This family owned business seems to have forgotten the meaning of customer service. I went in to find a digital lock. The person working the upstairs counter couldn't be bothered to direct me to where the item was, and his attitude was beyond rude. When I asked if Alpers could install a lock the counter person without looking up gave a snarky "we don't do handyman work" as a response. I'll think twice before going back to Alpers, and will first choose Ace Hardware, or even Home Depot. read more

This place has really gone downhill. Spent nearly 3k on a green egg set up with them coming out of the pandemic in '21 and was told by Adam, the owner, that I'd have coupons to redeem/slash store credit. No mention was made of how they'd arrive or them expiring. Time passed before I had a chance to go back and he showed no interest at all in honoring what he'd told me and wasn't apologetic in the least. Got home and asked my Mom if she'd had any issues with me and she told me a story about a recent visit where she needed help identifying a lightbulb that needed replacing. She enlisted the of the sales woman, who asked her "What do I look like, a psychic?" Go to this store if you want to be belittled and treated poorly. read more

Came in and asked for some help with which bolts to get. The first person downstairs listened to my question and referred me upstairs. The person upstairs helped me and knew what he was talking about, but seemed like he didn't want to be there, and getting his help felt like I was pulling teeth. Overall it's a good hardware store, but I think they need to train their people better in terms of customer service. read more

True Value rewards and coupons make this an easier choice than the trip to HD or other home improvement chain. They are helpful, knowledgeable and also have seasonal stuff like camping chairs, Yeti cups, Carhart gear, grills, propane tanks, and great parking behind the store. You have several options in Port Washington when choosing a hardware store. If Alpers doesn't have it, the other ones won't either. Why go to another store where you might be berated and talked down to? Or to the other place where the staff for the most part is unfamiliar with what you're looking for? Alpers is family owned & run, & has been Port Washington's Hardware Store since the day the glacier moved on, leaving a pile of rocks & dirt behind. Okay not quite, but it's gotta be 100 years old or so, & they sell everything but your grandma. They are also probably the friendliest people in all of Long Island. read more

The annual Apler's Karmacue on Sunday 5/19/2019 was a huge disappointment - they ran out of food before 1:30 PM even though the food event was supposed to last from noon to 4 pm. How can you run a food event and run out of food before 1:30? This just shows how disorganized and incompetent the people running this event are. When I tried to buy tickets, the ticket seller told people they are out of tickets because all ribs are gone and to just pay cash to the vendor, but, when I went to La Diliq that still had some sliders left and told the woman the ticket seller told us they are out of tickets and to just pay cash, the woman at La Diliq said she is not allowed to accept cash, so her husband removed the tray of sliders and put it in the back--- very disappointing and disgusting thing to say and do. These are very un-neighborly people! read more

What can one say about an institution? Once you have achieved that status, no comment from Yelp or any other web site can do any harm. But for those of you who are new to the North Shore or who are looking for a break from the chain stores, check out Alper's. I didn't know Dave Alper personally, but my dad did. My father had a business in Port for many, many years and he raved about Dave and later, after he passed, about his wife. Now Dave's daughters and sons-in-law run the place. It is an old fashioned but large, modern store with personal service. Wood floors and drawers holding everything anyone would ever need in this life, or the next. Alas, the outdoor store which sold and serviced snow blowers and power lawn mowers on Irma Avenue has given way to a Benjamin Moore paint shop but it is closely overseen by Lew Cohen (a son-in-law). I needed a very small part which I could not locate anywhere. It was for the spritzer on my fancy new sink. The manufacturer was of no help at all nor was the installer. But Lew Cohen went through every draw in the store and came up with the part. I installed it and it worked!! There is no better recommendation than a store owner who takes a personal interest in your problems and doesn't rest until he/she solves it. Great selection, you can find pretty much anything there.. but not all of the staff knowledgable about items. Was looking for a specific outdoor lightbulb that I was picking up for someone else and the woman helping me gave me an indoor only lightbulb (assuring me that it could also be used for outdoor) that did not even fit into the lamp. Had to return it the next day and refused her help and quickly found the correct lightbulb on my own. read more

I recently had some free time on my hands and unfortunately my wife found out. Luckily I got to choose which chores I would handle and I decided to tackle the house maintenance tasks: squeaky doors, running toilet, loose step. I hopped over to True Value and walked up to an associate and within 15 minutes we had sussed out all the materials and tools I needed. I would like to say I repaired things at home just as quickly, but that would be an exaggeration. I can honestly say that I did save a lot of time though because I had just what I needed and I did not have to make another trip. read more

I've been going to Alper's since the day after closing on my then-goddawful house in 1995, upon recommendation by a colleague who, as it happened, turned out to have been living in Port Washington for many years. He told me that it was a store that had everything -- and boy, he wasn't kidding! I was able to find replacement hardware for windows that wouldn't stay locked, plumbing parts for a sink that leaked, drip pans for a stove that lacked them, as well as a huge selection of household items and small appliances I desperately needed to outfit my kitchen and bathrooms. In time, as the inside of my house improved, I began to concentrate on the outside, and Alper's had it all, from gardening supplies, to barbeques (we still have the Weber Genesis we bought there way back when), to lawn furniture, to paints and stains. The thing I find most amazing about Alper's is the wealth of diverse loose hardware they have in stock, and the fact that everyone who works there knows what they have, where they are, and are more than happy to search high and low to find exactly what you need.
