My wife and I have been here twice. The first time, it was great. We ordered the Capone (Italian sub) and it hit the spot. If we'd only had that, this review would be more favorable. The second time we went we didn't fare so well. My wife got the Capone again, and I opted for a Philly Cheesesteak. Her's was fine, but mine was a major disappointment. Their version of a philly cheese steak is roast beef (the lunch meat kind) tossed on the grill and heated up and then topped with peppers and mushrooms and provolone. The toppings were fine, but heated up roast beef is not cheese steak. I'm really disappointed that a sandwich shop gets this wrong. That should either be off the menu or they should just grill up some steak. I have hope that the next time I got there I get another thing good. The place is super cool - and has a funky small-town feel to it. The staff are friendly and they've got some creative choices in sandwiches. Oh and avoid the cheese sauce they have for cheese fries. I love some A.S.S. every so often, but it is not a place for health conscious eaters. Nearly every sandwich has a portion coming off the greasy oily pan, but man do they taste great! The sandwiches are huge, so they can easily become a lunch for two. I have tried a bunch of their different sandwiches and have not been disappointed yet. Their menu has well over 25 custom subs to choose from, but you can definitely create your own. Plan on waiting a little bit for your sandwich. I would recommend phoning in your order if you are hitting the busy lunch/dinner hour. Be prepared to drop close to 10 bucks once you have a pop and fries/chip. McHenry County really needs more good sandwich shops in the area, but we don't, so until those exist I will continue to fatten up on some A.S.S.! read more

Let me give it to you straight, I would give this place a MILLION stars. I have been going to ASS since I discovered it years ago. I have tried all kinds of their subs, and loved everyone of them! (The gobbler is my favorite). I have friends that if they are within an hour of ASS, they go, They are THAT delicious and fresh! The employees are always courteous. Will you wait for your food? Yes. Is it worth the wait? ABSOLUTELY! The ONLY reason they do not get five stars is the place has a horrible exhaust system. I was a little disappointed that the italian or "al capone" was a oven grinder. Means it was hot. Not that it was bad, the bread was actually great and the red potato salad for a buck 25 was top notch. Back to the sub, i was just kinda turned off by the black olives too but mainly just that it was hot. I'll go back but get something else. I know it sounds like I am dissing the place a bit but I just wish the sub being hot was advertised that's all. And I tried the sweet cherry iced tea and it was excellent. By far the best sub shop in all of algonquin. They have a great selection of different subs & I've never had anything I didn't like. They have a lot of meat-less options which I enjoy very much. My favorite is the #20 called "wheres waldo" absolutely delicious. They make your fries right when you come to pick up so they are extra hot & fresh. Absolutely love their Jimmy the Greek sandwich but if you're indecisive on a couple of sandwiches I'd strongly suggest ordering two and sharing because they are huge and packed with yummy goodness! We moved to Algonquin in September 2010, and finally visited this place for the first time today. We'd driven by dozens of times, but never thought to stop until reading reviews here. Neither of us were disappointed, the subs were great. I'm a believer that a key to a good sub is the bread, and they get it right. That, and they aren't shy with the veggies even on a meat-laden sandwich like I had (the Capone). One drawback is the price. For what they charge, I think they could include fries with the sandwiches, or reduce the price a bit. As for the decor, it added to the appeal, though I can see why some people had complaints about cleanliness. I do enjoy dive-y type places though, so this type of thing doesn't really bother me. I'll be back, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who lives in the area, or is passing through. read more

It's hard to find a good sub place around these parts. I'm too snobby for Subway and I'm too jaded from eating Po'boys from Verti Marte in NOLA to really enjoy anything else. Algonquin Sub Shop can be considered a welcome respite from the disgusting excuses for sandwiches that are sold around here. It's a tiny little place, looks like an old house, but inside boasts a few tables and chairs for you to sit down and hunker down. They offer over 20 unique subs, and to my husband's delight, they have alfalfa sprouts. He used to work for Jimmy Johns and he said that's the part his misses the most. So they loaded him up with sprouts and he was a very happy man. Prices were reasonable, on par with the usual sandwich shop. Sandwiches were cut in half and more than enough for two meals. Try their brownies too, they're in an adorable little tin and have M&Ms on top :) read more

It took a long time for the fiance to convince me to go to this place, but now that I have had it, I am a changed woman. You feel like you are one million miles out of the suburbs, because surely something so unique and delicious could not come out of such a place. Well, you are wrong, you are in Algonquin, the land of milk and honey when it comes to sub sandwiches. These sandwiches are the perfect blend of meats, bread, cheese and toppings. We also got an order of the Mexican Nacho Soup (I think that was what it was called) and it was also out of this world. I would have given this a 5 star rating if I was reviewing on food alone. My only complaints are the location and the size of the dining area. This is a hidden jem in Algonquin. It's tight eating area and the fact that is hard to get in and out of hold me back from giving it a 5 star review. My only other concern is the prices seem to be a little high for Sub sandwiches. I had the #1 (Italian) which I really enjoyed. It was very tasty, everything I liked on it. Also had the tomato soup, which has nice big croutons and cheese. My son had the kids meal - the grilled cheese which was on thick bread and a lot of cheese which was cool. I love the fact it came with a ring pop! That won my heart. The subs are not large, but they are filling. It would be nice if we could get a free bag of chips or another side with it! I really enjoyed the bread of the subs - way different than other places I've been to. And everyone needs to stop being so crabby.....the place is a small family owned shop! Shop local! This place is by far the best sub shop around. I love a good sub. And it's hard to find a great one. Well look no further... The Al Capone is my favorite. But it's not the only good sandwich. I have NEVER had a bad one. And they put these specials on their board and it never fails to be a wrench in my decision process when I arrive. And let me tell you about the Chili. No beans and TONS of meat. Big chunky delicious meat. And seasoned to perfection. Topped with Sour Cream, Onions and Cheese. Just perfect chili. But back to the sandwiches. Awesome. Hearty, big and tasty. Do you need much more? Well then their fries too. Those are salty goodness. And if you want a desert, then check out the fresh cakes they have at the counter. I recommend the Lemon. They are out of this world. The prices are not bad. But somehow I always spend too much. Basically because I order way too much. I like the staff too. I love this place. Started stopping in here after going for bike rides down the Prairie Trail bike path. The sub sandwiches both hot and cold are always fresh and taste amazing. The bread tastes like its freshly baked, they use thick slices of cheese, and the sandwiches are piled high. I always get The Gobbler: turkey with cheese, avocado slices, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, mustard...etc. YUM. The fries are good too. They taste kind of like McDonalds fries. read more

I learned about A.S.S. about a year ago, and my wife & I order takeout about twice each month. I love the Al Capone & the warm Smokestack while my wife enjoys the Monterey Chicken, but we ask that they remove certain ingredients each time we order. I think we've had about 8 incorrect orders in the year that we've ordered from this place. Four times (including today), the wrong sandwich was made. I ordered the #4 (smokestack), and the #4 was written on the wrapper, but apparently I was given a #14, which is gross. Within the year, they made a #8 instead of a #18 and a #10 instead of a #18. Those were for my wife, and she's allergic to peppers/chili powder, so I had to make the 15 minute trek back to receive my correct order. The owner made it seem like it was my mistake since he showed me that a #10 was written and not a #18. A "Jimmy the Greek" sandwich would never be ordered in my house. Other times, my wife's Monterey Chicken sandwich would not come the way she ordered it, & we would sometimes not be given cheese sauce when it was ordered. The sandwiches, when made correctly, are very good, but I hate wondering if my order was done correctly. I should not have to unpack the bag & individually check each sandwich before leaving the gross brown hut. Maybe I won't go as often any more. The place needs a makeover. read more
