    cheese curds
    Sarah V.

Grabbed a window bar seat for a happy hour $8 glass of wine and stayed for an afternoon snack of cheese curds. Huge portion of cheese curds - absolutely shareable by multiple people. Huge selection of wine by the glass, bottle or to go - and all the staff are extremely kind and knowledgeable about all the options. I like to try a fun, out of the box wine here and there, and when seeking this was once offered an option that I was told tasted acidically just like "licking a nine volt battery" and it delivered on that promise (and was so good). Always a good neighborhood shop to stop in for a sit down meal/drink or a tasty item to go!

Roasted fingerling potatoes & grilled cheese with peach jam & mixed greens. So good.

I've been to all together now several times. Always delicious. This time I had the grilled cheese sandwich with peach jam & micro greens. It was heavenly. The roasted fingerling potatoes are always so good. The dipping sauces were a garlic aioli & some kind of fancy ketchup. I could lick the bowls. I've also had their bagel with cream cheese. Better than your average bagel for sure. Servers are super cool & friendly. The place has great decor. I feel like I'm at a European cafe. You can also purchase crusty breads, unique cheeses, wines, olives, all kinds of snacks to go.

This place was a COMPLETE surprise to me. I was NOT expecting the ambience, service, and cuisine that we experienced!!! The food gives you the feeling and memories of your mother's cooking growing up. I recommend giving this place a try!!! WOW! Thank you!!!

This was another find when staying in the area. They were accommodating to a group of nine and on a Saturday morning sat us right away. I ordered the Two Eggs Any Style and so did half of the table so it was overall a hit. My scrambled eggs, grits, and house made sausage all were perfect! The Shokupan is a milk bread that comes with it and only adds to the meal. Everyone was talking about this dish all weekend!

Such amazing service!! They overheard it was my bday and provided a complimentary cake + glasses of bubbly wine for me and my friend while playing Rihanna's iconic Birthday Cake song. It was such a pleasure to spend my bday there, and side note: the food and wine are scrumptious. But the highlight was the staff that evening :)

I have been wanting to come to this place in Ukrainian village for a very long time. My boyfriend and I went for lunch on Saturday. We split the egg muffin sandwich and the burger. Both were very good, but I would argue that the egg sandwich was better because the sauce it came with was incredible. The burger itself was a little dry. Overall, I think this is a really cute cheese and wine shop with some fun dishes to try. I would come back if I was in the area for a drink or an appetizer. However, it is very small and the surcharge/restaurant fees are kind of a lot so I was not a fan of that

Three Cheese Board & fingerling potatoes with vino: a perfect afternoon snack
    Melissa R.

Came for the cheese board, stayed for the wine selection. A bright, welcoming space with staff that knows their stuff. It's a small but mighty menu and everything seems 100% delicious! We were just in need of a quick snack so opted for the 3 cheese board which alternates daily and includes the option to add charcuterie if desired and the potatoes which were the perfect crisp with 2 in made in house dipping sauce. Grab a bottle to go on your way out!

My friends and I stopped in for a Sunday brunch and had such a great time! While the food is a bit pricey, the quality was there and the service was great. This restaurant gives a very unique vibe and it was perfect for brunch with friends and sharing plates to try all the different delicious bites they offer. Can't wait to go back to try more!

I think I'm addicted to this place. Not only is it a welcoming and cute atmosphere, but the staff is so knowledgeable about all things cheese and wine. Nicole helped me find the perfect wine/cheese pairing with A LOT of education! They hosted a tasting as well as a cheese board making class that I adored. They also have all the adornments for a cheese board night in.

This is such an adorable neighborhood gem! I cake here for their happy hour wine and cheese boards and was not disappointed. Happy hour pricing was incredibly reasonable as well. Our server was friendly, but not all behind the counter seemed to be friendly. There was a DJ playing when I went which was a great touch. Seems like a great place for friends to gather or for a date night!

Just wow. If you have a guest in town & want to have an excellent bottle of wine with delicious food just come here. The service, the wine, the whole laid back/ neat/ modern vibe, the food, the beer, this restaurant has checked all my boxes. I recently went for brunch with my fiancée and her mother. I ordered the creamed eggs over toast, a salmon lox bagel, sourdough bread , a bottle of wine, and a bottle of Lambic ale. I'd like to start off highlighting the wine - the wine is extraordinary. I can safely say outside of Europe, I've had my favorite bottles of wine here at this establishment. the entire staff is trained to know everything about the wine they sell. And their selection is off the charts: Italy France Spain you name it they have it. Asking for a recommendation is like speaking to a sommelier. Their recommendations are so on point it's crazy. Please go here with friends and please speak to Kyle or Rachel for a recommendation (or anyone from the staff) they are all pro's at wine. Ok now to the food: Creamed eggs over toast - this was served over a bed of pork fat collard greens atop sourdough from aya. Wow. Collards with the cream and a little crunch was a match made in heaven. This dish had heads turning at the restaurant. Must try. Salmon lox bagel sandwich - delicious everything bagel, nova lox, has a slight lemony touch I found nice, cream cheese, the whole shabang. Can't go wrong w this dish. Can't recommend this place enough.

Came here for Happy Hour on A Sunday and sat outside on their patio area (by the road). This place has food and drink service, but it is also a store where you can browse for wine and cheese also!! Service was friendly, however, sometimes it was a bit frustrating trying to flag someone down inside while outside. Happiest hour cheese board + meats: great selection of cheese and accouterments on toasted baguettes. The salted honey was perfect for the plate. They had $6 glasses of wine for happiest hours and were served in the most delightful little glasssware! We had a great time!

Be sure to make your reservation in advance because you will not be seated without one due to its popularity among both locals and tourists. We come here every time we visit Chicagoat. The food is absolutely amazing. We had the following dishes: 1. Roasted Pig Face Straw fries topped with roasted pork face, a sunny egg, and a collection of magical sauces that somehow transform into pure comfort when mixed together. I don't even know exactly what's in the sauce, but I don't need to know. This dish is divine and an absolute must-order. The crispy fries, rich and tender pork that practically melts apart, silky egg yolk, and savory sauce create a dish that is indulgent, comforting, and ridiculously delicious 2. Green Beans Not featured in the photo because we ate them too fast. Enough said. Get them. 3. Goat Mousse The menu changes periodically, so this was a new dish for us. The goat mousse was creamy, rich, and surprisingly light, served with sweet jam, crumpets, crackers, pickles, and giardiniera. The contrast of sweet, tangy, creamy, crunchy, and savory flavors creates a little flavor party in your mouth. Every bite can be customized differently, which made this dish especially fun to share. 4. Pork Belly & Watermelon Perfectly cooked pork belly with a crisp exterior and rich, savory flavor, balanced beautifully by refreshing watermelon cubes and fresh greens. I don't know how healthy it is, but we aren't here for health. We're here for flavor. We're here for comfort. We're here to be punched in the soul with food that we will never forget! The sweet, juicy watermelon cuts through the richness of the pork belly and creates a combination that sounds unusual but works incredibly well. 5. Halibut with Thai Sprouts A beautifully cooked piece of halibut served with Thai sprouts, miso marcona butter, and blueberry fish sauce. Yes, blueberry fish sauce. And yes, it works. The fish was flaky, buttery, and perfectly cooked. The savory umami from the miso butter paired with the subtle sweetness and acidity from the fish sauce created a combination that was balanced, and memorable yet surprising to me. The restaurant itself has a dark, energetic atmosphere and is always packed. The tables are definitely close together, but given how popular the restaurant is, I understand why they maximize the space. Absolutely recommend coming here. Your tummies won't regret it.

For food, we ordered the prime rib french dip sandwich with fries and the turkey burger with coleslaw. The beef was super tender and not at all overcooked. I especially loved the flavorful horseradish and crusty yet chewy bread. The fries were just okay for me- I felt they could have been crispier and arrived a bit lukewarm. The turkey burger may have been one of the all around best burgers I've ever had. The meat had a perfectly crispy char while still being incredibly tender and juicy. I absolutely loved the spicy Asian-inspired slaw, which was both fresh and spicy. The side coleslaw was also excellent. Terrible. I am honestly not sure how people are recommending this place. I was excited to come here…read moreand had very high expectations, but unfortunately the food was extremely disappointing. Let's start from the beginning: the bone marrow. What on earth was going on? Why would you cover bone marrow with fig, bacon, and so much cilantro? Bone marrow is a delicate dish. You are supposed to taste the richness and subtle flavor of the marrow itself. The cilantro completely overpowered it, and the fig and bacon made it even worse. Chef, where did you train? This dish made no sense. Then came the agnolotti. I have no words. Just look at the photo: full of oil. I mean completely swimming in oil. Then the chitarra with seafood. Horrible. Spicy for no reason. Again, why are you trying to cover the ingredients instead of letting them speak for themselves? Also, the fish tasted frozen, not fresh. The pork belly, supposedly the signature dish, was another disappointment. Again, so much sauce that the actual flavor of the pork belly was completely lost. The staff were nice, the ambiance was okay, and the wine selection was good. But please, stop covering the taste of the food you cook. If you need to hide the ingredients under excessive sauce, spice, cilantro, oil, bacon, or sweetness, the only explanation is that the ingredients are not good enough on their own. I will not be coming back. Not even for free. Sorry. PS. Why so much bread on each dish? So much buttery horrible bread that you will trash, because it's impossible to eat all of it.

The charcuterie did not skimp out like some cheese/meat plates do.. it was a satisfying amount that we kept going back for more. The pretzel was outstanding, twisted and hot, perfectly soft and salty. To eat, I split the Gretel Griddle Burger and the Fried Chicken Sandwich with my friend because although we were there for the burger, I kept reading about the chicken sandwich being fantastic. Booyy they were not wrong!! As much as I loved the burger, the chicken sandwich was my favorite! Perfectly crispy, with this sweet and spicy glaze and the crunchy Asian pear slaw... OMG. I'm still dreaming about this! One thing we were excited about were the Elote Riblettes.. but I wouldn't order these again. My friend and I dedicated a day where we would just put our name down and however long it took we would wait haha. We drove into the city which took and hour and we put our name down and waited an hour before we were called. The weather was great so we just walked around the west loop area. We started with a half size of the green salad and a half size of the roasted bone marrow. The house salad is super refreshing. A lot of vinegar in the dressing which I personally really like. Also tasted some fennel which was an interesting flavor. The roasted bone marrow is the winner of the night. I would come back to Au Cheval for this alone. It was paired with a thick slice of Texas toast and a beef cheek marmalade and it is seriously the PERFECT balance of flavors. Fatty. Sweet. Buttery. Literally insane and this is a must order! Then came the famous burger. My friend and I each ordered a single cheeseburger with the egg and bacon added. Something to note is that the single cheeseburger actually has 2 patties and the double cheeseburger has 3 patties (3/4lbs of beef). The presentation itself is beautiful and makes you just not want to eat it haha. The burger itself is so decadent and hefty with the burger patties, cheese, egg and bacon. I'll be honest, I needed some more pickles or just something to cut all the fattiness of the burger. There were pickles in the burger and it is served with a huge pickle spear. But I still was itching for some more bitterness/acid to balance the flavors. It was so decadent, I couldn't finish it all. All in all, I would definitely come back and order the burger again and would recommend it to anyone! We ordered a side of fries which came with their garlic aioli. The fries were cooked to perfection. Super crunchy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside and piping hot! The garlic aioli is perfect and have no notes for it. We also were treated to a vanilla scoop with chocolate sauce which was the perfect cap to our meal! Our waitress was so friendly and my friend and I loved her! She was so sweet and genuine. The bread being dry I can justify by knowing that Au Cheval makes it a point to make everything gluten-free (or so someone told me). I think that's cool but not necessarily what I came looking for. I actually noticed prior to our trip from photos that the buns looked noticeably arid but I gave them no heed because of all of the praise. And I can give them the benefit of the doubt that we were there on a Sunday night, so potentially not the most quality inventory (although I personally don't think that's a great excuse). The service and the ambiance were on point! If you're wondering if there's a required attire (no shorts or flip flops) I wouldn't fret, the atmosphere is a lot more casual despite self-describing as an "intimate" setting. It's definitely more intimate than a normal burger restaurant, with dim lighting and isolated booths but what you're wearing isn't going to dictate how other guests and staff feel. I would cover up anyways just cause there was ac running. I told my friend who moved from Nyc to Chicago and he said he felt the same. And one of our couple friends were surprised to hear the patty being dry, so... off day?
