Vegan baklava! Need I say more?? Baklava has always been one of my all time favorite desserts. When I became vegan, I found it nearly impossible to find vegan baklava as most places make it with honey or butter so when I found out this place made vegan baklava, I was ecstatic! The restaurant is cute and cozy inside. I only got takeout, but did see dining tables so you can definitely eat inside. I believe they have some food options as well. The people working at the front were very nice. My baklava was tasty. It wasn't the best baklava I've ever had, but I can't complain when there really aren't any other vegan baklava choices around. I was so excited to try this place after reading about their baklava, and I was surprised to see a decent lunch menu as well. We arrived on a weekend afternoon and there was a small wait for a table to open up. Once you arrive, you'll order at the counter and take your number to any open table. We ordered the lamb and pepper fatayer, chicken shawarma, Aleppo pepper bread, and an assortment of baklava to go, as well as some Turkish coffee. The food came pretty quickly and the bread here is freshly made. My favorite was the fatayer, but all the dishes were flavorful and filling. One thing I didn't realize was the coffee doesn't come with milk despite the photos in some reviews, so we had to order it on the side. Turkish coffee comes in a tiny portion of mainly coffee grounds, so i probably would only get this once just for the experience. The food: DELICIOUS! Some of the best hummus and baba ghanoush I have had. And I don't even like baba ghanoush/eggplant that much! But it just tastes so fresh and I can tell they made the hummus with real chickpeas and spices just that day. We also had the stuffed dates which was another favorite of mine! The chicken kabob was also great, but had a bit less flavor than I was hoping for. And the the baklava- where the money is. Don't leave without it! I brought back one of each kind for my family and it was just incredible - soft, crunchy, not too sweet. Portions are small but prices are so reasonable! The space: The inside is beautiful. What a beautiful little spot on the East Side! The space is inviting, cozy and relaxing for a solo lunch or with a small group of friends. The Middle Eastern vibe and decor is beautiful and definitely promotes a feeling of relaxation while being there. I tried the falafel wrap with tahini sauce on the side. Based on my friend's reaction to the spicy version, I am glad I got the non-spicy wrap. The seasoning was great in the falafel! The pickles (my personal favorite) were slightly sweet and delicious with the tahini sauce. I also got an assortment of baklava to go. The pistachio version was recommended over the walnut version by the host. Hands down- one of the best pieces of baklava I have had! The quick service style of this eatery works well for the space. You order from the counter, take a number and the food is brought to your table. Lunch time fills up fast for seating! So happy to finally have quality Syrian/Lebanese food in Providence! The chef and his family are refugees from the war in Syria. He was making baklava as a teenager and owned a successful bakery before war intervened. How lucky are we that he brought his family here and became friends with folks who could make his dream of his own restaurant a reality? Every detail was planned with intentionality rarely seen outside of five-star, overpriced venues. From the moment you step in the door, you are transported to a land where the hospitality is legendary. There are cozy seats everywhere and a huge table for sharing with friends both old and new. There's even a little water fountain tucked in among the plants. The lighting and the counter are works of art. But the food...oh the food. Authentic Syrian dishes, traditional coffee and tea (with cardamom!), baklava that melts in your mouth. I LOVED this place!! I felt like it really captured the essence of the Middle East. Decorations/design: the Arabic writing on the walls, the lamps, the books about Syria and Arabic, it made for such a beautiful and meaningful aesthetic and environment. Food: the menu had soooo much good food on it. The stuffed grape leaves were the best I've ever had, there were fatayer which I didn't order but never see in the US, and tons of different types of baklava (like chocolate- who knew?!). Was walking around providence and wanted a little spot to sit and relax. Walked my Aleppo and wanted to go in. I loved the ambience from my first step in. I got a small pot of tea to share with my boyfriend and it was plenty for the two of us. The hibiscus was so good fresh, brewed well, and lived pouring it into the glass tea cup. Ok so I'm obsessed with this place! I came home just for a day and my excited mother who is ALWAYS BUSY (and a yelp elite as well) decided to take my boyfriend and I here. My boyfriend got the chicken shawarma. It was gone in two seconds so I'm gonna assume it was great. He did ask if there was a beef option. There is not so far. Now I have told y'all about the food the look blah blah but y'all What will bring me back is the tea. YES THE TEA. What's the tea? Bruhhhh we got this Ginger, Cardamom and mint tea. We got the large pot because 3 grown a$$ people. That was way too big. We could have rocked to a small pot but we didn't know. This tea has the spice and kick of ginger first then a sweetness and then the mint. Idk really what cardamom does or how it tastes but I'm sure it made it better. Aleppo is a quaint little restaurant on Ives St. close to Brown and India Point Park. It's a family owned business, which I love. They have an amazing selection of desserts (baklava)! Their falafel is good, but nothing to rave about. I prefer east side pockets falafel over Aleppo. However, I did enjoy the foule and the babaganoush. Both were rich and I could definitely taste the tahini, which I love. The foule is really filling. I had to take home more than half of it as leftovers. The friend I went with also got a smoothie and said it was great! Overall, my favorite thing about Aleppo was the restaurant itself. What a wonderful Providence gem. I haven't eaten much authentic Syrian food but can probably say this is the best I've had! We went on a Saturday night around 7pm with a group of four people. There was a bit of a line to order and a scramble for table space but ended up fitting in just fine. To eat, we shared the hummus, baba ganoush, labneh, tabbouleh and grape leaf mezze. They were all excellent but I think the baba ganoush was the winner. It was creamy and smoky and delicious. Then we had the falafel, cheese fatayer, musabaha and chicken kabob. The falafel was incredible, so perfectly crispy and spiced. The cheese fatayer was so savory and rich and yummy. The chicken on the kabob was perfectly cooked. The musabaha was unique and tasty, although maybe could have used some salt. We of course had to sample baklava for dessert. We had the classic walnut, classic pistachio, last finger pistachio and chocolate pistachio. All were delicious but the classic walnut was the favorite. read more

The perfect balance of sweet and flaky goodness. The classic pistachio squares are sweeter and more juicy but really good without overpowering sweetness. The restaurant is very homey. Feels more like a lounge and while you're sitting in there it feels like a neighborhood cafe where the locals meet in the evening. Decor is very well done and welcoming. I think the best way to go is to get a lot of small plates to share as well as a small or large tea pot. For food recommendations, I'd get the Lamb Kebob, Labneh, and Chicken Shwarma. A friend and I arrived during the 'lunch hour' and this place was packed. Every table was filled and there was a line at the counter waiting to order. We grabbed a couple of menu's off the counter and as I noticed a couple leaving their table, we high-tailed it over to get a seat and peruse the menu. As we were making our decision, the line at the counter cleared and I went up to order. The gentleman behind the counter was chatting (in Syrian I am guessing) with a customer and when it was my turn it appeared he is not completely fluent in English. I wasn't sure if my order was getting through, however, he was very pleasant and thoughtful and as it turned out, I had no need to worry. We received everything we ordered. And we ordered quite a lot. Now that I am sitting and relaxed, we have a chance to look around. The restaurant, though small, is very cute and comfortable. We were sitting toward the front of the room in large, heavy, wooden seats next to a small 'side table'. There are pillows on the seat to make them more comfortable. Plants give the room a softness and what I expect is traditional Syrian music plays in the background. All together a nice experience. Our tea arrives and is presented and poured with verve. We had chosen the mint tea and it was just lovely, although it arrives pre-sweetened, which I had not expected. The food took a little bit of time to arrive, but it was very busy, and we are not in a hurry, so we didn't give it a thought in the moment. I am hopeful that means things are cooked as you order them, which is a good thing! The olives, which contain their pips, are very tasty, with a nice bit of spice, without heat. I would totally get these again. We ordered a mezze of two items: the baba ghanoush and labneh. The portion is generous. We pretty much dipped everything into one or both of these items, although it does come with flat bread to scoop it up. The grape leaves are tangy. The lamb and peppers was not as spicy as I had expected, but love the presentation and we ate every last bit. My favorite is a small, fried dough filled with meat, but I can't remember the name! It was scrumptious, and got dipped in lots of lebneh. After eating most everything, there was plenty of mezze left, so my friend decided we needed to order some lamb kabob to finish that off. Well, I could not agree more! These kabob smell amazing and they are quite tasty. Between the bread and the kabob, we finished up the mezze and well, just when you think you can't eat another bite, it's time for baklava. Oh, yes it is. This baklava is so light. I have had my fair share of baklava and I honestly have to say this is my favorite. Layers of flaky dough, a good measure of nuts (we chose pistachio) and a sweetness that is lighter on the tongue than most others making it not a heavy cake, but a nice, light finish to the embarrassingly enormous meal we had just consumed. We ate everything with our hands because no flatware was presented with the food and we thought that was how it should be done. I did try to remember to use my left hand when eating but it was hard because I was enjoying this food so much! If you want flatware, there is a station by the cashier with everything you need and napkins. You'll want napkins. This is also the location where you drop off your dirty dishes and throw away your trash. There is one bathroom for all which is quite large and updated. I do not remember a baby changing station in there. Parking is on the street. There is a small outdoor seating area between the buildings which might be nice in warmer weather as I imagine it would be shady much of the day. It's important to patronize these little 'mom & pop' restaurants and this one has good ambiance and food. I am very happy we tried Aleppo Sweets. read more

Aleppo Sweets recently opened in winter 2019, but I already can tell it's going to be one of my go-to's for cheap, quick food. They serve a mouthwatering, affordable array of authentic Baklava and Middle East baked goods. I love the simple counter-service and casual cafe environment, perfect for a quick meal with friends or catching up over a kettle of tea (and no tipping necessary!). Sadly, you can only order the baklava flavors available on display, not everything you see on the menu, but everything was bomb. For an eye-rolling dessert, try the original crushed pistachio baklava, a rich, flaky treat with beautiful layers of buttery filo (thin dough). And for the non-sweet tooth's, Aleppo has a generous menu of savory items, including tasty homemade falafel. The best part? Everything is handmade and baked fresh by Syrian refugees residing in Providence. We got the fatayer-which is soft bread in a boat shape that holds toppings. He got the cheese, I got the Aleppo pepper. Both of us liked our own better, and were excited to go back to try more foods We got a ginger, cardamom, and mint tea. We ordered a large, but for two people could've ordered a small pot. The pot was GIANT! Which is a great deal for $7 total, but we had an appointment to make so we couldn't drink all of it. A recommendation when you order the ginger, cardamom, and mint tea: if you don't want it extremely sweet, order it unsweetened. It may be best known for having an incredible variety of the best baklava you'll ever taste in your life, but the savory dishes are just as delicious! It's not just for dessert (though it could be). It starts with delicious mezze. Fabulous baba ghanoush, rich hummus, and home-made stuffed grape leaves. Combined with lavash bread, these alone could be a nice meal. The fatayer (open, boat-shaped breads with fillings) are fun and mouth-watering. Our favorite is one with lamb and pepper, but the savory cheese is right behind. The cheese is salty, mixed with herbs, and very satisfying. The lamb is mildly spiced, enough to make it interesting without overpowering. The stuffed dates are nothing short of epic. On a recent visit, the first time we tried the stuffed dates we looked at each other and both realized we had to get another order (plus one to take home). The dates are soft, moist, and succulent, seem to be lightly soaked in honey, filled with crushed pistachio nuts, and dusted with cardamom. We've never had any dates remotely like these. The setting is casual, small, homey, and very comfortable. You feel like you've stepped into an inviting home somewhere in Syria. It's busy and there are lines even at off hours, and it's totally worth it and understandable once you take the first bite. The baklava deserve all the raves they get. They truly are the best we've ever had, anywhere (especially the whole roasted stuffed pistachio - amazing!!!). Aleppo Sweets is one of the great gems of Providence. When we got there the place was humming. There was a bit of a line at the counter (order first) but it went quickly. We got a table but shortly thereafter it got very crowded and most newcomers had to get their orders to go, as there were no tables available. The interior is really beautiful, they've created a bright, elegant and relaxing middle eastern space that is surely going to bring a lot of people in, the food and desserts will keep them coming back. Their Baklava are crispy, well baked, deliciously luring you into devouring yet another, yet another. They have little to envy to the pistachious wonders one can taste in Istanbul's Grand Bazaar (or, I imagine, in Syria). They are pricy but worth it. Unfortunately, their service is terrible and their customer service or interest on making things right non existent. They make you go through a rigorous preorder, 24 hours in advance and are supposed to let you know when they are ready. We ordered midday on a Saturday. Mid afternoon on Sunday , after hearing nothing for hours past the intended time, we called them and they just told us they did not prepare our order. They then gave us only half of it, telling us the rest would be ready the next day. To add insult to injury, the next day was not Monday , since they were closed until Wednesday. Since the poor guy insisted he could not do anything for us, he told us to speak to someone in a managerial position that was supposed to call us. That, you guessed, never happened. On Wednesday, no news. On Thursday, they let us know that they refunded half of our order. They had the gut to actually refund only half of it, after making us wait for stuff we had paid for for over 4 days. Unbelievable. Obviously, no compensation or offer would have fixed the ruined plans for Sunday, but at least would have shown good faith. Shameful business practices, very money oriented and without any respect for guests/clients. Definitely not authentically Syrian in that regard. read more
