. He kept excusing himself through my whole cleaning and he would go tend to another patient. At some point he even made a comment while cleaning my teeth stating that "had he known he'd be doing that much work today I wouldn't have gone rock climbing the day before." Made me feel like my mouth required much more work than what he's used to. At the end of my cleaning, he didn't even give me that final cup of water to rinse out my mouth. I had to excuse myself as I followed him to the front desk so that I could rinse out in the bathroom. To top it all off, weeks later I get a bill for almost $300 because it turned out he wasn't in my insurance network even though his receptionist had confirm that he was. I had to contest my claim twice before my insurance sided with me and made it to where I didn't have to pay the bill. But they paid him so he still benefited in the end. I was just happy to not have to pay it myself but very frustrated that he still got paid for what was a very unpleasant experience and a pretty bad teeth cleaning. I DREAD the dentist. I'm not great about taking care of my teeth and had put off going for almost three years. Fortunately, they were judgment-free, and took good care of me, and got my one cavity taken care of really quickly. Dr Buckingham is an awesome guy. We had a blast watching "Archer" on Netflix (after confirming that there were no kids around) and discussing Marvel movies. I had a perfectly good dentist in Austin who decided to leave my dental plan. So I was a "satisfied customer" who had to find somewhere else to be just as satisfied. I'm fortunate enough to have found such a group of people at Buckingham Dental. They take my insurance, the hygienist was spot on in not being overly-judgy about my lack of flossing, but doing appropriate education. The doc was friendly, and took time getting to know me a bit. And the office is in my neighborhood and within walking distance. I've seen several less-than-glowing reviews about fillings... they have me "on guard," but so far, I don't have anything negative to say. Dr. Buckingham is the worst dentist I have ever had. Period. He is great at talking and making jokes, but when it comes to teeth, aside from the basic cleaning, his work is awful! I was also tricked by all the five star reviews here and now I have terrible dental work to show for it. He messed up a filling And like others said there were some height problems too that got me to come Back. He didn't catch a major infection in one of my teeth because of dental equipment being left in my root canal and I'm so glad that another dentist found it on the first try.
