I don't understand why this place is so hyped up. The sandwich I got was just okay. Nothing special about the food here. Prices are very high for what they offer. A 5-inch sub costs $7 here. The fries are mediocre and the drinks are also pretty expensive ($4 for an 8-ounce fountain drink. No free refills either.) I ordered the Yankee Doodle sandwich and was disappointed after waiting 15 minutes for it. The menu said the sandwich had turkey, but there was no turkey to be found! Only two slices of ham and three incredibly thick slices of cheese. The second time I came here I ordered Italian beef, and it wasn't even Italian Beef! It really baffles me to as why people love this place so much. It's pretty overrated to say the least. read more

so yeah, this place looks like a dump. the exterior of the shop is not terribly attractive, the employee behind the counter is equally unappealing, and the prices aren't super cheap either. now that we have appearances out of the way... good golly this place has DELICIOUS subs. the capone is great. so is the smoked turkey, the veggie, the california, the where's waldorf, and pretty much everything else on the menu. if you're not squeamish about how the shop looks, this place is absolutely worth your time. read more

The fact that I live within walking distance of the Algonquin Sub Shop and yet somehow do not weigh anywhere near 300+ pounds is an achievement in and of itself, but it is also a testament to just how delectable and addictive these subs can be. Unfortunately, my husband and I have been on a "healthy eating" kick for the last half-year, so I don't experience dining at A.S.S. as often as I would like anymore. If you're looking for one of the best subs you'll ever have in your lifetime, though, you need to get to the A.S.S.- A.S.A.P. If you're looking for a "light and fit" type of sub or a quick bite, it's best if you went elsewhere. These subs are serious business, loaded with generous amounts of meats, cheese, veggies and condiments, and I usually have a hard time finishing even half of these sizable sandwiches. In addition, each sub is made-to-order, so be prepared to wait a little bit longer than you would for an assembly-line, Subway-type of sandwich. The A.S.S. sub is made from fresh, quality ingredients, which I've found is rarely the case with other sub shops I've tried in the past. The sub bread is phenomenal- hearty but not heavy, soft but with that perfect amount of crunchy goodness, and toasted to perfection. The sandwich components and their flavors work well together- the hearty and sometimes spicy meats are paired well with various cheeses and condiments to create a perfect-tasting sandwich. It's almost as if each of the ingredients is good on its own, but when A.S.S. combines them and heats everything up between two pieces of bread, it goes from "good" to "out of this world". I have to admit that I don't stray much from my "usual" on the menu, the "Al Capone", so I can't attest to the goodness of their other sandwiches, but my husband and other various family members lucky enough to have been introduced to an A.S.S. sub have all raved about their respective sandwiches. From what I understand, the salads are just as good, but who really wants to mess with a salad when you can get heaven between a sub bun? The french fries are also excellent- they're always cooked to order (this means fresh, hot, and perfectly crunchy) and use a seasoned salt-type mixture to add a little bit more unique flavor to the average fry. According to one of the owners (?), the cake slices (everything from German chocolate to lemon to cookies and cream) are homemade- the ones we've tried have been moist and delicious. There's nothing earth-shatteringly decadent about these cake slices, but you don't come for the cake. It's just an added bonus, or icing on the cake, to an excellent meal. A.S.S. subs are what other sub sandwiches can only hope to aspire to become, and once you've had A.S.S., other subs will pale in comparison. read more

I echo the 5 star reviews on here. these cats are sandwich ninjas. great menu, but they'll make you anything you ask for. it gets pretty busy during the peak lunch/dinner time frames so it pays to call ahead. If you're a first timer i suggest 'The Capone' or the philly cheese sub. I get 2 subs to-go every visit with one always being '#24 Texas Chili Rub'. When you're this good, you don't have to be quick or even particularly friendly, and this place is neither. But it is one of the best damn sandwiches and fries you will EVER have for this type of fare. And the portions are huge. My wife had the special and my stepdaughter had the Italian Beef and were both happy with their sandwiches, The soups were just average in my book but I do recommend it and will go back when I'm in the area. read more

Fair food poor service and overpriced. Fries not fresh cut but frozen. Kitchen area filthy. Not at all Ada compliant. Unable to access restroom. Not a good choice for handicap individuals. Since findling this place we've returned on a number of occansions and I have to say the italian is by far my favorite. The diner area was noticable cleaner the past few times I've eaten in as well, so between that and the consistent results I've got to add that last star. Great sub shop near downtown Algonquin. They serve some great hot and cold subs, home made by a great staff. I would recommend ordering by phone if you are getting a hot sandwich, they can take 5-10 minutes to make. It's worth it even if you must wait. We got there today right at 11 when they opened. They are not allowing customers inside the business at this time. An employee came to the door and took our order. We had 2 sub sandwiches and said we would eat them on the outdoor patio. We got to the patio and all of the tables had bird poop and other dirt on them, none had been wiped down. We grabbed a wipe from the car and wiped down our own table (but had nowhere to throw it away because their garbage can was laying upside down with no bag in it). We waited for 40 minutes at the tables (we both ordered hot subs and saw cars coming and going and thought maybe it takes them a while to make the hot subs fresh right at open). We finally asked and they said the order never came through to the kitchen. We asked for a refund on the sandwiches and drove down the street to Jersey Mikes who had our sandwiches ready in 5 minutes. I was a first time customer and all they said was sorry we will refund you (didnt offer to quickly make us sandwiches, or offer anything for us to come back in the future). As for the food...Capone was tasty but I would have liked more meat...more bacon on the BLT too...Texas chili rub pork was the best! Best subs anywhere. Any time I am in the area (I live pretty far away) I will stop here for subs, or sometimes soups since they have some unique flavors that are always good. My favorite sub is the Capone...it makes my mouth water just thinking about it! I usually order to go, which is fast since I call it in ahead of time. After hearing a lot about this place from my friends, and reading reviews online, I finally decided to make the trek out to A.S.S. After eating two of their subs and fries, I will for sure be coming back here when I get a chance in the future. I got the #24, which is the Texas rub. That was probably one of the best sandwiches I've had in Illinois. I was slightly worried about how big the sandwiches were from other reviewers here, but they pack a whole lot between the bread, so you are getting a fairly tall sandwich. The other sandwich I got was the #22, it has blue cheese in it, which I am always a sucker for. It was not as good as the #24, but still better than then Jimmy Johns and Subways I have by my place. The fries also had some kind of seasoning which made them taste good. My girlfriend got the potato salad side, and I tried some of it. The potato salad was REALLY good, has a smokey flavor too it which I've never encountered before The prices are about right for what you are getting, which is a premium sandwich. If you want something cheap, subway has plenty of $5 foot longs that you can choose from. The service here was fantastic as well, the guys who work behind the counter are very nice and easy to talk too. We are new to the area. My hubby surprised me with the Buffalo sandwich. It was actually very good. I can't say that for all sub shops that have a nasty fried flavor with the chicken. My sub tasted great, except I hate blue cheese which was hubby's fault for not switching it out with ranch. But the sandwich was so good I ignored the blue cheese. We will definitely be back. I'm excited to try other subs here too! Give it a whirl. read more

i wish i lived closer so i could come here every day - omg, the sandwiches are de-LISH!! i went to visit my sister for lunch and she suggested i pick up from Algonquin Sub Shop. i got the #3 Here's the Beef; she got #18 the Monterey Chicken; both of us opted for Lays chips. I don't care for warm veggies so i skipped the lettuce & tomato, and it was fantastic! loads of meat with a tasty horse radish sauce & melted provolone (ooh, my mouth just watered thinking about it!) the bread was perfection - crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside...all of which i appreciated because i have a lot of dental work so i don't like super-chewy bread. (apologies for the over-share!) my sister didn't need to tell me how super fantastic her sandwich was - it was evident because she was barely talking. if you knew my sister, you would know how telling that is - i say this with love, but she's a blabbermouth! both of us were getting full halfway through, but the food was so good we kept going until the last morsels were gone. i would be remiss if i didn't mention how friendly, attentive, and helpful the staff was. i also appreciated that the place was spotless even during the busy lunch hour - that included the bathroom! you can bet i will be looking forward to my next trip to algonquin! read more
