Stopped into Highside Taphouse in Breckenridge with my girlfriend on a whim because I smelled…read moresmoking meat from the street. Naturally, I assumed brisket. I was wrong. It was Diego's calves. Diego, the operations manager, is built like a man who has never once skipped leg day and apparently runs a strict calf inspection program at the door. Nobody gets into Highside without adequate lower leg development, or inspection. I don't make the rules. Diego does. He examined the situation, measured the meat, and reluctantly allowed us entry. Once inside, things somehow became less normal. The smoked wings were absolutely unbelievable. Crispy, smoky, delicious, and worth whatever bizarre calf based TSA screening Diego is running out front. Then there's Rose. Rose is an outstanding bartender who loves Nickelback with a passion normally reserved for religion, family, and oxygen. Mention Nickelback and her eyes light up. Sing Nickelback at the bar and you have apparently entered into a legally binding friendship with her. So there I was, three beers deep, eating smoked wings, staring respectfully at Diego's magnificent calves, and singing "LOOK AT THIS PHOTOGRAPH" with Rose in a Breckenridge taproom while my girlfriend presumably reconsidered several major life decisions. Highside is a magical place. 12/10. Great beer. Great wings. Great beer again. Unreasonable calves. Questionable music but rose is cool. Came for the smoked meat. Stayed because apparently the smoked meat was Diego. Protect his at all costs.

Parking lot was literally dirt, broken asphalt, and on incline--- not safe for motorcycles, so we carefully rode on the sidewalk (NOT ON PURPOSE) just to access a safer spot. Instead of greeting us or politely explaining where we should park, the bartender served another customer, looked at us, and said, "You all look intoxicated and you rode on our sidewalk, so I'm not serving you." We weren't from the area, and a simple, respectful explanation about the parking would have gone a long way. Instead, we were immediately judged and accused without any conversation. A little kindness and professionalism would have made all the difference. We are now at The Silver Dollar Saloon!

I would classify this restaurant as sort of a roadhouse with a large bar, pool table, arcade games, and projection screen. They are set up as a fast casual restaurant ordering food and drinks at the bar and waiting for your order. I had a craving for BBQ so I aimed straight for the vein with their smokehouse chili and I was not disappointed. Hardly any vegetables, but a lot of yummy, smoked, and meaty pieces served in a slightly spicy broth. Their salad looked good and the kids liked their grilled cheeses with side car's of ice cream so everyone was happy. Staff was friendly and stated that they actually have many families with children come by so don't be scared.

Tragic. Heartbreaking. A loss for the community. After a dramatic hair toss, a fluff, and a "byeeeeee," I ventured out on my own and found myself greeted by Kev and Chris at The Carter. Now. Let's discuss the aesthetic, SHALL WE? Outside? We are serving cozy mountain hideaway. Private. Comfortable. The kind of place where you sip something delightful while watching the sun go down, or up. No judgment. Complete with a charming outdoor hearth experience that practically begs you to stare dramatically into the flames while contemplating your life choices. Inside? A tale of three seating arrangements. The high top area is giving, "I don't know you yet, but the opportunity remains available." Open, social, optimistic. Then we have the floor to vaulted ceiling fireplace situation, which honestly deserves its own zip code. Warm. Grand. Main character energy. And finally, booths for people who have made a decision. A firm decision. They do not care about mingling. They do not wish to sit at a bar. They do not seek fireplace theatrics. No notes. Service? Excellent. Conversation? Delightful. Now, Kev and Chris. Both fabulous. Kev has the energy of someone who could sell you on an idea before you even realized there was an idea being sold. Delightful. Engaging. Fun. Chris, meanwhile, initially had me clutching pearls, we are serious here. The RBF was absolutely making occasional guest appearances. Award winning RBF, honestly. The kind that makes you wonder if you're being judged for your life choices. You are not. Because two minutes later he's laughing, chatting, and proving himself equally delightful. It was a classic case of , face versus actual personality, and ( haven' we all done that ) personality won. Service? Excellent. Conversation? Delightful. If you happen to meet Kev and Chris when they're both working, ask them which city is superior. Then insist the answer is Philadelphia. Do not explain. Do not elaborate. Just commit to the bit and watch what happens. Food review time. I ordered the Goat & Berry Salad, because occasionally I choose wellness. The chicken arrived with a light crisp on the outside that said, effort but not overdone. Fresh blackberries added a tart sweet pop that played beautifully with the vinaigrette. The chèvre crumbled over peppery arugula like it had been training for this role its entire life. Every bite was balanced, bright, and frankly more emotionally available than SOME people I've dated. (This means you darling.) Delightful hosts. Delightful food. And rumor has it... There may or may not be a speakeasy hidden somewhere on the premises.
