One bite of the sausage roll and I started to have a mad craving for a beer lol. Soo juicy from the fat! A little too rich for me actually, but those who are true carnivores would very much enjoy it. Subtle seasoning taste to it (could've had a tad more). Wished the pastry crust had more of a crisp also but let's be real the main role of it is just to prevent greasy fingers lol. I ran into Ginger Pig while trying to find my wife who was binge shopping at Borough Market. The long line caught my attention. I was curious when I saw these huge croissant-like pastries stuffed with pork, lamb, or beef. I had to try one so I got in this long line but it moved fast and I got a pork sausage. Boy! That was a good decision. This pork sausage was marinated perfectly. The crust was flaky. The inside was piping hot, just the way I like it. I just love it and wanted to get one more but my stomach was so full due to the very generous portion. They also sell different types of pies (chicken, lamb, beef, etc.) that you can purchase and heat at home. Their prices are reasonable too. read more

My friend and I literally stopped someone in their tracks asking where they got their delightfully looking sausage roll. They directed us to the Ginger Roll around the corner from where we were standing. So glad that we picked one up before leaving out of Borough Market. Believe them when they say "World Famous", the roll came out piping hot and tasted almost like a breakfast sausage wrapped in a flaky, buttery dough. Wow. This is one of my favorite stalls in Borough Market! We regularly visit London and always make a stop at Borough Market to eat. My husband adores sausage rolls, and usually gets one here. Normally, I'm not that into sausage rolls, but these are outstanding and something special. I recently discovered their pork and stilton sausage roll that has really won me over! The meat is incredibly tasty and flavorful and it's had great chew. It's got crisp outside and soft inside, wrapped in flaky pastry. These sausage rolls are massive too! It will easily fill you up which is a little bit of a bummer when at the market when you want to try more items. It's best to share one. I just wish my husband and I preferred the same roll. He loves the traditional one which is also good, but the flavors of the pork and stilton are outstanding! read more

This artisanal butcher has lots of both quick lunch take-away options (pies, rolls, BBQ pulled pork with baked potatoes) as well as a traditional shop inventory, including pretty much any cut you can ask for. They also sell their Ginger Pig branded jam, mustards and other condiments that should go well with your fresh meat supply :) Make sure to try the sausage rolls (five different kind, including "Full English Sausage Roll", which is my favorite) or BBQ pulled pork set if you are a bit more hungry and are looking for a proper meal. You can have it inside a bun (new fashion in London after places like The Joint in Brixton became a "must-go") or with baked potatoes and some veggi garnish. Take it as you like it! The most gorgeous row of pie soldiers lay displayed - if you fancy a warm one, be sure to call ahead and ask them to heat one for you. It takes 40 minutes, and alas, we weren't able to wait. At a mere £4, this mighty sandwich boasts huge slabs of tender, juicy roast pig, a fluffy roll that somehow absorbs all the excess sauces without falling apart, and plenty of savoury stuffing to round out the experience. It's a wonder of nature, truly. Beyond an affordable lunchtime repast, I observed a butcher taking apart a whole leg of lamb (I think) in the background. By far the most money I've ever spent on steaks. By far the most delicious, tender, meaty, slab of beef perfection I've ever put in my mouth. I called earlier in the morning asking for an onglet cut and the woman on the phone said they had it. Showed up at about 4pm and the man behind the counter (quite beefy himself) said he had no idea what I was talking about. Small bit of disappointment, but the sausage roll certainly made me feel better (ratio of sausage to pastry is about 10992352 times that of your average sausage roll). Since it was a special birthday meal, I went for two thick sliced fillets which set me back a good £20. Eek. But those in a steakhouse would probably have cost £40+ each, so I consider it a deal. They would have been fabulous just on their own, seared on each side with a bit of butter. But again, since it was a special occasion, I made a dirty dirty filthy dirty amazingly deliciously disgustingly dirty sauce. In case you're wondering, shallots fried in salted French butter from La Fromagerie next door. Stir in a cup of farmhouse creme fraiche, also from next door. Then stir in a half cup of crumbled blue cheese, also from next door. Oh god. Then just to add to the heart-stopping fun, stir in a couple of spoonfuls of nutty, meaty browned butter you cooked the steak in. Then a splash of red wine and salt and pepper. Pour over your Ginger Pig steak and you have what the birthday boy called 'without question the best steak of his life'. It's DIRTY. It's AMAZING. DO IT. read more

One delicious, delicious type of sandwich per day. Brilliant! From concept all the way through to execution, this butcher shop gets it right. They seem to have a reputation around London as being one of the best meat sources in the land, and the yummy "roast" hand carved in front of me was enough to convince me that they've rightfully earned it. I'm salivating a little right now just remembering my sandwich. The extras - slaw, cracklings, mint jelly - enhance the sandwich (known as a bap?) without getting in the way of the meat. The bread is warm, fluffy and delicious. If you're a vegetarian or particular about what kind of meat you're eating, this is probably not the place for you, but for everyone else, this definitely gets my vote for one of the best lunches in the Marylebone area. Heard there's been quite a bump in prices over the last few months, but even so, I'd recommend a visit (or maybe two, or three, or four.) read more

Rare breed butchers - not only does that scream good quality meat but it actually delivers great quality meat! There is a selection of pies that you should be extremely careful not to drop on your toes for fear of losing a couple to the sheer size and weight of these supposed 'one-man pies'. Oh, and there is quite an array of chutneys and sauces for sale too. Never purchased these myself as they are a tad expensive (4.50 a jar I think) but they do look great and as stupid as this may sound, they do look like they are worth every penny. My office is now just a stone's throw away from this place which is actually a bad thing. Why? you may ask, well, let me tell you: They have the most delicious warm pork, stuffing, apple sauce and gravy rolls. They even give you a slice of crackling that is to die for. Ever been flirted with by an old man in a blood stained overall as he carves you two giant steaks? No, thought not! In retrospect its slightly disconcerting but at the time I thought it was quite sweet. Clearly they don't get too many young women in this shop because when I got to the front of the queue four men all offered to serve me at once. I think going to this butcher's is the closest I'll probably get to feeling like a celebrity. A meaty, meaty celebrity. The Ginger Pig is an amazing quality butchers. Award winning and frequented by the likes of Jamie Oliver, it's where you go when your looking for top quality food. The service is brilliant and the butchers will always offer tips on how to cook items. While I was there a man asked how partridges would be best cooked. Stuffed and wrapped in bacon was the response and following this, the butcher offered to do those two jobs for him as well! It is with great sadness that I write this review. If it were possible I would give the pig more stars but alas, the piggy let me down. Let me set the scene... with great elation that my colleagues told me about the wonders of they experience from the their first trip to the orange swine! A mountain of pork, warm apple sauce, stuffing and gravy all sandwiched between a soft flour dusted bap. Not forgetting the asteroid sized piece of cracklin' on the side. What red blooded person wouldn't get a little warm around the collar about that? However, meat sweats and veggies aside, I was expectant when I was invited along to participant in episode two. That day, a warm cranberry sauce (which I love), but the bread was stale :o( I was so disappointed. I ended up tipping the content of my sandwich onto a plate and eating the stuffing, pork and sauces by themselves. To end a positive, I did have a bite of David H's after my bap blunder, and his was as one would hope soft, and the meat succulent. My first review of the year and the only surprise to me is that I haven't reviewed this most awesome of butchers so far. The Ginger Pig is something of a household name these days really, between its spot at Borough market and wonderful cook books the name is spreading far and wide. Another upside to living in Marylebone is being to call this my local butcher. I mean come on...how cool is that. The shop is nestled on something of a foodie street situated next door to La Fromagerie. From the outside they have a wonderful display of some of their wares, notably the sausages and steak on the bone. Inside you find their cooked counter to the left stocked with gourmet pies and sausage rolls which are to die for. Then the full counter of meats. Its really a thing of beauty. Favorites for me include the beef short rib, the veal escalopes and the steak mince. Its all of the very highest quality and while the price reflects this its worth every penny. Maybe for some save it for a special occasion but if you can afford to I implore you to make a regular visit to this fantastic butcher. read more

The Ginger Pig needs little introduction - it's one of THE butchers in London (I cannot even begin to list off the number of restaurants which they supply) and for good reason...any self-respecting meat lover can't help but fall in love with the glass-panelled room which houses several shelves' worth of steaks. At this point, I'll also say that their cookbook has some great recipes and is well worth getting a copy of. The meat here is excellent, as you'd expect and they're well stocked with some of the less common items too - I'm particularly fond of their pork chops and steaks (had an excellent cote du boeuf the other day). I've never been as keen on their sausages and bacon - I find the sausages a bit strong-tasting and the bacon a bit on the salty side, but that may just be personal preference. I'm appreciative of the staff here - they're extremely helpful in narrowing down what you're looking for and also offer cooking tips along the way. Nice. They're always willing to go and get something from the back and trim it down if needs be. Never had a bad experience in that regard here. Of course, the GP isn't cheap - I think they're a bit more expensive than HG Walter, although GP are based a bit more centrally. At the same time, I really can't argue with the quality of their meat, so if I'm getting stuff for an occasion (Treat Day!) I'm more than happy to splash out here. They also do 3 1/2 hour butchery classes - my sister and her husband had an awesome time on the pork class (they suggested that the pig class was better than the cow class as you cover the whole animal whilst cows are simply too big). A true carnivore's delight, the Ginger Pig's Central London shop on Moxon Street in Marylebone is the epitome of what a butcher shop should be. Although it has the feel of having been there for centuries, the Ginger Pig's Marylebone location has only been in operation since 2003. In fact, the whole Ginger Pig concept simply raising the best animals, in the happiest of circumstances, on the finest stretch of Yorkshire Moors just dates to 1998, when founder Tim Wilson began vending at London's foodie haven, Borough Market. The rest is history; today, the Ginger Pig is comprised of three Yorkshire farms and five shops (four of which are in London). In many ways, the Ginger Pig's Borough Market shop is its spiritual home. Still, there's something about the Moxon Street spot that appeals to me more. Nestled in Marylebone Village, one of London's most desirable locations, the shop oozes with tradition and is about as austerely British a setting as ever you'll find. The meat on display is positively gorgeous, with some of the most scrumptious cuts of beef, pork, lamb (game and poultry too) you may ever lay your eyes on. The Ginger Pig also sells a wide selection of freshly baked pies, sausage rolls, quiches and pates. And by the way they've got more than twenty varieties of sausages to choose from as well as some of the best bacon on the planet. Rounding out this most savoury of shopping experiences, the Ginger Pig's butchers and all the staff are incredibly helpful and more than happy to offer their expert advice. On my last visit, I snatched up a couple of onglets, which at £6.41 for 14.5kg seemed like good value for money to me. They certainly tasted more expensive! This is a great butcher. They really know and love their meat. I've never had lamb taste so good. Best thing was buying 3 different types of bacon, frying them in 3 different pans and getting the full flavor of each one. I would highly recommend Gloucester Old Spot, man that pig tastes good!
