I had the strangest thing happen to me last year............ I had just come back from a trip from Maui last November, and when I was in my office the following day doing some paperwork........... All of a sudden it felt like someone turned off the volume in my right ear..........or like I had "water in my ear". After a few days, my hearing didn't go back to normal, so I went & visited my regular doctor. My regular doc checked my ears, & offered to send me to an Ears Nose Throat = (ENT) doc., but at that time I really thought my hearing would clear, so I declined. After this went on for about a month, I realized I maybe in trouble, and went back to my doc & took up the offer to see a ENT doc. This is where Dr. Alfred Lui comes into the picture............. Let me tell you something about Dr. Lui, he is a very knowledgeable doctor, kind, caring, & very personable. After seeing me, he sent me to an Audiologist where they gave me a hearing test............ Results: Left ear 100%, Right ear 60%!!!! Whaaaaaaaat????? You mean I lost 40% of my hearing in my right ear??? AIYAH!!!! How can be????? So Dr. Lui breaks it down for me............ he tells me - 1/3, 1/3, & 1/3 in restoring my hearing, and I will tell you later on what he did to me as far as treatment.......... So it goes...........the first 1/3, if I had seen him within 10 days of my hearing loss, "garans ball-barans" he would have restored my hearing 100%. As time passes............the longer is goes without it being treated, the second 1/3 is that I would have some of my hearing restored, but not all. And finally the last 1/3, is that you would be $hit outta luck, and be permanently deaf in that ear. Treatment - So this is what Dr. Lui prescribes to me............. He tells me I will have to do surgery, where he will stick a needle in my ear & shoot a Mega-Dose of steroids into my ear (3 separate times)! Then he tells me that I would need to take oral steroids for two weeks on top of that. I was okay about taking the oral steroids, but having a needle shoved into my ear.........I kinda cringed about that, but sometimes you hafta do what cha' gotta do, no? Of course I have to give myself the best chance of restoring my hearing, so I did "man up", & took the hit in my ear! The Aftermath of the Treatment - After I took the last shot in the ear, I had to take an MRI to see what was going on in my head. Then two weeks later I found myself in the doc's office for a follow up. I took another hearing test, then when I went in for a consultation with Dr. Lui. The results............. MRI was okay..........nothing growing in my head. And if you remembered what Dr. Lui said earlier about the - "1/3, 1/3, & 1/3"? Well, I fell in the last "1/3" meaning I was just $hit outta luck after the treatment..........upon taking the hearing test again, my right ear was still at 60%! Shucks! Well, everything happens for a reason.........sometimes no can help, just gotta roll with it. I can still hear conversation on the right side, but not as good as before. Dr. Lui said I didn't need a hearing aid, but at some point as I get older, there is a possibility that I will need a hearing aid as when you get older, sometimes your hearing will naturally get worst as you age. Unfortunately hearing aids are not covered by insurance, and Dr. Lui mention the best hearing aid out right now involved surgery where they implant something behind the ear & the cost was $10,000.00! YIKES! Hopefully technology will get better, and I am hoping the cost will drop by the time I will need a hearing aid, but until then............ If you talk to Bruddah Fran, "garans ball-barens" if you talk to me on da left side..........I gonna catch everything you say. If you talk to me on my right side.........'eh, I might catch 1/2 of what you say, depending on the ambient noise around the conversation. Aiyah! Lol! read more

Being that I never had any business or appointments in the Queen's Physicians Office Building II it was a little tricky to find on my first time, it's located on 1329 Lusitana St on the closer to the freeway, Yup I got lost! .....With that being said on to my review.... I was referred by my other ear-nose-and throat doctor (Otolaryngologist) to see Dr.Liu for sinus surgery which I could have lived without doing, but who in their right mind likes take extra Meds for the rest of their life when you actually can do something about it,not me. Hey I rather suffer one week than be miserable the rest of my life! Before going to the office I had them fax over the forms because I hate trying to fill out those things when I don't have all information with me. It was easy enough and brought the forms with me when I went in for my appointment, that saved me a headache and so much time. Dr. Liu is a pretty nice mellow Doctor, he did an endoscopic sinus exam and explained in simple language when he played back the video, yes a video! It was like exploring some spooky cave..haha! Well I knew that I had some kind of blockage problem,after watching the video and listening to the Dr.Liu it was a no brainer on what I needed to do, schedule the surgery. There is some things you have to do a week prior before the scheduled surgery, get a Pre-op physical from your Doctor, Get a CT scan of the sinus cavities and take these nasty steroid pills,which weren't really bad at all, it may vary from person to person. On the day of the surgery I checked into Queen's Medical Center 1-1/2 hrs prior to the surgery procedure. Everything went smoothly with my operation, I awoke to smiling staff faces along with a tray filled with juice,ice chips and crackers to munch on.They explained the medication which they had ready for me and soon after I was on my way. Of course they don't let you drive home, so you do need to schedule a ride. There is a print out of instructions that is given to you that explains every you need to know and do, really simple to read and follow, also you have to make a follow up appointment two days after the operation with Dr.Liu. *Big Mahalo Dr.Liu for your surgical expertise and taking care of my sinus problems! read more

Please save the time and money go to other ENT, do not come see this doctor. He does not listen to his patients and he thinks his patients are stupid. He is very rude and unprofessional. I tried to explain my concerns and symptoms to him and he thinks I am wasting his time and he told me if I don't believe him then go see other doctors. Then he just walked out of the room before I tried to explain more. I was shock how he treated a patient like this. I'm kind of picky when it comes to health care. I don't know why. Is it because I'm a health care worker? So, when my doctor referred me to a specialist, I was a bit worried and hesitant, but I knew I needed a new physician because my previous one had retired. I used to work in a clinic. That's why I'm thinking of what I would do better if I were working there. The receptionist was very professional and efficient. The nursing staff was very friendly and thorough. Dr. Liu was very courteous and pleasant. He did great job with the physical assessment and exam. He has great bedside manner! We talked about other medical issues besides the one at hand and he gave examples of his own personal experiences to encourage me towards better quality of life! Almost didn't look in my ears at first appointment. Eventually sent me to ML Ruth for testing. When I asked to have results myself & send to primary MD. She said dr Liu will only let me send to him. 3 times he claimed he never got results from her even tho she had fax receipts showing he received them. Called his office 10 times. Got phone answering messages. Finally got a person & complained. With another person, the two of them just laughed into the phone. I will never return to see Dr Alfred Liu!!!!! read more

I had been having a medical problem that my doctor and another consultant could not diagnose nor fix. My doctor recommended I see Dr. Liu who is a ear, nose and throat specialist. She strongly recommended it even though Dr. Liu is very busy and it took quite a while to get in, it was not an emergency, I should say, the problem was irritating but not life threatening. I had my appointment today and Dr. Liu identified the problem, did a small procedure right then to confirm his diagnosis and to be sure I didn't have any damage that needed repairing, told me what to do to fix it and I am hugely relieved. Tomorrow for Thanksgiving I will be thankful for Dr. Liu. His staff is really nice as well, I could not be more pleased and relieved after my visit. Thank you! read more

This is a followup to the review. I had a hearing test done just to make sure my sinus issues weren't affecting my hearing. The office was very busy at this time so I had to wait a little longer than normal for my hearing test. The lady who does the test is a visiting physician from another office who is very kind and thoughtful. Wish I got her card but she has the bedside manner that is considered the standard these days. After speaking with Dr. Liu and the tests I've had done he did conclude that I will have to continue taking the Flonase for my sinus issues and that my hearing is perfectly fine. The CT scan he had me sent for showed no obvious reasons for my sinus issues, so more likely than not I just have sinuses that are overactive. He was a bit booked so he was in a bit of a hurry with this visit, but again, he's an oldschool kind of doctor so I can sort of understand why he's the way he is. I will be going to another ENT to get a second opinion just to make absolutely sure. My sinuses go from bad to good and back again and while Dr. Liu did tell me there will be weeks where I feel kinda junky I want to be absolutely sure I know my options. read more

I was recommended to see Dr. Lieu, My visit last less then 5 minutes. Thank God I have insurance because he's very expensive. He told me I needed to have a hearing test and his staff made an appointment for that. I waited for over three weeks and finally called his office to find out the results. After several calls with no call back, they finally picked up the phone. The staff person at the other end was reading the report and said I need more testing which I did. This was done in April 2017 and to this day I still haven't ever heard back from his office. I will never recommend him or ever go back to him. He is uncaring and and cold. I have never experienced a doctor like this before. He needs to learn some compassion, manners, and return his patient's calls. A week later I went to Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for other tests and while there they gave me an excellent hearing and balance test. read more

Well after an hour of wait they finally see me, apparently I had seen Dr Liu 4 years ago for my gland on my throat that grew out of no where...and luckily it was a benign tuuumor, and not cancerous, and yes I attempted to say it with an Awnold accent! Anyways, I didn't want to have surgery to take it out, why because I don't want another surgery under my belt and another keloid scar and right on my neck! So of course it's been 4 years and now it's grown 4mm and at this point we have to decide whether or not to take it out but with the wedding coming up Dr. Liu was quite understanding about it and he took a biopsy of the mass to make sure it was still benign and we will have the results by Monday to be sure we can hold off on the surgery. It will continue to grow so it will need to be taken out sooner or later he said before it grows big enough to impede on my breathing etc.. Overall the wait was long, that is why I gave it 4 stars, but Dr Liu was pleasant and nice and sweet and great and I hope the results come back good tomorrow! read more

If you're ready to be a little grossed out then here's a story for you: About a year ago we noticed that my then three year old daughter had an ear infection. We took her to our pediatrician who gave us some drops and we thought that was the end of that. Well the smell and the infection never seemed to go away. In fact, the smell got so bad that her pre-school teacher wondered if we bathed her sometimes. Yes, it was that stink! Months went by, we visited the doctor a few more times, got more drops, we were told it was a wax build up and the smell remained. My Mother, who I have always thought was a worry wart, kept pestering me to take her to the doctor and eventually our pediatrician sent us to an ear specialist. To our surprise the ear specialist found a small bean lodged in my daughter's ear canal. No way right? Waaaaaaay. Who knew that a little bean could cause so much trouble in the world? Well for those of you who have small children, little beans are our enemies and are not to be trifled with. That little bean ended up being a small seed from a tree at my daughter's pre-school and she had stuck it in her ear. It had become lodged in her ear canal and by this time had germinated. Oh yes, that's all kind of nasty. They had to break up the seed because it was now stuck in there and of course this was not a pleasant experience at all for my daughter. She now had a hole in her ear drum and 10% hearing loss in that ear. Fast forward a year later and I had to find a new ear doctor because I had to switch from Kaiser to HMSA. I found Dr. Liu via my aunt who works at Queen's and basically knows everyone. She said he was the best. Well the best gets very booked up because it took me a good month to get an appointment. At first I wasn't sure if I liked Dr. Liu because he seemed a bit closed off but now that we've gone and seen him a few times I've grown very fond of him. He genuinely cares about my daughter's well being and he pulled out this giant wad of junk from her ear so we'll always have that fond memory to bond us together. I wish I had a picture of the wad of junk because it was really nasty looking. Perfect blackmail for when my daughter is a teenager. Yes, my little girl's ear wax is my side hobby and it's completely gross. Every time she gets sick, because she has that hole in her ear, I get to clean out those giant boogers from her ear canal. Motherhood is grand isn't it? My daughter will be having ear surgery this Summer to hopefully close up that hole in her ear and I'm crossing my fingers that she'll regain that missing 10% of hearing as she gets older. read more

Dr. Alfred Liu is a very reputable Otolaryngologist at the Queen's Medical Center. His office is located on the 4th floor of POB II. The patient waiting area is a little small, but the wait is short. Sign in at the front to secure your "place in line." Dr. Liu is very knowledgeable and thorough. And he's quick! He's kind of funny too :) Working at QMC I have the advantage of knowing which MDs are considered to be the "best," and Dr. Liu is among the "best." I have great confidence in his work and would not want to have my tonsillectomy done by any other surgeon. read more

I injured my nose and was bleeding. Dr. Liu had the day off so I called Physicians Referral Service and asked them to tell Dr. Liu to call me. He never bothered to call and I ended up in the emergency room. The next time I saw him he offered no explanation as to why he had not called. At a later time I was in terrible discomfort and asked his nurse to ask Dr. Liu what I should do. They never called me back. The last time I saw him he treated me as if I was just a big bother that he didn't want to deal with. Dr. Liu may be a good doctor but he is completely unprofessional and has a terrible bedside manner. If you can deal with a cold personality with no empathy then go to see him. read more

Dr Liu, took over my care post-surgery when the previous EENT retired. I find him very knowledgeable and up on the most recent advances. He's affable and never to busy to answer a question. Really conveyed no interest in my troublesome condition, never went the extra mile to try different treatments, was somewhat abrupt, and demonstrated no compassion. Dr. Liu seems to be a serious doctor who has a limited bedside manner. If you are expecting a Dr who will kindly talk you through every symptom you have, and ask at the end of your appointment if you have questions, you will be disappointed. He is short and to the point, and often appeared to not listen to my concerns. However, this is not a terrible thing. It just is what it is. He performed sinus surgery on me and corrected my problem with minimal side effects, so I cannot say that he is a 'bad' doctor, just one with a very brusque bedside manner. Honestly I was a little hesitant to go to Dr. Liu after reading the reviews but my doctor referred me to him to check up on something in my throat. Not going to lie, I was pretty nervous about my appointment. Yes like the other reviewers said there was a pretty long wait... It was probably about 40 min before they called me in. Dr. Liu seemed like a typical doctor... Yes he may not be the most sociable person but he's not there to make friends. He's there to do his job which he did. Do NOT see Dr. Alfred Liu. Long story short, after 2 visits and a MRI, he had told me nothing was wrong and that I should just "get another job". I knew my body and that something was not right. Went to see/get a 2nd opinion. Immediately with this new Dr, he had told me I had a sinus infection! After 2 weeks of antibiotics and steroids, I still felt pain and had the same symptoms. Got a CT scan and now need surgery. IF Dr. Alfred Liu had diagnosed me correctly the first time, I would not need this surgery! I suggest Dr. Alfred Liu should go and GET ANOTHER JOB!! read more

Very professional. Knows what he is doing. Gave a good explanation for my medical condition. Got to the point quick, recorded an examination of my vocal cords and showed them to me on a computer screen. Recommended an adaptation of my lifestyle which all made sense. Time in examination room was 15 minutes. Did not feel rushed and left completely satisfied. I was scheduled months ago, before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, for an appointment with Dr. Liu last week. When I received a reminder phone call from his receptionist, I figured that I should make the visit. Doctor Liu had cleaned my ears successfully and painlessly a few months ago. This was what I thought would be a yearly checkup. I am so pleased with Dr. Liu's conscientiousness toward his patients, as he checked my ears again, but advised me that a nose and throat checkup at this time is ill advised due to the pandemic. Here is a physician who is concerned with the well-being of his patients. He alerted me that since I am not experiencing any negative symptoms, the visit was not necessary. He advised me that if I experience any symptoms to contact my family physician, who will conduct a virtual visit on the computer and refer me to him if required. I booked an appointment with Dr. Liu after reading the two reviews on here. I haven't been able to pop my ears for the past 6 months and it had been driving me crazy. I got an appointment two weeks from the time that I called, which is pretty good for an otolaryngologist. I came on time for my appointment but had to wait an hour and ten minutes to see the doctor. I was extremely upset and was about to storm out when my name was called. However, I must say, I will wait another hour and ten minutes to see Dr. Liu. He is extremely knowledgeable and explained everything to me in terms that I could understand. He really took the time to speak with me about my concerns and gave me plenty options of how I can be treated. I will definitely be coming back to him and I highly recommend him if you need an ear, nose, and throat doctor. Just come prepared to wait! read more

Dr. Liu is a fine Doctor, very professional and caring. When l had special needs regarding my hearing and clearance to return to work he went out of his way to make sure l got exactly what was necessary. He is very well known and highly regarded by all my other specialist MDs ( l always ask their opinions about other doctors) and my primary care physician, Dr. Gerald Soon, who himself recommended Dr. Liu. Everyone knows Dr. Liu is a bit quiet, and doesn't laugh at my jokes, but who cares. He tells me everything l should know, he is very good, and takes good care of me. read more

After some trouble breathing through my nose and pressure in my sinuses, my physician referred me to Dr. Liu, who she said is the best. Seeing some reviews made me have a split opinion on him, so I hoped I would get him on a "5 star" day, as opposed to a "1 star" one.. Dr. Liu was clearly professional; while in the exam room, he explaind to me what he was doing and why. He used some sort of scope to look in my nose, and showed me the video he took in there. Although it was gross and uncomfortable, the video he took of the polyps in my nose convinced me that I needed the surgery to get them removed. Scheduling my operation was a little hasslesome, but I assume it was due to the high volume of patients at both Queen's Hospital and Dr's office. In the end, my operation went smoothly and the instructions I was given in regards to recovery and prevention were clear. Now I am polyp free and can breathe easy! read more

It seems like alfred liu is a "good" doctor around children patients, especially since their parents are there. But for a grown-up patient, alfred is very cold, in a rush, and didn't give me good advice. I went to see alfred about a month ago, because I had burning ear aches, and sore throat. I go to his office, his secretary has her window shut closed. There is also a sign on the window asking patients to not open the window. Never mind the fact that the secretaries are chatting with other employees in the office. The secretary/receptionist was also very rude to me. Fill out paperwork, and then wait another 45-minutes before being asked to go into one of the examining rooms. Alfred comes in, asks me why I am in his office, ...told him I had sore throat and ear ache. Mind you, whenever I visit a doctor's office, he never asks me if I have seen my primary care physician. Rather than getting straight to work to treat my flu, he asks if my primary care doctor gave me any medication. I'm like "look man, if I am here, I WANT treatment for my sore throat!" I then ask him about other symptoms about my face being itchy, he tells me BS information, take allegra, zyrtec, ...when I told him that I already have taken those medications. Alfred then gets fussy with me, told me to not argue with him. I would not go back to this guy's office to receive treatment. You lost one valuable patient. read more

He is the worst doctor I have ever visited. I was originally scheduled for throat surgery for sleep apnea, and they changed my time with only a week notice. I couldn't get off of work, so I had to cancel. The nurse was extremely rude! I had to reschedule another visit with him a few months later so I could be examined again. What a rip off, what was going to change in three months? At this next visit he said there was a new rule by the insurance company saying that I would have to try the CPAP machine for 6 months before surgery was considered. I asked when the rule took effect, and he said at the beginning of the year (this was in 2012). I told him that he originally had me scheduled for surgery without any problems, and then he tried to make up a bunch of lame excuses. Being I had no choice, I had to opt for the CPAP. After 2 weeks no one had contacted me about how I was going to be issued the machine. I called and left a message with the receptionist about this problem, and no return call!!!! I called an additional 2 times with the same result (no result!). I have to agree with the other reviewer in saying he is a very arrogant doctor. His staff is also uptight and unfriendly. Dr. Liu undoubtedly has knowledge, but he communicates by fiat. He did not make his rationale clear, and he dismissed my questions. His decision against surgery contradicted his earlier decision and itwo other ENT surgeons' opinions. Having chronic, often severe allergies all my life, having a consultation with Dr. Liu made me feeling depressed upon leaving the office. He has a very cold and somewhat cruel way of speaking. I feel a doctor should be very sensitive to their patients, especially those who suffer from chronic health issues that plays a major role in their lives. At the end of the day, Dr. Liu basically told me there was nothing he could do as allergies are not curable. Yes, I knew that was true before even going to the doctor. Afterall, the internet is the best source prior to consulting with a doctor, however, you'd expect the doctor to at least 1) be sensitive and empathetic to his patients and 2) offer options in treatment or referring the patient to someone else. Seeing Dr. Liu brought me to a dead end, making me feel depressed and lost. Please take my advice to NOT SEE THIS DOCTOR DESPITE THE POSITIVE REVIEWS. Doctors such as Dr. Liu do not deserve business. I'm happy he was able to help others but I'm speaking for the patients who had to put up with his unnecessary arrogant sour attitude and insensitivity to our symptoms or chronic issues. this is absolutely the worst "doctor?" experience I've ever have. he was as RUDE as it can be. (in his office) sent me for a MRI and have his nurse called a month later to tell me the result. I did try to find out the result from HIM (too busy to talk to me), after a week waiting, the receptionist felt sorry for me after the 3rd call and asked where she can reach me (late Friday), IF she can have HIM READ it? My primary care physician referred me to Dr. Liu for hoarseness and congestion in my sinuses and throat. It was a horrible experience. He barely spoke to me and inserted a nasal probe into my nose before I even realized what was happening. I was uncomfortable and very nervous the entire time because I didn't understand what was happening. I will never go back. read more

First, I am glad Dr. Alfred Liu has had occasion to do a great job, but I was not one of the lucky ones. I was referred to Dr. Liu. My ear was terribly painful and infected. In addition, I was allergic the med my internist prescribed. My ear canal was super sensitive. I winced in pain each time he inserted his tool into my ear to probe and clean it. After what seemed to be an eternity, he turned on a suction device and proceeded to suck my ear canal clean. The pain increased and I began sweating. Dr. Liu kept saying just a little more. Then he touch something in my ear that caused me to jolt up in the seat. At this point he began yelling at me saying that I may have cause him to puncture my ear drum. I left never to returned to his office. Interestingly, the doctor who successfully treated my ear inflection, worked with Dr. Liu and was not surprised at the treatment I received. The 2nd doc did not use suction to clean out the ear. read more

While Dr. Liu has a diploma and evidently went to medical school, what he lacks is basic common courtesy towards his patient ... in this case myself. He has no bedside manner whatsoever and I found him to be arrogant and contentious. He treated me as though I could not understand the English language, which I assure you is not the case. Initially he would not squeeze me in on a Friday even though I was in extreme pain from a stone blockage in my saliva gland. He did not refer me to someone else who might be able to help me. The earliest he would see me was on Monday. Over the weekend I ended up going to the ER at Queens. Although they helped somewhat, they were unable to remove the stone. I removed the stone myself on Sunday morning with a Q-tip and it was a pretty sizeable stone to say the least. When I went to his office on Monday he was not a happy camper (never is). He never asked me whether or not they prescribed antibiotics for me. When I volunteered that they had, he never asked what it was that was prescribed. This guy is another one of those typical "money doctors" who is more interested in his business (income) than his patients. I will definitely not be going back to him in the future. Office could use some paint and a cleanup as well. read more
