Recently, my laptop started acting peculiar. Double letters appeared in my emails, foreign characters popped up in website posts and whenever I typed a "t," it would bring up a search prompt. Imagine how hard it was to look up porn on Google! Relax, the last one as a joke. Seriously. I found Allocate Tech a couple of blocks south of the monstrous DMV building on 24th street. It's a family-run repair shop set in a simple and clean workspace. I was first greeted by a woman who asked what kind of trouble I was having. As I described the ghost in my machine, a young man approached from the back room and took over the discussion. He was very friendly and reassuring but had a very thick accent and I had some trouble understanding his explanations. Nevertheless, he wrote up an order--he suspected the keyboard just needed a good cleaning--and said it shouldn't be more than a couple of days. Cool. Two days later, I got a call and picked up my freshly-scrubbed pc with the offer that, should the problem return, Allocate would replace the keyboard free of labor charges. Nice touch. I contacted Alex to set up a wireless bridge for me between two buildings. I had a specific idea in mind and he used the parts I requested and was experienced with setting them up. His charges for both parts and labor (and travel, as I live far out of the area) were very fair, his bill was not "padded" and had no unexpected charges, and most importantly he did a good job. He came prepared, the equipment was pre-tested and set up as much as could be without being on location, and everything went very smoothly. Took mine here when I saw a website special for DC jack replacement for $99. They quoted me much higher at the counter and didn't know about their web ad. I am really happy with the work with my laptop and the speediness of the service. i trusted the workers' expertise very much. However, in spite of all of your great reviews, I was very disappointed this 2nd time. My husband dropped off the laptop, and he called later for a status. He was told that the job would cost $199 as he had already diagnosed the problem. I called later to confirm this but had no idea if this was appropriate for the job as I am not that savvy, but the decision was if it was worth saving the computer or buying a new one. When I picked it up, the total changed from$199 to $297. I stopped by the shop and was told that I ok'd this, as evidenced by an "ok" by the price. I never ok'd it, and if I had been told that the cost would be $297, He kept saying that I did ok it since the technician wrote ok on the work order. I do understand numbers, and I would have not had the work done, but rather would have bought a brand new computer. I went round and round with Alex about his flawed logic. He was nice about it, but he did not own up to the fact that there was a miscommunication. I will not go back to this business. Our computer was not allowing us to view the monitor. First, we went to Circular because it had received so many great Yelp reviews. But, maybe it was TOO popular since they had our computer a week but NEVER looked at it. So, my husband took it to Allocate Tech which had also received a lot of great Yelp reviews. And, we are very happy that we did. They checked out our computer within a day and we had it back in less that three days. We purchased additional RAM which they installed without charging any additional labor costs. Our computer runs great. In fact, it is probably better than it was when we bought it. My MacBook is about 7 or 8 years old and I have used the heck out of it so when it started having crashing problems I knew it was probably something major. I brought it to Alex and his staff and ask them to save it. The good news is.. They saved my computer and saved me the expense of a new Mac. The other good news is they gave me a break in some of the costs because they had my computer (the only bad news) for 5 weeks. To be fair, I did tell them no rush but still, 5 weeks was a long time. Writing to recommend Alex and Allocate Tech to anyone with computer issues -- he saved my butt on short notice, and for a more than reasonable price. I called Alex at about 2:30 p.m. on a Saturday. My computer was acting up and I needed it fixed, pronto, so I could finish work-related projects before the end of the weekend. Alex had me bring my computer down to the store, where he quickly diagnosed the problem and began fixing it. The most amazing part is that the store closed at 5:00 p.m., yet he contined to work on my computer until it was fixed at approximately 6:30 p.m. Even after he spent 90 minutes of what should have been his Friday night fixing my computer, he charged me a very, very, reasonable rate. I have used Allocate Tech 3 times however the last time was way below standard customer service. I do not know when the quality of Allocate took the trip "south" that it did (at least in my case) but I would NOT recommend them to anyone. I had always had Alex Vue (owner) service my computer and I was satisfied and even wrote a good review for him. The service calls included an upgrade to memory and a trojan once. The last visit is the one I am writing this for. (May 29, 2012) First thing it was not Alex who showed up at my home. An employee of his that I did not find - can i say - did not possess a good computer chair manner so to speak. At any rate he said he had to take it back to the shop and a virus was removed and the cost a whopping $180.00 and a few weeks later I looked and the dust hadn't even been blown out. I called Alex and he said "well you wanted it back as soon as possible" - Not a reason to me but an excuse for failing to do that small thing. Now here is the biggest gripe that I have - My Dell Dimension 510 was 6 years old and I did not know that was a long time for a computer to be running. At the very least they could have given me that information. And 3 months later one evening my computer took its last breath. In a period of two )2) years I paid Alex 555.00 for work on my computer. Anyone reading this can make their own decisions and judgements. My first experience was great. My computer was down and I had no idea why. I brought my computer in and all it was was my power cord went out. I purchased a new power cord for around $70, which came with a 90 day warranty. I left happy. However, literally 96 days later, the new power cord went out. I called Allocate and explained the situation- that the cord was just out of warranty, but that it was my feeling that the cord should really last longer. The gentleman on the phone agreed with me and asked me to bring my computer in and "We'd see what we could do". I drove down and a different gentleman came to help me. He said he would be more than happy to sell me another power cord for another $70, since mine was out of warranty. While I understood that, I was hoping they would work with me, especially considering the warranty had JUST went out and frankly, a power cord should last longer. They were extremely unhelpful- refusing to do anything for me. I asked why they had me come down- that they had given me the distinct impression over the phone that they were going to do something for me- even though the cord was 6 days out of warranty. They said they wanted to see it (thanks for having me drive all the way down so you could reconfirm what I had already told you!) Even though the gentleman agreed that the cord should not go out in 90 days,they were unwilling to back up their product or provide an exception in the name of good customer service. At the end, they were extremely rude- they even tried to argue with me over when I bought my computer!. I would never go back- not just for the poor customer service attitude when problems with their products arise, but for the complete lack of faith they seem to have in their equipment. So even though they acknowledge that power cords should last much longer- and they swore the one they sold me was new-they refused to do anything when that product proved faulty.
