What a wonderful store. This store was started by an Algerian back in late 1800s and hence the name. When you walk in the aroma of the coffee just makes you feel like not wanting to leave. When we arrived here the there as a line and people come to buy whole beans from all around the world except for Algeria because they don't produce coffee. They have a vast selection of coffee and teas from all over and if you are into coffee/tea this would be a place you wouldn't want to miss. read more

We came here because we saw a Conde Nast YouTube video where the hosts recommended it. They also mentioned that this is the oldest coffee shop in London. Plus, look at the prices! A cappuccino for £1.2?!? Unfortunately, they are not currently (as of mid-December 2022) serving coffee drinks; they are only selling beans until they can appropriately staff up. The store was packed with folks buying beans and the staff was courteous (which is why I'm tentatively giving for stars). Once I try the cappuccino, I'll re-rate. One in the heart of London has seen it all. Literally. Algerian Coffee Stores on Old Compton St. When you walk inside you can almost sense the history of the place that has been around since 1887! I've only got into coffee in the last year or two but wow. This tiny place in Soho has a house espresso and cappuccino for £1! Pick up a hot coffee on the go while you window shop. Failing that, you could pick from a variety of beans sourced from around the world to take away is epic! Their is so much choice and when you walk inside you can almost sense the history of the place. I looked it up after I went again last week (I went and bought a batch of grounded Bolivian beans which I love to take home to my french press). With a glut of shops closing in Soho this must stay for another 100 years I hope! read more

Do not go to this shop expecting to get a coffee or have a wide range of 'to go' coffees. This is a place to go pick up your beans and brew them yourselves. They only had one brew available 'to go', and no heavy whipping cream or even half and half. They WERE very nice, and the shop had an amazing selection. Since a friend tipped me off, I have been worshipping daily here, consequently becoming rather sentimentally attached. The wall of coffee beans and tea leaves from around the world seem for my delectation exclusively. All half-dozen quirky and helpful staff are there to serve yours truly. The massive variety of crazy flavoured chocolates are mine. The Chinese tea bricks are mine. The jasmine flower balls are mine. I have exclusive rights to do ALL of my Christmas shopping in here. Summary: Adorable little spot for buying whole beans, ground, or just getting a good cup of coffee. They do not currently have soy milk, but do have skim. One of the better cheaper lattes I've had in the city by far. The Shop: This tiny place has beans from all over and a fairly knowledgeable staff to answer all questions. There is also high quality chocolate for sale. The Coffee: For those that are looking for a cup of coffee to drink, they have all the usual options and use a house blend (50% Brazillian, 50% African (I think Kenya?)) as the mix. The mix is a really nice smooth blend. You will like it, except if you are a person who likes the bitter nasty dark roast of a poorly roasted French blend or the overly aggressive, acidic - though high quality - Arabica beans used by Starbucks. The price: I can't say for sure as the caffeine had not kicked in yet and I was still getting over jet lag, but I think it was 1.25£ for my Latte. While the size was small, even at double that, it is cheaper than other places and far better tasting. Beans were reasonable, I suspect for London, though about 1.5x a NYC's bean specific joints. If I lived here, this would likely be my go to place for a cup. read more

The Algerian Coffee Shop has been my saving grace on a number of I'm-so-hung-over-I-think-I'm going-to-die but I have to go to work occasions. They are the coffee connoisseurs of Soho and the 100 year-old traditional counter is a real treat to be served from. They sell an amazing list of coffee and teas to take away at dirt cheap prices. An Espresso is only 70p, probably the cheapest (and safest) pick-me-up going in Soho. They have an incredible selection of blends, which anyone from the coffee connoisseur to the Nescafe office draw drinker can appreciate. For me, it all depends on how much energy I need. Go for the Formula Rossa espresso and 10 minutes later you'll feel like you're about to orbit into space. What hangover? They also sell lots of good quality confectionary to compliment the coffee. The wacky Zotter chocolate is a favourite, but be careful as eating this could make you feel terrible all over again. Word of warning, unless you have a strong constitution, don't try the 'Sheep's Milk with Honey Nut's' (what the hell was I thinking) instead, just play it safe with the more simple flavours such as 'Chocolate Banana', a nice gooey mess in proper foil lined wrapper with a paper cover, just like the good old days. read more

Confession time: I don't drink coffee. Once I'd got my confession out of the way, (and caused a member of staff to feign a faint in confusion at the horror of a life without strong morning caffeine boosts...) I received some really helpful advice here. I wanted to buy a grinder for my dad, along with a few types of beans. He loves coffee, and just retired, so I figured he'll have more time to relax in the morning with a decent cuppa. However, due to my complete lack of coffee knowledge, I needed help to choose everything. The staff here were really friendly, and helped me pick out several different types of beans of different strengths from all around the world to go with my gift. I really like this shop. They have plenty of interesting coffees and teas, along with coffee makers, grinders, cafetieres, tea pots etc. I know my boyfriend (and all his European work-friends) used to come here every day for their coffee fix. He said the take-away coffee here is excellent (and cheap as chips compared to chain coffee shops.) read more

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I'm giving it 5 stars anyway! I needed a £10 secret santa gift for a coffee lover, and had no idea what to get him. All I knew were the few different coffee beans he has, and thats about it. But the guys in the shop were super nice! They gave me some suggestions based on what my coworker drank, and for £10, I came away with 2 x 125g pouches of coffee, and a 125g bag of dark chocolate covered beans. I hate coffee but even they looked absolutely delicious, I went back and snagged a bag for myself--I mean for the coffee-loving bf as well :) The prices here seem very reasonable, and they even sell an assortment of teas and spices! read more

The Lilliputian location makes the overflowing stock set at reasonable prices feel as if it's coming in on all sides of you on the diminuitive sales floor. But the prompt, efficient service ensures a high customer turn-around rate to ward off claustrophobia, so don't expect to linger browsing. I suppose if you went during an off-peak time that this would be the perfect place to pick up a gift or something special for a coffee/tea lover (or yourself if you're not feeling charitable. like me) because this store has loads of appliances, sweets and doodads that line its walls and clutter its counter spaces. Algerian Coffee also offers no frills takeaway espresso drinks. I'm pretty sure it's just espresso, double espresso or dairy cappucino here. If you like your coffee without prissiness, the espresso is totally solid for 90p, a sweet pull to savour on the pavement outside from a paper cup. read more

Want to get some coffee beans that are fresh and are from exotic places? Then this place is a mecca for coffee and tea lovers. They have a huge selection of fresh coffee beans and tea leaves so that every time you come in you will want to try as many as possible. Some of my favourite blends are the Indonesian Sulawesi and Ethiopian Yirgacheffe.The prices start from £4.50 per 250g to £20 per 250g (looking at you Civet coffee).They also have confectionery such as Zotter Chocolate bars and truffles which will go great with your coffee, The staff are very knowledgeable and do their best to help you choose the coffee/tea you want based on taste and scent. One small issue is that the shop itself is small, so when there is a queue it can be quite chaotic to get in and out the shop. So if you're in Soho be sure to visit them and see their range or check out their website. read more

Algerian Coffee Stores offers up cheap and cheerful ways of enjoying the world of coffee. In my view however the compromise in quality is too much for me to recommend going there. I came here to pick up a couple of cheap coffee drippers for pour-over coffee. I haven't tried them out yet, but at a third the price of leading coffee drippers, I'm happy to tip my hat to Algerian Coffee Stores in the form of a couple of stars. Elsewhere however, Algerian Coffee Stores' lackadaisical approach prevents any more being added. Their coffee, for example, is stored in large airy plastic containers. The good part is that you have more control over how much you buy - as little as 125 grams. The bad is that. well, you shouldn't expect it to be anywhere near fresh. I picked up some Columbian beans and the result was a flat-tasting coffee and a headache. Not good. particularly when top-quality coffee can be had for only a couple of quid more. They also sell espresso-based coffee for just over a pound. So far I haven't found any coffee at this price point that I could describe as 'decent' and Algerian Coffee Stores' is no exception - probably the 'least worst' but far from decent. Worth a look for their cheap coffee-making equipment. But go to any one of London's growing number of top coffeehouses for coffee beans and decent espresso/filter coffee. read more

The shop is small but welcoming and they sell a wide range of coffee beans for very reasonable prices or you can order an espresso shot/black americano to go for £1. Seriously the best coffee in soho and probably the cheapest, I would recommend this to any coffee lover. read more

I was really disappointed by this place, as I went all the way there thinking it was an Algerian coffee store, as the name would suggest. Well, never have I been so mislead. Apparently this place used to be Algerian but was since bought by Italian people, who made it very, very Italian. There are lots of Italian products available, chocolate, nougat, sweets... Which is very nice if it's what you're looking for. Of course Italians are famous for their coffee, but after trying Algerian coffee on a holiday in Algiers, I just fell in love with it and was very hopeful to find it in this little store. Also, the coffee they serve to take away is quite average (I find it to be below Costa quality though), but the price is interesting (paid £1.20 for a small latte, half the usual coffee-franchise prices). Other products like chocolate are expensive, but that's probably because they are imported. To sum up: this coffee shop would be much better if it was renamed "Italian Coffee Stores". read more

Hey guess what! The espresso sucks! It's weird angular underextracted-tree-bark watery weird! But I am indeed a fan of this lil place. Whyever, say you? (that "?" placed intentionally to allow you to embody my straw man if only you choose) 1) Aforementioned dirty forest mudwater is £1 and caffeinated so complaints are ill-deserved, really. 2) The beautifully quirky (and rather cozily confined) interior, wood-panelled shelves stocked to the brim with coffee/chocolate/fruit/nut curiosities, evokes an early 20C apothecary of caffeinated exotica, like some remnant of colonial trade. There are little packaged fig cakes and confections and chocolates whose branding seems impossibly anachronistic. (The best-by dates all seem to check out, though!) P cool stuff. **aha, checked...apparently the store has been open since 1887** 3) It smells like the dream. Powerful coffee roast and deep dark chocolate swirled into a denser-than-air aromatic liquor almost tactilely invading your sensory organs. "Heady" in its apposite usage was invented upon the inhalation of this sort of aroma. Yeah, so it's worth soldiering through the espresso just to set foot in the shop. I nearly fainted when I walked in. The smell of coffee, while lovely was just physically overbearing and I found it hard to breath. The coffees cheap, the coffees good, the service slow and cramped, but that's what you get for a decent java. I'd pop in when it's not busy, but that's a rare site. read more

Highly recommended on any tour through Soho with anyone who even vaguely enjoys coffee. It's a tiny little guy, but there's enough to look at and smell to make a trip worth it, and for £1/espresso, it's a great place for a refuel. This is my top coffee shop in London, bar none. One of the main reasons I go there is to be served by people who seriously know coffee and are passionate about it. A middle eastern friend introduced me to arabic coffee that is mixed with a bit of ground cardamom (which he brought to me from the middle east). I went to Algerian Coffee and of course they knew how to make it. They ground the beans right there, added the cardamom in just the right proportion, and vacuum sealed it for me. And the price--for the quality that it is--was quite reasonable. read more

My husband is Dominican and this is the only place that will send Dominican coffee for under £5 a 250g bag! They have coffee from every producing region I'm aware of including Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba, Dominican Republic and Hawaii and Jamaica if you're willing to pay the price (actually, only Puerto Rico is missing!). Only thing they could improve would be to write down roasting date: occasionally some of the whole beans coffee we buy doesn't taste as fresh as usual. read more

I have been stopping here each time I am in London. First off, the 90p espresso is right up my alley since I pay am converting from dollars. It's so hard to find good coffee in this city. This place has been around since the late 1800's and is truly a gem (there's only one store). Owned now by an Italian gentleman, this is the place to go for a huge selection of really great coffee beans (they also serve take-away lattes for £1.20) and teas at super reasonable prices. They also have a great selection of coffee/tea making hardware. The staff are all young, super friendly and really into coffee. read more

A true Soho tradition. Algerian Coffee stores forms part of a triumvirate of my favourite Soho coffee stores. In terms of hot beverages they offer a small range of take away coffees for a fraction of the price one would find at a typical chain coffee shop. I love popping in for an Espresso to drink whilst meandering the streets and shops. Furthermore they have a wide range of coffee beans and teas to buy to enjoy at home. They offer two coffees of the month every month which are a steal at £6 for 500 grams!! I however frequent it for their wide range of great quality teas. As a tea obsessive its great just to have a look and buy a random selection. I would especially recommend the Japanese cherry which is refreshing with a hint of sweetness. Overall: Price: Very cheap, with a wide range of more expensive brews for connoisseurs. Favourite Item: Japanese Cherry tea Worst Aspect: Can sometimes get very busy!! Would recommend? Absolutely love this little place. I feel it always gets overlooked or bypassed far too easily due to it's location. It took me a couple of times wandering past for me to realise it's actually a treasure trove to coffee and tea lovers. The staff here are so knowledgeable about the products they're selling that it's very easy to get carried away and start asking a million and one questions before evening making a selection. There are literally wall fulls of options of both coffee and tea, so maybe try to go in with a rough idea of what exactly you're looking for first. They sell green tea, black tea, fruit tea, flowering tea..almost anything you can think of, along with a wide range of coffee beans from all around the world. Algerian Coffee Stores is a small, coffee-theme curio shop that sells candies, coffee-makers, beans, tea, as well as hot beverages. While the hot coffee does not offer a huge selection, it's nice to get a cup for £1 whilst browsing the shop or walking around Soho. I got a white Americano and a bag of Algerian Coffee Stores chocolate-covered coffee beans for a total of £3.95.
