One of Colorado's oldest establishments, sitting high and mighty since 1879 in the highest unincorporated town in the U.S. Riddled with history and famous guests like Molly Brown and Oscar Wilde, this place has stood the test of time for just about 150 years. Everyday: 12pm - 1am Kitchen: 12pm-6pm (Wed-Sat) Kitchen: 12pm-5pm (Sun) The exterior alone looks like a movie set from an old Western. Inside it's a warm and cozy saloon with about 10 bar seats, high tops, booths, and a big back room with most of the seating available for patrons. Pub grub is their specialty, with the additional flare of wild game. They serve cocktails, wine, and have a nice beer menu consisting of local Colorado brews. Bellying up at this bar felt special, and when the bartender handed me some reading material about the bar's history, everything fell into place. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much of the food, but the lamb french dip was amazing! I was tossing and turning over what to order, and the bartender, Bobbie, steered me in the right direction saying this was her favorite. The sandwich was rich, cheesy, and unctuous. The bread was great, too. Gimme 10 more for the road! She told to order their famous onion rings and these are definitely noteworthy. When's the last time you ate an onion ring and it bit through cleanly? (think O shape to C shape). I feel like they could've been seasoned more, but the texture was A+. Bobbie, the aforementioned bartender, was awesome and deserves a shoutout. She worked the whole bar throughout my timely stay and was a pleasure to talk to. I love frequenting old establishments. To me, sitting inside and appreciating the history is enough. When you have local beers, great food, and good convos, the ante only ups itself. If you only have time for one stop in Leadville, make it the Silver Dollar Saloon!

It felt super swanky and loved all the wood - felt like we were somewhere back in the 30s. The cocktail connoisseur behind the bar, Danny, makes you a custom made drink based your preferences. They can of course make standard drinks but what fun is that? In their menu, they have a list of the most popular liquors (gin, vodka, whiskey, rum, etc.) and then flavors that typically pair with those liquors. For example, I wanted some sort of whiskey sour and asked to make it with peach or ginger flavors. My husband asked for a gin drink with crème de violet and got a delicious play on an Aviation cocktail with aloe and rosemary simple syrup. Overall, a little bit of a hiccup to find it and get in, but the experience was awesome! And to stumble upon this chic and inconspicuous cocktail bar in the busy downtown was something I wasn't expecting and became a treat after a nice stroll through the town after dinner in my hotel room. From the moment I stepped inside, I knew I was at the place where my heart was calling for. There were two gents at the bar and one of them warmly greeted me and said I could sit anywhere I would like. I hence picked one of the bar seats. Except one table that was occupied by a couple I was the only one. I appeared to have picked the right time; I had the whole bar to myself (eventually though, several different groups of people streamed in; only a few of them sat at the bar close to me. The bar was spacious enough to comfortably accommodate a little over 10 people.) Jeremy, who greeted me upon arrival, was a super host. As soon as I explained that wine is my usual got-to, he said he could mix and match reds and whites to create a "flight" based on what I had told him as to my likings. His extensive explanations as to what sorts of reds and whites the bar offers/serves was (of course) all in his memory. His eloquent speech with no filler words truly impressed me; he sure is a wine connoisseur. What he picked for me were... -2024 Pepiere "Les Gras Moutons" (Muscadet) -Kobal "Bajta", Hazole Belo (aka Orange Wine) -Sandlands "Red Table Wine (Lodi Red Blend) With his wealth of knowledge, after giving him only a hint of what I liked, what Jeremy selected for me to sample/sip was a superb choice. All of them were world-class excellence with elegance and beauty. I carefully and slowly sipped each one little by little to truly immerse myself in the art of wine. Yes, wine is a piece of art for sure. I think I said it correctly at the beginning of this review. This is a cocktail bar with variety of spirits which Jeremy could easily concoct just about anything from gin-based one to vodka-based one to tequila-based ones to whiskey-based one to name several. For those who don't drink, their zero-proof section also has something interesting to browse and choose. Not to mention, rotating pilsner or IPA on tap to name a few from the beer section as well. If you need a little bite to eat, their (changing) food menu has a good number of New American-style plates. The bar originally opened in a different building back in 2015 (I believe). They moved to the current location in 2019. They also offer various different classes so you can expand/extend your knowledge. So for your next foodie vacation in Vail, make sure to include Root & Flower in your list.
