I would go back but only for the deserts not the food. This placed was recommended by the Black Owned Beauty Supply next door and man was I surprised at the LACK of flavor in the food. I posted the caramel cake, shrimp and grits but not the oxtails because my husband went right to the kitchen for seasoning. I ordered a variety of items to go with the food and the only one worth mentioning is the cake. I was highly disappointed because the place is nicely decorated with excellent customer, thanks Brandon. Unfortunately I didn't eat my shrimp or grits as It lacked flavor. Creamy but still firm and not overly cheesy but hecka cheesy lol. Idk. Just good. Pan seared turkey chop was delicious. It comes with onions and bell peppers but I didn't want that. It was tender and delicious. The potato salad tasted like my grandma's. It was so good it made me shake my head! And more mac. You already know! Desserts: Buttermilk pie. My favorite dessert I haven't had in years. It was great! Red velvet was moist and delicious too. Lemon cake was good. This place is such a gem. I genuinely don't know what these other reviews are saying about the sides. The red beans and rice was very good but the yams? Ive never thought much of yams but these changed a lifelong opinion for me. They were perfectly cooked and perfectly sweet. The turkey chops are addictively good and well seasoned. The lunch plates are incredibly affordable for the amount and quality of food I received. That in itself was impressive but the quality of the desserts? Oh my lord the 7up cake is perfection. The lemon cake is moist and one of the best I've had. Peach cobbler will be a hit or miss for people depending on how much they like cinnamon/all spice flavors but that's on personal preference, not quality. There's a very clear sign that says to clean up after yourself. I would be frustrated too if I was running a business at this level and affordability, only to receive rude reviews about not being "served" properly. The amazing food was only matched by the hospitality and kindness of the staff. Service is so personable and made me want to come back again and again, which I will! The super kind cashier wished everyone a lovely day and the owner (I think) was so welcoming. I could see why all the customers besides me were people who had been here multiple times before. Cozy, immaculately clean, and so comforting. I will definitely be back to try the sides that ran out today, especially the dressing! and the 7up cake which I am sincerely grateful was recommended to us. Wow, I don't even know where to begin. Granted, I'm definitely no expert on soul food, but this is pretty darn tasty and delicious. I honestly think this is one of the best soul food places I've been to. I've never even heard of a turkey chip but wanted to try it. It did NOT disappoint. It was very flavorful and had a a unique taste that I haven't had for turkey. The Mac and cheese was also pretty solid. The cheese wasn't too overbearing and was a good consistency. For some that would prefer a Mac and cheese that is more creamy or cheesier, this might not do it for them, but this was good for me. Now the peace de resistance: the desserts. Pretty excellent. We tried all the lunch specials although the pork chops were my favorite I loved them all , the catfish was spectacular. The Sides are all delicious but the sweet potato'sare to die for. So 6 years later I find myself back at Alma's. Good to know they are still in business. Let's start with the inconvenient issues. They no longer allow call ins. That's unfortunate when you have a short amount of time for lunch. There was only 2 people in line in front of me and they were undecided. They also charge a $2 convenience fee to use debit card. If they went to cash only they wouldn't make it. Now for the good. I was a bit of a Karen because I felt rushed to get in, order my dood, wait and make it back to work and not be late for a 1 o'clock meeting. The cashier was very nice despite me being a Karen and quite professional! The food was very good but the portion was a bit small compared to R&R's. The decor was humble and neat. Overall worth 4 stars. I deducted 2 stars because of no call ins and $2 fee. PS. didn't have time for pictures as I swallowed my food before meeting. read more

My favorite soul food restaurant in LA. I usually get their lunch specials, but I often indulge from the main menu as well. Their fried catfish is supreme but I also enjoy their fried chicken and recently their salt and pepper catfish . All the sides I have tried have also been scrumptious. My personal favorites are the collard greens and sweet yams. They have a large variety of desserts as well. The service has been excellent on each visit, I have been given a warm welcome every time . I needed some sort of 7up lemon pound cake. After searching Yelp, I came across Alma's Place and decided to go by to see if I could put in an order. Here is what I gathered: Parking - the lot either has plenty of parking or is packed. I went at the same time on two different Fridays, and one day it was packed and the other time there was plenty of parking. Service - The young man who helped me get my order together answered all of my questions and was super courteous. The young woman who I helped me when I picked up the order was super nice as well. It was a quick pick up. Now for the piece de resistence... The cake! Look at my pictures. It was a hit. It was a cheesecake with bits of 7up poundcake on the top and inside the actual cheesecake. Decadent, delicious and a crowd pleaser. Not too sweet, just right. I bought the cake for my compadre, and he said that the cake made him nostalgic for his late mother's cooking. First, I want to start with the positives. This restaurant is like a JEWEL in the middle of Compton. It's decorated with such a classy decor. The attention to detail was very obvious and I loved it. You order your food from the register and then they bring the food to your table. They take cards and ApplePay, but there's no option to leave a tip. Tips are cash only, which probably prevents them from getting more tips. Brandon took our order and brought our food. He could NOT have been nicer. Funny, accommodating, a full on "can do"attitude. Loved him. It appears to be family owned. Aunt, GM, Mom and Son. There are pictures of everyone in the restaurant. We were a party of five and there were only two other people in the restaurant. It's pretty small, maybe five or six small tables. The food: soul food is really subjective. I had catfish and a couple of people people had the pork chops. We agreed they tasted really good. My issue is with the sides. All the sides needed more seasoning. Lack of salt may be intentional because so many people are trying to cut down on salt. Had I gotten my order to go, I would have doctored it up at home. My harshest criticism is they use packaged tartar sauce and it's terrible. It's easy to make tartar sauce and they should consider doing that. I'm giving this a "maybe" because you shouldn't expect it to taste like you're accustomed to. It's a really subjective thing. They open at 11:00 am and are closed Monday and Tuesday. Next time, I'm gonna have the breakfast. They have grits, which I'm dying to try. read more

Honestly I've lost count on how many times I've eaten here at Alma's, all I can say is I'm proud and honored to support this black business. This is a diner that you can come and sit with your friends, foe's or most importantly family. Why you ask? Because Alma and her staff always take the time out to interact with their customers, and her attitude is always the same, she is original and has never changed in my eyes. If you take the time out to get to know the staff, you can see, hell even Stevie Wonder can see they all uplift each other and there is never a staff under distress. They are a team that's it and that's all. This is why I keep coming back. I love atmosphere, the political conversations and even the fact that my city of Compton has her back as you can see from all of her achievement's that she proudly displays all over her diner. This Woman has come a long way. Now if you like to experience some real soul food like me, for example Alma's food is fresh unlike Dulan's his food is under the heat lamp all day, or M&M soul food in carson, straight garbage, over priced, and cash only by the way last but not least R&R soulfood spot in carson, their food has no taste, but the customer's do have great conversation amongst each other. Wishat all three of these restaurants have in common with each other are the same-( You are just a customer that's it and that's all) the owners nor the supervisors, bother to check on you nor even care to know whether or not your enjoying your meal like Alma and her crew does. So I love the new look, it's giving family vibes, cant wait to stop in again. Oh don't forget to check in on yelp for a free bottle of cool aid. The yams were hard and way too much cinnamon and more juice than yams! The Mac and Cheese had mushrooms in it which Alma lied to us and said was on the menu, I took a menu home just to make sure and no it was not on there! I had to rush to my car to get some Benadryl! The banana pudding was almost $10 with hardly any cookies and the pudding barely tasted like banana, it was watered down and the banana was not ripe, it was so hard and as you can see from the picture the slices were huge! I guess we should have turned around and left when we walked in and it was only a Mexican couple in a soul food place on a Sunday afternoon after church! I have been to Alma's Place a few times and I can say the service and food is wonderful I have even told a couple of folks to come and taste the food. I was in the area September 20, 2025 and I stopped by Alma's just to get something sweet, I got the banana pudding which I have had before and also I got a slice of the mixed berries cheese cake. This time around the banana pudding tasted horrible, when the cashier was ringing my up I take that she remembered that there was a discount on the banana pudding because she had said that there was a fresh batch made. I asked if I could buy what was fresh and she said that it wasn't here yet. That should have been a red flag for me not to buy what I was getting but I went ahead and bought it got home and everything was mushy because it had been sitting. I mean I couldn't even tell if it was vanilla wafers inside because it was so mushy. Which is the total opposite of when I had the banana pudding the first time, The banana pudding never should have been sold to me to begin and it wasn't fresh. The mixed berries cheesecake unfortunately the berries were not strained and the person I gave the cheesecake to said they didn't like crunching on the seeds of the berries and also the graham cracker crust tasted like it was burnt. Over all not happy with Alma's desserts that I spent almost $20 for. I bake as well too I never would have let a customer buy something that I had already known might be going bad.
