I rarely leave reviews, but I had an unpleasant experience at that I feel is worth sharing. When I walked in, I was expecting the typical helpful service you'd get at a local hardware store. Unfortunately, the staff was far from welcoming. Instead of being helpful, they made me feel like I was inconveniencing them. I understand that everyone can have an off day, but the lack of basic customer service here was really disappointing. i'm tired of seeing management treat their employees like dog sh**. i walked in to ask for a torque wrench and the obviously NEW EMPLOYEE brought me to torx wrenches.. honest mistake and i didn't mind so when they went to ask their employer/ superior what i was talking about the employer/ superior (who i believe is one of the owners maybe? because she's there everytime i stop in) gave them a crazy rude attitude then told them "show him where the ratchets are and leave me alone" in front of me with out realizing i was there.. to make things worse, when they did realize i was there she came out from her corner and rubbed the guy on the shoulders and made a cringe attempt at covering up the situation - claiming something like "oh new hire, he'll get it soon" and tried talking to me in a wildly different and more positive tone. i told her she should treat the guy nicer and instead of taking responsibility she said "no no that was nice it's ok." absolutely disgusting. i hope that kid quits and finds a better employer for their owner integrity. i will never patronize this business again... and this is coming from someone who is a business owner/ contractor of 17 years and knows what it's like to have employees. if you need a hardware store in port go to alpers or anywhere else besides here. read more

Top notch 10stars 110% fantastic Shields hardware have had materials and tools for every project that was needed to be done in Moms house . After I make my list 4 or 5 times a year I only have 3-5 days to get everything done for Mom, and these guys will have what's needed to get started or finish the project. If they need to order something it's typically there within a few days. I save a lot of time , and the helpful professional advice is top notch. I don't think the other options would be any cheaper. Thank you Shield's for making my life easier and more fun. read more

These guys are a joke..."fixed" something and it broke 2 months later. The people who fixed it the 2nd time did it in 1/2 the time for 1/2 the price, because they actually knew what they were doing. Save your money and go literally anywhere else. read more

I can't speak for Shields as plumbers, but I will say that when I went to the store a few days ago, the woman at the front was extremely helpful. I had a problem with an old faucet that had a leak, and I probably need to replace the cartridge, but it's so old that it's basically frozen in place. So right now I'm still mulling my options: Still try to replace cartridge? Just replace faucet? Anyway, she was terrific, very pleasant and attentive (even texted a photo of the cartridge to her brother for his expert opinion). I've been to Home Depot a lot, and good luck even finding someone in the plumbing aisle. She didn't put any pressure on me, at all, to replace the cartridge or buy a new faucet (she did show me a couple of options they had). In the end, if I replace the faucet, I may go with a cheaper option, just because we'll probably remodel the kitchen in a few years. But still: I wanted to repay her somehow for the patience and good customer service, so thought I would post this review. This isn't a one-off either: I was in there once before, and I got the same kind of good help and advice. Absolutely horrific customer service and terrible plumbing installation. They installed a toilet in our house less than 2 months ago and we woke up this morning to find the toilet leaking through our kitchen ceiling ruining our custom kitchen cabinets and crown molding. Immediately called Shields for them to tell us no one was available to come out to our house even though this was an emergency, and that they could only try and get someone out later this week to look at it, and that we could not prove it was a problem with the toilet, even after explaining it had been installed by them less than 2 months and had a puddle around it. Now frantically trying to find an emergency plumber to come in and fix it to stop further damage to our kitchen and bathroom. People in Port warned us about Shields and we should have listened. Kevin Shields is the best. My wife broke her leg and we needed a new toilet downstairs Kevin helped me pick it out, went to the warehouse to pick it up and installed it all in one day. The day before the recent tropical storm, we called Shields to see if they had a "generator cord" and the man that answered the phone was so rude and condescending. He said something along the lines of "What's a generator cord? In my 20 plus years in the business, I've never heard of a generator cord." Completely unnecessary, unhelpful and unprofessional. Unfortunately, I have lived in one of the owner's of Shield's Plumbing & Heating residential buildings the last 2 years in Port Washington. Almost every time something breaks I try and schedule for the owner or someone from Shield's to come and fix it (running sink, leaky toilet, running bathtub, replacing corroded pipes for the shower so it works again) and every time I've hired outside help because Shield's is unresponsive, slow to act and/or laughs it off like its a joke (very rude and inconsiderate). This awful attitude I've experienced being a tenant I have also seen first hand the few times I have been into Shields as a customer. In turn, I've quickly exited and gone to the better hardware store in Port Washington on Main Street. read more

I had shields install 2 toilets, a sink, and 2 new faucets 5 months ago. One faucet leaked since installation and I was charged for visits to come back. Finally the owner came and said to order a new pop up valve as that was the problem . When I received the new valve which canco tile ordered without charges and without questions ( a plus for that business) shields would not return my calls to have it installed. Ultimately I called ed ferry plumbing who informed me that the leak was due to the pipe being installed backwards!!! Well now I have a leak free faucet and did not need a new pop up valve. Shields is family-operated and the service is super helpful and friendly. When we first moved into our apartment, we made several trips here and were satisfied every time. After Hurricane Sandy, the only way you could get into the store was by knocking on the door because they had them locked. They had generators and propane gas but their service was HORRIBLE. At a time when people are trying to survive, they OVERCHARGED customers and one of the salesman who was helping customers was so rude and nasty! He should be fired for the way he was speaking. He belittled people when help was most needed. People were desperate for products and that store took advantage of customers. I will never step foot in that disgrace of store again. There are other business in that area that DIDN'T lock their doors and have never been so nasty to their customers. Do not support this store - buy your products elsewhere! read more

Storm coming on Sunday (10/28/2012) and I needed a few extra gas cans for my generator (bought the generator at Shields). They have gas cans in stock but will not sell them to you unless you buy a generator at the same time (generators are not in stock but are on the way for delivery today and tomorrow). I believe that this is illegal when storm emergencies have been declared. They have lost my business forever. read more

Charged me over 190.00$ just to tell me my kitchen faucet was defective and needed to be replaced. It is a very expensive Rohl kitchen faucet.I called the manufacturer and was sent replacement part which was installed by a different plumber and solved the problem.Owner,Kevin never returned phone calls .They are arrogant and overpriced! My husband purchased a barbecue from his nephew who recommeded bringing it to Shields Spa to be cleaned. The barbecue was dropped off and promised to be in our backyard within 2 days. Well, after a week and several calls, which no one returned, we were told that several parts needed to be replaced. My husband requested a price and again after several phone calls, we still had no reply or barbecue! After the third week my husband got fed up and when to pick up the barbecue. I used Shields for a plumbing job at my house and was not happy with the result. Shoddy work (they made a mistake they had to come back and fix), extremely difficult to schedule the work after they gave an estimate and got the run-around on multiple occasions when I called the hardware store to see when they were coming. On the plus side, they owned up to their mistake and fixed it. read more

Not to be trusted at all! found out too late they were not licensed to do plumbing in our inc village in PW when it was too late. Paid for a guaranteed water heater and had it installed by Shields. They were to reimburse us our since water heater was under a warranty. We were to get the money back once the company reimbursed Shields. Well the company reimbursed Shields and we did not get it back. Its been over a year and Kevin has probably been too busy fending off citations from Port Washington Inc Villages for unlicensed plumbing work. He has ignored our calls and requests for our $1000 reimbursement. We have spoken to Patty Shields and she claims she can't do anything about it.."up to the boss"...Well "the boss" has never our money. Not sure how long we have to wait since its been a year and a half. Lousy customer service. We are extremely disappointed in a hardware store that has been a staple in the community for years. A word to Shields. If you can't do a job adequately don't do it. A poor job leads to customer dissatisfaction. I brought my Mosquito Magnet to Shields April 4th 2014 for routine maintenance. After a month I called to see what was happening. I was assured my call would be answered. .No response. After 5 weeks I called again. Still no response. After 6 weeks I called and assured I would be called. No response. I then called for the following 2 weeks. I called and called. !!!!!! Kevin was in charge and never in 2 months did he EVER call me back. I even went there to get it. No Luck. After 2 months I finally got Bob who said he would check and after 2 months Bob said I could pick up my Mosquito Magnet . My son goes there for me and he picks it up and is advised IT WAS NEVER LOOKED AT AND NEVER SERVICED and did we want to leave it for servicing. It was now June 6. I brought it in April 4th. This place is incredible! I used to go to Home Depot to get what I need. But when I got home, I'd realize that I needed another part or some hardware that wasn't included. Shields Hardware helps you through a project. They're friendly and they ask you what you're building or fixing. They ask you if I got everything I need to complete the job, and ( believe it or not) sometimes tell me not to buy things because it's not necessary.
