A dear friend of mine invited me out on a Saturday and I suggested Roka, one of the most reliable restaurants in town. We arrived around 4pm and, to my surprise, there was plenty of seating available. We were sat by the host and our server came shortly after. I can't recall her name but she did have great suggestions and delivered quality service. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken (reg) while my friend ordered the Sweet & Sour (sm.). The meal arrived in almost record time! I was delighted to look at our colorful, carefully assembled, plates. My meal had a considerable serving size and an even better taste. The chicken was soft, tender and juicy. With compliments from the peppers & rice, I couldn't have been more satisfied. My friend (who is picky) wasn't a fan of the mix of peppers & pineapple but I think she liked it more than she cared to admit. Overall, I had the most pleasant afternoon at Roka thanks to the everpleasing service and most tranquil of settings. It's important to show appreciation to the institutions that you enjoy, which is why I will continue to support/enjoy! Roka provides a welcoming venue, satisfactory menu items and superb service upon every visit which sets itself apart from most other Asian restaurants and above chains like P.F. Changs or Hibachis. I went on a walk around the building to try and walk off an old injury and to my dismay found that the entire building had some sort of plumbing issue as there was dirty toilet paper fecal water remnants that had poured into the alley from each unit. This really killed what little hope I had left. The pole bowl was listed as being served with eel and ponzu sauce but arrived with some sort of gross sweet mayo and looked completely different from the photo (it looked dull and suspect). I took two small bites of the imitation crab and rice and it was just all wrong and tasted old. I've been hospitalized from bad sushi from a place that was a lot nicer and a lot closer to the ocean than this, so I wasn't about to take my chances with raw fish with this many red flags. My wife's soup dumplings came out with no dipping sauce and looked and tasted suspiciously like they came out of a frozen bag - but at least they were edible. The last straw was that the waitress asked if I wanted a box for my bowl that I clearly didn't touch - and when I said no, she didn't even bother to ask me if something was wrong. So I ended up paying $15 for a bowl I didn't even eat and ended up going to another restaurant to finish dinner. Maybe they have something there worth eating, but I'm not really compelled to give it a second chance.
