Hot chocolates with whipped cream

Every time I visit, I have to get the fries and hot chocolate. This hot cocoa is one of the best I've ever had...so creamy and delicious.

We normally just grab a quick bite (bar etc. ) on the lift, but this time we've decided to sample a bit of hot food. The fries was very generously portioned. Avoid the crowds and come in off hours as it can be quite crowded with the fire place in side.

Even a relative beginner is able to ski over to Alf's for lunch on the side of a mountain. The view of High Rustler is awesome. You can eat out on the deck if it's sunny, or wade like a penguin on a beach to find a table. Even though the place is really crowded at lunch, I've never had to wait long to find a table. Lots of people just want to be there long enough to refuel, and then get back out onto the snow. Go ahead and complain about ski resort prices. Hubby and I get a cheeseburger, load it up with lettuce, onion and tomato, then slice it in half. If we eat too much we're too sleepy to be sharp on our skis, so that's what works best for us. Over the years I have noticed that the mini ski shop in the corner has gotten bigger and bigger. More and more stuff. Great if you have an equipment malfunction and can't wait to get back to Albion base to search for a replacement. Alf's is in a really convenient location, close to lifts and on the return trip home from up the mountain. You can ski down to the Sugarloaf Lift or hike a little way up the hill to the Cecret Lift, which gets you over to Supreme. My favorite place to have lunch when I'm skiing at Alta Ski Resort.

Enjoying the snowy view

The staff here upholds the culture of Alta well and makes this one of my all-time favorite ski resort dining spots.

A perfect stop with unexpectedly great food…read more Stopped into the old lodge to wait out the end‑of‑day ski traffic and ended up having a far better experience than expected. The food was fantastic, made with care, and far above what you usually find in a mountain lodge setting. The staff were genuinely friendly, attentive, and seemed to take real pride in the place. The dining room and bar have a rustic charm that feels authentic rather than staged, which adds to the overall atmosphere. A memorable stop and absolutely worth returning to.

Unfortunately, this visit was disappointing. We ordered a bison burger with fries, pulled pork poutine, and blue corn nachos. The fries were limp and cold. The nachos arrived with regular corn chips instead of blue corn and were also cold. The pulled pork poutine was cold as well, and the burger was overly salty. What made the experience worse was the lack of service. We waited about 30 minutes without being checked on while the manager appeared to visit other tables. After flagging down a server, it took additional time before we were assisted. I understand that restaurants can have off nights, but this visit fell well below expectations -- especially given the price point and past experiences. I hope this feedback is taken constructively, as the location and atmosphere have always been a draw.

But the service was awful! We walked in around 2 or so for lunch on a Monday. It was crowded. Several staff walked past us waiting at the counter for a seat and didn't say a peep to us. Finally a woman appeared and said she'd be with us shortly. She came back and when it asked if we could sit on the patio she told me it was closed because in the morning it had been cold. It was in the 70's at 2pm?! She sat us at a table next to a support beam and it felt very tight. Chairs were not very comfortable and the table was wobbly. It was very warm in the restaurant and very loud. We sat for 15-20 minute without a single person acknowledging us. I was about to get up and leave when finally a waitress came for our order. My husband enjoyed his Back 40 burger commenting on how juicy it was but expected more flavor. I ordered a Garden salad which was really good. Carrots were huge, tomatoes were yummy and like I said earlier the greens were so crisp and so fresh. My daughter had the chicken tenders and seriously the chicken was so tender and tasted fresh unlike grocery store chicken. The views are amazing!

On the website it says the $12 will go towards your meal. When we arrived, we checked in at the hostess booth, which was just outside the door. When we walked into the dinning room we noticed there was NO ONE seated at any of the tables. We were seated clear in the back by the server's station looking into the kitchen. (I noticed they use box wine) Why she sat us clear in the back on a tiny table for four people is beyond us. (There were six of us.) Finally, we had to ask her to put two tables together so that we could all have room to eat. I ordered a mimosa with orange juice. We asked if the orange juice was freshly squeezed and she said no it wasn't. It tasted just ok, the sparkling wine they used was Not champagne for sure, and it tasted as such. We tried to order the grilled asparagus and the Japanese soufflé pancakes, both were not available. I ordered the Sunrise Baguettes for our appetizer and the Citrus Cognac Pain Perdu, and For the Groms for the main entre. The waitress didn't bring out the "Warm bun Basket" as indicated on the menu, but some Rock Hard OLD cinnamon buns with rock hard icing! I tried to put my fork into one and my fork wouldn't go in.... literally. Mind you these small buns were just sitting on the counter waiting for the flies to land on them, no covering, no wonder they were rock hard and old. The palette cleanser came out next which was the best food item of the morning. However, they used some bottom shelf balsamic vinegar which was bitter. Then came our brunch items. What shock when we saw how small the French toast was, just two small burnt end pieces of a baguette. The menu said it came with maple syrup, none was brought to our table. For my order the food was cold and old. It looked and tasted like it was from a few days ago, and they just heated it up in the oven or microwave. The hashbrowns were so greasy, and not fresh at all, the same for the scrambled eggs. Usually when I've had scrambled eggs they are light and fluffy and warm, not here! The waitress came over and said "I forgot to put in the order for the Sunrise Baguettes, I will do that now and not charge you for them." Uhhh ok. They never did show up, and the good thing is she didn't charge us for them. When the "included dessert" came out, we all had to share, we didn't get our own dessert. I took one bite and couldn't eat it. I'm not a fan of yogurt. I didn't eat it, so my partner got to eat it all. Why didn't we get our own dessert, these were too tiny to really share? Last by not least, the waitress didn't apply the money from the reservation to the bill. We didn't notice until we walked outside. When we brought it up to the waitress she said "No, that is to make a reservation." We asked to talk to a manager, and she said there wasn't one around and she would have the manager call us. What no manager on duty! I don't recommend eating here, but if you do, just go as a walk in, there is plenty of seating (we had the whole dining room to ourselves) and bypass the $12 to register that won't get taken off your bill.

We met our guide Pam in the village at Solitude where she welcomed us and outfitted us with snowshoes and headlamps for the slightly moderate hike up the mountain to the Yurt. It was so refreshing to hike through the trees and the snow to our dining adventure. Once inside the Yurt chef Andy introduced himself and welcomed us with a glass of bubbles and explained our dining experience for this evening and the menu that he had planned. He was conscious to ask about any dietary restrictions or allergies. The majority of the menu is locally sourced and includes lots of farm to table elements. We started with a plate of fresh breads and cheeses from Beehive Creamery. Next we were served a fresh mixed green salad with a vinaigrette dressing. Then the soup was a potato leek soup with bacon which was so warm and comforting. The main course was a NY Strip Steak in a special cut served atop pureed cauliflower and asparagus. The flavor was amazing. To wrap up our meal we enjoyed some salted caramel ice cream. The only thing that was lacking is the beverage menu. Only water is offered as a beverage. There is a wine and beer list available with options by the glass or the bottle and all at moderate prices which is expected at a resort. They do permit you to bring your own bottle with a modest $35 corkage fee. With this experience being so magical and modestly priced it would be nice to have a few other beverage options "included" in the cost of the dinner. This is an entire dining experience with the snowshoe hike up the mountain, a chef curated meal inside the Yurt and the opportunity for communal dinning with some new folks. The prices for this meal are really the price for the experience. We were celebrating my birthday and what an amazing way to celebrate.

Unfortunately, our request for no red onion was either not conveyed by our server or disregarded by the kitchen - not a big deal in and of itself but I was a bit surprised when our server made no attempt to rectify the error beyond simply saying "sorry."
