They take good care of my 86 year old dad who speaks very limited English. It means a lot when I am out of state. Dr Tam and his specialists spent nearly two hours conducting thorough check on my dad's right ear. The proposed solution gives him hope for the first time in over thirty years. Took my daughter there bc she has 5 bumps in her neck. (lymphnodes). He checked her, and made appt to go get CT scan at Queens. Also went to get fluid drained at Queens but it was unsuccessful. He is old but he knows what he's doing. I don't see him reusing any items he used. He doesn't talk much, but he'll explain things to you. read more

Dr. Tam is the Man for gettin' the sand out of your ear-holes. Went in for severe ear cleaning. Couldn't hear a thing in my left ear after swimming & Jacuzzi. He very carefully, with grace and precision (which is what you want when someone is sticking things in your ear) pulled-out and vacuumed a gram of debris from my ear. Now I can hear again! No issues. I am Happy. His front room is very personable. Obviously he likes the Ocean, Sports and Frank Sinatra. Brine shrimp looked happy enough. I have melted over 20,000 bottles into souvenir plates for tourists, so I appreciate people making use of recyclables. Plus it's kind of funny, if you think about it. A fish in a liquor bottle? lol. Several years ago, my then-2 1/2 year old son was referred to him. His office is VERY bland and outdated but I'm not big on aesthetics. I'm more interested in what you can do for my child. See at this age, he was desperately trying to speak and was in preschool becoming very frustrated that no one understood him and he couldn't understand some of what we said. He had a history of chronic ear infections since his first one at four months old. He is an allergy/reflux baby so he had it rough. He definitely had hearing loss from all of the yeArs of infections. We go in and everything seems to be going well. Dr sets up surgery and we come in to have procedure done. I go into the recovery room and he tells me that they took his tonsils and adenoids out but that the "mucus" he saw behind the ear will "most likely be able to resolve on it's own" Um. Im sorry what?! You passed the place you have to put the Tiny tubes into to get the adenoids out and just DID NOT place the tubes?! Ok. You're the doctor. You probably know better. We go home and literally that same week he had a double ear infection again. While still recovering from having his tonsils out. so I requested we be referred YET again having to fly and take time off of work for these things since we are on big island. We had the tubes placed and he hasn't had another infection since! Dr tam did NOT do the job Wr had agreed on him doing. He assured me of the procedures that would take place and he changed the course for the detriment of my child. He was delayed and in speech therapy until he was 8!!!! My PCP referred me to this doctor, office staff genuinely unfriendly and the one who administered the hearing test. The clinic is outdated and not clean. The doctor makes NO effort of building a friendly, clinical relationship with a patient. The practice is old school and outdated, hasn't yet invested in any costly, high-end medical equipment. Dr. Ronald Tam is SARCASTIC, UNFRIENDLY AND BLUNT. Very UNSANITARY he checked my throat using a mouth mirror out of a drawer and he puts it back in the drawer, YUCK! Whatever you do, DO NOT COME HERE!!! My father was referred here to Mr. Tam. [I say Mr. vs. Dr. because he should have his medical license revoked] by his PCP because he abruptly lost hearing in one ear. Instead of running a thorough series of tests, he just did a few simple tests, and put my dad on antibiotics. (Which doesn't seem too bad) But when my dad went the second time, and nothing got better, he just gave him the same antibiotics. Ever since he took the second regiment, his memory has gotten worse. So I got upset with the diagnosis and treatment and made an appointment at the Family Hearing Center. I went with my father and met Dr. Nakamura. He gave my dad a thorough examination, putting him through a battery of tests. Right away, he knew something was out of the ordinary and said we should go see a different ENT. After visiting the new ENT, we were told the antibiotic regiment my father was placed on by Dr. Tam can have severe side affects. Had my father been placed on the correct treatment, he might have his hearing back by now. So I HIGHLY advise anyone who has been referred here, to go else where. Any Audiology center would be better than coming to Roland Tam. read more

This doctor is not at all helpful. I had to see him for severe pain and a possible dislodged ear implant. He refused to send me for an MRI, refused to give me any pain medication or ear drops, and even though I am a RN and supplied him with a full ENT history he treated me like a real jerk. I waited almost 90 minutes to see him and it was a complete waste of time. I would not go back. read more

The clinic is filthy, unsanitary and the Dr. is rude and unprofessional. I was referred to Dr. Tam by my regular clinic Dr., when she confirmed, by touch, that there is a lump in my throat. Dr. Tan used instruments, then returned them to the same drawer, the floors and chairs were filthy, the extremely worn exam table was covered in an ordinary bath towel, that was obviously well used.. I should have gone with my intuition and fled after I had sat in the dirty waiting room for 45 minutes.. Dr Tam is a brilliant ENT, quirky and eccentric with all the neat memorabilia to look at while you wait. Whole family goes up him for ENT issues and ear cleaning (which feels so good to get all that ear wax out)! The most amazing thing he did was for my husband, who was extremely dizzy and tried everything to figure out what was causing it, He diagnosed and manually was able to rotate him around on his table and get his inner ear realigned--no more dizziness. do not go see this guy. he is a total fraud. looked at my ear without saying hardly a word. has used liquor bottles and towels on the chairs in the lobby. medical equipment is very old and outdated. i had vertigo for weeks and finally booked an appointment with an ENT doctor. i rode the bus an hour just to be told I needed a hearing test and had to come back monday when the hearing test lady comes in, if i couldn't make it then, i would have to wait a til next month after she gets back from vacation. no thanks. my hearing is fine anyway, that's not the problem with my ear. don't waste your time or money. read more

After coming back from my trip, I noticed that I couldn't really hear in my right ear. Made an appointment at Dr. Tam's since we know many friends and family that have also went to him. I went in at 4:35, and was out by 4:50. Turns out I just had way too much earwax that had built up. Yay, I get to add to the scathing reviews of this guy! God, if only I could give him less than one star, because that's seriously still to high. Where should I begin...I went in for pain and issues with my throat/voice. Okay? Okay. When I walked in, I wanted to leave immediately. The waiting room is bizarre. As already stated, there's weird liqueur bottles everywhere, trinkets, oddities coating the walls. A giant fish tank that you can barely see into because its so thick with algae. Behind the reception desk, (receptionist was very nice and helpful -- no qualms about her) there were old ass files and clutter EVERYWHERE. My anxiety was at an all time high and I had this feeling in my gut that he wouldn't be of help. So unprofessional looking. So, SO unprofessional. In the Doctor's office, Dr. Tam, sat me down, had me tell him what was going on. Then he took me into another room, FILLED WITH CLUTTER! Dust and old file boxes, and weird nets and shit hanging from the ceiling and had me lay down on a nasty old reclined chair. All he did was look in my ears and scrape out ear wax -- with tools he picked up off a tray. Nothing new. Nothing sterile. And it hurt, by the way. In this room, he doesn't look at my throat. He takes me back into the original room -- which has no patient table/seat with wax paper, its all just old chairs. So he opens this drawer and inside is one of those divider things you use to separate your forks and knives and spoons at home, and it has gauze, little mirrors, other weird tools and tongue depressors. NONE OF THEM INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED. All just thrown in there. So he pulls out a mirror, gauze and a tongue depressor -- touched them all without gloves. Here's the good part. He heats the mirror OVER AN OPEN FLAME. Are we in the 1800's? Did I just step through a time portal back to when medical practices were archaic and outdated? Alright, so, he gets his head lamp, tells me how to open my throat so he can see inside and he holds my tongue with the gauze -- still no gloves -- and takes a look see. He says everything looks fine. Maybe it could be my acid reflex, he says. You know what he prescribed? Chewing gum. I kid you not. He literally pulled a container of gum off the shelf (among the clutter) and he handed two to my ex-boyfriend who was with me, and two to me -- again, no gloves! -- and says, "here, take it. The cooling sensation of Ice Breakers will cool your throat." What are you, a commercial? Is this candid camera and this is a product placement???? My problem isn't my throat hurting, its my voice and feeling like something is swollen on the right side. HE LITERALLY WENT ON ABOUT THE GUM FOR LIKE THREE MINUTES! He told me what kind of gum, where I could buy the gum, how much came in a package and approximately how much it would cost me. This is a Doctor, ladies and gentlemen. When I asked if it could be my tonsils, he said no. When I asked why I have pain, he said "I'm not worried about you. Just gargle a lot of water. Adapt." Adapt. That's what he told me. I have to just adapt. And with that he said, "Okay, lets get you on your way." And saw us out. It was on the tip of my tongue to tell every person in that waiting room not to waste their time, but I refrained. I am soooooooooooooooooo incredibly unsatisfied and also extremely angry. Especially now, seeing all these other reviews from people having the same experiences. If you have an appointment with "Dr. Tam" cancel. Cancel now and run far, far away. The whole eccentric old-school thing is actually a turn-on for me. I dig the steel tools and sterno, and have been to plenty of fancy doctors' offices with lousy service. That said the most important qualification of a doctor is their ability to listen, and maybe at one time this guy was able to but no more. He shot some Afrin from an air compressor in my nose, wrote up a scrip for antibiotics for my sinusitis, and sent me out the door. Came back the next week with same problems, and he took like 3 minutes to check it out, dismiss all my concerns, and write another scrip for the same antibiotics that turned out to be useless. I think the receptionist should start looking for another job. This guy is going senile and should have retired already. I don't want to bash this doctor. I'm sure back in the day he was a fine physician, however he really needs to retire. I'm writing this to help other yelpers from wasting their precious time and money. He told me that I'm the ONLY one on this island with "this problem". (My parotid gland swells randomly while eating). Rather than discuss treatment, he went into a long monolog about statistics and probability. He even asked me if I went to college and took statistics!! I'm 50 years old and my half my face is swollen. It was the most bizarre doctor visit I ever had. I sat there and listened to him simply because I could not believe what he was talking about; I was curious as to how it would end. He then went to try and find an article (oh my word!) amongst the clutter regarding probability (in graph form). He could not find that. He then looks at me and says, "well, you went to college. You can "go on the computer" and look it up." I came in to get my MEDICAL issue resolved, not a lesson on statistics!!!! I ended up walking out. My visit with him was two years ago. I'm writing this now to help other yelpers. I should have wrote it sooner. I though for sure he would have retired by now read more

This doctor was a joke. I am surprised people like this could even get a job, surprisingly as an MD. I had a post pneumonia severe chronic cough. The doctor gave me bubble gum and showed me how to suppress my cough. He decided that my post-nasal drip was not causing the cough but more like a habit. He even questioned me having a pneumonia recently by asking me at what hospital I was diagnosed with it as the other doctors in the hospitals are unable to diagnose me right. He said that 99 percent of his patients were cured by suppressing their coughs and chewing bubble gum, I bet that 99 percent of his patients never went to him for a second visit. read more

DO NOT GO HERE!! The Doctor has a wonderful sense of humor but the service isnt good. I was referred to this office in February. My first appointment, we waited for 2hrs only to reschedule. A month ago, I scheduled to have my daughters tonsils removed. We were told to come 2hr early due to paper work. We get there at 0730 to only see a sign that they will return at 0830. Didnt open until 0845. We finally check in, only for the front lady to tell us we missed our appointment last Monday at Kapiolani. I am not happy with their service and would NEVER recommend for anyone to go here. read more

Worst Doctor I have ever been to in my life. I won't go into details because I'm trying not to get upset again, but all the other reviews on Yelp are 100% accurate. I don't know how this "doctor" still has a license. He is uneducated and incredibly rude. The only effort he applies is an effort to not do his job. I am pretty sure he is an alcoholic and maybe that is part of the reason, but I'm not sure. If you are looking to waste your time he is an excellent choice though. You can usually assume if a doctor no longer cares to have a clean waiting room he no longer cares about his patients. It was the dirtiest waiting room I have ever been in. Dr. Tam gets the job done. I have no complaints, although perhaps the old bedside manner needs some work. This man has a very individual character. Like brine shrimp? He has a really INTERESTING waiting room. Blues and jazz while you are on the couch getting your ears cleaned out. I like blues and jazz. Based on the posters, newspaper clippings, jars of shrimp, pictures of Elvis, record album sleeves, etc., etc. that cover every wall in the office suite, I guess you could say that Dr. Tam has a very full life that is separate from the ENT business. I had impacted wax in my left ear, and he fixed the problem excellently, like a real pro. Which makes sense, since he has over 40 years of Otorhinolaryngology experience. He is the nicest doctor, too. Totally caring and genuine. The receptionist is the best I've ever meet -- so nice! The waiting room is awesome. You will be entertained while you wait since there's so much interesting things to look at and read. Ignore the reviews (even this one) and check him out for yourself. I'm glad I did. Dr Tam is old school which is the best! Simple tests with simple solutions that work! All my other doctors couldn't help regarding just a simple sinus and throat infection. Giving me all kind of pharmaceutical samples which never worked. And his receptionist truly has the utmost Aloha Spirit that can't be found nowadays, more and more. Plus Dr. Tam doesn't use his patients as pharmaceutical experimental subjects just to get richer nor does he subject his patients to immediate unnecessary tests like an MRI or CT that invade the body with radiation and all that other junk like some patients wanted but didn't get... I took my Father here and I found Dr Tam to be a very professional Dr. We did not have an appointment but I step into his office to get his business card. It was the Dr lunch time, but my very elderly dad could not hear due to impacted wax, his receptionist was not there but the Dr found rather quickly my dads medical record and agreed to examine and saw how much my dad needed wax removed and he cleaned his ears, after that he recommended hearing test at another time. Now keep in mind he saw my dad without an appointment and felt compassion and skip his lunch to help a patient who really needed it. After that my dad could hear so much better. When he walk us out to waiting room I saw he had several patients in the waiting room. I was glad to see he is a busy Dr. I am grateful for Dr Tam I will be returning patient with my dad I recommend him. read more

I didnt have to wait more than 5 minutes, he took care of my problem, showed me a diagram and explained it all..felt a lot better as soon as he was done. I now understand how and why I ended up with a plugged ear. He had helped my son when he had a severely infected ear canal and saw him immediately the day our family physician referred him. Hi, I had read reviews of Dr. Tam's practice, so I was a bit anxious when I went for my appointment. Things were not as bad as described by others. I was able to get an appointment within one week, and the receptionist was very friendly, relaxed, and helpful. In the office, she even chatted with my husband and looked for restaurants to recommend for lunch... She also helped Dr. Tam with the Epley maneuvre, and was very gentle, patient, and helpful. The patient that was before me also said while going out that Dr Tam "is the best doctor". So that's one data point too. He's a regular patient that comes to follow a condition and get a prescription. Dr Tam listened carefully to what I was saying. He repeated and summarized what I was saying before writing it down. I could also see him thinking while I was talking. He asked relevant questions. At the end, he took the time to summarize what he had done, saying something like "What have we accomplished today... number 1, we tested... number 2, we determined... number 3, ...". Dr Tam was not able to help me much. He admitted that he knows quite a bit about BPPV (vertigo), but not other types of dizziness. I asked for other ENT or places that would help me, and he had one recommendation. It looks like BPPV is one of the most common type of dizziness, so it's the one ENT know the best. That's probably not the one I have (even though Dr Tam tried the Epley maneuvre just in case). Yes, the waiting room has quite a funky and old decor, and Dr Tam' office is cluttered. The furniture is old, but my guess is that Dr. Tam is close to retirement, and he's not going to upgrade everything. All the equipment was functioning. Yes, Dr Tam used a flame on a mirror... but I don't think that was to sterilize the tool. He had other metal tools in his drawer, and he did not put those over the flame; I think all the tools were already sterilized, and he HEATED the mirror over the flame, to make it warmer. He used that mirror in the back of my throat, pushing deep on my tongue in the very back of my throat, and I think that if the mirror had been cold, I would have gagged. Maybe a warmer tool is just for comfort? The tools were kept in a small and well organized drawer, everything seemed to be in its place. He knew where everything was. I would not recommend Dr Tam for patients with dizziness other than BPPV (because he was not really able to help me). I would recommend Dr Tam for BPPV. I don't know how good a doctor he is for allergies, voice issues, ear infections, etc. read more

Worst doctor ever! First of all the office is very old fashioned. The receptionist was very nice and bubbly, I had no problems with her. When I finally got to see Dr. Tam for my voice and throat problem. He hardly asked me any questions about why I'm here and my history. All he asked was my sexual orientation. Any who, he made me lay down on this old, dirty chair. His tools was soo out dated, and he lit a stern that you use to keep food hot, and burned each equipment that he was going to use in my mouth. I feel like he burns it because he used it on other patients before me. After the check up, HE tells me that my problem is very rare and he doesn't know what for do with my voice. He doesn't even refer me to see a speech therapist or another ENT doctor. I asked him if he knew anyone that could help me? He had the audacity to tell me go online and type in ENT doctors that can help me. Google it. I was shocked! He then said he doesn't know if doctors can perform throat procedures. I told him you don't know what a thyroidplasty is? He looked puzzled. He had the nervs to tell me to take all my money that I have in my bank and go to Vegas, gamble all my money hopefully I win big and find a doctor who can perform surgery in my throat. He is very rude, doesn't even care about my condition, and he didn't even let me tell him about my voice and how it happened etc. He told me to go back to my doctor who referred me there and tell her to refer me to somewhere else! I even asked him does he know any speech therapist or ENT Doctor that he would recommend for me to see so my doctor can send me to? He said he doesn't know anyone! WTF! LIke the other reviewer said - - This guy is a total fraud. Yes, the waiting room has empty liquor bottles and rather strange decorations. It wasn't a put off nor did I really like to see that in a doctors office. Everything seemed really out of date and odd though. That should have lead me to realize what was coming. Appearing in the door, Dr. Tam called my name. Without introducing himself or even greeting me, he pointed me into the chair in his exam room right next to the waiting room. He asked me what brought me here today. After telling him my problem he led me into his exam room. He asked me to sit on the exam chair. It was completely tattered with ripped leather from what looked like the 60's on it. To cover most of the ripped area there was an old blue shower towel that looked like it hadn't been changed in weeks either. I had to put my head on the dirtiest looking part of the whole chair. Really? After looking in both of my ears for about 10 seconds in each, he led me back into the other room. Hasn't said a word since he asked me my problem. Sits me down, and says verbatim, 'you've came here today and told me your complaints, but I have no magic wand there is is nothing I can do for you'. I very kindly asked him if he could even tell me what was going on with my ear, he didn't answer - -but proceeded to pull out several instruments. All of which were not disposable, and came from drawers that looked like he had literally just used them on other patients. HE LIGHTS A STERNO WICK ( the kind used for catering to keep food warm, the kind with the open flame?) AND STERILIZES THE INSTRUMENT OVER THE OPEN FLAME. Grabs my tongue with a piece of cloth, and shoves this instrument in my throat to look up into my sinuses. I was mortified. And he's lucky he didn't catch a left hook. After this, he slides back to put the instrument right back away, and falls out of his chair. LIterally, falls out of his chair. Mumbles something to himself, pulls himself up in the chair, and says the exact same thing to me again after excuses himself for falling down, ' I'm sorry there is nothing I can do, I don't have a magic wand, you're the only person on this island with this complaint". Gets up, and walks out of the rooom. You've been warned. This guy is a fraud. I suppose if you just needed your ears cleaned maybe? But there has GOT to be a better option out there for you. My son's pediatrician referred us here due to my sons ears (which is very bad). He's been having ear infections constantly since he was 2yrs old and he's 5yrs old now! He's tried ear drops that were prescribed and also antibiotics, ear infection still came back. After taking amoxicillin (few diff times after seeing his pediatrician) for ten days as prescribed by his pediatrician his ears feel better but a few days later his ear infection comes right back. Anywho, I got sick and tired of having my son take amoxicillin that I asked another pediatrician that works in the same office as his regular physician if he could get a referral for an ENT and here we are, we saw dr Tam. We walked in, receptionist asked if I could fill out the paperwork provided before we saw Dr Tam. Filled out the paperwork and less then five mines we were walking towards the first room. (Three stars for the quick service) I mean really, we went into the first room he asks me what his pediatrician said. I mentioned he had an ear infection in both ears so he says let's go to the other room. I kid you not, he must be old school because I'm not sure what type of chair he had my son sit in. Looked a bit ancient, anyway my son lays there as the receptionist assists dr Tam. (I'm already worried for my son because of the reviews I saw) But I figured why not give it a try! The dr walks towards the sink where a tray is set with a bunch of ear tools, I'm not sure what it's called but he grabs one off the tray and looks in it and puts it near my sons ear. Not sure if it's sanitized? But he uses the tool, no gloves just the tool in his ear while he's looking inside with some kind of I'm assuming a microscope. Does both ears, (by now my sons left ear smells, brown discharge, has sores from scratching too much. He cleans it with a "special ear drop" on a qtip, so he says and mentions four layer tissue. (Not sure what he's saying) He doesn't tell me anything about my sons ears and walks us back to the first room. He lets me know about the ear drops that he'll prescribe (I'm already rolling my eyes in my head) because once again, he's trying something he's alrdy tried. Then he gives me a a good 5min lesson on how to clean his ear with the brand tissue (Kleenex) he recommended. And then asks me if he gets water in his ears and gives me another lesson on how to shower him without getting water in his ears. By now I'm done. I'm alrdy mad that I don't know what's going on in his ears or that no surgery has been talked about. Anyway, it's been two days so far and I still haven't tried the ear drops. Will try this weekend and see how it goes. I'm assuming he was a really good dr in the day but by my experience, he's getting way too old for this. Moves very slow. read more

I found this doctor to be incompetent and weird. I came in for a throat problem, and he said to google "Globus" and to do research on it. I'm thinking to myself, "Why is he telling me this? Isn't he supposed to give me a diagnosis?" Furthermore, he recommended for me to chew a certain gum (he showed me an actual pack) whenever my throat acts up. He also had me gargle in front of him using plain water (which was weird). Lastly, he showed me some breathing techniques whenever my throat acts up. Wow! I didn't get any treatment or answer to my throat situation. My appointment was a total waste of time. read more

I saw Dr. Tam for the first time recently for bleeding in my nose that would not stop. Even before I was officially a patient he talked and advised me over the phone . I followed up with an appointment with him. He listened to everything I had to say and explained remedies to me very understandably and patiently. I'm scheduled for a follow up appointment. His office staff, Kathy, is so wonderful and courteous, and I like his nostalgic office decor!! He's been in practice many years as an ENT-- a fountain of knowledge and expertise! read more

I have been going to Dr. Tam for over 10 years. I had a constant runny nose which was seriously affecting my daily life. He diagnosed my condition as allergy rhinitis, treated it, and I have never felt better. I should have gone to him much sooner. He is a terrific physician. read more
